  • Pilots stabbed in attack aboard New Zealand plane
WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A woman passenger on a New Zealand commuter plane has been charged with hijacking after she allegedly stabbed both pilots and threatened to blow up the 19-seat aircraft, police said on Friday. The pilots were attacked about 20 minutes into the Air New Zealand flight between the South Island centres of Blenheim and Christchurch by a woman armed with a knife who demanded to be flown to Australia, police said in a statement. Neither pilot was seriously hurt and they were able to land the plane safely. Their assailant tried to tamper with the controls of the plane as it was coming in to land at Christchurch and was only disarmed when the plane hit turbulence, police said. Police with dogs boarded the plane and arrested a 33-year-old woman, who is originally from Somalia. She was later charged with hijacking and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was due to appear in court in Christchurch on Saturday. The plane was left on the runway while
  • Pilot stabbed in attack on New Zealand plane
WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A woman passenger on a New Zealand commuter plane stabbed a pilot and threatened to blow up the 19-seat aircraft, New Zealand Press Association reported on Friday. The woman stabbed one of the two pilots and attempted to take control of the small Jetstream plane as it flew to Christchurch from the small town of Blenheim on New Zealand's South Island, NZPA said, citing local police. A pilot sustained minor wounds, but none of the seven passengers on board was hurt. The woman was restrained. Christchurch airport, the country's second biggest international gateway, was closed for more than two hours as armed police, army bomb squad and emergency services surrounded the plane, which was parked in a remote part of the airport. "I saw a dog go in, the passengers came out in a rush, then the woman came out, was bundled to ground and searched by police and taken away," Wayne Johnstone, a passenger on another plane was reported as saying by local Web sit

  • Finch wins New Zealand Open
Richard Finch, the overnight leader at 14-under had a solid even par final round, while his chasers failed to fire a shot.As he did all week, Finch relyied on a simplistic mix of hitting the right area off the tee, finding the green and rolling the odd putt in.Even a crowd disturbance during his tee shot on the first couldn't perturb him, recovering to make birdie when his chip shot hit a sprinkler head and bounced to within five feet of the hole.Aussie Steven Bowditch was expected to mount a serious challenge from 11-under overnight, but three early bogies meant he was out of contention leaving Finch to take the New Zealand Open.

  • Brit man’s wife too fat to join him in New Zealand!
A British emigrant to New Zealand was reportedly told by officials that his wife was too fat to join him.   Richie Trezise moved to New Zealand in September after shedding two inches from his waist on a crash diet. He was thinking of abandoning the idea of emigrating if his wife was not allowed to come out by Christmas.   His wife, Rowan, has been rigorously trying to shed the pounds for months, so they can be reunited and live Down Under.   Richie is a submarine cable specialist, who has also served in the Army. Still his employer-backed skills visa was initially rejected by immigration officials when his body mass index, or BMI, was found to be 42, making him morbidly obese.   But his wife Rowan, who planned to emigrate with him, has failed to pass the obesity test.   “My doctor laughed at me. He said he'd never seen anything more ridiculous in his whole life. He said not every overweight person is unhealthy or unfit,” the Telegraph quoted him,

At today’s ceremony to mark the turning of the first sod at the Makara site west of Wellington, Meridian Chief Executive Dr Keith Turner said the West Wind site had a wind resource the envy of the rest of the world. “We are absolutely delighted to be able to make a start on building this wind farm which I believe will become a new symbol for Wellington,” Dr Turner said. • Belated Birthday Wish to Janet Frame, A New Zealand Author
Celebrating the Birthday of Janet FrameAugust 28, 1924 – January 29, 2004Poet, Novelist – New ZealandOne of the exciting benefits about film is that you encounter people you may never otherwise encounter. I rented a film, An Angel at My Table, by director Jane Campion. You may recognize Jane’s name as the director of The Piano starring Holly Hunter and Sam Neill. As a film, An Angel at My Table was unusual. It isn't a film that I see would have wide appeal, nor would I recommend it universally but there are people who would find it very interesting. The characters are strongly portrayed but the pace is a little slow. It did; however, give me an introduction to a woman in history of whom I hadn't yet encountered. It features the life of Janet Frame, a poet and novelist from New Zealand. Janet grew up with three sisters and a brother but it seems that she was a very shy person and had a lot of trouble connecting with people. Her social struggles led to her admitting herself i

  • Simpsons Gift Donut to Springfield New Zealand
Springfield is a tiny town in the South Island, which is set to receive a massive iced Donut. The Donut is part of a PR campaign to promote the new Simpsons Movie. It is great that this tiny town with a population of 300 can now join the big league of other towns with big icons such as Paeroa, which has the giant L&P bottle, Taupo has a giant trout, and Ohakune has the massive carrot. Springfield, also known as the ‘Gateway to the Alps’ is a tiny rural township, nestled amongst stunning alpine peaks. The town has a strong identity as a railway settlement, with the local railway dating back to the 1880’s. Whilst farming is predominant these days, the TranzAlpine train stops at Springfield daily, giving visitors the chance to stop in at the restored train station, which houses the Springfield Information Bureau, a cafe, and shop selling local crafts.Springfield is the closest town to a choice of five of Canterbury’s popular ski fields. Springfield also has a highly recommend
  • Barbarians vs. New Zealand All Blacks (1973) at Cardiff Arms Park
There are a lot of things to note about this video. I didn't realize the greatest try was scored so early on in this match (within the first 5 minutes). I also like some of the period features of rugby 34 years ago: the immediate engagement at the scrums; the condensed, unlifting lineouts with wingers throwing in (with a particularly odd overarm bowling style from the Kiwi no. 14 B. G. Williams); the under-rehearsed Haka (hardly as fearsome as it is today); the generally effeminate, schoolmasterish look of most of the players and the referee (these are amateur athletes); the heavy ball; the no longer practised straight-on toe-poke place-kicking technique of the Kiwi full-back, J. F. Karam; the deliberate pendulum passing style; the good sportsmanship. Some of the rules have changed since then: technical offences at the scrum, such as a squint feed or foot up, are now only a free-kick offence, rather than a penalty, as it was in the 1970s. I was impressed by the utter dependability of
