  • Help, My Wife Only Drinks Bad Chardonnay! (How to Rescue Her From Wine Hell)
(images: nigella.com, mikesblog.typepad.com, gamerevolution.com, totalgambler.com)Warning: This post details - and advocates - actions that are sneaky, surreptitious, and downright manipulative. If you are of tender constitution, or high moral standing, I suggest that you turn away now.Still with me? Great - that's why I love my readers! You people ROCK!Please note: In this post, you will encounter the use of Chardonnay and femine pronouns. I'm using 'Chardonnay Oak-Butter bombs' simply as an example in this post - you can feel free to replace that with any wine vareital / style that you don't like. Similarly, I'm using the female pronoun because it matches my particular experience - feel free to substitute the male equivalent to suit your needs. Anyway, this will all make sense in a minute or two (I use that phrase a lot... is that, like, a mulligan for bad writing?). Got it? Good - let's get down to business! The Problem: Wine HellMany of you will be familiar with this scenario
  • Fermentation's 2008 American Wine Blog Awards (Rock the Vote!)
I would like to give a huge shout out of thanks to my readers for voting for me in the 2008 American Wine Blog Awards!I have a great deal of respect for what Tom Wark is doing over at his Fermentation blog, especially his continued fight against monopolized wine shipping - there's a passion that we both share!Having said all that - I don't think I'm eligible to receive any of the 2008 American Wine Blog Awards. According to Tom's blog:"Any wine blog in existence between January 1, 2007 and the end of January 2008, that has produced at least 52 posts during that time and is written in English is eligible to be nominated..."Technically, 1WineDude.com has been around almost that long, but not quite - since February 2007. And while the total number of posts in that time is close, it's not quite 52. So it looks like I'm out on both counts. Now, I can't stop you from voting for / nominating me (and believe me, Dude appreciates the love - and the free publicity!), but I certainly hope I do
  • Wine bar, Antibes
Note: French version of this post is here on La cuisine de BabethImportant: don't forget to check: Help beat sarcomaLast week we tried for the third time a new wine bar down to our place. It's located in the old part of Antibes in a charming street. From the farmer market you turn onto the bar à Absynthe's street and here you go!The wine bar itself is all gray, very trendy! Didn't they say gray is the new black ? hum :-) Anyway you enter a tiny old boutique, downstairs: wines on display, upstairs: the bar itself no more than 10 to 12 seatings. The wine is served with homemade finger food and you can order some more if you feel like it.Our wine, Sauternes one of my favorite, was served with foie gras mousse with gressinis (long Italian bread sticks) and some charcuterie.Bar à vin: Les Sens10 rue Sade06600 Antibestel: 04 93 74 57 06lessensantibes@orange.fr

  • Weekly Wine Web Wrap-up - V-Day Hangover Edition
Welcome to the post-Valentine's Day Hangover edition of the Weekly Wine Web Wrap-up (where Dude highlights some of his favorite wine news items over the past week)! Is it Getting Hot in Here, or is it Just Me?You'd have been hard-pressed (ha-ha) to miss stories this week about the impact of global warming on the wine world, such as this nice article from the AFP. According to the report, the French in particular are in big trouble. The article does not state how the U.S. will save France this time around (we can only assume America will want to go for the "Bail France Out Trifecta" having already performed that service when France was threatened by phylloxera, and zee Germans...).And the Winner Is...Once again, Gallo is tops in U.S. domestic wine sales, shipping an estimated 66 million cases in America during 2007. That's about 792 million bottles of wine, or 59.4 billion ml of our favorite beverage. The only comparison to that in the scientific world in terms of concentration is sp
  • The Official 1WineDude Wine "Mini-Reviews" Page (published via twitter)
In January of 2008, I began to get into the Wine 2.0 conversation and started to post wine reviews on twitter. For those of you not familiar with twitter, it's essentially a 'micro-blogging' platform that allows you to post short updates about what's happening in your life. And when I say short, I mean it - there's a 140 character limit enforced on each post (hence, the 'micro' part). At about the same time, I also began participating in another form of Wine 2.0 wine review expression at Chateau Petrogasm, where no words are used - you review a wine with a sole image of your choosing. You might expect that a limit of 140 characters (or 0 characters) would be, well, limiting. So far, I've found just the opposite to be true. Both processes have been far from limiting - in fact, they've been downright liberating. When you're forced to boil down your reactions and thoughts in just a few words (or no words), you chose what you're going to say very, very carefully. No scores. No detailed hi
  • Wine Makes You Sexier (I'm just sayin'...)
(image: www.yandy.com)And it's not because the object of your desire becomes more desirable after you've put on the "wine goggles."According to a survey jointly sponsored by the Australian Wine Council and on-line dating service Match.com, having a healthy knowledge of the world's most romantic beverage makes you more attractive, with those people preferring Italian wines being viewed as particularly "sexy" and "stylish."There's still plenty of time for you to order up a copy of Vino Italiano and join us for the first Wine Book Club. Just sayin'...Wine X Magazine (as reported by autumnilia) backs up the "wine = sexier" conclusion in an interview with sexpert Dr. Ruth, who tells us that wine is an essential element of foreplay (she prefers Beaujolais Nouveau, gewurztraminer, and CA white, so those may be some of the sexiest wine choices, seeing as how she's a sexpert and whatnot- again, just sayin').Finally - If you're totally desperate on this most Hallmark of holidays, Yahoo! • WBW #42 - Seven Word Wine Review (Banfi Rosso di Montalcino)
This month's edition of Wine Blogging Wednesday comes to us courtesy of Spitton.biz, who have tasked the collective talents of the budding wine blogging community by asking us to review an Italian Red, using just seven words.Tricky, to say the least (get it?); especially for those of us whose prose, how shall I put this... does not value highly the elegance of the concise. But let's not sell ourselves short (get it??), or wax too philosophically about the relative merits of our brief (get it?!?) and minute (get it?!??) contribution to the great big blogosphere.Ok, ok... I'll stop!Anyway, for this excellent exercise in enological economy, Dude chose an old stand-by wine: Castello Banfi's Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C. (2003, Tuscany). Before Dude delves deep into the diminutive depiction of this dapper delicacy, let us first examine some way-cool background information so you can get up close and personal with what Rosso di Montalcino is all about....Most wine lovers have at least heard abo
  • Moore Wine Reviews!
There are 'wine shops,' and then there are shops staffed and owned by people who are seriously passionate about vino, and just happen to also sell some of their favorite wines to the public.Moore Brothers happens to be one of the latter. I was fortunate enough to make a recent trip to one of their stores (the location to remain a secret, lest the PA wine monopoly authorities gain an interest in how I came about the wine from the shop...), where I was greeted by a friendly staff (including fellow blogger David McDuff) who clearly knew their wine. What a refreshing change from the state-run PA monopoly wine stores...Those of you living in the greater NY/NJ/DE area should make it a point to check out your nearest Moore Bros. store ASAP. I can't promise you a discount if you drop my name there, but I can promise they will knock your socks off with their deep knowledge of small estate wines from Germany, France, and Italy. Those of you following Dude's wine reviews in Twitter and in Cha
  • Weekly Wine Web Wrap-up - In-Flight Dining Edition
Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Weekly Wine Web Wrap-up, where Dude highlights the wine news stories of the past week (complete with snide Dude commentary, of course!).Cover Globally, Vinify LocallyThe highest profile wine news coverage of the week is likely this article in U.S.A. Today, which details the growing trend of 'micro-brew' wineries in urban areas that source their grapes and/or juice from rural vineyards. A handful of these wineries and their winemakers in NY and the midwest are featured by name (thus ensuring that their websites crash and their ISP demand additional hosting charges for their traffic overages)."Pardon me, old chap, but can I have my $36,000 back?"The UK Press Association reported this week of a Zafferano restaurant customer (in London) who returned a bottle of the legendary 1961 Ch. Petrus that cost the bargain price of £18,000 (about $36K USD), under the complaint that it might have been a fake. The restaurant told him that the wine was off-tasting an

  • More Reasons Why Wine Monopolies Suck (Fight the Power!)
UPDATE (1PM ET): I'd like to send out a special welcome to all of the PA State government folks who, according to my site stats, have been reading this post. The wine world wants to know your viewpoints on these topics, so please shout 'em out in the comments section of this post if you're inclined.I suppose by now it's no secret that I can't stand the archaic, and probably unconstitutional three-tier monopoly wine distribution system still in effect in some states, including my hometown in the "Communistwealth" of Pennsylvania. The lucky numbers of you out there in blogosphere-land that are allowed to purchase the wine of your choosing, for a fair price, and have it shipped directly to your doorstep don't really know the suffering that we unlucky hordes in PA have to deal with when shopping for wine. Most readers will remember the board game Monopoly, in which players compete to take control of the highest amount of properties and services that they can, resulting in fees so high tha
  • Weekly Wine Web Wrap-up - Groundhog's Day Edition
Welcome to the first edition of the Weekly Wine Web Wrap-up (W4..?), where Dude shares some of his favorite wine news bites from the past week (Dude spends a goodly amount of time trolling the 'net for interesting wine tidbits)!Giant Wine Glasses Invade BritainIn this article from the International Herald Tribune, the Associated Press reports that Britain's Parliament blames part of the country's rising tide of problem drinking (particularly among women) on the growing portion size of common servings of alcoholic beverages, like wine. I've previously cautioned about the same thing (restaurant wine glass portion size, that is) for wine lovers to look out for when dieting.Cult Cabernet Prices Aren't the Only Wine Crime in CAThe Napa Valley register reported on what appears to be an inside job of high-end wine theft from Jackson Family (Kendall-Jackson) Wines in Sonoma County. • Wine Book Club 1st Edition, and Tasteless Exploitation of Naomi Watts
OK, so Dude is waaaaaaaaaaaaay late in giving this event props and publicity blogging love... But in the case of love, later is always better than never (that's what I always say anyway - and I come from a fine, distinguished, and long line of justifiers!).The on-line Wine Book Club has been launched earlier this month, with the first edition being hosted over at McDuff's Food & Wine Trail. I met David McDuff recently at Moore Brothers and I can tell you from first-hand experience that the guy has serious wine smarties, especially when it comes to boutique Italian, German, French, and Austrian wineries. So by the Dude's standards, David seems like a splendid choice to get the wine book club ball a'rolling. The first wine book that will be reviewed by the Wine Club is Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy by Joseph Bastianich & David Lynch. No, not that David Lynch!...This David Lynch is the beverage director over at NYC's celebrated restaurant Babbo. • Making Sense of "Wine 2.0" (Power to the People!)
Wine 2.0Whenever I'm asked about Wine 2.0, the conversation usually goes something like this:"Hey Dude - what exactly is Wine 2.0 anyways? Is that, like, some future technology where wine will get instantly zapped into my glass, like on Star Trek? 'Cause that would, like, seriously rule."Uh... not quite. I've found this a confusing topic as well, and I'm even a tech-savvy nerd-type. After all, it's a bit of an amorphous term, but even the casual wine geek will have noticed the term cropping up on the web. It must be important if everyone's talkin' about it, right? Some wine blogs even have their own sections devoted to it.So what is this Wine 2.0 stuff all about?...Wine 2.0 is basically just the concepts of Web 2.0 applied to the world of wine. And it's starting to turn that world on its head (er, cork)!"Power To The People - Right On!"Wine 2.0 might best be described as "Power to the People."Web 2.0 is about the migration of publishing and social network out of the hands of a (
  • Bahamas: A major alcohol importer says, "Raising taxes on alcohol, especially wine, would have a strong negative impact on the hotel sector, it would increase already high prices on the wine list..."
Bristol says spiking alcohol tax would hurt hotels: By VERNON CLEMENT JONES, Senior Business Reporter - Nassau, Bahamas: A major alcohol importer is cautioning the government against adopting recommendations to raise taxes on that product, arguing the move would devastate a hotel industry already awash in complaints over high bar tabs. "It certainly would not be a good thing," said Eddie Gardner, VP of sales and marketing for Bristol Wines and Spirits. "Raising taxes on alcohol, especially wine, would have a strong negative impact on the hotel sector, it would increase already high prices on the wine list. "Tourists already complain that the prices are too high because they're paying $19 for wine that would cost them $9 in the States." Gardner is focused on possible fallout from any move to increase the government's revenue stream courtesy of alcohol taxes. Last week, a special committee of public servants proffered the idea, suggesting an increase in duties and stamp tax o
  • Wine Communism: U.S. State's Non-Compliance to Wine Shipping Laws
Here's a little quiz for all of you out there in wine-land. What do you call a government that:Limits the choices of products available to its citizens by offering them only via government-run monopoly that has no incentive to provide competitive prices, good customer service, or expanded selection;Charges its citizens a premium for the "privilege" of the products limited choices & poor service, including taxation on goods already controlled by the government;Refuses to change archaic legislation that was enacted over 50 years ago, in order to protect its monopoly position & profits;Does nothing to alter its stance or comply with changing federal law, nearly three years after its current legislation has been deemed unconstitutional at both the federal and regional levels? In most circles, the first two points could be considered Communism.Technically, the later two points aren't Communism, but I'd like to think that most people would at least consider them reprehensible...Unfor
  • On Drinking Wine
People seem to struggle when it comes time to selecting wine. My co-worker Marcos would insert a pun here, something like "whine is not delicious." However, most agree that wine, without the 'h', is delicious. The question is, how do you pick the best wine?It seems odd that buying and picking wine makes so many people uncomfortable, but it shouldn't, it's really not that hard. So first, let's debunk a few myths and then consider a few basic tips.Myths to Ignore:Expensive wine is better wine. Wrong! Although some recent research shows that when people think wine is expensive, they think it tastes better, even when it's the same wine! Many wonderful wines are available for less than $10.Vintage is important. Barely! In days gone by, grape farmers had limited ability to manage the dramatic changes of weather, and therefore the impact on grapes between good and bad seasons could be huge. Advancements in farming and winemaking, including the blending of various vintages, mean that vintage
  • In the Blogosphere: How Wine Sulfite Regulations Impact Winemakers
The wine sulfites battle rages on.Some of you will recall that the Dude has been commenting on the topics of sulfites in wine, as well as biodynamic and organic wines.Jason Haas over at Tablas Creek Vineyard has posted a great article on how the widely misunderstood fear of wine sulfite allergies (& "wine headaches") has combined with overly-cautious (and poorly-constructed) U.S. wine regulations to cause winemakers unnecessary grief...What U.S. Sulfite / Organic Regulations Mean for WinemakersIn a nutshell, it seems that the U.S. regulations regarding sulfite use for wines that are to be labeled 'organic' have a big negative impact on potential quality of the wine. That's because some use of sulfites in higher quality wines is inevitable - otherwise the finished wine could be too unstable.According to the Guidelines for Labeling: Wine with Organic References from the U.S. Dept. of Treasury - Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms:SULFITE STATEMENT“100% Organic” products can
  • In The News: US Wine Consumption on the Rise - *Again*
There's a great little article by Janice Jones in today's Sierra Sun about the rising tide of wine consumption in the U.S.According to the article, the U.S. has surpassed Italy and is now on the heels of France to claim the title of the world's largest consumers of wine by volume (at 2.77 gallons per wine drinker per year). Though I think Luxembourg still holds the title in terms of wine consumption per capita. What is most interesting about the article is the picture it paints of just how vast our wine choices are here in the U.S. - 7,000 different brands (with the $20 and under category making up most of the market). That's just... HUGE!How's a wine consumer supposed to navigate that kind of territory?...Janice offers some sound advice on this: keep track of what you're drinking, so you can build up your 'Wine IQ' and form the vocabulary to accurately describe what tastes you like - and don't like - in your wine. Preferably by using a notebook and writing down your wine experiences.

  • Does This Wine Make Me Look Fat?: How To Drink Wine While You're on a Diet
Dieting - how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... OK, DONE!No one really enjoys dieting, and while we may be of the epicurean mindset, even us wine lovers need to count the calories once in a while. To get our New Year's resolutions off to the right start, I've put together some information for wine lovers who might be wondering how wine factors into their their dieting plans...All alcoholic beverages have calories. This includes wine. Most wines contain a very small amount of sugars - a few grams - even wines that are totally "dry." Very sweet dessert wines contain a bit more, but overall this will still be less than 10 grams on average. You may even find a small amount of Sodium (about 1% the recommended daily amount) and even carbs (around 5 grams, or about 2% DV). But those all contribute a very small amount of calories to the overall wine experience.A Wine's calories are largely a factor of alcohol content. Alcohol content accounts for 80% or more of the calories in

  • Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus - But there's No Sulfite-Free Wine
My sister (a chemist) recently sent me an e-mail requesting some wine advice:"I've got a friend at work who has been looking for a sulfite-free wine. Do you know of any that are any good?"My answer: "Nope."Not that a sulfite-free wine might not be any good, it's just that right now, sulfite-free wines are like governments that don't tax - they don't exist! Why this is has a lot to do with chemistry (lucky for me my sis is a chemist!). Which is one of the many splendid things when it comes to learning about wine - wine exposes you not just to the sensory pleasures of drinking it, but to the art/magic of constructing a good one along with the chemistry, agriculture, geography, and geology that go into making good wine. Lucky for you Dude has already done his homework in these areas (otherwise he'd have failed all those pesky wine certification exams...), so you don't have to!...But before we delve into the chemistry, let's examine a bit of background on the whole wine / sulfite thang:My

This post will explore the second (and most important) thing you need to do in order to up your wine IQ - Taste. To know wine, you need to taste wine. There are no shortcuts, and it's pretty much impossible to overstate the importance of building up your tasting vocabulary and knowledge via the simple act of tasting a glass of wine. • Iron and Wine - Boy With a Coin (SOTD#9)
I love Sam Beam aka Iron and Wine. Let me start by saying the best show I have attended to date was Iron and Wine with Calexico October 28, 2005 in Oklahoma. Sam was amazing live (even if he ignored my cries to play "Cinder and Smoke"!) I left the show with great memories and an even bigger fan of the music than before. Sam's sophmore album, Our Endless Numbered Days quickly became a favorite; and in my opinion, not much could top it. Fast-forward to June or July of 07 when I first heard “Boy With a Coinâ€, I&W's then-new single. I was enraptured with glee, pleased with the new direction Beam had decided to go with his third album Sheperd’s Dog. "Boy With A Coin" hoists bending acoustic guitar notes, a chorus of clapping hands, African-drums and a variety of other effects to achieve a lively folk song, rich in sound and erupting with quality. I&W far exceeded my expectations, I was proven wrong.Browse my Songs of the Week playlist to hear "Boy With a Coin" the first single from th

  • Craft Beer, Signature Cocktails and Organic Wine Top List of Restaurant Beverage Trends, National Restaurant Association Research Finds
New National Restaurant Association research shows that alcohol is among the hottest culinary trends in restaurants. A survey of more than 1,000 professional chefs -- American Culinary Federation members -- ranks craft beer, energy drink cocktails, martinis, mojitos, artisan liquors, organic wine and specialty beer in the top 20 trends. In addition to cocktails and bar drinks, alcohol is also used as an ingredient in cooking and as part of meals and menus through food-alcohol pairings."While wine, beer and spirits have always been part of the culinary arts and restaurant menus, specialty alcohol is increasingly popular right now," said Dawn Sweeney, President and CEO of the Association. "As American diners are growing increasingly sophisticated, adult beverages can be an important part of both recipes and meals.
