KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysian tycoon on Tuesday dismissed claims that he had discussed judges' appointments with former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, but joked that he wished he could have that kind of power. Vincent Tan, chairman of Malaysian hotels, leisure and property firm Berjaya Corp, with 3 billion ringgit ($928 million) in annual revenue, told a public inquiry that the allegations, aired in a controversial videoclip, were baseless. "You mean the prime minister calls me to talk about judges? It's a real joke," Tan told a Malaysian court when asked about the truth of the comments by a well-known lawyer, allegedly made in a conversation with a senior judge in December 2001. The lawyer, unwittingly filmed speaking on his mobile phone, boasts of his ability to influence appointments and of his connections with the then premier, Mahathir.
