The Wayne Fontes Experience
The Wayne Fontes Experience is a weblog featuring my uninformed, snarky, and completely biased blathering on Detroit sports. You may see the occasional pop culture rant and some lame attempts at humor, but mostly sports. I do ask readers to remember one thing..."In Detroit, you're with us, or we hate you."

Are Craig Monroe's days as a Tiger numbered?
2007-07-19 22:19:00
The newest Tiger, Timo Perez, is the hot topic in Detroit today. I'm sure the first question you'll ask is, "Who in the Hell is Timo Perez?"Timo was called up to take Marcus Thames place on the 25 man roster, as Thames was placed on the 15 day DL this morning. Damn, make a great catch, but blow up your hamstring in the process. I hated to see Thames go down, as he was putting together a very nice stretch of baseball, and was a threat to go yard every at bat.Now that Thames is out of the equation for (At least) the next 2 weeks, why bring up Timo Perez? Personally, I thought that it would be Chris Shelton getting the call.I can see where the Perez call up is coming from, in that he was leading Toledo, and the International League, in hitting. He's definitely having a better season that Shelton. More importantly, it also shows the players in the minor league system that if you perform, you will get rewarded. Despite his being considered a 4A player, a minor league depth guy, Perez ha ...

Sometimes, you just have to pay homage...
2007-07-19 03:28:00
It's been a while since I paid homage to the patron saint of this blog, the Lions' coach with the most wins, and losses, let alone by far the most entertaining, in their long, and not so esteemed history, Wayne-o, Mr. "Whaddaya mean, I'm fired?"That being The Big Buck himself, Wayne Fontes. The author of "From the Copa,"Rock & Rye, currently residing in exile at his parent's house, while waiting for his nuptials to take place, found this gem of a Wayne Fontes football card the other day while rummaging through his old baseball card collection. I just had to post it here at TWFE.Wayne Fontes, unleashing his wrath of destruction on his unsuspecting NFC Central division foes...From looking at his glorious visage, you know what? You know that man wouldn't take the wind in OT. That man wouldn't run the "Wet toast" offense. That man wouldn't threaten to give bus tickets out of town, and not follow up on the threat. That man wouldn't keep a drunk, naked, fast food eating line coach on ...

Lynn Henning asks the "Burning questions," TWFE has the answers
2007-07-18 21:00:00
As Detroit News columnist Lynn Henning is wont to do, he asks, and then answers, his own "Burning questions" in regard to the Detroit Tigers. Since it went so well in answering Ian's questions last week, I thought I'd try the same exercise with Henning's Q and A. This may even turn into a running feature, as I'm always game for post ideas. It helps that I don't often agree with Henning, as you will soon find out...Q: Will the Tigers make any major moves ahead of the trade deadline?Henning: They propped up their bullpen -- at minimal cost -- with the shrewd trades for Macay McBride and Jose Capellan, which is what they needed to do ahead of Joel Zumaya's and Fernando Rodney's presumed returns to form.It eliminates the need to invest heavily in an upper-tier reliever or position player.Big Al: I'm not nearly as sold as Henning that adding Macay McBride and Jose Capellan is the be all, end all, to the Tigers' bullpen issues. I have to wonder if the Tigers are feeling the same way ...

TWFE behind the scenes: William Clay Ford closes the deal with Cory Redding
2007-07-18 02:09:00
Does it concern anyone else that the Detroit Lions made Cory Redding the highest paid defensive tackle in all of football? The Lions now have massive amount of cap room tied up in 2 areas, wide receiver and the D-line.Redding has never been mentioned as an elite player at his position. Not by the experts, the media, fans, anyone. He's coming off of a career year, but will Redding continue to play at a level worthy of big money? Let alone all of the cap space...It remains to be seen, but I'm not all that confident about anyone the Lions deem worthy. They've done so well with long-term contracts in the past... If you believe that, I have a mint Mustang II to sell you.To me, the most interesting bit of Redding signing was that the old man, the Lions owner himself, William Clay Ford Sr, spoke to Redding, convincing him to re-up with the Lions.Quoth Mr. Ford, "HAAACK..Who's Cory Redding?"In fact, TWFE has obtained a transcript of that conversation...Cory Redding: Hello?William Clay For ...

Only in Detroit...
2007-07-17 19:49:00
The never ending saga of what to do with Tiger Stadium continues in a city that has too many politicians looking out for themselves, rather than the needs of the populace. In today's Freep, I saw this comment from one of the rocket scientists on Detroit's city council, councilwoman JoAnn Watson."It would be ridiculous to demolish an existing structure without having a developer lined up."Does Watson even realize that she's talking about the crumbling health hazard of a structure once known as Tiger Stadium? That it hasn't been used in several years, and was barely maintained for several more years beforehand? That it's an albatross, a white elephant, a structure that has no reasonable use to the city?I'm no real estate wizard, but it just seems that if you had a lick of common sense, you'd think that the land Tiger Stadium sits on would be more attractive to developers if there wasn't a rotting from the inside out ABANDONED STADIUM on said land? It's insane to think that the ...

We have conformation as to who are the toughest mofo's on the planet
2007-07-17 17:00:00
It's Aussie rugby players.BRISBANE, Australia — Rugby player Ben Czislowski kept competing for more than three months despite the headaches that started after a clash with an opponent.Czislowski was playing for Brisbane team Wynnum during the April 1 incident involving Tweed Heads forward Matt Austin. He had a head wound stitched up afterward, the Australian Associated Press reported Tuesday.Czislowski later suffered an eye infection and complained of lethargy and shooting pains in his head. That's impressive enough, playing through pain, but most athletes do so (Other than Dominik Hasek). But then comes the kicker...Then last week, his doctor found a tooth embedded in Czislowski’s head.Did I read that correctly? He played for 3 months with A TOOTH EMBEDDED IN HIS SKULL?Jesus Christ, that's hardcore.Think about it. It's not just the fact that Czislowski played with a molar impacted in his skull, but how hard a blow to the noggin did he take in the first place, that would cause h ...

Reason #95 why Jim Leyland is a great manager
2007-07-16 21:29:00
When word came from the MSM that Jim Leyland was pissed, and wasn't going to take it anymore, it was just another example as to why the Marlboro Man is such a damn good manager."I respectfully disagree with your decision, and wish to speak with your supervisor."To say that Leyland was quite unhappy about Pudge Rodriguez's getting hit for a 1 game suspension, is an understatement."I think the suspension is totally out of line. The umpire gave a very fair report that Pudge did not intentionally bump him."I don't think it's a matter of him taking a day off so it's OK for him to be suspended," said Leyland. "That's bull. That's just saying they're right, so we'll pick the right day and everybody's happy. That's not the point. The man shouldn't have been suspended. That's ridiculous.I know some fans think, "What's the dif? Pudge is going to be taking a day off anyway."But doing so would be condoning MLB's questionable, or should I say, asinine, decision. Like most of you, I s ...

Rob Parker alert: Lloyd Carr is done after this season...Well, he kinda sorta maybe could retire
2007-07-16 06:46:00
I had the TV on in the background, but really wasn't paying all that much attention to WDIV's "Sports Final Edition," as SFE give Rob Parker way too much airtime. I don't need any Parker in my life at 11:45 pm.But then his rumor mongering bit, "Clubhouse Confidential" came on.Despite doing my best to ignore Wobb, I thought heard him mention "Lloyd Carr," "Retirement" and "This season." That immediately got my attention, so I rewound the soundbite on the DVR. These were his exact words..."My moles are telling me that this is it! This will be Lloyd Carr's last year if everything goes right." And you know we've heard some grumblings in the past, maybe he might hang it up, this and that, but my moles in Ann Arbor say this could be the year."That's his big news? I got all wound up for that?I just love how he gives himself a pair of outs in regard to Lloyd leaving, using terms like "If everything goes right," and "This could be the year.""Maybe he might?" Much as 2 negatives make a po ...

It's good to be a Swede
2007-07-15 21:08:00
(My apologies to the women that read TWFE, and I know there are a few, but the following post is going to outright pander to TWFE's vast male readership. We are all pigs, as if you didn't already know...)Earlier this week, in a interview with the Swedish media, Henrik Zetterberg claimed that he wants to spend his entire career as a Red Wing. As good to hear as that is, it does brings up one important question. Will Emma Andersson be with him as well?Emma and Henrik sitting in a tree Volvo, K.I.S.S.I.N.G.Turns out that the Zetterberg & Andersson pairing is the Swedish equivalent of TomKat or David Beckham and whatever Spice Girl he hooked up with. (I believe it was "Skinny Spice.")If you think the above picture is nothing special, that Andersson's just "Cute," or "Perky," let's see what else I found while poking around the series of tubes called the internets. Turns out she's quite the dish.As Ralph Kramden used to say, "Homina-homina-homina..."If you'd like to see more, lots more, ...

As you can see, TWFE looks quite different today. It was time to do something about the looks of the blog, as the previous template was so 2003. Working on the guts of your blog is EXHAUSTING! Actually, I just wanted to show that I still have all my hair... So far, it's gone fairly well, save for the blog looking slightly different between Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer. Which brings up the question, "Why on earth are you still using IE?"You can anticipate more changes, a new URL, amongst other things, so please be prepared. Thanks for reading!

Cutting off your nose to spite your face is no way to live life
2007-07-13 22:59:00
In today's Freep, Michael Rosenberg talks to one of the founders of the misguided, though they admittedly had good intentions, "Tiger Stadium Fan Club." A group that just can't let go of the past. Turns out, that the one of the co-founders of the club, Frank Rashid, is no longer a Tigers fan, thanks to their leaving Tiger Stadium."What I liken it to is what it must be like to fall out of love with someone," he said. "You make the separation, and I made the separation."How did he get here? It began with Yost's home runs and stayed in Tiger Stadium for the next three decades. That is when the Tigers started clamoring for a new stadium.Rashid, who considered Tiger Stadium and the Tigers to be intertwined, objected. So, of course, did thousands of people. Rashid cofounded the Tiger Stadium Fan Club, determined to keep the Tigers at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull. As you may have heard, the Tigers moved anyway. Most Tiger Stadium fans moved with them -- if not initially, then by la ...

"Bless you Boys" asks the questions, TWFE has the answers
2007-07-13 19:18:00
Most days, I wake up having no idea what I'm going to write about here at TWFE. I'll pound the coffee, sit in front of the PC, and then surf around the series of tubes till inspiration, or something I can "Borrow," strikes...Often, inspiration doesn't strike till late in the day. When you see a post time stamped sometime in the evening, odds are I was having some sort of writers block.Today was looking like one of those days... But after reading Kurt's answers to Ian's questions about the Tigers second half issues this morning, well, that was something I could "Borrow."Let the blog tag commence...Do the Tigers still need to upgrade at first base, or is Sean Casey's production acceptable, especially considering how many runs this team scores?Even though the fans may find Casey's production unacceptable, the Tigers seem happy with the limited output they've been getting from The Mayor. Casey does give a couple of things the Tigers had lacked, in that he doesn't strike out, and h ...

Detroit Tigers midseason grades: Pitching
2007-07-12 22:20:00
Jeremy Bonderman: Finally having the breakout season that everyone had been predicting, including TWFE, for the past 3 years. Bonderman just missed making the All-Star team for the 2nd consecutive season, and leads AL starting pitchers in winning percentage with a 9-1 record. Bondy still has 1st inning issues, as he has for his entire career, spotting the opposition 1-2 runs. He dominates from the 2nd inning on, so I can live with the early jitters. I'm bumping his grade up a notch for finally growing a decent head of hair, as the buzzed look was not at all flattering, but he gives it back in thanks to those 1st inning runs. A-Tim Byrdak: Has been the most effective LOOGY on the roster, as left handers are hitting only .208 against him. He's less effective against right handers, but has held his own. Byrdak has been a most pleasant surprise. He's one of the few bullpen inhabitants that fans are happy with, myself included. BJosé Capellán: Just like Macay McBride, Capellán is a re ...

Detroit Tigers midseason grades: Position players
2007-07-12 06:05:00
Sean Casey: We knew the Mayor was snail slow, had little power, and was a capable defender. It was hoped that, at the very least, he would hit for average. To this point, he's been better than advertised on defense, and has progressed to being below average offensively for a 1st baseman. Casey, to his credit, after a horrific start, has raised his BA to .300. But he's done so with absolutely no power. None. Nada. Zip. Neifi Perez has as many dingers as Casey, which is not what you want to see from a corner infielder. Could the Tigers do better? Sure they could. But the Mayor is a good fit for this team, and there are much bigger issues that need to be resolved on the Tigers roster. B-Curtis Granderson: At Mack Avenue Tigers, I called Granderson the biggest reason for the Tigers success, due to the combination of excellent offense and Gold glove caliber defense. As he goes, so do the Tigers. It was true last season, and even more so this season. For all the talk nationally that the In ...

I've finally been convinced. The All-Star Game is an anachronism
2007-07-11 19:42:00
As my formative years were in the 70's, I was lucky to see 1 televised ballgame a week, between NBC's Saturday "Game of the Week," or the occasional Tigers broadcast. So the All-Star Game was a big damn deal to me, as I rarely got to see the Tigers, let alone mysterious National Leaguers like Aaron, Bench, and Seaver.I'm old enough to have watched live one of the more prominent examples of the ASG's importance, Pete Rose essentially ending Ray Fosse's career as an effective player by running him over to win the 1970 game. The ASG actually meant something then, but didn't determine anything more than bragging rights. It was truly the "Midseason Classic."Once upon a time, you'd run over your mother, let alone a catcher, to win the All-Star GameThat's no longer the case. To see the ASG in a long, slow downward spiral is a shame. There is no good reason for the winner to get home field in the World Series. No matter how important the ASG is, in the end, it's only an exhibition, not ...

Charter, you're on double secret probation...
2007-07-11 04:38:00
Well, Charter did it to me again. No series of tubes for over 11 hours today. It finally came back around 10 pm. I'd love to get some new posts up, but when you can't get on line, what are you going to do? I guess I'll just bitch about my cable provider...Charter gives me no web access for 2 days, no Big Ten Network (Maybe ever), it goes down at the first stiff breeze, and I pay way too much for the service, just adding to my aggravation. I might just as well bend over...Anyway, bar Charter going down again, which wouldn't surprise me one bit, expect new content tomorrow.

Detroit is where wide receiver contracts go to die
2007-07-10 04:41:00
Pat Kirwan of NFL.com reported that Matt Millen has 16 different wide receivers either currently under contract, or still on the Lions' books as dead money.16 wide receivers? Only 16? Seems on the low side to me. At this point, I can't even make jokes about it, as what's any more sillier than having to pay 16 receivers when normal NFL teams have 5, 6 at most, wide receivers on their roster. Unfortunately, there's nothing normal about the Detroit Lions. It'd be hilarious, if it wasn't so damned pitiful.Christ, I'm sure they still have Steve Mariucci on the books as well. Knowing the Lions lack of institutional control, I'd guess they are still paying a salary to Russ Thomas, even though he's been dead and buried for 16 years.Other receivers still on the books include Whizzer White, Cloyce Box, Ron Jessie, Pete Mandley, Joe Don Looney, Earl McCullough, Dennis Franklin, Feddie Scott, and Bill Schroeder. Wonders never cease when it comes to the Lions...

Chauncey Billups' agent admits defeat, settles for only $12 million a season
2007-07-08 00:54:00
Chauncey Billups was a rich man. Now he's a VERY rich man with the announcement that he and the Detroit Pistons had agreed in principle on a new 5 year deal worth up to $60 million dollars, with $46 million guaranteed. So what do you know, Chris McCoskey was proven right after all...Still unable to afford Cristal after settling for $46 million guaranteed, Chauncey Billups again shoots a 40 in celebration of not having to listen to his delusional agent ever again The Pistons didn't have to give Chauncey Biillups $12 million a season, but it's sill a below market value deal (When compared to Rashard Lewis' insane new contract, as Chauncey is a better player who plays far more important position) for a point guard thought to be in the top 5 at his position.I've read the opinion of some fans who argued that the Pistons overpaid for Billups, as there were no other real bidders for his services, other than the imaginary ones that Billips' agent conjured up after McCoskey broke the story ...

When SI.com prints your email, can you consider yourself a published author?
2007-07-07 02:52:00
Just to toot my own horn somewhat, the short letter I sent in response to Michael Silver's NFL owner rankings was published as part of his follow up column. Hey, at least I made the top of page 4.Silver's column inspired my own post about Ford's ineptitude on 7/2. I boiled my post down to a pithy, 6 sentence, note to Silver. Surprisingly, he thought enough of my calling him "Nuts" to print it.Here's my 10 seconds of online stardom..."William Clay Ford isn't the worst owner in the NFL? With all due respect, I have to ask, are you nuts? Ford is the worst owner in NFL history. This says it all about the Ford era. The Detroit Lions have won just 1, count 'em, 1, playoff game since WCF became the sole owner of the Lions in 1964. The only thing Ford has brought to the Detroit fan base is pain."-- Al Beaton from Detroit Hmmm. Maybe those 'Fire Millen' signs were directed at the wrong honcho.

Quick hits on the Detroit big 4
2007-07-06 23:03:00
Detroit Red Wings - Since the opening of free agency, there have been some nice signings (Brian Rafalski, nailing down Dom Hasek for 1 more season, keeping the young core), and no catastrophic roster losses. (Losing Scheinder did hurt, but Holland recovered nicely getting the comparable, but younger, Rafalski, and Burtuzzi, Calder, and Lang won't be missed)Considering the ownership issues that is causing the deconstruction of the Preds, and the continual par for the course drunken stumbling done by of the rest of the NHL's central division, the Red Wings are in fine shape to make a playoff run. They should also have enough salary cap room to allow a big move to be made at the 2008 trade deadline.I'm not one to go into deep analysis the Red Wings' moves, as the Red Wings blogging nation can do 10X the breakdown that I'm capable of doing. And from reading them, they feel that the Wings' off season has been pretty decent up to this point. They aren't thrilled, but far from being ho ...

MLB gives the Tigers a competitive advantage over the rest of the AL
2007-07-06 17:19:00
The Detroit Tigers just got a little bit better this morning....In fact, the Tigers got considerably better. Not in thanks to their calling up Ryan Raburn from Toledo. Turns out that move was made in response to MLB suspending Neifi Perez for 25 games (!) for testing positive for a banned stimulant.Neifi Perez, Tigers tweakerThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that infielder Neifi Perez of the Detroit Tigers has been suspended 25 games, effective immediately, for testing positive for a banned Stimulant in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.NEIFI PEREZ?! If he's on the greenies, they sure as Hell can't be all that stimulating. In other MLB news, expect every other team to begin slipping Mickey's full of amphetamines to the 25th man on their rosters, in an attempt to free up valuable roster space.I expect Craig Monroe and Jason Grilli to be the next Tigers to test positive. EVERYBODY PANIC!!! - It was only one loss, get over it
2007-07-04 07:06:00
Tuesday's 5-4 extra innings loss to the Tribe was a gut punch sort of game, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I sure as Hell won't push the panic button, unlike some freaked out Tigers fans. (Just check any Tigers message board after a game like this to see fans literally go off the deep end)Even though the Tigers lost, it was a well played game. Unfortunately, the Tigers failed to capitalize on their chances, and despite what many fans might believe, you can't win them all.MLB has just reached the halfway mark, and the Tigers are deep in a playoff race. One loss doesn't change that at all. Avoid a sweep, and the Tigers will be fine. Get swept by the Tribe? It wouldn't be pretty, but it won't knock them out of contention. It wouldn't change the fact that the Tigers will be in the thick of a pennant race when September rolls around.Of course, it isn't all peaches and Herb cream with the Tigers.Would I like to see the Tigers playing better at home? Sure. Would I like to s ...

Today's lesson in Economics 101
2007-07-03 23:14:00
Chauncey Billups learned a lesson in economics today. Specifically in regard to the laws of supply and demand. Here's "Supply and demand" defined: "Demand means the quantity of a given article which would be taken at a given price. Supply means the quantity of that article which could be had at that price."In other words, the law of supply and demand means your price is going to go down when the supply is greater than the demand.Chauncey Billups entered the free agent market as the best point guard available, and could be signed by any bidder. But the market for veteran point guards turned out to be minimal, especially after the NBA draft. The teams that needed PG's, got themselves PG's, at a price cheaper than the going rate for Billups.Unable to afford Cristal after signing his below market deal, Chauncey Billups celebrates his new deal by chugging a 40The veteran PG market thus dwindled down to one team, the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons weren't about to get into a bidding war wit ...

Waiting for the Big Ten Network? Don't hold your breath
2007-07-03 20:45:00
The Big Ten Network: Only available in markets with a population of less than 5,000! I saw a short blurb about the "Big Ten Network" in today's Freep, which read like a cut and paste job from a Big 10 press release. One line caught my eye..."The network also announced verbal commitments with 75 cable providers -- up from the 40-50 it discussed last week."That was good to read. Finally, we may get news if we'll actually get to see football in the fall. Up to this point, I'd heard bubkus from the Big 10 as to what cable companies would carry the B10N.So, in looking for more info, I found the B10N's website, and started to poke around for broadcast information. What I found wasn't very encouraging to the vast majority of Big 10 fans. Some of the local systems planning to carry Big Ten Network as part of their expanded basic level of service include Altatec Alta Municipal Utility, Cedar Falls Utilities, Celect Communications, Consolidated Communications Network Services, City of Wadswo ...

Detroit Lions fans get slapped in the face once again
2007-07-02 22:50:00
As I was absentmindedly sorting through my RSS feeds, I stumbled across the latest column from SI's Michael Silver, in which he ranks the NFL owners, 1 thru 32.Interesting enough column fodder, but the main reason I checked it out was to see where our own doddering octogenarian, William Clay Ford, Sr., ranked. Ford has to be last. He just has to be, right?Wrong.29. William Clay Ford (Bill Ford Jr.), LionsWhich genius auto magnate is responsible for the disaster in Big D? That depends on whom you talk to -- though I'm told that Ford Jr., if he had his way, would have fired team president Matt Millen long ago. Either way, there's no disputing that this franchise runs like the Edsel. He spends the next paragraph bitching about the lack of punishment Lions organization gave to the dunk driving, naked, fast food eating, o-line coach. Local bloggers endlessly hashed over Naked Coach during the regular season. Whatever. Hell, Ford probably has no idea who Naked Coach is, and that he works ...

Writers says the funniest things...
2007-07-02 19:59:00
In Sunday's Freep, Jon Paul Morosi says the Tigers may have to trade Craig Monroe to get a competent reliever. Really? Craig Monroe? If Dave Dombrowski can get more than a gross bag pair of used batting gloves for Monroe, and his .270 (!) OBP, at this point, DD won't just win "Executive of the Year," he's a lock for "Executive of the God Damn Millennium."I think a better article would have asked how much longer the Tigers can afford to keep a corner outfielder who can't get on base in the lineup. Despite all the goodwill Monroe generated for his late game heroics in 2006, a corner outfielder who has a Neifi Perez-like OBP shouldn't even be in the majors, let alone starting for a pennant contender.

Think the Tigers will be the death of you?
2007-07-01 23:15:00
As I was flipping through my latest issue of "Baseball Digest" magazine, which is the rose colored glasses view of MLB, I ran into something that wasn't quite so rosy, especially for the 12 year olds that read the digest for it's not all that insightful info. While flipping through my digest, and perusing the quite normal ads for games, books, posters, and collectibles, one abnormal advertisement stood out. Mostly due to it being in color, but also thanks to it being kind of grim. But even "Baseball Digest" needs to pay the bills...The ad did bring a question to mind. Just how big of a baseball fan are you?Think you are a Tigers fan? A real Tigers fan? A Tigers fan both in life, and in death?
