The Hollywood Writers Guild strike that ended last week has been the longest strike in 20 years with the participation of 10,500 writers on the first day itself boosting the cause. The bone of contention for the writers has been copyrights and royalties from movies and TV programming distribution on the Internet, of which they were not a part of. The agreement that lead to the end of the strike reportedly confers a flat fee of $US1,200 for content that is streamed online for the first two years. This will be followed by a two percent pay of the distributor’s gross in the third year including a fee for downloading web content. The Internet is literally a cesspool of information. Individuals can access nearly anything and everything on the Internet if they but possess the means and methods to do so. The new wave of content sharing and distribution on the Internet depends a lot on the very words that pose a threat to the creative talents of these artists- free and unlicensed.

The heads of the striking Writers Guild of America urged members to end their crippling three-month strike yesterday after reaching a tentative deal with the Hollywood studios."Continuing to strike now will not bring sufficient gains to outweigh the potential risks...The time has come to accept this contract and settle the strike," the guild's presidents said in a letter. The union leadership explained details of the proposed contract to members on both coasts yesterday. The 12,000 rank-and-file members could return to work tomorrow if they support the agreement. "I'm hoping for a deal," said Mark St. Germain, 53, a former writer for "The Cosby Show" as he arrived for the WGA East session in Manhattan. "Everybody wants to go back to work under the right circumstances," St. Germain added. Oscar-nominated WGA member Michael Moore said the strike was already a success because the writers stood up to the powerful studios. "I would expect it from the steelworkers or the auto workers," Moore
“It’s over,” former Walt Disney chief executive Michael Eisner told CNBC. “They made the deal, they shook hands on the deal. “
There’s tons of news and information to absorb on this topic of conversation:

The Writers Guild of America plans to brief its members this weekend on a deal taking shape to end their 3-month-old strike, using the meetings to gauge rank-and-file support for the labor plan, union leaders said on Tuesday. If members react favorably to the proposed deal at meetings set for Saturday in New York and Los Angeles, WGA leaders could act to lift or suspend the strike while a formal ratification process gets under way, two sources told Reuters. Those sources, who are familiar with the circumstances but are barred from speaking publicly about them under a media blackout for the talks, cautioned, however, that no formal deal with the studios was yet in place. They said negotiators were still working out fine points in the contract language.Hard-liners among the guild's leadership are expected to recommend a cautious approach on what steps to take next."There's lots of members urging the strike lasts until the contract is signed and ratified by the guild," one source said. The l

Silent Voices is anthology of contemporary writing by five British Somali writers who powerfully express their views of being Somali in Britain, covering some of the controversial issues that have impacted each of their lives. The book was born as part of Monsoon Press’s Hidden Voices Programme funded by the Arts Council and has enabled previously unknown writers to product this fascinating and touching collection of extraordinary literary pieces. After more than a century of Somali presence in the UK, there is still a lack of knowledge about who they are. Many are misrepresented and the assumption is made that all are asylum seekers, are involved in crime gangs or are uneducated and unskilled. Silent Voices attempts to dispel some of these bigoted perceptions by presenting to the world a wealth of hidden talent from five writers who find expression through their eloquent prose and poetry. One of the contributors, 33-year-old Zahrah Awaleh, was born and raised in England. Zahrah

TINA FINEBERG/ASSOCIATED PRESS Robin Williams, left, who picketed with strikers, will be on the Letterman show on Wednesday. In the first competitive move in what may become an A-list booking-war blitz, David Letterman has landed the comedian and film star Robin Williams as the first guest when “The Late Show” returns to CBS television Wednesday night. Skip to next paragraph Related Awkward Encounters in the Hollywood Trenches (December 31, 2007) Mr. Williams, who has always been a popular guest for all the late-night shows, will replace Donald J. Trump, who had been scheduled as Mr. Letterman’s first guest when it was expected that the show would have to return while still being picketed by the striking Writers Guild of America. But Mr. Letterman’s company, Worldwide Pants, reached a separate agreement with the guild last week that will allow his show, as well as the one that follows on CBS, “Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson,” to employ regular staff writers.

LONDON, Dec 17 (Reuters) - British Open champion Padraig Harrington has added the 2007 Golf Writers' Trophy to his European Tour Golfer of the Year award. The 36-year-old Irishman won a 75 percent share of the vote in the annual poll of Golf Writers. "I was thrilled to get the news I had won the golf writers' award," Harrington said in a statement on Monday. "I have a great respect for the writers' organisation and it means a lot to find myself bracketed alongside such great former winners, especially Irish players Joe Carr (1953), Harry Bradshaw (1958) and Christy O'Connor Snr (1977). "All are great heroes of mine." Briton Justin Rose, who won the European order of merit, was second in the vote ahead of Scotland's World Cup-winning duo Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren. (Editing by Alison Wildey)My ThoughtsPadraig had a wonderful season and has totally deserved the Golf Writers' Trophy and the European Tour Golfer of the Year awardsMaybe next year I will get invited to vote ;-)
My thoughts about the writers strike in Hollywood that has effect TV show, talk shows and more. I am glad they deserve to be paid so much more than they do. I do think the writers have the right to strike why should the TV stars of the show make all the money. Along with other pieces in the puzzle that makes a TV show come to life like directors, creators and more. It always bugged me how the stars of show made all the money when the people who create the show make hardly anything. The writers deserve to make just as much or even more than them. Because as we know if it was not for the writers would be no show for an actor to act in.
At 10 a.m. today, hundreds of Buffy, Angel and Firefly fans will converge on Fox Studios to walk the picket line alongside some of their favorite writers and actors, in yet another example of how the WGA is enlisting the support of television viewers to send a message to the studios.

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” doesn’t employ union writers and will continue uninterrupted.

Things are nuts in LA right now — there is very likely about to be a Writers Guild strike as there appears to be an impasse between the studios and the Guild. I know a lot of you will have questions about it, but to be honest, there are so many complicated issues that I can’t explain them all but if you go to DEADLINEHOLLYWOOD.COM, ARTFULWRITER.COM, UNITEDHOLLYWOOD.COM those 3 sites can give you some insight as to what writers are feeling and if you go to the AMPTP’s website, you can get the studio’s point of view. If a strike happens, PB will air probably through episode 13 … then we’d be on that long break that PB takes every season anyway, and then we’d come back for the second half of the season (that is, of course, if the strike is over) But we’d be behind on scripts and production because, basically, everything shuts down when there is a work stoppage from writers or actors or directors or teamsters or whatever. I didn’t want this strike to happen (still might n

Though the "inspirational teacher" theme may feel done to death, Freedom Writers succeeds because it emphasizes the students as much as the teacher. Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don't Cry) comes to a southern California high school bubbling over with naive optimism, but quickly discovers that her unruly classroom isn't easily won over by her good intentions. After a few floundering attempts to connect with her students, Gruwell gives them the assignment of keeping journals about their own lives--an assignment that the class bites into with relish, which eventually bonds them together and pushes racial rivalries aside. This plotline has been made before, sometimes well, sometimes poorly; Freedom Writers, by drawing heavily from the published journals of the students--and thanks to a (mostly) unheroic script, direction that emphasizes individual characters over stereotypes, and rigorous performances from the whole cast--makes the story seem fresh and genuine. Variety reports that Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, the screenwriters behind last year’s Superman revival movie, have opted not to come back to write the sequel. A second new Superman movie is already in the works with Bryan Singer attached to direct his second installment. Brandon Routh is rumored to be returning for the new Superman movie, though his name is also in the mix to play Supes in the upcoming Justice League film. Currently, Warner Bros. is taking Superman pitches from other writers. I’m happy about this. Not only were Dougherty and Harris responsible for giving Superman a crappy son then putting him through a whole movie where he didn’t punch through a wall, but it took both of them to turn that crappy plot out. Have Woody Allen write the new Superman film for all I care. As long as Supes punches through a wall, I’ll go see it.
