Winter

  • Winter BLAH
I'm frustrated.I'm still aching from my tumble down the stairs Saturday night, which isn't helping things. For some reason, ever since I did it I've been feeling this general anxiousness...not as much mentally as physically. Worse towards the evening. I start rocking, and rubbing my hands on my thighs, and I feel restless and agitated. Does anyone know why this is? I don't know if its my body's response to the general aching or not...it happens even when I'm not in really bad discomfort. It could just be my muscles are all tensing up and its making me anxious, or whatever bodily chemicals are released to repair injuries is causing it. When I'm not anxious, all I've wanted to do is sleep. I've been napping through the day, and still sleeping through the night. I never banged my head so I know its not a concussion or anything like that.Add to all this, I am BORED. It is -12 with a -21 windchill outside right now. Absolutely everything is covered with old crusted snow and layers of ice. I
  • Mildest Swedish Winter In Years!
Sweden is experiencing a rather unusual winter this year, in fact, it is the mildest in the history of the nation since temperature records first began being recorded in 1756. If the remainder of the winter continues at the present rate it will mark an unheralded warm period for the cold months of the year. [...]

Yes. Again. Or should I just say still since it seems never-ending?!Taken around 1am:I still have to try to make the bus trek to the store for some Valentine's day chocolate for Jay. I don't know if its going to happen though; between this cold, snow, and like a lot of the other female bloggers this week, tonight I started Hell week, just in time for Valentines day! (Insert grumbling and temper tantrum here).I'm starting to go a bit bonkers, way too cold to attempt the bus lately, and I would need snowshoes. Maybe I need to get away? Maybe if not somewhere warm and tropical then somewhere with a big cabin and a nice big fireplace complete with oversized fuzzy rug. Now, if I could only travel like this:

Wow, I am tired of winter. We've had a couple nice days recently and it really makes you want spring to come a bit sooner. Glad I don?t live in Russia! My in-laws will be here soon. My wife will meet them in Ekaterinburg next month and fly back with them. She is getting exited for them to get here. It has taken about a year and a half for the entire process to get them green cards. Her parents have sold their apartment and are waiting to close the deal at the end of this month. Then they will finish selling/giving away the things they won?t be able to bring. They will be purchasing a manufactured home from us that we've been renting to my son. So, they will even have their own place, and it's only 5 minutes away from us. I imagine it will be difficult for them to leave their country, but exciting as well. They came to see us about 2 years ago and loved it here. My wife and step daughter are their only family and I suppose they are missed dearly. So this also means no more trips

  • Winter Exploded
As promised, here are the pictures from the latest winter storm. The daylight ones are from yesterday morning, the darker ones are from early this morning. See that awesome shovelling job? That was done by me with a spade of all things! (Since we live in a condo complex, we have never needed a snow shovel). But it was 6am and walkways weren't done, so I wanted to try to spare my husband's work shoes since the snow was up to my knees. I actually had to push snow off our small porch since it was actually up and over it. And just to show that mother nature has a sense of humour....we may be getting an additional 5cm on Saturday and another 5cm on Tuesday. Fantastic.
  • 8 Steps To Win The Battle Against Dry Winter Skin
Winter is the season of itchy, flaky, and irritated skin. There are a number of products out there, like dry body oil spray, that work wonders. There are also quite a few things you can do to keep your complexion healthy and well nourished. 1 - Drink Lots Of Water. This is a simple thing most of us forget to do, and it can have many benefits during winter when the air is dry. Your body needs water constantly, and having several glasses throughout the day will ensure that your body gets what it needs. This water rejuvenates every part of your body, and even gets to your pores. Drink lots of water, and you will notice a much more beautiful complexion. 2 - Use Cold Water. Whenever you are rinsing your hands or washing, use cold water in the winter. This may seem odd, but actually hot water dries you out. 3 - Get Rid Of Dry Skin. Have you noticed how a certain area of your face or hands gets dehydrated, and then seems to keep getting drier and drier? This is because the dead skin actually

  • How to keep your dog active in the winter
In the bitter cold of winter, these little guys absolutely cannot stay out for more than a minute or two. And dogs are like us...they eat more in the winter to build the fat they need to keep warm. So how do we keep them from getting overweight?Although my dogs love to wrestle and chase each other, it's not sustained long enough for them to get a good workout. So I devised a little game where I grab some of their toys, throw them and make them chase the toys throughout the house. I toss it up the stairs, into a different room and across the basement floor. Our oldest loves his toys. God forbid anyone takes one of them because he'll hunt it down until the end of time. Our youngest doesn't give a rip about the toys, unless he's taking one to tease his brother. So the chase scenario works rather well. Our oldest tears after his precious toy and the youngest follows because he wants to grab it first so he can torment his brother with it. The other part of the game is "hiding" the toy. I'll

  • China battles "coldest winter in 100 years"
By John Ruwitch CHENZHOU, China (Reuters) - Millions remained stranded in China on Monday ahead of the biggest holiday of the year as parts of the country suffered their coldest winter in a century. Freezing storms have killed scores of people and left travellers stranded before the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival -- the only opportunity many people have to take a holiday all year. They have also brought China unwanted negative publicity six months before the Summer Olympics in Beijing. President Hu Jintao chaired an emergency Politburo meeting on Sunday for the second time in a week to discuss rescue efforts. "We have to be clear-minded that the inclement weather and severe disaster will continue to plague certain regions in the south," said a statement issued after Sunday's meeting. "Relief work will continue to face challenges, posing a tough task." The China Meteorological Administration said the weather was the coldest in 100 years in central Hu

  • Avoid the Winter Blues with a Unique Japanese Exercise
It's winter again and as the daylight hours shorten many people become afflicted with what has become known as seasonal affect disorder (or, aptly named, SAD). Most people are affected to one degree or another by SAD or SAD-like symptoms. It is a perfectly normal change in the brain that occurs each year as it gets darker earlier and is thought to be the result of altered brain chemistry caused by fewer hours of exposure to sunshine. The condition can become so significant that some people may require professional intervention. Normally, the brain creates a chemical called serotonin in response to exposure to sunshine. This chemical is largely responsible for producing a happy, healthy mood in a person. Because days are shorter in the fall and winter our brains make less of this chemical and this can lead to SAD. Having bright lights on in the fall and winter afternoon is one way to keep your serotonin levels up, but another healthier way is through exercise. Now, most Americans don't e

  • How To Maintain the Weight in Winter
A beautiful slender figure is a pride for a woman. But girls often recall about this a month before they have to wear bathing suits. In order not to have to figure out in the last moment a way to loose the gained fat over the winter, we just need to not stock it. But what to do if in cold weather we want to eat particular often, and especially a lot?First of all, establish the purpose to remain slender. Keep in mind the image of yourself in the best form. Whenever you want to ravage your refrigerator, recall that image - and even if it wont stop you, then at least will make you eat less.Write in a notebook or diary what, when and why you ate something. It happens so that a person does not want to eat because of hunger, but because of stress. With this diary, in a little while you will be able to see some patterns. Rather than eating, find an interesting occupation, for example, chat with friends or take a relaxing bath.Eat more soup. The liquid itself quickly fills the stomach and prev

Every winter we face the same problem - the mud.and the salt, which is poured on the roads, practically kills the shoes. Even the shoes of the very good leather do not survive long. But there is a way to protect shoes and not permit the salty white shades disfigure it.The most common means of caring for leather shoes is a silicon sponge. But do not entrust in it all expectations - it can only make a shiny effect of the shoes, and that not for long. The sponge is rapidly accumulating dust and dries. It is preferred a sponge that are really impregnate with silicone, otherwise it would not have even the minimum water-resistant effect. But the shoe-polish is a really good protection. It protects against water and has beneficial effects on the leather. Remember that you have to apply the cream on a clean shoe. The shoe washing must be done with a soft tissue and soap. It has been quite cold since, with temperatures averaging around 0°Centigrade. We haven't had had any fresh snow but what we got stayed with us.It is still a little strange somehow.I remember winters in Birmingham when it snowed. We had 2 inches of snow during the night; it was turned grey by the buses by 7 in the morning and had most likely disappeared by evening. Here the snow plow comes through at 5 in the morning and clears the roads. If it's a sunny day the remains of the snow on the roads will melt and dry. If the temperatures don't rise above somewhere round 10°C the rest of the snow won't be affected.I had visitors over Christmas. Their children were thrilled to be able to get the sledges and toboggans out of the barn, drag them up the hill and hurtle back down again. Every day for a week - fo
