The Wayne Fontes Experience
The Wayne Fontes Experience is a weblog featuring my uninformed, snarky, and completely biased blathering on Detroit sports. You may see the occasional pop culture rant and some lame attempts at humor, but mostly sports. I do ask readers to remember one thing..."In Detroit, you're with us, or we hate you."

Above the Fold - Columnists say the darnedest things
2008-01-11 20:15:00
It's been a long while since I took a tour around the fishwrap columnists in town, and today's as good a day as any to see what's on the minds of the supposed best and brightest of the MSM. Of course, "best and brightest" being a relative term, as we are talking about the MSM. A 20 watt bulb is brighter than some of the writers in Detroit.Let's start with the Detroit News. No Rob Parker today? We're off to one Hell of a good start! With my daily, cleansing diss of Parker that out of the way, Mike O'Hara and Vartan Kupelian lead with the Tiger Woods "lynching" kerfuffle, and the suspension of Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman. It's been commented/discussed/dissected to death on the web earlier this week, but with the dailies being a day late, and millions of dollars short, O'Hara and Kupelian get around to covering it today...Tilghman played college golf at Duke. She's a smart lady who said a dumb thing. It's another example of a broadcaster looking for something dramatic to say when it isn' ...

The Terrelle Pryor saga continues. The latest reports are stating that Pryor will be making his recruiting visits with of all people, former EMU Huron Eagle, and Detroit Lion, Charlie Batch. My thoughts? Huh? Charlie Batch?Michigan best be careful, Charlie could push Pryor towards his alma mater, 10 minutes down the road from the Big House. Batch can show Pryor where he spent 6 years in front of all 500 of EMU's football fans at Rynearson Stadium, and all the hot spots in Ypsilanti!Poor EMU, the college where those that can't, learn to teach, and downtrodden Ypsi, the poor, ignored, funny named little brother to Ann Arbor...Mliver tulsatom is more concerned about tOSU snagging Pryor than EMU.Looks like Pryor is still holding his cards close to the vest. I hope he winds up with U-M and not Coach Sweater Vest.As do all Michigan fans, tulsatom. But he's mistaken in one thing about the Vest. His name is actually "Coach CheatyPants McSweaterVest." (Hey, any opportunity I have to post "Cheaty ...
Couldn't have happened to a nicer goalie
2008-01-10 21:19:00
No puck bunny jokes today. Just kudos to a long underrated goalie who is finally getting his just desserts. After agreeing to a three-year, $4.5-million extension on Wednesday, Osgood found out Thursday he had been chosen to represent the Wings in the All-Star Game in Atlanta on Jan. 27.Osgood joins teammates Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom on the Western Conference roster.Chis Osgood was once nothing more than an afterthought. No one in their right mind could have envisioned an all-star berth and a long term contract when he signed on to be the Red Wings backup goaltender a year and a half ago. It's an amazing turnaround for a goalie considered to have been carried by a great Red Wings team to win the 97-98 Stanley Cup. A goalie who was unceremoniously sent packing after the 2001 season, to bounce around the league with the Isles and Blues for 4 seasons. Osgood's career was going nowhere but down when the Wings took a flyer on Osgood last season, mostly due to the ...
Above the Fold - A spin around the Detroit sports talk radio dial
2008-01-10 20:07:00
If you are a Detroit sports junkie, like myself, you tend to listen to a ton of local sports talk radio. (I'm still saving my pennies towards a satellite radio) Which means you listen to both all-sports stations in town, WDFN and WKRK/WXYT. Both stations have been somewhat in flux, thanks to the massive economic downturn we are experiencing in the D.There have been firings, such as the elimination of DFN's morning show, Jamie and Brady, and the not very amicable parting between KRK and Deminski and Doyle. Then the rehiring of 1/2 of DFN's morning show, Jamie Samuelson, now going solo. There's also the scheduling of odd shows that don't fit a sports format, specifically KRK's unlistenable Motor City Mornings, which has a TMZ, Perez Hilton, lowest common denominator sensibility to it. Not exactly something that appeals to the 25-54 male demo, which I'll still a member of for quite some time.Things are getting even more interesting in the competition between the 2 stations. A post on The ...

Always in search of entertainment, I wandered into the Mlive's Pistons section in hopes of a COTD. Not much there in quantity. But in COTD quality? I got lucky...In the recap for last night's Dallas loss, Mliver MontagueBase thinks the Pistons are...on a downhill spiral?I feel wierd about the Detroit Pistons this year. I feel like they are losing talent every year, and that its going to go down and down each year, until they have to rebuild an entire new team.Has MontagueBase even seen the 07-08 Pistons? Dude, they actually have a bench this season! A bench with impressive looking young players! Shocking, I know. But it's true! Last night's Dallas blowout being an aberration, Detroit has gotten a very nice (and long overdue) boost this season from the bench, especially from Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo, Jason Maxiell and Jarvis Hayes. On draft night, I ripped Joe Dumars for drafting Stuckey and Affalo. Which goes to show why I'm a lowly blogger, and not running a NBA team... I think m ...
The Downriver puck bunnies are squealing with joy today!
2008-01-09 22:08:00
You could hear the orgasmic squeals of Red Wings puck bunny delight all around Detroit today, especially around unquestioned puck bunny central, the area Steve Perry called "South Detroit," in Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," Downriver. Why are the big haired, tight jeaned, Draper/Maltby/Osgood sweater wearing puck bunnies in seventh heaven? The Wings extended the contract, in puck bunny parlance, of the oh so cute, the just dreamy Ozzie!Talks finally settled on a three-year extension, announced today by the team. It's a smart move by both sides - (Chris) Osgood loves it here in Detroit (his wife is from the area, and they live here during the off-season) and for the Wings, this brings them security in goal through 2010-11.Smart indeed. They've locked in Osgood long term, who's playing at an all-star, Vezina trophy winning, level. The Wings have also covered their asses in a few ways.First, I'm sure this season will be the last in Detroit for the crazy ass Czech, Dominik Hasek. Osgood ...

Above the Fold - Let's talk Tigers
2008-01-09 19:40:00
Anyone else getting the baseball itch? We're in the middle of a January thaw in SE MI, with the mild temps and sunny skies today, it looks and feels like baseball weather. April baseball weather, but that's fine by me.One Tiger blogger who has the itch is Sam at Roar of the Tigers. She's seen pictures of Tigers working out in Florida on Motownsports.com, and has gone off the deep end. Just what were Sam's thoughts?Squeeeee! That's a fan who needs some Tigers baseball, stat!Ian's not making funny noises at Bless You Boys, but he does point out the MSM, in this case, Buster Olney of the evil 4 letter, has chosen their season long storyline for the 2008 Detroit Tigers. They'll hit a ton, but will the pitching hold up?So we can see the storyline that people are forming about the Tigers approximately six weeks away from the beginning of Spring Training. Conventional wisdom says they're going to score many, many runs with one of the best lineups we've ever seen. But that pitching staff has ...

What's happened to Michigan basketball? Everything...
2008-01-09 17:45:00
I was able to watch a fair amount of the Michigan basketball team getting their asses kicked by the Hoosiers 78-64 on the 4 letter last night, in a game that was even worse than the 14 point spread would have you think. It was another in a series of embarrassing losses for new coach John Beilein. With a piss poor W-L record of 4-11, they'll be damn lucky to win 10 games this season. Today, on talk radio, in the fishwraps, and on the internets, people are beginning to ask, "What's happened to Michigan basketball?"Three things.1. 10 years of Brian Ellerbe, then Tommy Amaker, running the Wolverine program into the ground.2. After the "Ed Martin Scandal," the Michigan Mafia is happy with hoops being a second class sport, just keeping their nose clean is fine and dandy.3. Tom Izzo. It's beyond obvious that Amaker left the cupboards bare. The Wolverines have only a handful of major conference players, with the remainder of the team being made up with kids who should be playing at a much small ...

Pickings are getting a mite slim at Mlive. It seems that, for the most part, football is what powers the insanity of their commenters. I may have to open up COTD to the Freep commenters as well. I hope it doesn't come to that, as the bile, racism, and trolling are of such a high level, I feel the need to take a scalding hot shower to cleanse the slime and stench off of myself.Mlive commenters just seem a little crazy, but harmless. On the other hand, the odds are good that the legitimately scary Freep commenters are being tracked by the FBI, and quite possibly on their most wanted list.Still, there is material to be found at Mlive. Their loopy commenters had to throw in their 2 cents on the Mike Martz to the San Francisco 49ers story. One being IamMillen, who warns niners fans that Martz's "genius" is overrated.i am very sorry for all them 49ers fans...you think you got an offensive guru?,all you got was a huge ass ego who's too stubborn to change any problemsPeople might call him and o ...
More proof that the MSM are clueless bastards
2008-01-08 21:22:00
As this seems to be turning into bash the media day at TWFE (Thinking about it, it's always bash the media day at TWFE!), I've just seen their latest crime committed against humanity. The baseball hall of fame vote. The hall of fame vote always shows the BBWAA at their most biased. What was the most egregious example of their journalistic inbreeding? The clueless, elitist, dumbass, press box freeloading, ink stained know-nothings at the BBWAA gave Alan Trammell a whole 18.2 percent of the vote. 18.2%? You're kidding me!If there is one thing that gets me absolutely and irrationally furious as a long time fan of Detroit sports, it's the incomprehensible dissing of Trammell and Lou Whitaker by the voters. They can't get a fucking sniff, yet the Ozzie Smith easily backflipped his good field, no-hit ass all the way into the hall of fame. Would any of you traded Trammell straight up for Smith? Of course not. The Tigers would have been getting bent over in such a deal. 'nuff said...The fact th ...

Next season could get quite ugly, which is something most his acolytes will agree upon. Save for one steadfast commenter...CHIEFGER139 isn't worried. Not at all. Because CHIEFGER139 believes the Lions are in good hands.DONT WORRY!!even if things start to go bad early in the season next year, millen will once again step in and help marenalli save the season-you can count on it, you all critise, including the media, but they have no idea on what moves millen is making behind the scenes. im sure he had a 3 year plan with marenalli and next year it all comes together and they win the superbowl just like vermeil did it with the rams, sure they lost martz but they retained his genius just so they can win the superbowl next year.remember martz was in on that rams super ...

...If I'm rooting for Ohio State to kick LSU, and SEC by proxy, ass?I'm of the mind that what's good for the Big 10, is good for Michigan and Michigan State. Winning the national title is definitely in the conference's best interest. As a life long Big 10 fan, I can't help myself. Why all the fuss over "American Gladiators?" Oh yeah, I'm old...
2008-01-07 22:08:00
I've read the mass hysteria that came over the blogosphere this weekend with the return of "American Gladiators." That hysteria made me feel God damn old...As you might guess, I didn't watch the original incarnation, the version that it seems waaaay too many sports bloggers watched in their formative years. Personally, I was busy with other things. A job, a marriage, a house, drinking. You know, adult stuff. I wasn't in the AG demographic, thank God.For example, at One More Dying Quail, I read that OMDQ learned who Larry Czonka was by watching AG. Fuck, am I that old? Christ, I watched Larry Czonka play for the Dolphins, in the WFL, and with the Giants. I thought his appearing on AG was the bottom of the barrel for a once great running back.My only blurry memories of the original AG was that it was usually on Saturday mornings, when I was either working, or nursing a hangover. Often, I was doing both...I figured I should see what the fuss was all about, so I tuned in to see what was up ...

2008-01-07 20:56:00
Terry Foster writes of Lions fans venting their frustrations in today's Detroit News. Fans have good reason to be upset, and the pair of Lions fans Foster interviews have taken to differing ways of showing their unhappiness. One fan has said enough is enough, and is giving up their season tickets. That makes sense. Why continue to throw good money after bad? Why make yourself miserable every Sunday? That's putting your money where your mouth is, and not putting it in the wallet of William Clay Ford. (Not that he cares) That I can get behind.Another fan Foster talks to has gone all Don Quixote, and is tilting at windmills posted an online petition calling for Ford to ax Matt Millen. Here's the introduction to the "Fire Millen" petition...We as Lions fans have dealt with a terrible team for 7 years to long. Matt Millen has shown no signs of putting together a team that can compete on Sundays. The Detroit Lions are an embarrassment to the state of Michigan let alone the NFL and it needs to ...

Above the Fold - Weekend in review
2008-01-07 19:49:00
I'm trying something new with today's "Above the Fold." Every Monday I'm going to look back at the weekend, taking a look at each local team. Let's see how it goes... Detroit Pistons:The Pistons lost their rematch with the Boston Celtics Saturday night, 92-85.. From all reports, the Celtics treated the matchup like game 7 of a playoff series, while the Pistons claimed they treated it as just another game. Considering Detroit's mistake filled 4th quarter, they actually treated the game like last season's game 6 against the Cavaliers. As Nat does after every game, Need4 Sheed breaks out the bullet points. One being Flip Saunders odd non-use of Jason Maxiell, who was dominant in the 1st half. And I agree, Garnett was not fouled...I love McDyess, but he was a dud last night and Maxiell was HOT. Please tell me why Flip didn't ride the hot hand. We know the players do it on the floor, why didn't our coach? It was Jason who sparked the Pistons to a 17-0 run in the first. He finished with 13 p ...

With no new content from the Killer, I had to go to Mlive's Wolverines coverage to find today's COTD.In an AP wire article that tells us that Rich Rodriguez has hired WVU's entire strength and conditioning staff (Which is a VERY good thing, considering Michigan's out of date philosophies in regard to S&C), a few fans chime in with their thoughts on the future of the Wolverines. It being Mlive, those thoughts tend to be s tad scrambled...One such garbled fan is Silvertitus, who states the blantantly obvious in a rather roundabout way.RR should have a better record than Coach Lloyd Carr. The Big Ten and Michigan is different from WVU. This is a poor hire if RR will be more mediocre than Lloyd and still loses to OSU and in bowl games.Let's see if we can break this comment down...Coach Rod might win more than Lloyd. The Big 10 and Michigan are different than the Big East and WVU. If Coach Rod loses both the tOSU and bowl games, he might not be a good hire.I guess Silvertitus is saying ...
Memo to Jerry Green: I'm not an "anonymous blogger." I'm not a "wannabe journalist." You are still irrelevant
2008-01-06 20:46:00
The Detroit News' semi-retired crank of a columnist, Jerry Green, is in a contemplative mood today over over something I wrote 6 weeks ago. He vents his aged, liver spotted spleen over yours truly in today's edition. (A tip o' the cap goes to Billfer, who let me know I was in Green's shaky cross hairs.)He doesn't reference me by name, but calls me an "anonymous blogger," and "a wanna-be journalist" in response to what was literally a throwaway line in one of my ""Above the Fold" link dumps...While wandering through the Internet a week or so ago, I happened upon a blog by a wanna-be journalist that caught my attention. Or kicked me where it hurt. The Web site has vaporized in my computer, but the essence of the guy's opinionated statement is imperishable."Jerry Green is The News' curmudgeon. He writes only about dead people."My initial reaction was that the blogger was another of those anonymous fools without sufficient gumption to identify himself and take the heat. Then I realized that ...

Ooooo...Happy Anniversary, Happy Anniversary,Happy Anniversary, Haaappy Anniversary!Yesterday was the 2nd anniversary of The Wayne Fontes Experience! Jeez, Al. Hell, I've always had trouble remembering dates, just ask my ex-wife...My first post was January 3rd, 2006. At the time, I didn't even know what this blog was going to be. I knew that I would write a little about sports, but I didn't think it would become totally sports-centric. It just sort of evolved into a Detroit sport blog over the first couple months. Good thing, as who would want to know my thoughts on what crapola I watched the night before, right?I honestly didn't expect TWFE to be alive, well, and doing better than ever 2 years later. Let alone people actually reading it! I'm thrilled that my little corner of the internets is still growing by leaps and bounds.So...Here's to another year of MSM bashing, ESPN hating, Rob Parker baiting, front office bitching, giving praise where praise is due, questioning otherwise, and ...
Can a team be too good?
2008-01-04 23:05:00
Why do I ask? Because the Red Wings and Pistons have made their regular seasons irrelevant. As both teams currently stand, and will likely remain, there is absolutely no drama to their regular seasons. None whatsoever. The playoffs are a done deal. A dead, solid lock. The only question left is their playoff seeding. Even that is somewhat moot, as home court/ice, for at least the first couple of rounds, is all but assured.Save for the occasional "big" game, such as tomorrow's battle of the eastern conference titans, Pistons vs. Celtics, there has been very little excitement regarding their achievments. The Red Wings and Pistons are machines, chewing up and spitting out the opposition, leaving destruction in their wake.I love that they are great teams. I cannot wait for the playoffs! But...You knew there was a "but" coming, didn't you?The regular season has become a snore.I know I shouldn't feel this way, as watching a team perform at the peak of their abilities is special. Seeing them b ...

No theme in "Above the Fold" today, just some recent Detroit blogosphere links I found interesting...Need 4 Sheed has great video of 'Sheed's favorite "Gangsta," new big man Primoz Brezec, diving into the Pistons bench for a loose ball. The sight of watching Pistons scatter, desperately trying to avoid becoming Brezrc road kill, is hysterical!Lionbacker gives out the Detroit Lions final grades. As you might expect, they ain't pretty. If the Lions were in elementary school, they'd be held back, or sent to special ed.Gregg Henson passes along the news that former WDFN morning man, Greg Brady, has scored a new sports talk gig co-hosting an afternoon drive time show in Toronto. Cheap Channel's, and Detroit's, loss is Toronto's gain. Mlive comment of the day - Osgood is the man?
2008-01-04 18:59:00
Even though I'm drawn to the unintentional comedy of the Mlive Lions commenters like a moth to a flame, the constant infighting and trolling gets tiresome. There's a breaking point when it comes to "Lions suck!" and "You aren't a true fan!" I think I've reached it.So I checked out the non-football sections, where the commenting isn't as frequent or loopy, but a tad more lucid. Not that being a tad more lucid than Killer's acolytes is saying all that much...In the Red Wings section of Mlive, Kahn grades out the team. As you might guess, the Wings grade out damn well. But one poster takes issue with the goaltending, as we've come to call it, as there always seems to be one, "situation."dennisdw is an unabashed Ozzie fan, and wants Hasek to hit the bricks...When it comes to the goaltender situation they need to put Hasek out to pasture. The guy has always been a liability with his early flopping and tendency to wander out of the net. Osgood needs to be Detroit's number 1 guy like he used ...
A plea to the NFL football Gods: We're sorry!
2008-01-03 23:53:00
How did we piss off the NFL football Gods so badly that they saddled us with the most dysfunctional organization on the face of the planet? What have we done as a fanbase in the past to deserve the Detroit Lions? Our fan forefathers must have done something! But what? What was so bad that caused Detroit to the get the butt end of football's ugly stick? Was it booing Bobby Layne? Fans who preferred Tobin Rote over Layne? Throwing snowballs at Lions coach George Wilson? Did Lions fans become too cocky after winning 3 NFL championships in the 50's? Something happened in the late 50's-early 60's that jinxed the Lions, and allowed the William Clay Ford era to begin...And never, ever end. Then again, we modern day fans may not be blameless. Why do we deserve the worst general manager in the history of sports, Matt Millen, to be inflicted upon us? Did we take Barry Sanders for granted? Cheer when Scott Mitchell was injured? Make fun of Bobby Ross' verbal outbursts? What did we do?! Why are we sin ...

Above the Fold - Where's the love?
2008-01-03 20:50:00
The Pistons and Red Wings are stormtrooping through their respective conferences. To beat into the ground one of my all time favorite movie quotes, they are here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and they're all out of bubble gum.The Pistons and Red Wings are kicking an amazing amount of ass.The Red Wings have reached the 30 win mark faster than any team in their storied history. They, by far, have the best record in the NHL. For all intents and purposes, the Red Wings have all but locked up no worse than a 3 seed in the playoffs. Last night, Detroit played the team with the 2nd best record in the west, the Dallas Stars. In what was supposed to be a battle of west titans, the Wings beat them handily 4-1, extending their lead for the west's best record to 13(!) points. With their easy win over the Wizards last night, the Pistons have won 10 games in a row. They have turned the NBA's Eastern Conference into a 2 team race. That other team, one that is getting heaps of love from the nationa ...

2008 is the "Year of the rat." I had no idea the Chinese knew of Matt Millen!
2008-01-03 03:15:00
If you go by the Chinese zodiac*, 2008 is the "Year of the Rat." Quite fitting in the context of sports, especially the Detroit Lions.Notice the rat-like features? The beady eyes? The whisker-like 'stache? That all screams "RAT!"When Matt Millen was hired many painful years ago, he was adamant that "Every team needs a rat." Turns out he wasn't talking about adding talented head cases to the roster, much like the championship Oakland Raiders he played for. Millen was talking about himself.Let's look at the many definitions for "rat.""A person who is deemed to be despicable or contemptible."That fits the incompetent buffoon running the Lions to a T."A person who abandons or betrays his or her party or associates, especially in a time of trouble."Considering the coaching changes, that speaks for itself..."A scoundrel"Sounds like the clueless boob to me!"To turn informer; squeal"You got to believe he says whatever Ford wants to hear. The long rumored firing of pass happy super genius offensive guru Mike Martz was made official this afternoon.Did Martz deserve to get the ziggy? Let's look his "Accomplishments."3 games of 9 rushing attempts or less.31st overall in the NFL in rushing yards. The 2nd overall pick of the NFL draft being the number 4 receiver for much of the season.Despite the pass happy antics, no receiver had a 1000 yards season. His hand picked QB threw for more than 4000 yards, yet had more interceptions than TD's.Failed to develop a legit backup QB.His QB's lead the league in being sacked. So to answer my question...Hell yes! Martz deserved to be sent packing. His tenure was a complete failure. He's not the only coach who has completely failed, but he's the only coach to be sacrificed by Rod Marinelli, in an attempt to appease Matt Millen, who is attempting to appease William Clay Ford, who, for all accounts, couldn't give two shits.Martz brought much of this upon himself. Above the Fold - Lloyd walks off into the sunset
2008-01-02 21:00:00
The Michigan Wolverines I expected to see this season finally showed up in Orlando on New Years Day. For a multitude of reasons, be it injuries, 19th century game plans, it being Lloyd Carr's last season, we never got to see what the Wolverines could really do.We saw what might have been in the Capital One Bowl, as Michigan beat a very good Florida Gators team, led by a Heisman Trophy winning Tim Tebow. They manhandled the Gators in the trenches, and showed that Michigan is just a fast as a vaunted SEC school. It was a season ending victory that was desperately needed for the school, the fanbase, and especially Lloyd and his players. Now that we've seen that Michigan can still be MICHIGAN, you can only ask yourself, "What if?"What if Henne and Hart remained healthy? What if Carr and Mike Debord had removed the offensive shackles earlier in the season? What if the defense had been that aggressive all season? What if Captain Billy had never scheduled a game against Appalachian State, a game ...

Frustration in boiling over at Mlive today. Mike Martz was officially shitcanned by the Lions this afternoon. The announced replacements (Yes, it takes two heads to replace the oversized one of super genius Martz) O-line coach Jim Coletto and receivers coach Kippy Brown, have some Mliver's spitting mad.But sensible Mliver wallnoclaw says this was to be expected, as it fits the "Lions logic."Promote the O-line coach, 32nd team D, WR coach promoted... fits Lions logic. Meanwhile, Joe Cullen will probably be promoted within Lions logic and the Gatorade trainer will become assistant head coach. In a related move, Kitna and Millen have jobs for life. When you think about it, wallnoclaw is right on the money. It's a typical Lions move to promote a pair of underachieving position coaches to coordinator (Colleto) and assistant head coach (Kippy!).Why do I have the nagging feeling that the dumbed down version of the Martz offense the Lions plan on implementing is a clusterfuck in the making? ...
