0 seconds delay when deleting files in Explorer/Total Commander
2006-07-17 19:29:00
When you try to delete a file or directory in Windows Explorer (or Total Commander) that is in use by another program, it takes a long time before an error message tells you that the file cannot be removed. With a little bit of research I've found that this happens because there is a 5 seconds delay in deleting the files, so a solution would be to make that delay 0 seconds by patching the shell32.dll. The process is a little complicated so if you do not really understand something is better not to try it. This was tested on Windows XP and I recommend doing a backup before trying it. Here are the steps:First of all you need to make sure that there is only one shell32.dll file. Thus, go to C:\\Windows\system32\dllcache (assuming C is your system partition) and rename shell32.dll (if it exists) to shell32.dll.bakNow you will need a hex editor to patch the shell32.dll file. I used Tiny Hexer (which is free) so you can download and install it.Next you need to copy shell32.dll from C:\\Windo ...

Google indexing .exe files - part 2
2006-07-13 18:53:00
Well in my original blog post (Google indexing executable files) I omitted to put a proof on how I got to see exe files indexed in Google. Thing is that I'm subscribed to Google Alerts (a service from Google that allows you to receive email notifications when relevant Google results from web + news are found based on a query or topic) for the term Backup4all. So everytime Google finds it in the web results or news, it send an email. This is how I received the following email alert, saying that the mentioned website contained the search term Backup4all:As you can see it is an executable file hosted on a crack site. Later I downloaded that file and installed it on a "doomed" computer (as it turned out the file contained some Chinese trojans). Now, as others have mentioned this shouldn't be a risk for people that know what they're doing, but let's not forget that there are others not so computer literate that would trust anything coming from Google (of course there is the possibility that ...

Preview a TinyURL
2006-07-03 10:44:00
TinyURL.com is a website that allows you to convert a long url to a tiny one that will not break in email postings and never expire. However, I don't trust clicking on these types of links, as you don't know everytime what's "hidden" (affiliate/tracking links for instance). But I've seen that they've introduced a new feature that allows you to preview the link before visiting it. This is a great improvement and you can turn this feature on by visiting http://tinyurl.com/preview.php and clicking on Click here to enable previews (make sure you allow cookies). After that, each time you'll click on a tinyurl link you'll be directed first to a preview page, like the one you see below: ...

Send voice email messages for free
2006-06-30 21:42:00
It took me a while to find a cool freebie that would allow sending voice email messages, but finally I got it. It's called Voice Mail Compressor and is produced by Lagolento.Couple of things I like especially about it: - creates the voicemails in wav or mp3 format (you can compress these with different codecs to reduce a lot the size of the voicemail) - example, a voicemail of 51 seconds had 100Kb - you can send the voicemail automatically with your pop3 email client or you can save the voice message on your hard drive (highly visible Send and Save buttons); - is compatible with the most used e-mail clients (MS Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, Eudora, ...). - best part is that Voice Mail Compressor is freeware, no ads, no limitations, no adware, no spyware etc.... Only a small mention in the email that is sent about the program that created the voicemail. - no bloataware, only a 1MB installer file.Give it a try, especially if you're not too much into typing. Also, two mor ...

Why outsourcing customer support is a bad idea
2006-06-28 20:34:00
Outsourcing helps big companies spare a lot of money. And I understand that, it's logical to do everything you can to cut down costs. I understand it when it comes to software development, graphic design, SEO and other areas where the people you're outsourcing to don't interact directly with your customers. But I blame a decision like outsourcing customer support. Why? Well I'll give an example instead of an explanation. I've contacted recently 1and1 asking this:I have a newsletter script installed (not from 1and1) that I use it to send ezines to my customers. If the email bounces I've seen that it goes to cgi-mailer-bounces-...@srs.perfora.net. Is there a way to change this bounce-back email address to one that I can have control over? Thank you.And the answer I got:Dear ..., (Customer ID: ...)Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, if the other person hit on reply and if the email got bounce back then the person who hit reply will receive the bounce back email and there's ...

Google indexing executable files
2006-06-23 19:18:00
I was searching for a Firefox installation file when I've seen on Google that the setup was indexed and if you click on the Google result the download will start automatically. See this, search for "Signature: 00004550" and you'll see about 200,000 results of executable files being indexed. This is possible because a link to a normal website was redirected automatically to an executable file (probably from apache), as you can see for skype where the page www.skype.com/go/getskype appears in the first position and if you click Skype will start downloading automatically. You also have the choice of clicking the View as HTML link and just as with other formats, the file information is displayed.Anyway, this must be a bug. I mean what use is from having the executable files indexed, as in the View as HTML section there is no relevant information. Plus this is a security risk, even a high one. Because sites full of spyware might use this redirect bug to have spyware executables indexed and ...

Embedding fonts in MS PowerPoint
2006-06-21 19:40:00
You've worked a week for an important PowerPoint, and now you have to present it in front of your possible client. However, you didn't take into account one minor thing, that you've created the PowerPoint on your desktop computer and you're presenting it from your laptop. You open it and see that all the titles are outside of the careful selected boxes, all the paragraphs are now larger and with a strange font. Your feet are getting softer, you start seeing little stars - you're scre**d. Something similar almost happened to me, what's best is that I've tested this before actually going live with the presentation. See, if you're not using a universal font that's by default installed with Windows, you have to embed it into the PowerPoint so that you will not have surprises in displaying the text. It's simple to do this, before saving the PowerPoint go to File and click on Save As. Now on the top right hand corner click on Tools and after on Save Options.Yeah, a little bit tricky ...

Idiomatic Expressions in English
2006-02-25 20:07:00
A friend sent me a couple of idiomatic expressions in English, and given the fact that English is not my native language (not a big secret there) these come in hand very useful and thought of sharing them (I know they are not fun as the one in the image below, but are wiser). If you have a website you can use them to display a random idiomatic expression on your website, with the respective explanation. I won't write a tutorial in here about adding that kind of code to your website, but there are a lot of scripts and programs that you can use (for free) to do that. Just pay HotScripts a visit and follow the instructions. Here is the list of idiomatic expressions: Never count your chickens before they are hatched. Meaning: Don’t spend money that you haven’t earned yet. Don’t cry over spilled milk. Meaning: What is done is done. Just make the best of a bad situation, and get on with your life. Never look a gift-horse in the mouth. Meaning: If someone gives you a gift, you are behavi ...

Outlook Express signature with pictures
2006-02-18 17:57:00
Ever wanted to have your logo and a slogan in your signature? You can do that easy with Microsoft Outlook, but it's a little more to do if you want to use one in Outlook Express. I thought of writing a tutorial on how to have a HTML signature in Outlook Express (including pictures).1. This is a tutorial on how to add a signature that also has an image in it. In this example I included an image that was 68 in width and 62 in height. If you know what image you'll use, just see its properties for the dimensions, because we need those. Once you have that image you need to name it signature.gif (or .jpeg, .jpg, leave the extension intact, change only its name). Now, we need to create an HTML file, that we'll call signature.html. The code below shows you how to write it:<img width=68 height=62 src="signature.jpg"><br><p><span>Your name</span><br><span>Your Company</span><br><em><span>Your Slogan</span></em></ ...

Google Microsoft search
2005-12-06 17:47:00
Google Microsoft Search is one of the topic specific searches that Google offers. I'm not sure when Google added these topic specific searches because I just discovered them (yes there are more) when using the Advanced Preferences from Google. The first of them is Google Microsoft Search. As the name suggests, what it allows you to do is to search Microsoft-related sites using Google. I think it is a normal google search but with some filters added (like +microsoft -linux -apple), given the fact that if you do a search using it for -microsoft you get 0 results, while a similar search on Google returns about 9 billion results. If you're asking why does Google do that, well here there is place for interpretation. Of course that this helps you find results only in websites that are related to Microsoft and its product/services. But there is also the optimization issue, search for Microsoft on Google and see who's on the second page (and going up). Of course this is a supposition ;).Anothe ...

BlogSearch Google Service
2005-11-12 18:50:00
BlogSearch is a new service from Google (beta yet). As the name suggests it searches through blogs. It's the same simple Google interface (almost) but with a Find blogs on your favorite topics slogan (I really think they could have picked a better one).On their frequently asked questions section there are some interesting details, like how you can submit your blog to Google BlogSearch if it just had been lauched. Read this selection or the whole Google Blog Search Help if you want:What is Blog Search?Blog Search is Google search technology focused on blogs. Google is a strong believer in the self-publishing phenomenon represented by blogging, and we hope Blog Search will help our users to explore the blogging universe more effectively, and perhaps inspire many to join the revolution themselves.
