A Brief History of Kings, Dynasties and the Name of Vietnam At the beginning of the Bronze Age, the Viet tribe groups had settled in the North and North-Centre Vietnam. There were about 15 groups of Lac Viet tribesmen living mainly in the northern highlands and delta, and a dozen Au Viet groups living in Viet Bac, the northern region of old Vietnam. At that time, the two ethnic tribes of the Lac Viet and Au Viet lived together in many areas with other inhabitants. Due to the increasing needs to control floods, fight against invaders, and exchange culture and economy, these tribes living near each other tended to gather and integrate into a larger mixed groups. Among these Lac Viet tribes was the Van Lang, also the most powerful tribe. The leader of this tribe joined all the Lac Viet tribes together to found Van Lang Nation, addressing himself as Hung King. The next generations followed in their father’s footsteps and kept this appellation. Based on historical documents, research

We are the unwilling, led by the unqualified, doing the unnecessary for the ungrateful—from an engraving on a Vietnam-era Zippo lighter In 1965, journalist Morley Safer followed the United States Marines on a search and destroy mission into Cam Ne. When the Marines he accompanied reached the village, they ordered the civilians there to evacuate their homes—grass huts whose thatched roofs they set ablaze with Zippo lighters. Safer’s report on the event soon aired on CBS and was among the first to paint a harrowing portrait of the War in Vietnam. LBJ responded to the segment furiously, accusing Safer of having “shat on the American flag.” For the first time since World War II, American boys in uniform had been portrayed as murderers instead of liberators. Our perception of the war—and the Zippo lighter—would never be the same. But as this stunning book attests, the Zippo was far more than an instrument of death and destruction. For the American soldiers who wielded them, the

Just St Petersburg has officially triumphed over Leningrad at last, it seems as if Saigon is also rising phoenix-like from the ashes of Ho Chi Minh City - in spirit as well as in name. Saigon is the name on everyone's lips, for the entrepreneurial flair of Vietnam's southern metropolis has survived undaunted, and the airport baggage tags never ceased to bear the legend 'SGN' anyway. Nestling between the mountains and forested valleys of Annam lies the former imperial capital of Vietnam. The enchantment of Hue has withstood the depredations of centuries and the vicissitudes of war, including severe damage during the 1968 Tet offensive. For over a century from 1802, the 16th-century capital of the powerful Nguyen princes served as the country's political hub. Man of letters Somerset Maugham, who visited Hue in the 1920s, found the pomp and glory of the court was as breathtaking as the scenery below the Trouong Son Mountains. According to tradition, Hue is the home town of the country's intellectual and academic elite as well as its prettiest girls. A few miles along the Perfume River stands the 17th-century Thien Mu Pagoda, the seven tiers of its octagonal tower each representing a different incarnation of the Buddha. Behind the four citadel-like gates of Da Noi, the Imperial City, lie the Forbidden Purple City and the Yellow Enclosure - a paradise of green meadows

On virtually every corner you will find yourself spirited back a couple of decades or so into a world before fax machines and cable television: a world which has not yet quite caught up with the rampant modernization overtaking arch-rival Saigon at the other end of the country. Hanoi is also hot in pursuit of the more (un)civilizing effects of civilization, of course, but as yet the invasion of mod, cons. and free enterprise is less aggressive here, and still tempered by a refreshing ingenuousness. With their penchant for embellishing history with legendary touches which subsequently even acquired an aura of v
Good morning, Vietnam! Over a decade has passed since Robin Williams' strident catch phrase rang out through the cinemas of the West. The haunting undertone it once held for an entire generation has all but vanished, acquiring instead a new relevance today as the country emerges from its self-imposed isolation. No longer restricted to the images of the first war to be beamed by satellite directly into the world's living rooms, Vietnam is busy putting itself back on the map - for business and even pleasure. The audience may still be coming to terms with the aftermath, trying to digest the horrors as Michael Cimino's Deer Hunter, Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, and Oliver Stone's each added in their own fashion to the retrospective of Vietnamese-American trauma. The Vietnamese themselves, especially the two-thirds of the population aged under thirty, have already fixed their sights firmly on the future. Invasions, colonizations, border skirmishes and internal strife over four mille
Ancestor worship is an indispensable activity for Vietnamese people in special ceremonies, especially at Tet (Lunar New Year). Reported by Thanh, Nguyen “Birds have nests, humans have ancestors” – is a well-known saying that has existed long time ago so the belief of ancestral worship dates is known from that time. It has been playing an important role in Vietnamese and influencing on the spiritual life of the country when Tet comes. Every time Tet comes, Vietnamese carefully prepare for worshipping; they are very serious about this. Ancestor worship, one of the Vietnamese customs, was under the influence of China, but after thousands years of existing, it becomes the Vietnamese particular cultural character and long-standing custom that can be indispensable in every Vietnamese people. Tet is an opportunity to invite and welcome deceased ancestor back for family reunion with their descendants to join the family’s Tet celebration. Preparation for the celebration of the N

Ha Long Bay - VietnamMost visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural setting: the Red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats. There are some divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests। Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world. There are no good or bad seasons to visit Vietnam। When one region is wet, cold or steamy hot, there is always somewhere else that is sunny and pleasant। Basically, the south has two seasons: the wet (May to November, wettest from June to August) and the dry (December to April). The hottest and most humid time is from the end of February to May. The central coast is dry from May to October and wet from December

Over 3.2 million foreign visitors have arrived in the first nine months, a rise of 17 percent year-on-year, a government report said last week.China, South Korea, and the U.S. remained the top sources of tourists in the January-September period. The government expects 4.3 million arrivals in all this year.It forecasts the visitors to spend over US$3.5 billion, a 25 percent increase over last year, making the hospitality industry the third-highest earner of hard currency after remittances and foreign direct investment. However, the image is not so rosy if one considers “visitor density” – the number of international arrivals per 100 locals – which will translate to around five this year. In 2005 the figure was 8.1 in Cambodia, 15.4 in Laos, and almost 200 in Singapore. For this tourism experts blame the country’s poor tourism development strategy and infrastructure and the lack of professional tourist guides. An average of 80 percent of foreign visitors who visited Vietnam never r
