  • Speaking the Universal Language of Emotion
by Joshua Thompson. Buddha said, “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.” Our thoughts honestly control what we do. There is plenty of material written on this. So I won’t get into it too much. We are a product of what we think…but also [...]

  • Google Universal Search - A Progress Update
Yesterday Danny Sullivan published an article over at Search Engine Land discussing Google Universal Search. In his article he discusses how Universal Search has evolved in the short time since it debuted last year.Today Universal Search results are displayed based mostly on relevance and blended in with the natural search results. While it is very common for news, images, and other vertical search results to be displayed at the top of the page, more and more cases are being found with these being injected, or blended, right into the midst of things (for example in the #4 or #5 position, based entirely on relevance).Universal Search does not only display results based on Google news, but also looks at videos, images, maps, and other search relevant results from Google's various vertical search listings.Danny goes into significant detail in outlining various examples including screen shots, showing how Local, Image, News, and Video results are blended into the normal results pages. • Universal rub hands with delight
ContactMusic haven't sourced the quote they attribute to Hassan Choudhury, vice president of Universal Music International, and you really have to hope it's not genuine. They claim he said:"There's no getting away from the fact all the coverage has kept Amy Winehouse's profile at the highest level. "Everyone (at Universal) is extremely happy with the amount of records we've sold and a lot of it has been down to some amazing marketing opportunities in the market when the artist wasn't available."How fortunate that "the coverage" of a woman getting more and more addicted to crack has helped the profile and sell records, eh?Like we say: let's hope the quote has got a little lost in translation. If it's genuine, then he might want to consider his position. If it's not, ContactMusic have some explaining to do.

So do you go out and throw down on a fully-featured RF remote to control your home automation gizmos, or do you get one of those snazzy wall-mounted keypads installed to handle the same duties? • Universal Studios Hollywood
Lucky for us we were spared by the rain gods on January 26th when we visited Univeral Studios Hollywood. Though it was a Saturday, the crowds were light, probably because most people expected rain. Also, late January is a great time to visit most amusement parks because it is off-season.While my husband and I have visited Universal Studios many times in the past, this was the first time for us to venture there with our little ones. When we arrived, one of the first things we found is that Univeral offers an all-you-can-eat pass for $19.99. For children under 48 inches, it is only $9.99. The All You Can Eat Pass is good for 1 entrée, 1 side and 1 dessert every time you go through a food service line at Mel's Diner, Louie's Pizza and Pasta, or the Jurassic Café. You can go through the line as many times as you want. It does NOT include beverages. No sharing, take-out or refunds. You can save even more by buying the pass online. I would definitely recommend this deal if you will

  • Can our government be trusted to run a universal healthcare system?
I've been involved in several discussions about the Analysis of the Candidates’ Healthcare Proposals web site I published last week (and have updated since then). Much of the debate centers on mandates and trust of our government to run a nation-wide universal healthcare system. One reader had this to say:Within the current system, the mandated "Medicare drug plan" appears to be heavily weighted to benefit the pharmaceutical manufacturing & distribution industry. Please give me your thoughts or analysis on the recognition of the candidates in what certainly appears to be an industry with very powerful influence in government. My personal assessment/feeling leans toward a more competitive market with as few government controls as possible. However I do feel government has a needed and viable role in the healthcare of our citizens.I responded as follows:I haven't analyzed who benefits most from the Medicare drug plan, but based on my understanding of our current healthcare system, I

Hello Friends!  Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting my blog, Stock Picks Bob's Advice!  As always, please remember that I am an amateur investor, so please remember to consult with your professional investment advisers prior to making any investment decisions based on information on this website. In order to demonstrate what a total amateur investor I really am, and I am NOT kidding, I probably should explain to you the series of really amateur mistakes I made today with my Universal Electronics Stock (UEIC).  I am really getting ready to stick to my rules and stop all the short-term trades.  While the rest of the market moved higher today, my own account dipped.Earlier today, I saw that my UEIC stock was taking a nosedive for no particular reason.   Rule #1.  Don't try to figure out the reason.  Just respond to market action.I didn't.I tried. And I lost.I figured since the drop was outrageous and the stock was gorgeous, I was s

  • Universal CEO: The new Shmoo
Rewriting history is usually a matter for the victors, so it's a little surprising to see Universal CEO Doug Morris being given a chance to try to address the perception that the record industry didn't see digital coming. He tells Wired that the music industry knew what was about to happen, it just didn't know what to do:Morris insists there wasn't a thing he or anyone else could have done differently. "There's no one in the record company that's a technologist," Morris explains. "That's a misconception writers make all the time, that the record industry missed this. They didn't. They just didn't know what to do. It's like if you were suddenly asked to operate on your dog to remove his kidney. What would you do?"Personally, I would hire a vet. But to Morris, even that wasn't an option. "We didn't know who to hire," he says, becoming more agitated. "I wouldn't be able to recognize a good technology person — anyone with a good bullshit story would have gotten past me."The mental image -
  • Patient-Centered Life-Cycle (PCLC) Value Chain--Process Reform: Universal Health Coverage and Personal Responsibility
Having affordable insurance and comprehensive coverage is a cornerstone of the PCLC Value Chain. Nevertheless, one of the issues generating the greatest debate concerns universal health coverage (i.e., healthcare for all), along with the related issue of "personal responsibility." The argument tends to center on whether the young and the healthy should help pay for care that older and ill persons need, how much they should pay, and the degree of responsibility people have for staying healthy and paying for their care when they get sick. In an earlier series of posts, I made the case that all Americans are worthy of health insurance, and that personal responsibility is a complex issue we must address, but for which there are no quick fixes.Well, I recently corresponded with two individuals who have ideas about this topic, which I present below.Person 1 wrote: Just an idea, but since some here are so determined that Health Care for Everyone should be equal (but not equally paid for) and

Although Universal have signed the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards on a strict record deal.Like all record deals, ever, it's being touted as a million-pound deal. • Canadian MP Seeks Cancer Treatment In U.S. (Universal Healthcare Failure)
As Hillary is proposing a universal healthcare program (i.e. socialist gov't), we are given this recent news about a member of the Canadian parliament seeking cancer treatment in the United States. Apparently; this isn't the first time Canadians with money have come across the border to seek treatment. I urge you to go to the article and read the comments. You find Canadians commenting on how "broken" the universal healthcare system really is. It is being twisted to appear like a personal attack against the MP, it's not, it's pointing out the failures of universal healthcare. Liberal MP Belinda Stronach, who is battling breast cancer, travelled to California last June for an operation that was recommended as part of her treatment, says a report. Stronach's spokesman, Greg MacEachern, told the Toronto Star that the MP for Newmarket-Aurora had a "later-stage" operation in the U.S. after a Toronto doctor referred her. "Belinda had one of her later-stage operations in California, af

This post is a continuation of my last post, in which I debate with someone the issues of universal healthcare, worthiness, free markets, taxation, smart economic growth, problems with healthcare insurance today, and more. As always, I welcome your feedback. In this round of the debate, he began by referencing the following statement I made in a previous post: “The best kind of Capitalism fosters 'smart economic growth' through the right combination of small company entrepreneurial (technological) innovation and big- firm market capabilities, without restrictions on free trade, brings about a higher standard of living for just about everyone in that country.â€He then said: This is essentially what I have been espousing, with the state keeping the corporations from manipulating a free market, and leaving the rest alone. Incentives for productive entrepreneurship being profit, and the disincentive for unproductive entrepreneurship being hunger, no further incentive is required.Next, he

  • Universal go crazy
How charming. An eighteen month old boy so liked Prince's Superbowl performance that she started tootling about during Let's Go Crazy. The proud mother grabbed a video camera, and filmed a thirty-second snatch of him dancing, and - as proud mothers tend to - posted it to YouTube. This is where the story gets less charming. Universal somehow came across the clip and - presumably worried that nobody would want to buy a Prince album if they could download a thirty second bit of one of his songs, muffled in the background of a video of a dancing child - made YouTube take it down. This, of course, is a nonsense - clearly, the Prince track was merely an incidental copying and not part of an attempt to duplicate his work. The clip is now back on YouTube, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation has launched a lawsuit on the mother's behalf:"Copyright abuse can shut down online artists, political analysts, or -- as in this case -- ordinary families who simply want to share snippets of their day

Google is trying to merge its specialized search pages—like Google News into one giant search function. If you're looking for news stories or images, you'll do better going to Google News and Google Images, respectively but now you can just visit Google.Personally,i would visit Google News to find a story, I can't see why I'd ever go over to the universal page to hunt up a news story. But I suspect Google isn't aiming at a relatively sophisticated searcher such as me. Rather, it's looking to appeal to more casual users.
  • Calls for BBC Iplayer to be universal
The BBC web 2.0 Iplayer only runs on Windows XP, and calls have come from the open source community and just about everyone else to make it so that it works on every operating system from Linux to Vista to Apple. The BBC is coming back and saying that an Apple version and a Vista version is in the works. Linux might just have to wait a bit because the BBC is making their decisions on builds based on the market share of each one of the operating systems. But the BBC has said it does intend to allow access to its content from computers with other operating systems. Speaking at the launch of the service, director of Future Media and Technology at the BBC Ashley Highfield said: “I am fundamentally committed to universality, to getting the BBC iPlayer to everyone in the UK who pays their licence fee.” Source: BBC In the longer run though this is a good thing, with an Apple version of the Iplayer coming in the fall, with vista and mobile devices coming in next. • Thurston: Starbucks 'no worse' than Universal
Thurston Moore reckons he's surprised at the heat he's getting for placing the new Sonic Youth album through Starbucks:"I never thought of it as being more radical than recording for Universal Music. They're both corporations that have ties to things that people find sort of problematic. The compilation came out of the idea that I wanted Rather Ripped to be in Starbucks stores because that's where people were seeing CDs. They aren't going into record stores anymore."Certainly, as music producers, Starbucks' record seems more positive than any of the big RIAA companies.

But to make it worse, he was actually slagging off the man with the thankless task of translating Crowded House lyrics into sign language.Oops.To be fair, when he realised what he'd done, he did apologise. Apparently he was short tempered after having to throw out a load of bloody labradors some idiot had allowed in backstage.
  • Google's Universal Search to Replace Zillow and other VSEs?
A quick point about this as I've noticed a few rumblings on various other blogs. There is a notion that Google's universal search feature, where Google lists a hodge podge of relevant results from all off their channels in the search results pages (SERPs), will replace vertical search engines (VSEs). You have to remember, at the end of the day, Google currently provides indexes and provides results on documents.
