  • Wall St drops as AIG fuels credit worries
By Kristina Cooke NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Monday on renewed worries about credit losses after insurer American International Group Inc received a rebuke from its auditors for how it valued some credit derivatives. The disclosure cast doubt on AIG's past contention that the world's largest insurer didn't face major problems stemming from the credit crisis that has slammed other financial institutions. Shares of AIG fell 11.2 percent to $45, a five-year low and its worst one-day percentage drop since the 1987 stock market crash. That dragged on shares of other financial companies, with the S&P financials index down 2.6 percent. Economic jitters persisted after finance leaders from the Group of Seven major economies said during the weekend problems in the U.S. housing market may lead to worsening conditions as debt-laden banks clamp down on credit. "The concerns about AIG are affecting the financials and are clearly having a negative effect on sentiment,
  • Wall St Week Ahead - Market braces for another grueling week
By Kristina Cooke NEW YORK (Reuters) - Another grueling week for Wall Street could be in store, even as some see value among the wreckage wrought so far this year as fretful investors remain jumpy over prospects for the economy and wary of more trouble at bond insurers. Another worry is whether China's stock market, which was closed for the Lunar New Year holiday during much of the past week's turmoil, could trigger another bout of selling globally when it reopens on Wednesday and tries to catch up. Before then, however, bond insurers, most notably MBIA Inc's MBIA Insurance Corp and Ambac Financial Group Inc's Ambac Assurance Corp, will likely be central to the market's direction, analysts said. The two are on the hook for billions of dollars after guaranteeing repackaged subprime mortgages and other risky debt that have now soured. Deutsche Bank Chief Executive Josef Ackermann, for one, has warned that the bond insurers' difficulties could lead to the next financial crisis. &

  • U.S. STOCKS - Rate-cut expectations lift Wall Street
By Ellis Mnyandu NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks rallied on Monday as investors snapped up shares of financial companies and big manufacturers on hopes that the Federal Reserve would keep slashing interest rates to forestall an economic downturn. Fed policy-makers are due to announce a rate decision on Wednesday at the end of their two-day meeting, and investors are counting on lowered borrowing costs for businesses and consumers to stimulate economic activity. Shares of General Electric Co, seen as a proxy for the economy because of its diversified businesses, rose as did interest-rate sensitive companies, such as credit card provider American Express Co and Bank of America Corp. Shares of home builders were also among the standouts, with the Dow Jones home construction index up 3.73 percent. Government data showing a bigger-than-expected drop in new-home sales last month strengthened the argument for Fed rate cut, analysts said. Lower rates could ease the strain on mortg

By Ellis Mnyandu NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks surged on Monday as investors snapped up shares of manufacturers and downtrodden banks after more weak housing data bolstered expectations the Federal Reserve will slash rates this week. A sharp drop in December new-home sales cemented the view that Fed policy-makers, following last week's emergency rate cut, will make another deep cut in interest rates on Wednesday after the conclusion of a two-day meeting. All three major stock indexes gained more than 1 percent. While the housing data in itself was unsettling, the prospect of lower interest rates coupled with a proposed $150 billion economic stimulus package helped lift shares of manufacturers like General Electric Co and home builders like Hovnanian Enterprises. The S&P financials index rose 2 percent, with index gainers outnumbering decliners by 6 to 1. Archaeologists have excavated the brick structure of a temple more than 1,500 years old and a dilapidated wall from the Gupta dynasty at the Vasu Bihara site of Shibganj upazila in Bogra, Bangladesh.   “During the ongoing archaeological excavation, walls, held together with mud, about two metres wide and antiques including part of an ornamental brick have been found,” said Nahid Sultana, custodian of the department of Archaeology, government of Bangladesh.   According to a report in The Daily Star, most of the bricks on the walls of the temple are 35cm long, 27cm wide and four centimetres thick.   To protect the walls of the main structure of the temple from collapsing, support walls were built with the same kind of bricks.   According to Archaeologist Mahabubul Alam, assistant custodian of the department, the brick built temple resembles the temple of Vasu Bihara constructed during the Pala dynasty, suggesting it belonged to the same period.   &ld
  • Wall St Week Ahead - Recession fears to weigh on earnings reports
By Herbert Lash NEW YORK (Reuters) - A heavy gloom hanging over Wall Street may deepen next week unless such bellwether companies as Apple and United Technologies provide investors with hope that the U.S. economy can avert recession. A slew of major corporations, also including Bank of America Corp, Microsoft Corp and AT&T Inc, will release their quarterly earnings in a shortened trading week that has scant economic data scheduled for release. Markets will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr Day. "Earnings next week are the only thing that the market has to hang its hat on. With the market in such a fragile condition, those earnings better be good or we could see some severe selling," said Richard Sparks, senior equities analyst with Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, on Friday. Investors took little solace this past week from a $150 billion White House rescue plan as stocks fell on enormous losses at Citigroup, the top U.S. bank, and Me

  • Barack Obama: A candidate straight out of Wall Street central casting
It is to early in the campaign for me to get to excited about the 2008 US Presidential election, but it is interesting how the worlds media seems to be wetting itself over Barack Obama, which in itself should be a bit of a wake up call for all progressives. In my opinion Obama lacks political gravitas and seems to me to be in the mould of the European clean skin politicians that have emerged in the last decade, such as Angela Merkel, Tony Blair and David Cameron, Obama’s language is also very similar, slick but meaningless politically. I noticed he has refused to come out in favor of universal health care free at the point of need. If one takes into account that for many US families, health care costs is one if not the most pressing problem they face, then his stance is cowardly to say the least, the more so when one takes into account that the private health care industry is the most powerful political lobby in the USA.I also noticed that when US members of the Republican Party bas

  • WALL•E Trailer During The Superbowl?
Variety via The Pixar Blog reports the list of studios signed on to deliver advertisements during the upcoming Superbowl on Feburary 3 from Phoenix, Arizona. Disney said it was still considering which movies to offer, though "Wall-E," the next toon from Pixar Animation Studios, is a contender, as is "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian." says the article. My take is that Narnia will be easier to promote as it is a sequel, however WALL•E is original and Disney might want to capture everyone's attention with a very cute, but perhaps mysterious trailer, not much different in fact to the one we just received. In which case I think WALL•E deserves the limelight even if Narnia is due for a May release and WALL•E a June release. Do you agree?

  • WALL•E Trailer Attached To National Teasure 2? [Updated]
JV Pixar News reports a source tells him that the theatrical trailer for WALL•E will be attached to National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets later this month in the US on the 21st. His source says, “It’s not attached, but enclosed in the can.” which it's like a Pixar short and attached to the reel. I take this as Disney making sure we all see the trailer if we see NT2. Also the source reveals that the trailer doesn't show it all, but rather keeps us guessing. Hearing this it makes me think Cloverfield, the mystery monster movie due out in January. The marketing styles used between WALL•E and Cloverfield are very similar. Both have used viral websites, and both have had mysterious trailers that keep us guessing. Not that I am doubting the integrity of JV's source, and I'm not saying I don't believe what they are saying, but a contact of mine doesn't know of any theatrical trailer for WALL•E yet. All I am saying is don't get your hopes up. It seem Australia (me!), Hungary and Pu
