Coalition targets al-Qaeda in Iraq networks; seven terrorists killed, 16 detained BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed seven terrorists and detained 16 suspects Wednesday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda networks operating in central and northern Iraq. During a series of operations south of Sharqat Wednesday night and early this morning, Coalition forces targeted an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq leader for the Salah ad-Din province. The targeted suspect is allegedly responsible for the equipping, financing and planning of AQI operations in northern Iraq, and is associated with senior level al-Qaeda members operating inside and outside of the country.  As Coalition forces arrived at one of the target locations, they observed multiple armed personnel maneuvering into position against them. Two armed terrorists fired at Coalition forces, who engaged in self-defense, killing them. A supporting aircraft was called to engage the remaining threat, killing an additional f
  • How My Personal War Affects My Son
During my last hospitalization the ex wife and I came to the decision that my son would not come to visit me while I was on the psych ward. At the time he was three and we did not think that a visit on the psych ward was appropriate for him. Normally the ward is a rather calm and boring place to be but there is times when the floor goes off so we did not want to take the chance plus I was going through withdrawal off of Effexor, Wellbutrin, Remeron and Lithium which had my brain going every which way but the right way. Not exactly the image I wanted to be presented to my son.Every couple of days I would call my son to to see how he was doing and what he was up too. These phone calls were essential for the father son relationship but at the same time they took their toll. Mentally I was in an awful place so I needed to psych myself up for the phone call so he wouldn't have any reason to be worried. My son was told the reason I was in the hospital was because my meds were not worki
  • MAN IS STANDING AT THE GATE THAT OPENS TO WAR
(A Poetic Justice Photomontage) The Death Mask of War (Ad Busters - the magazine)War is also the pornography of violence. It has a dark beauty, filled with the monstrous and the grotesque. War allows us to engage in lusts and passions we keep hidden in the deepest, most private interiors of our fantasy life. It allows us to destroy not only things but human beings. In that moment of wholesale destruction, we wield the power to the divine, the power to revoke another person’s charter to live on this earth. The frenzy of this destruction – and when unit discipline breaks down, or there was no unit discipline to begin with, frenzy is the right word – sees armed bands crazed by the poisonous elixir our power to bring about the obliteration of others delivers. All things, including human beings, become objects – objects to either gratify or destroy or both. Almost no one is immune. The contagion of the crowd sees to that... • Stop Treating Sharia-Supreme Iraq Like Post-War Japan
Diana West - It isn't just that the total defeat and utter devastation of Japan nullifies the comparison with Iraq (which it does). There is something else. There is the completely different U.S. approach to Japan's animating, warlike state religion of Shintoism, which, not incidentally, bears striking similarities to the animating, warlike state religion of Islam.History shows that the conditions that drove the model transformation of Japan do not exist today with regard to the Islamic Middle East. We're going to need another strategy -- for starters, an immigration policy and new laws to halt the creep of Sharia -- to ward off the Islamization of the West.

  • NATO struggles for unity over Afghan war
By Patrick Lannin and Sue Pleming VILNIUS/KABUL (Reuters) - NATO tried to patch over divisions about the war in Afghanistan on Thursday but differences remained over the willingness of some members to contribute troops to the conflict. At a meeting in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, defence ministers with troops fighting fierce battles against the Taliban in the south of Afghanistan backed calls by the United States for more countries to send forces there. On a visit to frontline troops, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and British Foreign Secretary David Miliband kept up pressure on reluctant allies to share the combat burden. Violence has risen sharply in the past two years in Afghanistan, which has been occupied by Western forces for six. Analysts say the country, which under the Taliban's hardline Islamist rule harboured al Qaeda in the years before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, risks becoming a "failed state" again. • Pentagon to seek more war funds before Bush goes
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon will seek more money for 2009 operations in Iraq and Afghanistan before the end of the Bush administration, it said on Tuesday, giving the next president some breathing room on the issue. The administration will ask Congress next week for $70 billion to pay for the wars and related operations for part of the 2009 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, 2008. That would be about a third of the typical annual cost of the wars. The Pentagon had said on Monday the $70 billion would probably be the last funding request for the wars before the end of the Bush administration in January, leaving war funding as one of the first issues facing the next president. But Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said on Tuesday more money would be sought before the end of Bush's term. "We are submitting the $70 billion request with the anticipation that at some point we will go back to the Congress and ask for what else is needed in fiscal year '09," h
  • Lebanon war report could rock Israeli government
By Ari Rabinovitch JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli panel investigating the conduct of the 2006 war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon publishes a final report on Wednesday that could rock Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's government. Though Olmert is unpopular in opinion polls and has lost allies from his fractious coalition government, he has vowed to stay in office and repair any faults found by the inquiry. The government-appointed Winograd commission's interim findings delivered last April were highly critical of Olmert, his government and senior military commanders, spurring calls for the prime minister to resign. The commission cannot recommend that Olmert or others should resign, but the prime minister was widely expected to face harsh words from the five panel members. Last year, Washington scaled down the war games, sending only 400 soldiers after a row over custody of the marine convicted of rape in December 2006. U.S. forces routinely train and advise Philippine military units, build roads, bridges, schools, clinics and conduct other humanitarian activities as part of joint efforts with Washington's closest ally in the region to fight Muslim militants. EA Mythic are releasing Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning later this year (hopefully). I've been looking at a few of the features they intend to have in - specifically, what kind of quest systems and what kind of endgame options there are.The quests look interesting. Alongside the more ordinary kill, escort, and courier ones, there's also the concept of a Public Quest. TenTonHammer says: Public Quests are area based quests that you trigger by crossing over into an area where a Public Quest is taking place. Basically, once you're in the area, you can help with the quest. They're things that no solo player could achieve, but that a mass of people can, without the organisation necessary for raid-type content. It looks to me to be a bit like the War Effort way back when in World of Warcraft - you get rewards for participating, the more you do, the more you get, and you can drop in an out as you want, rather than having to be there all the time. Then there's the Tome of Knowledge, which
