O Campeonato da Europa só terá lugar em 2008, mas as selecções do «velho» continente estão, já a algum tempo, a disputarem o acesso à prova, organizada conjuntamente por dois países: Suiça e Áustria. É a segunda vez que o Campeonato da Europa é organizado por dois países.
A fase de qualificação começou em Setembro de 2006 e termina em Novembro de 2007. Os dois primeiros classificados de cada um dos sete grupos qualifica-se. O Grupo de Portugal, o A, é o único composto por oito selecções.
O objectivo de Portugal é fazer um Euro 2008 ainda melhor que o Campeonato de 2004, do qual saiu com um segundo lugar.
