The Wayne Fontes Experience
The Wayne Fontes Experience is a weblog featuring my uninformed, snarky, and completely biased blathering on Detroit sports. You may see the occasional pop culture rant and some lame attempts at humor, but mostly sports. I do ask readers to remember one thing..."In Detroit, you're with us, or we hate you."

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - Sparty wins, and moves on
2008-03-20 22:59:00
If there is one type of comment thread that gets real redundant, real quick, is one involving MSU or U of M. Within a couple of posts, you can expect to see old and busted put downs like scUM stinkbear, Moo U and Spartina used by the cretinous mouth breathers who tend to haunt fishwrap forums.Call me jaded by my daily forays into the stink that is newspaper commenting threads, but to see insult after insult after insult, it becomes more tiresome than anything else. Which is why it was refreshing to see a MSU fan named msulaw quickly analyze Sparty's easy 72-61 1st round victory over Temple in the NCAA's. Nothing more, nothing less. This was a good game by Neitzel. Sure, it would be nice if he scored more, but if teams are going to continue to double/hound him, that just frees up the rest of the team to score. Pitt will be a much tougher opponent than MSU, but I also believe that Pitt is a bit overrated. Sweet 16 is probably the best this team can expect (though Memphis is quite beatable ...

Drew Sharp continues to flip-flop like...Drew Sharp
2008-03-20 19:50:00
For those of you keeping score, the Freep's Drew Sharp has, once again, flip-flopped his opinion in regard to Rich Rodriguez's (failed) recruitment of Terrelle Pryor.Let's look at Drew's scorecard... (The columns are no longer archived, so I've linked back to my post about Sharp's first 180 on 1/27)January 14, 2008:Michigan coach must beat Ohio State to nation's No. 1 recruit Terrelle PryorJanuary 27, 2008:Michigan landing super recruit Terrelle Pryor would be an overrated victoryMarch 20, 2008:Jim Tressel 1, Rich Rodriguez 0Sharp has gone from "ZOMG, Michigan must land Pryor," to "Pshaw, it's not that big a deal," and back to "ZOMG, Tressel wins again!" My neck hurts from the whiplash!Let's look at Sharp's money quotes from his 3 wishy-washy columns.Pryor column #1:He must keep Pryor away from Jim Tressel. He must do whatever it takes.Failure is not an option.A bit over the top, and totally far-fetched as Michigan wasn't even on Pryor's radar till Rodriguez was hired in mid-December. M ...

Terrelle Pryor picks tUOS! Whatever, dude...
2008-03-19 22:08:00
After drawing out the recruiting process to the point utter ridiculousness, Terrelle Pryor finally announced what school he was going to attend. His choice? The "University of Ohio State." (His words, not mine...)That Pryor picked tUOS is just another in a feather in CheatyPants McSweaterVest's already overly feathered cap.It being a month past signing day, fans of all the schools involved (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon) were to the point of no longer giving a shit what school the kid chose, just as long as he made a decision. I'm not cheesed off Pryor didn't pick the Wolverines. Far from it, in fact. I'm fucking glad I don't have to hear or read anymore stories about an 18 year old kid milking his time in the spotlight. From altercations with fans after basketball games, the rumormongering over totally phantom recruiting violations, to breathless daily headlines in the Detroit fishwraps about Pryor pandering to the scary recruitniks, has there been a more glaring example of ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - Kool-Aid drinking morons getting a dose of reality
2008-03-18 20:17:00
After all the angst, drama and seriousness at TWFE in regard to ancient columnists and University of Michigan academics yesterday, I was in the mood for something damn funny for today's COTD. And I found one that was cruel, but made me laugh out loud, at Mlive today. In a long comment thread attached to to an AP interview with Rod Marinelli which had long devolved into a "True fans believe in Rod" / "It's the Lions, how can you buy into their rhetoric?" (Not that a word like "rhetoric" would ever be used at Mlive) flame war, Mliver bigrob44 made me laugh out loud with this nugget of wisdom. This place is filled with Kool-aide drinking morons. That insult is blunt, to the point, more than a little mean, and damn funny! At least it was to me, as it cracked me up! Who hasn't wanted to jump into the middle of a commenting flame war, and lay waste to both irrational sides with a snide insult? When called out by the Kool-Aid drinkers, bigrob44 had another truth filled comeback.doom and gloom ...

It's the bullpen, stupid!
2008-03-18 19:25:00
That seems to be the standard refrain regarding the Detroit Tigers this week, as noted by both Lynn Henning in his Detroit News "blog," and Tom Verducci at SI.com.Henning: Can the Tigers bullpen be trusted?Verducci: Keeping up with Jones - Aside from their closer, Tigers 'pen is a big concernBoth articles state the same thing, no one is sure what to expect from the Detroit bullpen when the season starts. Not the Tigers front office, the Marlboro Man, the media, the fans or even the players themselvesI've been pondering the bullpen "situation" myself, and have come up with several possible solutions. Some are a tad far-fetched, but this is a "throw shit against the wall and see what sticks" brainstorming exercise. You know what tends to spew out of my cranium, namely half-assed opinions and half-baked ideas, so bear with me...1. The simplest answer is the right answer, the Occam's Razor solution. So the answer is simple. Score more than the other guys. Lots more. If Mike Ilitch plans on ...

Above the fold - Michigan is being drug through the mud...again
2008-03-17 21:24:00
From reading the comments left in the wake of the A2 News' "expose" on Michigan athletes and their academic records, I now have a splitting headache from all the arguing. You can break down the commenters into 3 categories.1. Irrational haters: Michigan is a FRAUD! I used one of the shorter comments, as most of the "haters" wrote novel length diatribes. Here's a brief thought from a commenter named ndifranco.I think many of you are hilarious. Your sole defense for Michigan's actions is "Everyone else is doing it too." That's some solid, solid footing. It's good to see the high road goes nowhere through your town.2. Those wearing maize and blue colored glasses: Michigan does no wrong. EVER! The Ann Arbor news should never have gone forward with this! The not ironically named cartythehack says...Nobody else even dignify this blog with a response or even a view. I'm about to cancel my A2News subscription do to this unbearably biased Carty and his squad of HACKS. If you really want to do s ...

If I'm pissing off the (really) old guard, I must be doing something right
2008-03-17 18:45:00
Back in early January, I wrote a piece about the Detroit News columnist Jerry Green, who had mentioned TWFE in his column (My saying "he only writes about dead people"), but didn't attribute where it came from.As is my wont, I wrote several hundred words worth of old people jokes, while reminding the MSM in general the last thing I'd ever call myself is a journalist. I'm not fair and balanced, I'm entirely biased and partial. I'm just a fan of Detroit sports who happens to have bully pulpit, and willing to use it to call out the local MSM.Well, 3 whole months months later, while doing a Google search, Jerry found my post. He wasn't at all happy, and decided to let me know of his displeasure. His reply arrived via email over the weekend. How do I know it was from him? It was from a personal AOL email address, and we all know AOL is the refuge of the computer illiterate, and and the aged. When I told my best friend about Jerry's pissy message, he said, "You gotta blog about it!" So I am.. ...

Above the fold - Stupidity reigns in the fishwraps
2008-03-14 19:58:00
Stupidity reigns in the Detroit newspapers. Today is no exception...At Mlive, Steve Grinzel makes possibly the dumbest statement I've ever seen in print or on the web.If Michigan State could guarantee it would win the Big Ten Tournament by agreeing to take a loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament would you take it?I think if I'm the Spartans I would. On second thought, I have to say that is the dumbest statement I've ever seen in print or on the web.Winning a made for TV event, one that doesn't mean much of anything in the big scheme of things (Does anyone remember who won it last season? Or even care?), is more important that a long run in the only tournament anyone with 2 functioning brain cells cares about? If there is someone out there who ranks conference tournament titles over NCAA Sweet 16, Elite 8 or Final Four runs, I've yet to meet them. Well, until now.Conference tournaments do little more than line the pockets of the big time colleges with cash. Lots and lots of TV n ...

Pudge Rodriguez has embraced the idea of plate discipline. TWFE asks, "Did pigs start flying too?"
2008-03-13 18:57:00
One of the biggest stories out of Lakeland this spring is the plate resurgence of one Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, who has rediscovered his power stroke. Even more shocking/interestingly/stunningly Pudge, with his quite deserved reputation of being the free swingingest of baseball's free swingers, is supposedly working on (GASP!!!) his plate discipline? The strike zone as shown in the MLB rulebook. The strike zone as seen thru the eyes of Pudge Rodriguez...Discipline at the PLATE? I had to double check. Pudge wasn't talking about being more disciplined with his plate at the dinner table, or when feeling up the head of Don Zimmer. The Tigers' catcher was referring to when he's at bat! No! Damn! Way!Yet, according to the no longer Pudgy one himself, it's true."No, I don't think I've had a Spring Training like that as far as home runs," Rodriguez said after Wednesday's power display. "But I don't look for that. It's good, yes. I have six home runs in Spring Training. The main thing about it is ...

The Tigers bullpen is just fine...No, it isn't...Yes, it is....No....Yes...
2008-03-12 22:16:00
Rodney missing the opener? Cruceta still AWOL? Jones with a 24 something spring ERA, and having "arm strength" issues? Zumaya still weeks away from throwing in anger? Grilli feels the need to be the "voice of reason?" Miner being considered as a late game set up man?Even though it's 2 weeks plus till opening day, you can now consider me OFFICIALLY CONCERNED about the Tigers' bullpen.I know the Tigers have a powerful lineup capable of scoring 1000 runs. That's great, yet the bullpen, as it now stands, has me thinking it'll give up a 1001 runs. I know my thinking isn't rational, and many of the bullpen issues will suitably sort themselves out as the season progresses. But I have a sinking feeling in my beer filled gut we'll be spending way too many 9th innings cursing out the bullpen for it's inability to protect big leads.I can imagine it now:Hey, it's 7-3 going into the 8th inning? I need to make trip to the fridge and get myself a cold one to get through the 9th. //grab beer and pork ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - Drew Sharp hates everything
2008-03-10 20:50:00
Drew Sharp continued his mindless Big 10 bashing by calling the Michigan and Michigan State basketball programs "a joke." The Freep editors, obviously trying to rile up the fans of both schools, gleefully gave Sharp's tripe a tabloid like headline: "Both U-M and MSU basketball programs lack basketball fire."Regardless of the over the top headline, this column Sharp's knee-jerk, contrarian flame baiting at his very best. "Best" being a relative term, of course.Like moths to a flame, the column attracted your usual mouth-breathers. Namely Sparty haters, Wolverine bashers, and damn near everything in-between. Amazingly, I found a mild-mannered, reasoned post amid all the shit flinging. dtw456 came through with a comment both realistic and reasoned regarding the status of both programs...I wouldn't say both programs lack fire. There still is a flame burning for MSU, though not as intense as years previous. At UM, the fire is definitely out. It's no surprise that the fire at UM has been out ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - All bloggers are negative and "Real fans" support Inge
2008-03-06 22:10:00
The Brandon Inge story, and the fan reaction to it, refuses to go away. As much as everyone would like Inge to become a non-story, the MSM refuses to let it go.Inge isn't helping matters with his clumsy "I hate catching" and "I didn't mean I actually HATED catching" comments to the media. The more he talks, the the deeper he digs himself into a self-made hole.At Mlive today, Danny Knobler writes a very disjointed article about Inge. He touches on Inge's comments, many fans being upset while others are enthusiastic in their support, his playing center field, and where Jim Leyland would play the bipolar sounding Inge next. That's where I found the COTD. A commenter named huskytiger takes all those who think Inge needs to shut up and play to task, especially bloggers, by calling them "negative."The two previous comments point out that most bloggers tend to be negative. However, the fact that most fans who attend the games are supportive of Inge, as they should be. He has played his heart ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - Joey Blue Skies is looking for a job
2008-03-05 22:14:00
In a move totally expected if you've been a fan of any team Joey Harrington has played for, the Atlanta Falcons released Joey Blue Skies today. Please pardon me for a second, I need to say something...To all those Falcons fans who invaded TWFE with pitchforks and torches last August when I claimed Harrington would lead them nowhere but to the bottom of the standings, once again, I have to say, I TOLD YOU SO! I SOOOO DID! BUT WOULD YOU LISTEN? NOOOOOO! Thanks for putting up with the post jack. We now return to your regularly scheduled blog post.In comment thread to the Harrington article, baleedat asks a silly question.Anyone think he would have done better had he played for teams that didn't stink so bad?Dude, come on. Does this question really deserve an answer? In fact, you should turn the question around. Would the teams Joey played for hadn't have picked him up, would they have sucked less?In Detroit's case, definitely.Joey will be looking for his strawberries and champagnewhile wea ...

EVERYBODY PANIC!!! - The Tigers need setup men edition
2008-03-05 20:40:00
We are are only a couple of weeks into spring training, and the bullpen alarmists are already bleating. With the lack of anything truly compelling to write, save for the latest "I WANNA PLAY 3RD!" and "I DIDN'T ACTUALLY SAY I "HATED" CATCHING!"whine from Brandon Inge, columnists are looking directly at the Tigers' only (possible) Achilles heel, the lack of healthy setup men.Lynn Henning is the leading MSM Chicken Little, not penning just one article in the News bemoaning the bullpen today, but two! The sky is falling 3+ weeks before opening day? According to Henning, Hells yeah! Take cover! Everyone DUCK!Leyland conceded Tuesday that even "with a healthy Rodney," the team still probably is in the market for one new relief pitcher when the team heads north at the end of this month. But, again, that assumes Rodney will be ready. If not, the Tigers will be looking for at least two back-end relievers. And that's a potentially tough search when the bullpen hasn't yet found a single front-runn ...

Death, taxes, change ups and beat writers
2008-03-04 19:58:00
We all know there's 2 certainties in life: death and taxes. We can add another to the list. Namely, Jeremy Bonderman's working on a change up.We get the same story every season, usually early in spring training. Bonderman has a good outing in an exhibition game, throws a couple of changes for strikes, and the MSM breaks out one of their numerous "evergreens." If Bonderman could develop a change, he'd be unhittable/take the next step/win 20 games/be an All-Star/become an ace/cure cancer. We all know, as ancient Paul Harvey says, the rest of the story.Bonderman goes into the regular season hoping to use 3 pitches, throws the change up for a couple of games, doesn't like the results, falls back on his 2 money pitches, the fastball and slider, shows flashes of greatness, blows up in the 1st inning several times, and ultimately disappoints.Much like the seeing first robin, or daylight savings time kicking in, even with snow in the air here in Michigan, you know spring is here when one of the ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - Pondering Brandon Inge and beer volcanoes
2008-03-04 17:29:00
The Tigers' bullpen is still in need of healthy arms. The latest bad news regarding the Tigers' Achilles heel is about Matt Mantei's shoulder. It's sore, derailing his comeback, and likely ending his career for a second time. This has fans looking for bullpen alternatives. With Brandon Inge whining more than a Boston fan after the Sox lose to the Yankees, fans are coming up with their own Inge trades to add set up men to the Tigers' pen. One fan being a Freep commenter named MaggsMiggyMoney, who comes up with a dream solution...Trade Inge for 2 relievers, which is exactly what we need, and I don't mean a bunch of who's who of relievers I actually want to hear some names that are well known. The logic is so flawed in this comment, I don't know where to start. This MaggsMiggyMoney character thinks Inge can be traded for not just one, but TWO relievers? For that matter, MaggsMiggyMoney thinks Inge is worth not just one NAME reliever, but two NAME relievers? Two NAME relievers for a .240 hit ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the the day - I want the Lions to fail, and fail miserably
2008-02-29 21:00:00
As much as I search stories about the other teams in town for the COTD, nothing compares to the Detroit Lions. Whatever it is about the NFL, or the Lions in particular, any story pertaining to Detroit's not so legendary franchise brings out commenters in droves.Though there are plenty of Lions commenters who make sense, there are just as many commenters who are loopy as all Hell. Why that is, to be honest, I have no explanation.Surprisingly, I was able to find some wheat in the chaff. In a Mlive article about former Lions backup QB, the immortal J.T. O'Sullivan, joining his mentor, Mike Martz, in San Francisco, jakemister says what many fans of the Lions find themselves hoping and praying for on a daily basis. That Matt Millen, Rod Marinelli, and the rest of the bumbling idiots in the Lions' front office make so many mistakes, screw up so badly, that the Fords will have no choice but to fire anyone and everyone. Just blow the God damn thing up...these guys are just laughable as footb ...

Need more proof Detroit's sports columnists blow? Just ask the Associated Press Sports Editors
2008-02-28 21:25:00
A tip o' the hat goes to The Big Lead for pointing me in the direction of the Associated Press Sports Editors' writing and section contests. These are awards given to the best newspaper sports sections and sports writers in the country. You'd think an important media market like Detroit would do well in such a competition. Detroit ranks as the 11th largest market in the US. In an era where 2 competing papers are becoming a rarity around the country, Detroit has 2 dailies with a full compliment of columnists. There's 4 pro teams and 2 Big 10 schools to cover. So wouldn't you expect Detroit based columnists to win some writing awards?Yet when judged by their peers, not a single columnist from the Free Press or News received a mention. Most notably missing was the Little Fella, the Freep's star columnist, who used to win sports writing awards like so many Cracker Jacks prizes. It's to be expected when your column takes a backseat to TV appearances, a radio show, screen writing, and sappy ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the the day - Anyone but Lilja
2008-02-28 19:17:00
In a Freep piece about the Red Wings' injury depleted defense, the arrival of Brad Stuart, and the return of Niklas Kronwall, a spirited debate broke out in the comment thread. When the top 4 defensemen return to health, along with the addition of Stuart, the question becomes which of the young defensemen will be left out of the 3rd pairing? The consensus answer? Anyone but Andreas Lilja. A commenter named oregonwingsfan echoes what most Wings fans are thinking...Who is in the future? Meech is the D-man of the future for Wings. To me, he has out played Lebda. I have been very impressed with his pin point passing and decision making. He is like a young Rafalski, he can certainly develop into a guy who can run the PP for the Wings. Lebda hit his ceiling a year or so ago and he is what he is now. I agree with other poster here...keep Quincey and Meech, work them in the balance of the regular season and expect them to be on roster next year. The excellent play of Derek Meech Tuesday night in ...

Drew Sharp should stick to writing about sports he hates, rather than those he ignores
2008-02-28 05:20:00
The Freep's resident hack, hatchet man Drew Sharp, normally rips on the Big 10, and the 3 of the 4 pro teams in town. Sharp is oblivious to the existence of Red Wings. Well, he was oblivious till today. For some reason, Sharp decided to unsheave his knives to go after Ken Holland and the Red Wings. At the NHL trade deadline, the Red Wings GM acquired Brad Stuart, a top 4 defenseman from the L.A. Kings, for future 2nd and 4th round picks. Holland filled a huge need, considering their dire injury situation at the blue line. If you ask any Red Wings fan, including myself, landing Stuart is not a bad day's work. He's a very nice haul for not having to give up a 1st round pick, or one of their young players. What more did Sharp expect Holland to do? But you can color the dull one unimpressed. But the Wings missed an opportunity Tuesday, considering the asking price for some of the guys moved. The Wings should have done more than merely securing Stuart.Sharp fails to note that there is what I l ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the the day - Enough of the "Tampa Two" BS
2008-02-27 18:45:00
Over at Mlive, today the Killer tells us the Lions are meeting with a pair of free agents, tackle L.J. Shelton and safety Dwight Smith. Smith would fill a need at right tackle, but Smith (Who, by the way, is a former Buccaneer. Why don't we just call the Detroit Lions the North Tampa Bucs?) is a safety, where the Lions seem intent on adding someone every year.First, Kenoy Kennedy was signed to a big free agent contract in 2005. In 2006, Daniel Bullocks was drafted in the 2nd round. Last year, Gerald Alexander was drafted...In the 2nd round. Now they want to sign ANOTHER safety? In the comments, tommy2ksi echoes my feelings, and got a laugh out of me, in regard to the Detroit Lions flavor of the month defense, the "Tampa Two."Dwight Smith is perfect for the Tampa two........*rolls eyes*No damn kidding. That's all we ever hear when the Lions are interested in a defender, "He fits the Tampa Two." "He's perfect for the Tampa Two." Tampa Two, Tampa Two, Tampa Two! Enough! How about they draf ...

10 questions: Shaun Rogers
2008-02-26 21:06:00
With Shaun Rogers not long for Detroit, and me wanting to exhaust my inventory of fat jokes, I thought it would be a good time for another round of "10 questions."We soon won't have Rogers to roll around anymore...Much as I did with both the moron and Lions QB coach Scott Loeffler, I ask the questions we all want to hear answers to, but the MSM refuses to ask.1. You're being paid millions of dollars a year to be in a semblance of shape. A shape other than cylindrical. Was it that hard to push yourself away from the dinner table? For that matter, the lunch and breakfast tables?2. If I placed a bet claiming you weighed more than 425 pounds, would I win?3. Let's say you are playing in the thin air of Denver. How deep in the game would you get before having to come out for a breather? By the way, the over/under is 2 plays.4. Continuing in that vein, how many defensive series would you have to sit out in order to catch your breath? In case you were wondering, the over/under is 4.5. I have t ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - Fat jokes are funny
2008-02-26 18:30:00
The Freep headline says it all regarding Shaun Rogers future with the Lions. He doesn't have one...Shaun Rogers' agent: 'I have never heard him so excited' about possible trade'As you might guess, in the comments to the article, fans of the worst run franchise in professional sports are more than happy to say "Don't let the door hit you on your fat ass on the way out!" In other words, fat jokes about Bigger Baby abound.I hope you drive a flatbed because thats about the only vehicle that will not break under the pressure of his fat buttRogers hasn't been this excited since he downed that 134-lb. cheeseburger last weekend in Southgate.Shaun Rogers is a vastly overrated fat tub of goo.I wonder if Rogers gets more excited about a possible trade or plate full of buffalo wings? Is that a ham under Shaun's arm in that picture?Burger King owners in Denver are celebrating as I type...It's safe to say Lions fans are just a tad bitter over Shaun Rogers inability to stay on the field due to is inab ...

Detroit fishwrap comment of the day - Overreact much?
2008-02-25 17:48:00
One of my favorite types of forum commenter are the those who want to waive/trade/cut/bench damn near an entire team, never mind any extenuating circumstances or a team's overall record. One such fruit loop is a Freep poster calling himself baseball. In an article about Red Wings' GM Ken Holland investigating different trade deadline scenarios, and also negotiating a contract extension for Dan Cleary, this "baseball" character would prefer it if Holland...blew the whole team up?To Ken Holland: Dont sign McCarty and Federov, the Wings are not having an old timers game at JLA just before the playoffs......release Maltby and Draper today.....they are doing absolutely nothing to help the Wings and havent been for some time......tell Hasek to hang onto this stick, tape or wire it to his stick hand......find out why Chris Osgood cannot stop a beach ball on some nights and find out why Huder, Fillipula, Datsuk and Zeetterburg cant take the very rough play. Chris Pronger will bullwhack those gu ...

If today's column is any indication, Jerry Green should keep writing about dead guys
2008-02-24 23:30:00
If the Detroit News' resident curmudgeon Jerry Green ever wondered why he's been marginalized to the point of having a web only column on Sundays, today's tour de force of craposity explains why.We all know the only reason Green is still employed is so he can keep the silly streak of attending every Super Bowl alive. If he continues to churn out tripe that DEFENDS Matt Millen, as he did today, he can expect to stay home for Super Bowl XLIII.In my half-century plus of viewing and writing about games and players in Michigan, no other individual has been bashed and vilified with the intensity and venom as Matt Millen.Perhaps, I am the outrageous one. I still admire Matt Millen for his guts and his eloquence. I am, I believe, the sole surviving defender of Matt Millen in Detroit media. There is this old-fashioned belief that character counts, that honesty matters -- and when character and honesty and principle are parts of an individual's makeup -- I don't give much of a hoot about the per ...
