Panasonic has decided to take matters into its own hands and has designed a new breed of plasma TVs with tough screens. It didn’t take a world of tinkering though since plasmas are more rigid than other TVs anyway. A bit of twitching and TVs were Wii-proof. The specially designed display is resistant up to 4 joules. Joule translated roughly refers to energy required to lift an apple 2 meters in the air. Figure that out! Panasonic didn’t come out all bragging in Valencia but backed its design with a LCD panel all smashed up by Wii. Thanks to the Virtual Console, the Wii has probably the best library of shmups in history. You can go play something like Lords of Thunder or Blazing Lazers right now without even having to go to a store first. That's pretty compelling. Which means that original disc-based shooters actually face a lot of competition from the VC. Will Brawl fall to the Wii's casual focus?Filed under: News An interesting opinion piece by JC Barnett popped up on GameSetWatch yesterday, which covered the familiar area of the general lack of success of "hardcore" games on the Wii, specifically in Japan. Barnett's prime example is No More Heroes, which, despite being hyped like crazy (and also despite being really awesome) totally bombed. A "punk rock game" from Suda 51 isn't really prime hit material, being somewhat niche by design, but Barnett uses this as an example of a game that doesn't fit with the Wii audience.He then wonders out loud if Super Smash Bros. I picked up my Wii on Black Friday and consider myself very lucky. The store I waited in front of, from 11pm until they opened at 7am only had 5 Wii units available and since I was 5th in line, I was a lot more fortunate then the 15 people behind me. After my long night I promptly went home and caught some Z’s only to be awoken by my eager kids and even more eager wife a few hours later.We all gathered around for the opening of the box and we all got our first true look at the console. My first impressions were obviously based around the color and design of the hardware and the uniqueness of the controller (wii-remote). The unit was very small compared to that of Sony’s Playstation 3 and Mircosoft’s Xbox 360 and is about the size of 3 dvd cases
Best Buy fears Wii mob scenesReceiving a number of Wiis just in time for Christmas is a real joy and, at the same time, a real problem for retailers across the country, as the people are so desperate for the Nintendo machine, that you don’t know what they’ll do. So I guess I can understand why some Best Buy shops avoid displaying or announcing their newly received Nintendo Wiis. Dave Wolf, General Manager at a Best Buy near Baltimore, said that he chose not to display any Wii in the shop, in stead employees walk around and tell people they have them in stock.
