The Wayne Fontes Experience
The Wayne Fontes Experience is a weblog featuring my uninformed, snarky, and completely biased blathering on Detroit sports. You may see the occasional pop culture rant and some lame attempts at humor, but mostly sports. I do ask readers to remember one thing..."In Detroit, you're with us, or we hate you."

Answering the Detroit Tigers' "Burning questions," volume 15
2007-10-16 20:55:00
It's been over 2 weeks since the end of the Detroit Tigers' season. All has been quiet on the Tigers front, other than Pudge Rodriguez having his option picked up.As nothing much will happen till after the World Series ends (At the rate things are going, in a few more years, it'll be December by the time MLB ends their season), the Detroit News' Lynn Henning has graciously posted a round of burning questions to tide us over till the hot stove league can begin in earnest.Today's topics include speculation as to who will be Pudge's heir apparent, what we can expect from Gary Sheffield in 2008, and when Cameron Maybin and Gorkys Hernandez could join Curtis Granderson in the Comerica Park outfield.Burning questions as the Tigers look, enviously, at a Cleveland Indians team locked in a superb playoff series with the Red Sox.Q: What are the chances the Tigers will have any better luck during the next year finding a catcher now that Pudge Rodriguez's option has been picked up?Henning: The Tig ...

Michigan fans with cable just can't win for losing
2007-10-16 01:18:00
Being hostage to one of the cable companies (In my case, Charter, who's ineptitude I've railed about in the past) that refuse to carry the Big 10 Network, I've seen very little of the Michigan Wolverines this fall. Now that we're deep into the Big 10 football season, I was anticipating being able to see the Wolverines on a regular basis. This coming Saturday night, for example, the maize and blue are part of the ESPN on ABC / ESPN2 prime time clusterfuck on ABC.Whatever, at least I'll be able to watch the important Michigan - Illinois game. All is finally as it should be, with the Wolverines not being televised on the Mickey Mouse Big 10 Network. Then I see the following blurb about the scheduling of 10/27 Michigan - Minnesota game. The Big Ten office announced the time and television for the Oct. 27 Minnesota-Michigan matchup on Monday, and the Wolverines will be playing another late-afternoon game at Michigan Stadium. The game will start at 3:30 p.m., the fourth such start in seven home ...

Remember my trade demand? I didn't really mean it...
2007-10-15 19:58:00
Tatum Bell on Friday: Play me or trade me, DAMMIT!Tatum Bell today:Never mind...In his denials, Bell is using that hoary old stand by, "The media blew it up.""But it wasn’t really just demanding a trade or nothing like that. The media blew it up." That's about as believable an excuse as "The dog ate my homework." Despite the lame excuse, Bell continued to deny, deny, deny..."It wasn’t no talks of me getting traded."Uh...What? Talk about mangling the English language. Considering that a double negative resolves to a positive, Bell is actually confirming that there were trade talks, right?Bell's trade "Demand" was all a tempest in a teapot, anyway. He was going nowhere, both literally, as the Lions weren't about to trade Bell, as they are lacking depth at running back, and metaphorically, as even the thought of Bell being able to gain rushing yards behind the Lions offensive line, or in Mike Martz's pass insane scheme, is laughable.I guess you're stuck in the D till January, Tatum. ...

Jalen Rose had a billboard erected on the Lodge freeway honoring the the state of Michigan's most famous, and infamous, college team, the Michigan Wolverines' Fab 5 .As you can see, the word Rose uses to describe that era is "Timeless."Personally, a few other words come to mind when thinking about the Fab 5.Time outNever won a titleMitch Albom fictionEd MartinNumbers runningCakesCakes containing moneyLots and lots of moneyExplorer roll overIRSFBIRefusing to talkLawyering upSelf imposed sanctionsNCAA sanctionsHistory erasedBrian EllerbeeTommy AmakerNITPerennial 2nd division teamLaughingstock

My Michigan - Purdue prediction
2007-10-13 17:42:00
The Big 10 Network: Ruining the college football season for Big 10 fans nationwideAs the Big 10 Network and the cable cartel are still in a full bore pissing match, one where the only loser is Big 10 fans, I'm stuck listening to the Wolverines over the radio AGAIN. Which means 4 hours of the über-homer radio play-by-play team of Frank "I'm too big to talk sports on my talk show that no one listens to" Beckmann and Jim "When I played for Bo" Brandstatter. Thus, my prediction for today's game is...That I'll be in a great deal of pain by halftime, as I'll be ready to plunge a pair of icepicks into my ears after suffering through 2 quarters of Beckmann and Brandstatter blathering on and on about how the refs jobbed Michigan. This has been the worst college football season in memory, thanks to the total cluelessness of the Big 10, and their fiasco of a network. Thank you so much for fucking up my fall.

Tatum Bell requests a trade. The Lions say he's valued...As a Kevin Jones insurance policy
2007-10-13 06:48:00
The oh so on the ball Detroit fish wrap beat writers reported late Friday afternoon that Lions tailback Tatum Bell has requested a trade. Considering the NFL trade "Deadline" (It's hard to call it a true deadline when midseason NFL trades happen about as often as Lions' OT George Foster remembers the snap count) is this Tuesday, I seriously doubt we'll see Bell move on.Factor in that Kevin Jones has never stayed healthy for an entire season, and TJ Duckett has all but disappeared after his injury, the Lions aren't about to do anything with Bell other than give him the ball 5-10 times a game, and watch him put the ball on the ground at least every 5th carry.Marinelli to Bell: I said "Pound the rock," not "Drop the rock!"I'm guessing when Bell's agent approached Matt Millen with the trade request, Millen shrugged his shoulders, and said, "Tough shit, sherlock. I traded an pro bowl cornerback for a fumble prone tailback, and an O-tackle who thinks the snap count is not set in stone, but ...

The Detroit Lions as seen through the music of The Who
2007-10-12 23:25:00
As I was scrolling through my collection of songs from The Who while writing my previous post, I had a sudden epiphany. While reading the titles of The Who's songs, it struck me that they had to be fans of the Detroit Lions. I was amazed how many song titles could so closely relate to the frustrating experience that is to be one of the sad lot known as Lions fans.So much as I did with the Detroit Tigers bullpen this past summer, let's take a look at the NFL team we love to hate, as seen through the songs of an iconic rock band, The Who...My Generation - Is what your grandfather will answer if asked when the Lions were last legitimate NFL title contenders.Substitute - Wayne Fontes' guiding principle in dealing with his quarterbacks and coordinators. The Kids are Alright - What Fontes would tell William Clay Ford about the team after every season, buying himself another year as Lions head coach.A Legal Matter - How the Detroit Lions handled Barry Sanders' retirement. The Real Me - What Jo ...

The MLB playoffs have been fine. But the BS going on between innings is something else altogether....
2007-10-12 20:36:00
Commercials bother me. Commercials bastardizing the music of my youth bothers me even more. The latest example being the Honda commercial that has been run often during the MLB playoffs, using one of The Who's best, if not the best, songs, "I Can See for Miles."The kids were once alright. The two left are now just rich old capitalists. That Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey are making big bucks licensing their songs to anyone who gives them a briefcase full of 50's and 100's doesn't bother me all that much, as it's their music to do what they wish. It's how the songs are being used totally out of context that gets me.Does Honda, or their advertising agency, actually know the lyrics to "I Can See for Miles?" Here's a sample of the lyrics...Well, here's a poke at youYou're gonna choke on it tooYou're gonna lose that smileBecause all the whileI can see for miles and milesNot exactly the uplifting tune about a grand future that Honda makes it out to be, is it? Barry Sanders was overrated?
2007-10-11 20:31:00
The 4 letter network, in a desperate cry to attract attention to Sal Paolantonio's silly book, ran an excerpt from said book claiming that Barry Sanders was, get this, overrated? The argument he uses is that Sanders didn't put up numbers in the post season, and never won a title. If you go by Paolantonio's argument, Timmy Smith must be a better back than Barry, as he had one of the best post season performances ever by a back in Super Bowl XXII, while Sanders' playoff numbers were pedestrian, at best. You could say that the same goes for the great Walter Payton, as his playoff numbers aren't anything to brag about either. In the 1985 Super Bowl, William "The Refrigerator" Perry had a bigger impact on the result than Payton. So Payton must be overrated too, correct?I'm aware that I'm stretching things a bit, and being facetious. But it shows how you can twist the truth in order to make your reasoning look credible, doing what I like to call "Rob Parkering" your argument.Paolantonio uses ...

The ESPN ombudsman is nothing more than window dressing
2007-10-11 03:02:00
I was out all day, so I'm just now catching up with my RSS feeds. I'm seeing that one of the big stories in the blogosphere today is the latest article by the worldwide leader in sports' ombudsman, Le Anne Schreiber. She, as always, lowers the hammer upon the 4 letter network, calling them out on several issues. But one thing bothers me. Do the suits at the worldwide leader actually give two shits about her critiques? My guess is no.The ombudsman is nothing more than window dressing, something the 4 letter can point to, and say to the bloggers, media, and sports fans, "Hey, we hear your complkaints. See, we even have an ombudsman to help us self-police the network."Self-police? More like the fox watching the hen house.Every month, I see the sports blogosphere go ga-ga over the latest ombudsman column, and every month I continue to see the WWLiS act like the corporate monolith that it is, doing whatever the Hell they want, while the viewer's needs and complaints are ignored. Why do I get ...

Answering the Detroit Lions' week 5 "Burning questions"
2007-10-10 05:39:00
It's a day late, and I'm always a dollar short, but it's time when TWFE answers Mike O'Hara's burning questions about the team we love to hate, that is the cause of more angst than an Emo band, the Motor City Kitties, your 3-2 Detroit Lions.Today we burn the Lions awful offense and lame defense, ponder the convoluted reasoning behind Jon Kitna taking every snap in a blowout, and try to comprehend why on earth Aveion Cason is taking touches away from Kevin Jones and Tatum Bell.Burning questions from the Lions' 34-3 loss to the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field Sunday:Q: It was a bad performance by the offense. How much was the offense to blame?O'Hara: It gets its share, no doubt. The Lions wound up with 76 yards passing -- after 30 yards were deducted from Jon Kitna's total because of five sacks. There was nothing good about anything from anybody in the game -- players and coaches. But the defense shouldn't get off without criticism.Big Al: For a team that has the vast majority of their ...

We can stop speculating about life after Pudge. The Tigers pick up his contract option
2007-10-09 20:34:00
In what was pretty much a no-brainer for the Detroit Tigers, a decision I heartily agree with, they picked up the $13 million option year on Pudge Rodriguez's contract."That's it, just a little more to the left...THERE!I want my statue right next to Kaline's!"Why call it a no-brainer? Because keeping Pudge was the only realistic option for a team that plans on being a playoff contender. Let alone there was no one available that would have been significantly better than Pudge Rodriguez. Even as his skills decline, he is still a legitimate major league catcher. All in all, there were more than a few reasons for keeping Pudge behind the plate for at least 1 more year...1. Mike Ilitch's loyalty. We all know that the Pizza Man loves his superstars, and having big name players on the roster of both the Red Wings and Tigers. Despite his decline, Pudge is still a very big "Name."Then there's the fact that Pudge took a leap of faith (Admittedly, into a big $40+ million pile of cash) when he sig ...

This is the post where I would normally write about the Wolverines
2007-10-09 03:52:00
But thanks to the fiasco that is the Big 10 Network, I wasn't able to watch Michigan beat Eastern, or the OT thriller between Sparty and Northwestern. It's funny how a network that is being pitched as a Godsend that will give the Big 10 schools more exposure than ever before, instead has their fans seeing fewer Big 10 games than at any time in the past 25 years. On the plus side, I'm watching more games featuring the SEC, Pac 10, Big 12, ACC, and the Big East. Way to go, Big 10!

5 stages of Detroit Lions fandom
2007-10-08 22:53:00
We all know the "5 Stages of Grief."Denial AngerBargainingDepression Acceptance As Detroit Lions fans, we go through a similar physiological process every NFL season. That being the "5 Stages of Detroit Lions Fandom."Hope - This is the stage where we ignore the past, while deluding ourselves into thinking that this season will be different! Before the NFL season starts, we tend to forget the previous season(s) of ineptitude. We hope that Matt Millen didn't blow the draft...Again We hope that Rod Marinelli has learned from his mistakes. We hope that William Clay Ford will sell the team. We hope for a winning record. We hope for a .500 record. We hope the Lions don't become a laughingstock. More than anything, we just hope for the best. Normally, we fans remain in this stage till halftime of the 1st game of the regular season. In 2007, we were able to remain in this blissfully ignorant stage until the 1st quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles game debacle. During that loss though, our hope ...

Into the bye week on a very sour note: Final thoughts on Lions - Redskins
2007-10-07 23:50:00
I missed the much of the 2nd half thanks to the hamster that powers the local Detroit Edison plant deciding to hop off it's wheel, and take the afternoon off. So the entire 3rd quarter, and over half the 4th, was spent listening to the Lions' radio broadcast. On the radio, listening to Dan Miller and Jim Brandstatter, who take the term "Homer" to new heights, the game wasn't a blowout. The Lions only needed to score 4 times, and we'd have a game!!!Anyway, here's the links to my interrupted live blogging...Kitna is getting beat up: 1st quarter Lions - Redskins thoughtsIt's deja vu all over again: 2nd quarter Lions - Redskins thoughtsI didn't miss much, it's still a debacle: 4th quarter Lions - Redskins thoughts1. It happened again. The Lions lose in D.C. They are now 0-21 against the Washington Redskins. If the Lions want to change the perception of the fans and media, they can't have have losses that are outright debacles. You cannot deny this loss was anything other than abominable. I ...

I didn't miss much, it's still a debacle: 4th quarter Lions - Redskins thoughts
2007-10-07 22:16:00
I'm back after losing power during halftime. I guess someone at Detroit Edison didn't want me to see the rest of the game. I'd like to thank that person!I spent the last hour and change listening to the happy fun time broadcast of the Lions' radio team of Dan Miller and Jim "Silver lining" Brandstatter on my ancient Walkman. According to the radio broadcast, things weren't quite so dire for the Lions. Well, at least until the last Redskins score. At that point, even blatant homers like Miller and Brandstatter couldn't sugarcoat this outright turd of a performance. As I slide back into the live blogging, the 'Skins have just kicked a field goal to take a 27-3 lead. The Lions will start at their own 42, thanks to a 15 yard personal foul call on the Redskins. Why in the living HELL is Jon Kitna still in this game? He's been beaten and battered all damn day, they are down 4 scores, and there's 2:30 left in the fucking game! It's this kind of thinking that has me believing that Marinelli has ...

It's deja vu all over again: 2nd quarter Lions - Redskins thoughts
2007-10-07 21:01:00
The 'Skins start the 2nd quarter with a 3rd and 3. It's a swing pass to Portis, the Lions tip the pass, but it's still complete for a 1st down. Such is the Lions' luck today.Campbell hits Randel El for 16, but the Lions then stop Portis for a loss on 1st down. A pass to Randel El gets a short gain, but Cambpell drills Cooley for the 1st down on 3rd and long, and they are into Lions territory! Damn!On 1st down, Sims BLOWS UP Portis! Big time hit, goes for no gain. But on 2nd down, Randle El is running free in the Lions' secondary, he's to the Lion 25! The DB's haven't been able to cover anyone. The Lions D has been a sieve. It's Portis right up the gut to the Lions 13! Portis again to the 8! A short pass sets up a 3rd and 3 at the 7...TD Cooley! Campbell with a nice pass... 7-0 Washington. That was a long 80 yard drive, ate up over 7 minutes on the clock. The Lions offense needs to keep the D off the field for a few, as they need a blow, and more importantly, can't stop the 'Skins offen ...

Kitna is getting beat up: 1st quarter Lions - Redskins thoughts
2007-10-07 19:37:00
Will the Detroit Lions break their several generations long losing streak to the Washington Redskins? Is a 4-1 record possible? Are the Lions legit, or just another of the NFL many wannabe's? Today's game may answer those questions. We join Sam Rosen and Tim Ryan from the nation's capitol. The Redskins will be without Santana Moss, but do have Clinton Portis ready to go, and we all saw what a good RB could do to the Leo's D in the Philadelphia game. With those images of Brian Westbrook rampaging through the Lions' defense still fresh in my mind, I'm not all that confident about Detroit's chances, but then again, I never am...The Lions will kick, the 'Skins will start at their 23. A quick slant to Randle El, and Portis off tackle, the Redskins have a 1st down. 2 more Portis runs leave the 'Skins 3rd and 10, the Lions need a stop! Which they don't get, as a screen pass gets 11. Damn... In the Lions' favor, Portis limps off the field, in comes Ladell Betts. The 'Skins are damn methodical, ...

What the 2007 Lions can do to convince me that this version is any different from the previous 49 Lion teams
2007-10-06 23:38:00
The Lions complain, much as the late, great Rodney Dangerfield did, that they don't get any respect. They say that this team is different, and our faith in them shouldn't be clouded by the lackluster results of previous Lions teams. Unfortunately for them, they have those previous 50 years of suck that prevent most realistic fans and media from doling out that respect. So what do the Detroit Lions need to do to make this fan think differently?1. Win in Washington D.C. - The Lions have never won in DC. Let me repeat that for emphasis, the Detroit Lions have never won a game in Washington D.C. They've lost in championship games, in the regular season, late in games, by blowouts, in thrillers, in snoozers. If there is any way you can lose a game, the Lions have found that way against the Redskins. They are 0 for 20 since the 1930's. You can't ignore 70+ years of losing.Win Sunday, and the Lions may find themselves with plenty of respect, from both the media and fans, come Monday. Lose, an ...

Does anyone care that the Red Wings season is starting?
2007-10-03 03:05:00
Tomorrow night the Detroit Red Wings drop the puck on a new season, and the general reaction around town is either "So what? when do the playoffs start? or "Really? I had no idea."The start of the NHL season has taken a back seat to the NFL, NCAA football, the MLB playoffs, the chase for the Nextel Cup, the start of the new TV season, the release of Halo 3, The Rock's new movie, Notre Dame's valiant attempt to have a winless season, and damn near anything else you can think of. The NHL, even in a city known for it's love of hockey, is so far out of the public consciousness, saying the fans are apathetic would be an encouraging improvement.I have a few reasons why the start of the Red Wings season has gotten little more than a yawn out of me...The schedule, the schedule, the schedule - The NHL's unbalanced schedule absolutely screws over the Red Wings, and their fanbase. Answering the Detroit Tigers' "Burning questions," volume 14
2007-10-02 22:16:00
After watching last night's thrilling wild card playoff (In case you were wondering, it was a home run, and Holliday didn't touch the plate), I'm in the mood to talk some baseball. So it's time for the 1st offseason set of burning questions from the fertile little mind of Detroit News baseball "Expert" Lynn Henning. On Henning's mind this week are the Tigers playoff chances in 2008, who will be the opening day starter, Sheff's shoulder, and the 2 questions all Detroiters have on their mind, who will play shortstop and catcher for the '08 Tigers?Burning questions as the Tigers head for home and contemplate changes for 2008:Q: Should the Tigers be in the playoffs when so many weaker National League teams are still playing? Or did they get what they deserved when they lost the Central Division race and missed a wild-card reservation that was theirs for the taking?Henning: Had they won 90 games, there would have been a greater sense of injustice. They went 31-38 after July 19, so it's tough ...

Answering the Detroit Lions' week 4 "Burning questions"
2007-10-01 23:41:00
4 weeks into the NFL season, the Detroit Lions are a surprising 3-1. Once the shock has worn off, questions are raised. which means it's time for another round of my answering Detroit News beat writer Mike O'Hara's "Burning questions."This week O'Hara ponders questions regarding the Lions and their "New" attitude, the Bears' QB quandary, what grades the Lions' performance deserves, and how big a shock yesterday's victory actually was, if you take into account the Bears' big time problems.Let's smoke out some answers, shall we?Burning questions from the Lions' 37-27 victory over the Bears at Ford Field Sunday:Q: What made the difference for the Lions?O'Hara: It isn't just talent, although the Lions have more than in recent seasons. They use what they have better, but there's a different feeling on the team than there used to be.Big Al: Yes, for the most part, it is because of the talent. Along with the fact that they are more than a year into learning the offensive and defensive schemes ...

Is WXYT's AM sports talk format on the move to 97.1 FM?
2007-10-01 06:42:00
Update: As of 3PM, the Detroit sports talk landscape changed for the better, with 97.1 FM officially converting to an all sports format, with WXYZ's talent, and ditching the shock talk. The best news, in my opinion, is that they are going to a lineup that is all local, from 6AM to 2 AM, including weekends. The downfall of some of the biggest local radio powerhouses (WJR, I'm looking at you) is their over dependence on syndicated programming. Say what you will about the talent, at least 97.1 is leaving the syndicated filler on the shelf. As I sit here glumly watching the state of Michigan run out of money, while Nero watched Rome burn the legislature twiddles their thumbs, and the government prepares to shutdown all but the most vital services, a ran into a very interesting Detroit sports talk radio rumor...WXYT 1270 AM may be moving their sports talk format to 97.1 FM as soon as Monday morning.Michiguide.com says...Rumors are running white-hot that CBS radio is about to pull the plug ...

34 points the 4th quarter! Final thoughts on Lions - Bears
2007-10-01 01:46:00
Here's the links to my live blogging of today's exciting, ugly, bizarre, and record breaking win...The Bears offense is putrid: 1st quarter Lions - Bears thoughts So what do you know, Griese actually is better than Grossman: 2nd quarter Lions - Bears thoughtsWhere's the Lions' offense? 3rd quarter Lions - Bears thoughtsThe Lions find a running game: 4th quarter Lions - Bears thoughts1. For the Lions, today was 3 quarters of mediocrity, and 1 quarter of pure awesomeness. I didn't realize it at first, as I was totally wrapped up in blogging the game, but the Lions scored a jaw dropping, and an NFL record breaking, 34 4th quarter points. Against the Monsters of the Midway, of all teams...Yes, some of the scoring was fluky (Running back an onsides kick for a TD), but much of it was truly encouraging. Such as the 5+ minute, 8 play, 62 yard drive that put the Lions up 30-20 with just over 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter, a drive that was done mostly with the long AWOL ground game. That's t ...

The Lions find a running game: 4th quarter Lions - Bears thoughts
2007-09-30 22:46:00
1st play of the 4th, a pass to McDonald in the flat...He scoots in for the TD! 13-10, Bears still lead. It's a ballgame, folks! All I ask is the Lions kick the ball away from Hester. No such luck, but it's a moral victory, as Hester is stopped at the Bears 26.On a swing pass, Fernando Bryant is called for a very silly spear on Benson, moving the ball all the Bears 48. An uber-braindead play by Bryant. Benson was already down, and it couldn't have been more blatant! It's 3rd and 3 from the 50...Griese looks....KEITH SMITH PICKS GRIESE! Nothing but green in front of him! 63 yard TD return! Holy god damn shit! What the Hell was Griese thinking?!17-13, LIONS! I'm stunned, to say the very least...On the kickoff, it's to Hester at the 5...Oh shit...95 yards, and several missed tackles later...20-17 Bears.Special teams coverage is just killing the Lions today. At this point, I'd much rather see the Lions squib every kick. They sure as Hell can't tackle Hester, as he now has 261 (!) return yar ...

Where's the Lions' offense? 3rd quarter Lions - Bears thoughts
2007-09-30 21:42:00
Will the Lions stop shooting themselves in the foot? Will Brian Griese continue to keep mistakes to a minimum, and "Manage the game" for the Bears? The next 2 quarters will answer all, and go a very long way in determining who will take control of the NFC North. The Bears will start with the ball at their 20. Cedric Benson gets 8 and 16 yards on 2 carries to start the half. That's not a good sign, as he had a whole 3 yards rushing in 5 previous carries.A 1 yard Benson run, and a big Lions pass rush that leads to a tipped pass, leaves the Bears 3rd and 9. Griese hits Gilmour in the numbers right at the stick...He DROPS the pass to force a punt. Whew...
