The Wayne Fontes Experience
The Wayne Fontes Experience is a weblog featuring my uninformed, snarky, and completely biased blathering on Detroit sports. You may see the occasional pop culture rant and some lame attempts at humor, but mostly sports. I do ask readers to remember one thing..."In Detroit, you're with us, or we hate you."

It's a ballgame! Really!: 3rd quarter Lions - Cowboys thoughts
2007-12-09 21:23:00
As we come back from halftime, Aikman and Buck are still trying to figure out what happened to FOX's beloved Cowboys. Aikman says to expect a Dallas explosion of points. For some reason, mainly being that the Lions suck, I believe him.The Lions will receive the 2nd half kick. Cason, has a GREAT (For him) return as the Lions will start at their 36.The Lions pick up from where they left off, with Jones getting 7 on 1st down. He gets 2 more on 2nd down, 3rd an 1. COME ON! GET THE 1ST DOWN!So much for that drive. Martz calls a deep pass? Thus Kitna misses McHugh about 20 yards downfield. That was an odd fucking call. That's the Martz we know and hate. They're running the fuck out of the ball, and he pulls a low percentage pass out of his ass.Nick Harris continues his great season, as he NAILS the coffin corner kick! 'Boys start at their 3 yard line!D needs to come up BIG! They stuff Jones on 1st down for a 2 yard gain. OK, not bad. But Bryant is shaken up on the play. TV time out.2nd and 8 ...

It's not a slaughter, Who knew?: 2nd quarter Lions - Cowboys thoughts
2007-12-09 20:44:00
As we come back from commercial, we see Casey FitzSimmons being helped off the field, not putting any pressure on one leg. Wonderful. We see Lions special teams coach Stan Kwan getting REAMED by Marinelli on the sidelines. That's it Sarge, kick his ass all the way to Allen Park! Kwan's teams have been anything but special this season.Dallas starts at the Lions 40. A short pass gets 4. On 2nd down, Romo dumps it off to Barber...He's hit hard at the 30...BALL! Shit, Dallas recovers. 1st down at the Lions 28.Barber runs over several Lions as he gets 8 on 1st down. The 'Boys are moving, now in the red zone.Barber is stuffed for no gain, leaving a 3rd and 1. NEED FUCKING STOP!SHITSHITSHIT! Barber takes a toss right, finds the corner, and is untouched on a 20 yard TD run. That's the Lions I expected to see today... After the kick, it's 10-7, Lions still lead. The Cowboys looked like a machine on that drive. I still don't see the Lions winning this game, despite their fast start.Cason with a ...

Like lambs to a slaughter: 1st quarter Lions - Cowboys thoughts
2007-12-09 18:40:00
Shockingly, only because the Lions are involved, and it's not Thanksgiving, we join FOX A-listers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman from fabulous Ford Field in downtown Detroit. The Lions are 6-6, and sinking like the Titanic with a cargo of nothing but anvils, while the 'Boys are cruising along at 11-1. I expect them to be 12-1 in about 3 hours.Obviously, FOX sent their A-listers to cover the Cowboys, the marquee team in the NFC, and I expect the broadcast to reflect that. It's gonna be a long, long day, folks... I could spew the usual inanities, "On any given Sunday," and "They don't play the game on paper," but would you believe them? I'd just be deluding myself. but there's a game ot play, and I'm going to blog the Hell out of it, even if it's a disaster in the making.I'm warning you know, expect plenty of NSFW profanities...The Lions will kick, and the 'Boys will start on the 25.We see the inactives for the Leo's, Boss Baily has the flu, Roy Williams has the knee injury we saw happen las ...

Answering the Detroit Tigers' "Burning questions" - What to do with Brandon Inge edition
2007-12-08 23:45:00
The Detroit Tigers still have their fair share of roster decisions to make, thanks to a sudden infusion of elite talent, namely Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. Where that leaves a Detroit Tiger mainstay, Brandon Inge, is the focus of this round of Lynn Henning's burning questions.Topics covered include the future of Inge, why the Tigers may have soured on him, the Tigers status as an elite team, along with the MSM's reaction to that status, and how the Tigers were better off not following MLB guidelines in building their team.Let's talk Inge! Never thought I'd be writing that, but these are strange times for Tigers fans...Burning questions after the Tigers threatened to turn the winter meetings into the winter beatingsQ: Of all the mesmerizing events that took place ahead of Detroit's trade for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, what has been most mystifying in the hours and days since?Henning: The instant disappearance of Brandon Inge from the Tigers' vocabulary. The Mlive comment of the day
2007-12-08 06:30:00
The forumites and commenters at Mlive.com are known for their slavish hero worship of Lions beat writer Killer Kowalski, and their general sense of loopiness and fanaticism. In other words, it's highly entertaining clusterfuck.Much as Deadspin has been making hay, and skewering the 4 letter, with their "ESPN's Featured Comment Of The Day" postings, I'd like to do the same with material that's ripe for the picking at Mlive. As theft is the sincerest form of flattery, and I'm always looking for new posting ideas, I'm thinking of starting a new feature at TWFE called..."The Mlive comment of the day." The comment picked may be lucid, it may be insightful, it may be funny, it may not make any sense, it may offend, it may be fucking insane. That's part of the fun... We'll see how it goes, and if I, and you readers, enjoy it, it'll go into regular TWFE rotation.Today's entry is from the Killer's article telling us why he's picking the Cowboys to win on Sunday. The featured commenter is lions ...

Michigan meltdown: Does anybody want to coach the Wolverines?
2007-12-08 05:19:00
I know that I've been posting quite often about the Michigan coaching search. I'm sorry, but I can't help myself. I'm watching a slow motion train wreck. It's horrifying, you should be taking cover, yet you can't turn away. The so-called nationwide coaching search has taken on the appearance of total farce. With Greg Schiano turning down he maize and blue, the fanbase and alumni are now in a frenzied state of panic, and in near revolt. The shit is beginning to publicly hit the fan. Tonight in the A2 News are the accusations of former players that Lloyd Carr is responsible for undercutting Les Miles' chances for the Michigan job.(Bill) Dufek and another former teammate, Mike Leoni, said they believe Carr sabotaged the pursuit of Miles because of personal animosity, or "petty jealousies," as Dufek said. At his retirement press conference in mid-November, Carr emphasized that his role in the search process would be strictly defined by Martin and added, "I'm not here wanting to name the coach ...

2007-12-07 16:42:00
I go to bed around 2 AM, and Rutgers' Greg Schiano is the far and away favorite to take the Michigan job. It was thisclose to being a done deal.I'm up at 9, sit down at the PC around 9:30 thinking all is well, and I see this?Rutgers coach Greg Schiano is no longer a candidate to become Michigan’s next football coach.Schiano, a 41-year-old New Jersey native, had an interview with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin in New York on Wednesday but has withdrawn from further consideration, according to Michigan people close to the situation.What. The. Fuck? Schiano has turned down both the U and now Michigan? That's either extremely noble, or extremely stupid. I'm leaning towards stupid.Even more disturbing is the following news. This puts Michigan’s search process, publicly at least, with no prominent high-profile candidates.Right now the ONLY names associated with the Wolverines job is Ron English, Mike DeBord, and Brady fucking Hoke? Jesus. No wonder the fans and alumni are on the v ...

The leader in the Michigan coaching race: Greg Schiano
2007-12-07 07:25:00
The Wolverines have had their radio silence broken, as word has come out of New Jersey tonight that Rutgers' head coach Greg Schiano has interviewed for the Michigan job.Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano met with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin "for quite a while" to discuss the Big Ten school's coaching vacancy during the annual College Football Hall of Fame Banquet in New York City on Tuesday, according to a person who speaks regularly with Schiano.Though no official offer has been made, according to the person, one could be forthcoming. Finally, someone you can consider as a LEGIT candidate. Not a pipe dream like an Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops, not just a courtesy interview that were the talks with twin clueless coordinators Mike DeBord and Ron English, and not an utter joke like Brady Hoke. For that matter, Schiano's not a "Michigan Man," ala the early favorite, Les Miles. That's a good thing for such an in-bred program. For an excellent profile of the Rutgers coach, read MGoBlog ...

This is by far the most depressing thing I've read today
2007-12-06 22:29:00
The Killer did his weekly answering of emails from the loons at the Mlive forums, and I read the following passage...Boo-urns: I know you get asked this every other day, but... if the Lions finish 6-10, any chance that Millen loses his job?Tom Kowalski: Not a chance.Damn you Millen! You God damn fucking porn 'stached franchise killing moron! I know that the porn 'stached GM wannabe was not going anywhere, and also know that was going to be Killer's answer.Thing is, knowing what the Killer says is absolutely true, and not a damn thing that happens is going to change that fact, makes it an even more depressing thought.About the only person in Detroit sports Millen could remotely match wits with is Michigan's Bill Martin. I'm just not sure which one of them should be insulted...

Above the Fold: Captain Billy is sailing Michigan straight into irrelevancy
2007-12-06 20:15:00
It's been utter Detroit Tigers hysteria in both the MSM and blogosphere over the past two days, for good reason. The Tigers pulled off a coup of immense proportions with their acquisition of Miggy and the D-Train, from a team standing on a Nashville street corner, with their pockets hanging out of their pants, claiming they're totally destitute, the Florida "Build us a stadium, or we'll field an AA team every season" Marlins, for every Detroit farmhand not named Rick Porcello. It was a monster stroke of genius for a GM that seems to come up with stokes of genius on an hourly basis, Dave Dombrowski.Unfortunately, they are having a stroke, with no genius involved, in Ann Arbor this week. A huge clusterfuck of immense proportions is occurring with the University of Michigan football coaching search.Dave Dombrowski knows what he wants, makes a plan, then implements said plan with decisiveness and speed. Michigan AD Bill Martin, on the other hand, in the middle of his school's most importa ...

What in the HELL was I thinking? The Chris Shelton edition
2007-12-06 06:02:00
Red Pop, Sloth, The Great Red-Headed Hope, the man who had one of the greatest Aprils in MLB history, Chris Shelton, is not longer a Tiger. Designated for assignment a couple of weeks ago, Shelton's days were numbered, and his number came up today.Mr. April will be traded to Texas for for career AAAA center fielder Freddy Guzman, who will help fill the minor league outfield holes left by the trades of Gorkys Hernandez and Cameron Maybin. I'm sure Guzman will be a fine center fielder...For the Toledo Mud Hens.Shelton once swung a bat as Thor swung his hammer.Too bad that swing had a huge hole in it...It seems like eons have passed since Shelton was the talk of baseball, with his insane 10 home run April 2006. In reality, only 18 months have passed since those heady days. How far the mighty have fallen. Starting at 1st base for a pennant contender in early 2006, to being given away for a career minor leaguer in late 2007.From above the fold, to the agate type. I sure didn't see that co ...

D-Train responds to the trade
2007-12-06 02:42:00
FYI Tigers fans...Player blog alert! It looks as if Curtis Granderson will have some blogging competition.Yardbarker was kind enough to point me to the new "Dontrelle Willis Blog," where he gives his thoughts about his trade to the Motor City. His feelings were definitely mixed as first, but he's warmed up to the idea of playing in Motown.Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing the D-Train perform. I'm expecting big things with the change of scenery, and his pitching for a MUCH better team.

Above the Fold - The trade that shook the baseball world, Detroit MSM edition
2007-12-05 20:43:00
I'm sure that I've ever seen the trained "Journalists" in total lockstep over a single issue before. That's changed as of 6:15 pm, December 5, 2007.It's unanimous, the local MSM loves the Tigers' brash boldness in trading for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. The Tiger love is overwhelming...The Little Fella, who has been unusually prolific as of late, is effusive in his praise...The Tigers' lineup -- with Cabrera, Renteria, Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield, Placido Polanco, Pudge Rodriguez, Jacque Jones and Curtis Granderson -- is shaping up to be a brick-smasher. And with Willis, Justin Verlander, Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson and recently re-signed Kenny Rogers, well, nothing shabby about that rotation."It's a feather in the cap of the farm systems that we could make this trade," Leyland said. "To me, the scouting director is the hero of the night."But that "boom" is the memory of it. Happy early Christmas, Tigers fans. How long until April? And a Happy New Year!Drew Sha ...

Above the Fold - The trade that shook the baseball world, Detroit blogosphere edition
2007-12-05 18:20:00
Has there ever been a crazier few hours for Tigers fans than yesterday afternoon? The news first broke that the Tigers were in trade talks with the Marlins around 12:30 in the afternoon. I, as did most of us, spent the rest of the day refreshing our browsers, and vigilantly listening for any news on the radio and TV.Around 5 PM, the MSM was telling us that the talks with Detroit were just a Marlins ploy to force the Angels hand in trade talks. The Tigers supposedly didn't have the ammunition to compete with the Angels offer. It wasn't going to happen, and hopes were deflated. The news was just too good to be true.If you felt an earth tremor at 6:15 last night, that was the jaws of baseball fans hitting the floor all around the country, as Peter Gammons announced on Sportscenter that the Tigers and Marlins had agreed in principal in a BLOCKBUSTER trade. Detroit acquired Miggy Cabrera and the D-Train, Dontrelle Willis, from Florida, in return for 5 prospects, including super prospect And ...

Knee-jerk TWFE thoughts about Cabrera and Willis for the Tigers' entire minor league system
2007-12-05 03:44:00
In tracking the reaction to the Cabrera - Willis deal, I haven't really said how I feel about this trade. Well...I LOVE IT!When you have the opportunity to trade for a 24 year old superstar, who can put up .320-30-125 in his sleep, and will only get better, along with a legit #2 or 3 starting pitcher, only 2 years removed from a 22 win season, and is only 25, in return for prospects? Blue chip prospects, but prospects all the same? You just got to make that deal. You just have to. Dave Dombrowski would have been negligent otherwise.I don't know how you can not like this trade. The Tigers had already totally committed to a "Win now" philosophy with the Renteria trade. They may have a 2 year window to make a serious run at winning the World Series. There is no "Tomorrow." With the Tigers, there is only today. And today, they elevated themselves to the level of New York and Boston, if not higher.Over the past 3 seasons, it's as if the tigers had awoke from a long slumber, realized that th ...

I'm updating this post as the night goes on, scroll down for the latest and greatest... Big AlAs I was in the middle of writing another post, I tuned in the 4 Letter, and I just heard the following...Peter Gammons, as of 6:15 on Sportscenter, says Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis will be Detroit Tigers. It's a done deal, save for crossing the T's, and dotting the I's. The Tigers trade Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, Mike Rabelo, and 3 more prospects to be named to the Marlins.WXYT in Detroit has confirmed the report as well.HOLY SHIT AND GOD DAMN, THE TIGERS ARE GOING ALL IN! The Tigers just traded for arguably the second best player in baseball, a young superstar! Let alone a #2-#3 starter!Win now, indeed.Jesus, I didn't see this coming even 6 hours ago... I'll have much more later as more details are known...Update 6:30 PM - The Freep's Jon Paul Morosi has confirmed the deal as well, but doesn't tell us much more...The Tigers have acquired third baseman Miguel Cabrera and left-han ...

Screamin' A. Smith and Chris McCosky have more than covering the NBA in common
2007-12-04 22:55:00
As seen on the usual suspects, Deadspin, Sports by Brooks, and Awful Announcing, there's more blogger bashing today.Just how worried are "Journalists" in the MSM over the blogosphere? Plenty. As part of an InsideSoCal interview, the blogosphere's favorite punching bag, the poster boy for all that is wrong with today's media, Screamin' A. Smith, is now bitching about bloggers..."Internet writers" have no right to reach a large audience. And when you look at the internet business, what’s dangerous about it is that people who are clearly unqualified get to disseminate their piece to the masses. I respect the journalism industry, and the fact of the matter is ...someone with no training should not be allowed to have any kind of format whatsoever to disseminate to the masses to the level which they can. They are not trained. Not experts. Can these MSM clowns be any more insecure?Jesus, get a damn grip. These so-called trained "Journalists" should stop worrying about the rise of the interne ...

Roy Williams and Kevin Jones have seen the light!
2007-12-04 21:24:00
At Mlive today, Killer Kowalski writes one of his occasional controversial opinion pieces about the Lions. He claims there's a storm brewing that will hit the Lions next season, in regard to the long term status of pro bowl wide out Roy Williams, and number one running back Kevin Jones...Williams and Jones, who were both first-round draft picks in 2004, will become unrestricted free agents after next season and sources close to the players say they've had enough and want out.My first thought after reading the Killer's article?DUH!Who wouldn't want to bail on this sinking ship? If they actually wanted to stay, I'd question their sanity. My second thought?Sounds like a smart plan to me. Who could blame them for wanting to leave that dysfunctional organization in their rear view? I'll wish them the best when they join their new teams. With the word that two conerstone Lions are unhappy, all I have is questions regarding the Lions, but no answers. Is this going to be the future of the Lions, ...

Above the Fold - Talking Tigers, winter meetings style
2007-12-04 18:30:00
When MLB's winter meetings roll around every December, it gives the hot stove league a shot of steroids. With all the GM's in one place for the week, it's a dream scenario for rumormongering. The Tigers, having done of of their business before the winter meetings, may be doing more window shopping than anything else. But with their off season mantra of win now, another trade or free agent signing is not out of the question.Much as there was "The Summer of George," this has been "The Winter of Jon Paul Morosi." The Freep's Tiger beat writer has been given the opportunity to shine by his fishwrap, and he has responded by constantly scooping the opposition at the News and Mlive. This morning is no different...The Tigers are close to acquiring Denny Bautista from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Jose Capellan, in a trade of hard-throwing right-handed relievers, according to two industry officials. Both pitchers have had good numbers while pitching in the Dominican Winter League this off ...

Answering the Detroit Lions' NFL week 13 "Burning questions"
2007-12-04 03:15:00
It's Monday, which means with another Lions loss, brings another round of Mike O'Hara's burning questions! There's plenty to discuss this week after the latest road loss debacle.Topics include detailing, unit by unit, the team's issues, their chances of making a playoff run, how much is Marinelli to blame, Jon Kitna's hinting at locker room disharmony, and what happens next week against the NFC's best team, the Cowboys.Let's get the nasty cornbread and Kool-aid taste out of our mouth, and answer some questions!Burning questions from the Lions' 42-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome on Sunday:Q: What's wrong with the Lions? They've lost four straight games and are skidding out of playoff contention.O'Hara: The answer might be the worst one imaginable. There might not be anything wrong with them. The way they are playing now, they weren't as good as everyone thought when they were at 6-2, but they might be as bad as they've been in the losing streak.Big Al: What's wrong? W ...

Is Lloyd Carr the puppetmaster?
2007-12-03 20:10:00
After the weekend long fiasco with Les Miles, those involved with the Michigan coaching search are taking a beating on all sides. Deservedly so, as Michigan was played by LSU like a drum. But was it all on Miles? Who leaked the story to Kirk Herbstreit? Did the leak come from Michigan? Someone close to miles? WHO?Let me put my tin foil conspiracy theorist hat on.I have to ask, with Miles out of the running (And soon to be a very rich man), is Lloyd Carr now heavily influencing the coaching search? Could he be pulling strings behind the scenes, using his power to direct the coaching search toward coaches he approves?Conspiracy theorists say all signs point to Lloyd Carr being "The Puppetmaster." Why do I ask? Because the only 2 official interviews to this point have been with Carr's coordinators, Mike "Off-tackle left" Debord, and Ron "Mobile QB's confuse me" English. Neither one of these guys should be seriously considered to replace Carr. English isn't ready to take over at a footba ...

Above the Fold - The Lions cornbread has left an awful aftertaste
2007-12-03 17:57:00
The Detroit Lions were crushed by the Minnesota Vikings, 42-10. The game was over by halftime. The score very easily could have been much worse, if the Vikings didn't let off in the 3rd quarter.Words can't truly describe the carnage. Awful. Horrific. Embarrassing. Ugly. It was the sort of defeat that gets people fired. Especially after a 6-2 start. Not that heads will roll, as that just doesn't happen with William Clay Ford. If anything, the senile old curmudgeon will think this season is an improvement, and contract extensions will be granted to all.The Book, Pat Caputo, in today's Oakland Press, thinks that Rod Marinelli is heading down the same road as every other Lions head coach, irrelevancy.During this losing streak, though, the Lions have been up to their old tricks. And it's not just the mistakes, but it's the desire. They didn't show much of it Sunday. The Vikings ran over them like a Mack Truck in a collision with a Tonka Toy. The Lions didn't put up much resistance. Marinell ...

Another road game debacle: Final thoughts on Lions - Vikings
2007-12-03 03:40:00
There's not much to say about the Lions loss to the Vikings, but I'm going to try. Not this year: 4th quarter Lions - Vikings thoughts1. Two of the biggest names going into the 2007 NFL draft were Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson. The Lions took Johnson without a second thought, while the Vikings were thrilled to have Peterson drop to them.Their seasons have since gone in different directions, with Johnson struggling with a nagging back injury, learning Mike Martz's offense, and with actually catching the ball. Peterson, on the other hand, is the unanimous NFL rookie of the year, and may already be the best running back in football. Playoffs? Not this year: 4th quarter Lions - Vikings thoughts
2007-12-02 22:15:00
As we start the 4th quarter, we see the wild card race standings. Why bother, it's all a pipe dream for Lions fans.Kitna finds Furrey for 7. Brandstatter says, "The Lions have all 3 time outs!" Huh? So what?Bad snap on the shotgun, Kitna throws it away, but takes another big hit. 3rd and 3 from the Vikings 46.Calvin Johnson DROPS a slant that hit him in stride. It his him right in the hands. Lions suckitude is contagious. 4th and 3. Lions are going for it...CJ holds on to the ball this time, the completion goes for 17 at the Vikings 28.Kitna is back to pass...SACK! Ball is loose, Vikes recover. Whoop-de-fucking-do.!But it's called an incomplete pass. I don't know about that...And here comes the red flag from Childress on the Vikes sideline. Expect another 10 minute delay. It was ruled a fumble, but the Vikings don't get the ball? Huh? It must be due to the whistle blowing. No one has a clue on either the radio or TV as to why. An exercise in futility: 3rd quarter Lions - Vikings thoughts
2007-12-02 21:28:00
The FOX doofs are deservedly dissing the Lions during halftime, wondering why in the HELL they picked the Lions to win. Good question.Jimmie Johnson: "I'm never picking the Lions again!"We Lions fans learned that lesson LONG ago, Mr. Hair Helmet.Stockton tells us the Vikes set a team record with 35 1st half points. Fuck me real hard. I deserve it for rooting for this joke of team. The Vikings will start at their 34, thanks to the Lions missing a tackle on the 20. Just wave the God damn white flag.4 rushing yard for the Lions? Can we fire someone, anyone? Martz? Marinelli? Millen? Throw us a bone! DO SOMETHING!I can hear Marinelli now... Jackson hits Allison on a 15 yard out, breaks an arm tackle, and he's all the way to the Lions 22! Fuck.Peterson is piled up on 1st down, getting 2. Then it's a dump off to Taylor that gets 7. The Vikes are making it look damn easy. Jackson has all kinds of time, while the running game is, for the most part, punishing, the Lions defense. It's been a very uninspiring Lions performance to this point.3rd and1 from the Detroit 12. The up man, Richardson, gets the 1st down up the gut at the 11.The Vikes are called for delay of game, making it 1st and 15. The Lions have to win: 1st quarter Lions - Vikings thoughts
2007-12-02 19:39:00
