Laos has the pace of a snail, but for some, that is a very welcoming respite. DAVID LAVOIE writes.IT’S the capital of the land of the laid-back. Vientiane, Laos’ major city, is what all of our cities were so many years ago. Although a town in size, it actually feels more like a village. There are few buildings taller than five stories; two or three is more common. Three cars in the same block is a traffic jam; four is grid-lock. Most transportation is by bicycle, small motorcycle, tuk-tukor slightly larger jumbos. In fact, many people simply walk everywhere. Many of the buildings are French colonial in style and have ornate balconies. Here and there are more traditional Laotian buildings. It all has a tremendous elegance. The sidewalks are clean and largely empty. Everywhere tiny shops sell the beautiful fabrics produced by women in rural villages using traditional patterns. The cloths are hand-woven on ancient wooden looms. The people are very friendly and soft-spoken. It is very of

India has been portrayed as the land of snake charmers and fakirs who can perform magic tricks, creating ash from empty air. However, if you take time to explore the country you will discover many more aspects that have remained hidden from the world's eyes for so long. India is a country that revels in diversity. Each state has its unique story to tell and one such story unfolds in the desert land of Rajasthan, the land of kings. It is one of India's largest state's and has many such towns and cities that offer a wide variety of sights and sounds to the traveler. A riot of colors covers each place in Rajasthan, giving each city its distinct identity. Jaipur is known as the pink city due to the sandstones with a pinkish tinge that have been used to build the forts and palaces of this ancient town. Another interesting itinerary on your Rajasthan trip should be a compulsory visit to Pushkar. Pushkar travel is bound to open up new horizons for you and help you see the spiritual side of In

From now on I am travelling on Super Bowl Sunday every year. I had a perfectly smooth trip. Everything was great. I'm in SC now, heading to bed. Bart agreed to pick up Salinda as an act of grace. She has responded appropriately. It has improved their relationship I'm sure, and all is well at home. And it is mighty quiet here. Ahhhhhhh.

In this age of global warming, many readers have told us they wanted to travel, where possible, without flying. This is a series that will help them do just that.

Report from Boat ShowFor over fifty years the Tulsa Downtown Lions Club has sponsored the Tulsa Boat, Sport, and Travel Show at the formerly known IPE Building, but now known as the Quick Trip Center at the Tulsa County Fairgrounds in Tulsa, OK. This boat show has long been one of the top ten in the nation and is known as the starting signal of the new "lake season". All the boat dealers have very nice displays of the new boat lines. It is a great place to get a feel of the "air" for the soon to be here spring. Yes, it is still cold, but what a great time to dream of spring and summer and the lake. Of course the lake I like to see people dream of is Grand Lake located just a little over an hour's drive from Tulsa. Grand Lake and boating go hand in hand. It is such a pretty lake with varying scenry and great water to fish, swim, wake-board, or ski on. Home ownership on lakes is very popular for retirement or second homes and such is Grand Lake and Grove, OK, the larg
The world is getting smaller and if you own a travel and tourism website, you can facilitate a smooth ride from point A to B. But the main problem that stands in the way of many tourist websites is more often than not, a poorly presented website. Small tweaks and touches that matter can be added though with the help of just a few tricks from a resourceful online marketing professional and an inventive web design expert. Its your business and your website, so the first step to a good travel website is to get your hired experts to de-clutter your website. Categorize the site and keep the home page free of an excess of special offers, hotspots, hotel and transport pictures, etc. A lot of travel and tourism websites have home pages that are just short of giving a visitor a headache thanks to tickers that announce airline flights and slide-shows of old landmark pictures. Ascertain which section of the travel market you are targeting and accordingly convey to the website des

By Chris Baldwin MOSCOW (Reuters) - A top Kremlin figure on Wednesday threatened to sack space agency officials unless they get on with developing a Russian satellite navigation system to rival the U.S.-controlled global positioning system GPS. First Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov told a collegium at the Russian space agency Roskosmos they should focus on the long-delayed system rather than space exploration. "I call attention to the unacceptable failure to achieve goals ... the personal responsibility of the directors ... and I do not exclude carrying out organisational and staff changes," Ivanov said. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly mentioned the hi-tech application, which is being coordinated by the space agency, as a priority for his administration. GLONASS, short for Global Navigation Satellite System, began as a military project in the 1970s but stalled in the early 90s. In December amid much fanfare, Russia launched the final components to provid
One of my favorite places to visit is Griffith Park. I love so many of it's attractions and it's natural beauty. I grew up only a couple of miles away from the park and have wonderful memories (I learned to ride a bike at the park) of visiting the observatory, hiking and fun picnics. I would have to say that many fun times were spent at the Travel Town Museum. If you love trains or your little ones love trains this is a must stop. It's an outdoor museum with many locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars and cabooses on display. There is of course a train ride that circles around the museum and is a must if you are going to visit. Train Rides are $2.50 for adults and children. There are also Public Play Days on the first Sunday of the month from 1 to 4pm where kids can play with the museum's 400 wooden piece Thomas set. There are also docent guided tours every 2nd and 3rd Saturday of the month. Tours start at 11am. Admission and parking is free!! If you're looking for something fun

Things to remember It's in your best interests not to drink the tap water, especially after flooding! Avoid cyclo ride after dark. Dress modestly and appropriately when visiting local dwellings and religious sites, etc. Leave your valuables behind before a night out on the town, or going to the beach. When crossing the road, especially in Ho Chi Minh city, always keep looking to the left and right and walk slowly! Do not offer money directly to minority people - instead donate to a local charity or offer a small gift, such as pens. Try at least once the delicious, local street food. Always ask permission first before taking photographs, especially in minority areas.* * * * * Things do not to miss Sleeping out on deck on a boat in Halong Bay Ordering custom-made clothes from the local tailor shop Taking a slow cyclo ride through the French Quarter of old Saigon Eating pho ga (chicken noodle soup) at a street side noodle stalls. If you ever plan to visit Britain, don’t forget to refer to the online travel guide by virtualtourist.com, which warns about the nation’s pubs, kebab vans – and chatting-up our women. The guide also alerts visitors to automated taps and loos in public conveniences, beer, queuing, roads and football fans. The 2,000 tips at virtualtourist.com also caution against roundabouts, Morris dancing, “snakebite” drinks and chavs. “Be wary of food vans at tourist spots. Their hygiene isn’t always good,” The Sun quoted a tourist, as saying. Another said: “Don’t stare at anyone in a pub. They may take it badly and beat you up.” One adds: “In small towns, don’t get drunk and make advances on local women. I tried – it’s dangerous.” Jeff from California warns: “Check out roundabouts before you drive through one – trust me they can be tricky.”

According to USA Today, U.S. airlines lost an average of 10,000 bags per day in 2005. That's fabulous. I have flights to both Minneapolis and San Diego this month. Two wonderful chances to become a lost luggage statistic. As a fan of designer denim and overpriced shoes, I hate the idea of checking luggage. My fear of lost luggage-- and losing all of the clothes packed inside-- has developed in me an amazing ability to efficiently pack carry-on sized luggage for trips up to a full week in length. That saved my for a good long time. Then, the strict limitations on the amount of liquid one can pack in a carry-on kicked in and I was forced into checking my luggage once again.
