Yesterday, the Lions announced the hiring of ex-Michigan Wolverines QB coach Scot Loeffler to coach QB's in Detroit. Leoffler is known as a fast rising young coach, as mentioned in Larry Lage's AP article...Loeffler spent six years as an assistant at Michigan, working with Chad Henne as he threw for a school-record-tying 25 touchdowns as a freshman in 2004. He also coached John Navarre, who was named to the All-Big Ten team in 2003, when the Wolverines won the conference championship.Loeffler's Michigan bio also hypes the fact that he coached several NFL QB's, including Tom Brady.After graduating, Loeffler was a graduate assistant coach (1998-99) for the Wolverines. That person was wondering "What was he thinking?"Honestly, I have the same thought after EVERY Parker column. But his missive in today's News is Parker at his worst.Today, the functionally retarded one carries the torch for Chris Webber returning to the Pistons.If the Pistons can get a deal done -- and that would take clearing a roster spot -- Webber will be a welcome addition to the team, just as he was around this time a year ago.It's interesting to note that Parker has no quotes from the Pistons, or from Webber. OK, I'll admit that the headline is a bit hyperbolic. Sure, Robertson is the 5th starter for the Tigers, but he's a middle of the rotation guy on many lesser teams.Actually, I'm quite happy with the Tigers locking up Mr. Gum Time at $21 million total for 3 years. Considering the high price and scarcity of major league quality starting pitching, the contract is a relative steal.Ricky Vaughn glasses and Goose Gossage facial hair?That's worth a few million in itself...A pitcher with Robertson's bulldog tendencies is a plus in any rotation. Detroit Pistons: The Pistons finished off a rough, 4 games in 5 days, swing through Texas, then to parts east, ending in an ugly loss in New York Sunday night.Detroit Bad Boys puts into words what certain sports talk radio hosts couldn't, that it was just "one of those games."Maybe the team was caught looking past the Knicks, or maybe the dreaded “complacency” bug reared it’s ugly head. Or maybe, and this is the most likely scenario, the team simply entered the game on fumes and ran out of gas early. It was their fourth game in five nights, and for whatever it’s worthy their arrival to NYC on Saturday night/Sunday morning was pushed back when the Bobcats game went into overtime.If the rest of us mortals had to keep the insane travel schedules of NBA teams, we'd be running on fumes after 1 game, let alone 4. Mid-day hosts Scott Anderson and Doug Karsh are talking Pistons half assed, with only one host (Karsh) making sense, but at least they're talking Pistons.What got me going was the clueless Anderson crucifying the Pistons for their admittedly ugly, but ultimately inconsequential, loss to the Knicks Sunday night. Fans of WVU have been hollerin' up a storm since Rich Rodriguez left, for a better job, mind you, at the University of Michigan. Though he left the school a much better place, WVU fans have felt the need to belittle his accomplishments.Some of the anger was warranted, I'll give them that. It's never a smooth transition when any coach leaves a program. It's going to be messy. At this point, with both schools having moved on with their new head coaches, don't ya'll think enough is enough? As I'm in a NFL mood, (I mean, who isn't? It's the best football weekend of the year!) and it's probably the last time I'll have reason to being the SOB's up till we get closer to the draft, or the incommunicado, long in-hiding, Matt Millen speaks, I'm going to touch on the Lions.I've spent the past day and a half watching the NFL conference semi-finals. It's been a nice weekend of chilling out, and enjoying, for the most part, well played football by 8 good to great teams. (You make it this far into the playoffs, even in today's parity filled NFL, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and call all the conference semi-finalists good. Obviously the Patriots are on another level altogether...)I realized something as the Giants' Armani Toomer was running down the sidelines for a touchdown against the Cowboys at Texas Stadium.It's been 16 years since we've seen the Lions play in such an important game. 16 years?! In his Freep blog, WDFN's Jamie Sameulson reveals "What I would say to Lions president Matt Millen."If I had a sit down with Millen, I’d probably ask him why his coaching and personnel decisions always seem to be a departure from his overriding philosophy of football. He always struck me as a mean and potatoes football man as a player, yet has been obsessed with the offensive coach or player as a front office man. It was an interesting night for the Detroit teams. The Wings lost to the Wild in a shootout, and the Pistons beat the Spurs on the 2nd game of a back to back.A very nice win for the Pistons, and a nice comeback for the Red Wings to gain a point, after being down 4-2. (Even though the Wings gave up the tying goal with under a minute left in the game)But did they mean much in the big scheme of things? They are still in 1st place in their respective divisions, their playoff races are moot, and it's the middle of January! So no, the wins meant squat. Which is why I'm not upset by Chris Osgood allowing 5 goals, or overly excited by the Pistons beating one of the best teams in the west. Well, I did get worked up over one thing, specifically in regard to the Pistons...What means more in mid Janurary?
