It's either an act of bravado, or - ahem - simply giving Eurovision the bird, but Ireland looks intent on sending a singing turkey to this year's Eurovision. An actual puppet on a string.A delightful piece of whimsy for a knockabout competition, you might think. Not, apparently, if you're a songwriter in Ireland. To them, it's as welcome as a turkey twizzler in a health farm:Frank McNamara, who wrote two Eurovision winners, asked whether RTE, the state broadcaster that selected the six acts, was “giving two fingers” to Irish songwriters. “I think it is absolutely disgraceful,” he said.Shay Healy, who wrote Johnny Logan’s Eurovision hit What’s Another Year?, wondered “how any bunch of grown-ups could come up with this as a solution”. And Phil Coulter thought that Eurovision was going “down the tubes”. Some observers might wonder if there's very much distance between Johnny Logan and a turkey puppet. The anger of the songwriter might be less about Eurovision and more

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish authorities culled nearly 600 poultry in villages near the Black Sea coast on Wednesday after an outbreak of bird flu was reported there. The Agriculture Ministry said checkpoints had been set up at the entrance to the villages and six culling centres had been built in Zonguldak province, where authorities identified the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain in chickens on Tuesday. "Culling work has been completed. A total of 570 chickens, 14 ducks and two geese have been culled and buried," the ministry said in a statement. There are no reports of new cases, it said, adding that it believed the virus had spread to the poultry from wild ducks. Turkey lies on the migratory route for wild birds flying south from Scandinavia and Siberia to north Africa for winter. Four people died from bird flu in eastern Turkey in 2006 after they came into contact with sick birds. Although bird flu remains an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate i
By Paul de Bendern ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's government pressed ahead on Wednesday with plans to lift a ban on the Islamic headscarf in universities, setting the stage for a potential clash with the powerful secular elite. The headscarf is a highly sensitive issue, pitting the Islamist-rooted AK Party government against secular figures such as judges and army generals who see the garment as a threat to the separation of state and religion. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, a pious Muslim, said his AK Party would propose easing a strict ban on the headscarf in universities without waiting for parliament to approve a new constitution. "We don't have any intention or aim to wait. It has to happen as soon as possible," he told reporters. The centre-right, pro-business AK Party hopes its proposed amendments to the constitution will be acceptable to the opposition nationalist MHP, which already backs a limited easing of the ban. MHP support would allow the AK Party to pa

Yesterday I blogged about muslims attempting to take down pictures of their invisible friend on wikipedia via petition. Today we got a letter from the head of the number one turkish atheist site which has been stripped from the eyes of Turks twice. Once under the original domain and then again under another domain. Unfortunately, the owner is unable to fight this in court because to do so he would have to identify himself which if you're familiar will end up resulting in his head being chopped off by the peaceful and loving muslims who work for Allah. If you speak Turkish and you are an atheist please support this site...

SULAIMANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Turkish warplanes bombed an area inside Iraq near the border with Turkey on Tuesday, an Iraqi Kurdish border guard official said. The official, Colonel Hussein Tamar, director of the border guard command in the Iraqi Kurdish province of Dahuk, said no one was hurt in the strikes, which targeted an area that was evacuated earlier this month. Turkey has been repeatedly bombing areas in northern Iraq in pursuit of PKK separatist rebels over the past few weeks, apparently with the support of the United States, whose forces have acknowledged clearing air space for the flights. Turkish ground troops have also made occasional cross-border raids, although a large-scale ground assault is seen as unlikely, especially in winter. Turkey says it has the right to pursue PKK guerrillas in cross-border raids after the Iraq-based rebels carried out a number of deadly attacks in Turkey. U.S. and Iraqi leaders say they support Turkey's right to strike back at the separ
Victoria Beckham was left shocked after receiving a turkey stuffed with skincare products as a Christmas present from celebrity skin medic Dr Neetu Nirdosh. The bizarre festive gift, which was intended to help Posh Spice combat the effects of her group’s world tour and air travel, didn’t seem to go down too well with her. A source revealed that the 33-year-old vegetarian was far from impressed with the Christmas present. “The thought of her using these products that have been stuffed inside a turkey is just nuts. She refuses to eat meat or wear fur so Victoria is far from impressed with it,” the Daily Express quoted her, as saying. Earlier this year, the singer was unhappy when she learned that a pair of lambs she was looking after for chef chum Gordon Ramsay were to be slaughtered. A spokeswoman explained at the time: “She was more than happy to let the sheep roam around her grounds but she will be distraught to l

We've been trying to eat less pork because of Lon's cholesterol. He doesn't like tofu that much and I don't want to eat chicken every day. As you may have read before, I'm not a fan of breast meat so I bought turkey legs. I decided to de-bone them (leave skin on) because I wanted to use the grill. This marinade is enough for 2-3 turkey legs. Grill time will vary because turkey legs vary greatly in size.Marinade:1 cup ketchup1/2 cup soy sauce2 tablespoons mirin1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce1 tablespoon granulated garlic1 tablespoon granulated onion powder1/2 teaspoon ginger powderJust mix ingredients together and marinate meat for at least 4 hours. The turkey tasted a bit like BBQ Pork and we both loved it!! I'm sure the marinade would be great for chicken or pork as well.

Olympus E-3 Hands-On Review : Not even 3 weeks after returning from my trip to Kenya, where I attended the EOS Safari on the invitation of Canon, I found the next invitation on my digital doormat. This time it concerned an invitation from Olympus to Istanbul, Turkey, for the introduction of the long expected successor of the E1 to the press. Journalists from all over the world were flown into Turkey in groups to join the ten day event. Besides a number of Dutch colleagues, the Belgian and English press were also present during my stay. Upon our arrival at Istanbul's Atatürk airport a bus took us to the famous Topkapi palace. A guide gave us a tour through this beautiful cultural heritage and we were able to visit a few sections.Dennis Hissinkmore : letsgodigital

One way to lessen the transition from one culture to another is to continue to celebrate some of the important dates that were unique to your previous culture. One of the most American of holidays is Thanksgiving, and this will be our third year celebrating it here in Kiev. There are often challenges to celebrating a holiday from a prior culture in a different country. Since most celebrations involve food, you may find yourself looking for foods that are not common, or are out of season. The quintessential Thanksgiving food is turkey, but finding turkey in Kiev in November can be a challenge. We know now that the only real way to get one is to go to a supermarket a week in advance and have them obtain one for you. And expect to pay for the privilege.Another challenge, should you accept it, is a traditional Thanksgiving pie, whether pumpkin or apple or something else. I haven't yet found pies like Mom used to make in the stores, so we've tried the make it yourself way. My wife, be
