The Wayne Fontes Experience
The Wayne Fontes Experience is a weblog featuring my uninformed, snarky, and completely biased blathering on Detroit sports. You may see the occasional pop culture rant and some lame attempts at humor, but mostly sports. I do ask readers to remember one thing..."In Detroit, you're with us, or we hate you."

Though the season has been essentially over for a few weeks, the final nail in the Lions coffin was just driven home.As of 11:45 PM, with the Vikings win over the Bears, the Detroit Lions playoff chances were removed from life support, and quietly passed away with little fanfare. There will be no services.

Answering the Detroit Lions week 15 "Burning questions"
2007-12-18 03:15:00
With only 2 weeks left in the season for the Lions, it appears that there are just as many questions now, if not more, than when the season started. In my ongoing attempt to answer those many questions, it time for another round of burning questions from the Detroit News' Mike O'Hara.Topics include...Well, let's just say the Lions have lots of issues, and several of them are brought up during the Q & A.Let's take issue, shall we?Burning questions from the Lions' 51-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday:Q: What does that performance say about the Lions?O'Hara: It doesn't say much -- only that the Lions lost to the Chargers. It isn't a one-game question. There are bigger questions and issues facing them than one loss.Big Al: It says...You know what's coming...They are who we thought they were! In other words, the Lions are a bad team. A bad team that has given up on the season, and to make matters worse, have also quit on their coach.Q: What are the issues?O ...

Above the Fold - Say yes to Michigan!
2007-12-17 20:04:00
There's two big stories in the D today, but one completely overshadows the other.Sunday was a tale of two football teams, teams heading in opposite directions. One appears to have a very bright future, thanks to their hiring one of the best young coaches in the business. The other? Well, their future looks as bleak as bleak can be, thanks to another disturbing, embarrassing, fiasco of a loss. After a month of fans being on the verge of hysteria, Michigan soothed the savage beast known as the Michigan Mafia, by officially sealing the deal with WVU's Rich Rodriguez. The other story, that's been thankfully pushed to the backburner, is the Lions moving that much closer to the abyss of another 10 loss season, with their 51-14 loss to the Chargers. Srew 'em, I spent all day yesterday blogging those jackasses. So let's talk some real football, the only football team that truly matters in SE MI, the Michigan Wolverines. The Wolverines are finally moving forward, and with all due respect to the l ...

After a flurry of Wolverines MCOD, we leave the leaders and the best, and do a 180. We touch on the team that are best known as followers and the worst, the Detroit Lions. As you might guess, thanks to the debacle in San Diego, the Killer's acolytes are in a pissed off mood. But for all the bile and wailing, only one commenter made me laugh, arrowheadblu, thanks to his snarky take on the Lions coaching staff...fire the defensive coordinator -- if you dare.On most NFL teams, a defensive coordinator whose defense gives up 50+ points twice, 40+ points twice, and 30+ points thrice, all ending in embarrassing losses, and is ranked at the bottom of the NFL in scoring defense, would be living on borrowed time. Unfortunately, the Lions aren't most NFL teams. When that coordinator is the son-in-law of the head coach, I think his job is safe. But props go to arrowheadblu for pointing out the insanity of it all...

But tonight? It's not worth the effort.Today, the Lions quit. This was a total mail-in performance. They had their asses handed to them in a helmet. With the season essentially over, the playoffs out of the equation, the Lions are now biding their time till the end of the season.I can't believe I let myself get sucked in by this dog of a team. I should have known better. Hell, I do know better, but I did anyway.I honestly think the Lions will finish the season on an 8 game losing stre ...

What else is there to say other than, "Lions suck!" - 4th quarter Lions - Chargers thoughts
2007-12-17 01:22:00
We start the 4th quarter with Kitna throwing his 4th pick, as the former Expo, Cromartie, gets the interception at the 34. I wouldn't expect anything else...A run some someone has the Bolts at the 50. Then it's Sproles for 10 more. This is fucking laughable.Sproles up the gut, steps out of a few tackles, gets 7. Dan Miller is going on about the Lions awful beyond words tackling on the radio broadcast. It's Sproles again, gets 2 more. Sproles again, but loses his footing, no gain. 4th down, the San Diego fans smell blood, want the Bolts to go for it!They do, but the Lions stop the arterial spray bleeding, stopping Sproles short on 4th down. Lions take over at their own 31.Will this game ever end? Watch the snow fall all day was more entertaining.Kitna finds Cason at the 50, then dumps the ball to him again, he's down at the Bolt 42.2nd down, Kitna drops back, hit as he throws, incomplete. 3rd down...Ditto. 4th and 3. Ditto. Incomplete pass, Bolts over on downs. If this were a few weeks a ...

The Lions are the bane of my existence - 3rd quarter Lions - Chargers thoughts
2007-12-17 00:44:00
The Bolts will start the 3rd quarter with the ball. Sproles returns the kick to...the 14? Where did the coverage come from?Sproles takes the hand off...BIG HOLE....He's out of bounds 34 yards later, and tack on 5 more for a Lions face mask. The Bolts are in Lions territory. 2 runs net 3 yards. Rivers fades back...Looks for Gates...He's wide open at 40, down at the Lions 35. Whatever.A run gets 2. Rivers drops back...Looks for Gates at the 10...Ooooo, should have been caught, but he short armed it... 3rd and 8.Rivers is going to throw again...It's Davis across the middle for 11, 1st down at the Lions 22.The Bolts have their 4th string RB in, some bowling ball shaped dude gets 1 on 1st down.Rivers is up to the line, doesn't like what he sees, which I find quite surprising, as he's looking at the Lions defense, and calls time out.Rivers looks for Gates in the end zone, overthrows him as he was pressured by a late blitz. 3rd and 8 at the Lions 21. You know they are going to convert...A sla ...

Bolts are here to kick ass, and chew bubble gum. They are all out of bubble gum - 2nd quarter Lions - Chargers thoughts
2007-12-16 23:53:00
The 2nd quarter starts with Kitna dropping back...Looks for McDoanald...It's a God damn PICK! The LB, Wilhem, baited Kitna, made the pick, and is run out of bounds at the Chargers 49.Fuck me, fuck the Lions, fuck the NFL.When do the Wolverines kick off? Can Rich Rodriguez coach the bowl game instead of Lllloyd? The Bolts start with a Turner run, get 6, and are into Lions territory.Rives fades...Lions with pressure...Dumps it off, and loses 6 yards! 3rd and 10.You're SHITTING me! It's a swing pass to Sproles, he RUNS THROUGH a Sims tackle, and gets the 1st down at the Lions 39. Awful tackling. Just fucking awful.A run gets 2, and Rivers misfires on a pass. 3rd and 8 from the Detroit 37.False start on the Bolts! Make it 3rd and 13.Rivers drops back...looks...It's Chambers with a leaping catch at the 20! Caught it between 4 Lions. Christ. God damn, the Lions SUCK!Then Redding jumps offsides. This is the stiff Millen made one of the highest paid tackles in the NFL? Why am I still a fan?Tur ...

The beginning of the end of the Detroit Lions season: 1st quarter Lions - Chargers thoughts
2007-12-16 23:04:00
Here in SE MI the weather is absolutely brutal. There's close to a foot of snow on the ground, high winds, temps in the mid 20's. Unfortunately, it's going to get even worse, as the Lions will be appearing on our TV screens shortly. We are watching live (I'm alive!) from Qualcomm Stadium in sunny Southern California! It's the Detroit Lions vs. the San Diego Chargers. We'll be hearing the play by play from FOX C-listers Sam Rosen and Tim Ryan, and the hair helmeted Chris Meyers on the sidelines. The Bolts have everything to play for, a division title, and playoff spot, while the Lions have...Well, they have a game to play. The NFL says so.Avieon Cason takes the kick for the Lions, and is de-cleated by Siler at the 28! OUCH! That'll leave a mark...2 Kevin Jones runs get a whole 3 yards, and we have out first 3rd down conversion try. Kitna drills a pass to Calvin Johnson, but but bounces off his hands. Fucking figures. The Leo's will punt. Their MVP, Nick Harris, punts the ball out of bou ...

The National Michigan nightmare is OVER!
2007-12-16 20:55:00
Michigan AD "Captain" Billy Martin, the sailing enthusiast who was flailing about like a drunk having seizures during a clumsy coaching search, with seemingly only a puncher's chance of pulling his ass out of the fire, landed that punch...WVU's Rich Rodriguez will be the new head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. From the West Virginia Gazette Mail...The Rich Rodriguez era at West Virginia ended early Sunday afternoon, not with a bang, but with a whimper. In an early afternoon meeting with his football team, Rodriguez announced he was leaving to become the head coach at Michigan.Rodriguez walked into a scheduled 1:30 p.m. meeting with his team and emerged 10 minutes later without comment and walked briskly back to his office. Shortly thereafter the players began to file out of the meeting room, somber-faced and generally without comment.Rodriguez reportedly met with Michigan officials this past Friday in Toledo, Ohio.Landing RichRod is not a grand slam. But when factoring in his relativ ...

Answering the Detroit Lions "Burning questions" - Cliff notes edition
2007-12-15 21:05:00
It's the calm before the storm at TWFE HQ. I'm anxiously watching the mating dance take place between the University of Michigan and Rich Rodriguez, while waiting for DEATHSTORM 2007 to hit SE Michigan in a few hours. 6-10 inches of white stuff by tomorrow is the latest word. I expect the local TV stations to go into oncoming apocalypse mode shortly, telling viewers to...DON'T LEAVE THE HOUSE! CLEAR THE STREETS! TAKE COVER! YOU GONNA DIE!In other words, it felt like a good time to answer a mini round of burning questions, courtesy of the Detroit News' Terry Foster.Topics covered include the Lions chances against the Chargers, Damien Woody's play at tackle, and the benching of Kalmiba Edwards.Let's answer the Cliff notes version of the burning questions!Burning questions as the NFL regular season grinds toward its conclusion:Q: The Lions nearly toppled the Cowboys last week. Answering the Detroit Tigers "Burning questions" - Obsessing over the future of Brandon Inge edition
2007-12-14 22:56:00
After the overdosing on the Mitchell report for the past 36 hours, it's refreshing to just talk baseball as a game, rather than as a steroid clearinghouse. Thankfully, it's Lynn Henning to the rescue with his latest round of burning questions!Topics today include (Again) Brandon Inge, Inge's glove vs. Miguel Cabrera's bat, Chad Durbin's release, the relative strength of the Tigers' rotation and bullpen compared to other elite teams, and one of Henning's evergreens, the Tigers need for a young catcher.Let's burn that evergreen, and answer questions!Burning questions after the Tigers pruned some payroll and now ponder a deal for a displaced third baseman:Q: What kind of return will the Tigers get in their bid to trade Brandon Inge?Henning: Probably not as much as fans would like. The Tigers might get a relief pitcher who has a shot at making the team in 2008. They might get a prospect or two, although they aren't likely to be great ones. The way it works in baseball is that you can gener ...

Above the Fold - The Detroit take on the Mitchell Report
2007-12-14 20:15:00
December 13, 2007 will be known as a day of infamy in baseball circles. The release of MLB's Mitchell report confirmed what we already knew, that baseball is rife with PED's, with the mid 90's through the early 00's being the golden era of steroids, so to speak. The frenzy over the report was a tad over the top, as in all honesty, George Mitchell's investigation didn't pave much in the way of new territory. Save for one new name being exposed. One of the best pitchers in baseball history, Roger Clemens, as many suspected, was a steroid abuser on par with the likes of Bonds and Giambi. His legacy was severely, likely irrevocably, tarnished.Mitchell was more effective in getting across the fact that his 2 year long investigation was only the tip of the iceberg, and that the MLBPA, the MLB owners, and commissioner Bud Selig, all need to agree to make big changes in their drug testing policy. It's currently a farce, with so many loopholes and different ways to beat or avoid the testing ...

I read that the Lions defensive backfield has a new motto, thanks to Kenoy Kennedy.Lions safety Kenoy Kennedy gave his fellow defensive players black knit hats with "T.H.U.G." on them in blue. They wore them for practice Thursday. Coach Rod Marinelli wouldn't say what the acronym meant, but he said it was beautiful. What on earth could that acronym mean? Mlive comment of the day
2007-12-14 16:53:00
For today's Mlive gem, we stay in the Michigan Wolverines section. In an article about Michigan assistant coach Andy Moeller's DUI bust, Wolverine fan taterrific tells us about an encounter with a drunken Moeller and Jim Harbaugh, back in their playing days, and spins it into a "Harbaugh for head coach!" screed.I have been tempted to tell this story in the forum for awhile, but never found a place where it was appropriate. Now, I have found one.In the 80's, I was a banquet bartender at a local hotel where the elite, "creme de la creme" Michigamma fraternity had a party. I think it was their formal, but it doesn't really matter.Anyway, toward the end of the evening, Jim Harbaugh and Andy Moeller walked up to the bar. Well, Harbaugh walked, anyway. Moeller stumbled and yelled for another beer. I told him I wasn't allowed to serve him because he was too intoxicated. Of course, he started begging for a beer in his drunken, slobbering "voice."Harbaugh decided to take charge, and proceeded t ...

Thanks to a tip from Mike of The Daily Fungo, I learned that the soon to be infamous Mitchell Report is available for download as a PDF.Mitchell ReportNow starts the "Find the name" game in the 300+ page document.I did a quick and dirty search using "Tigers" as the search term. The following names turned up.Mark CarreonHal MorrisRondell WhitePhil HyattFernando VinaNook LoganThat's it, no real big names. Also, the report states on pg. 111, that near the end of 2004, a Tigers clubhouse employee found a toiletry kit with unused syringes and vials that were determined to be anabolic steroids. It was not reported, and the employee claims that they don't remember to whom it belonged.Gary Sheffield's name is all over the BALCO section, but that was to be expected. No Ivan Rodriguez, despite all the speculation. All in all, there are no bombshells on the Detroit Tigers front...

Does our ignoring the obvious make us just as culpable as the PED ingesting players?
2007-12-13 19:47:00
I try to keep the level of snark quite high on TWFE, but I'm not feeling it today. There's no link dump today either, as it's truly the quiet before the storm. The storm being the "Mitchell report."Today's release of the report that will (supposedly) expose the seamy underside of that was baseball in the 90's, thanis to the out-of-control, rampant use of PED's, has me feeling quite melancholy.I've stated on TWFE before that baseball will always be number 1 with me. I love other sports, especially the NFL and NCAA football, but I've had a closer relationship with baseball than with any other sport.I'm sure most of you are like me. Baseball was the first team sport you played, and also the last. I played the baseball in some sort of organized fashion from the age of 6 on, all through school, and then softball into my late 30's. I can't say that about an other sport.I can say the same about my sports fandom, The Detroit Tigers were the first team I religiously followed. The first team I ...

Today we step away from the loopy Mlive Lions fanatics, and check with the panicky Mlive Wolverines fans. We also have a 2 for 1 special! In a pair of Michigan articles regarding the coaching search, Mliver sckonwin carpet bombs both comment threads with his interesting choice as to who should be the leading candidate to take over the Wolverines. He's sckonwin is so fired up, he's the first post in both threads...STEVE MARIUCCI....... For GOD'S sake, why isn't Mooch being talked about? That would be the best result to this seemingly botched search.And...STEVE MARIUCCI is the best candidate for the job. I think he's holding off taking the UCLA job waiting for Bill Martin to call. Mooch would be just the thing for our young QB, not to mention he'll bring a FRESH new offensive scheme, which we sorely need!Dude, all these comments are missing are logic, and more importantly, "FIRST POST!" for that matter, "Mooch" and "fresh new offensive scheme" should never ever be used in the same sentenc ...

The Detroit Lions as seen thru the music of...Bob Seger
2007-12-12 22:25:00
Good friend of TWFE, Awful Chief, informed me a couple of days ago that he thought that KSK had "borrowed" my format of "As seen thru the music of" posts with their Led Zeppelin/NFL version. I'll just say that in blogging, imitation the sincerest form if flattery. And it's not as matching sports figures to media is that original of an idea anyway. But yeah, it did seem awful similar. But that's neither here nor there. Awful Chief's comment did get me to thinking that I'm overdue for another one of those posts...The first concert I ever attended, more years ago than I care to mention, was a Bob Seger show at Cobo Arena. I'll just say it was in support of an album that has "Moves" in the title. OK, I admit it, I'm fucking old.But I digress...If you grew up in Detroit, you are a Bob Seger fan. No ifs, ands or buts about it. The man is a Detroit icon, if there ever was one. Back in the day, when album oriented rock ruled FM radio, Seger ruled the airwaves, as a staple on stations like WRIF ...

At Check out my Hemi, the slightly off the wall Awful Chief has been having a field day with the Michigan coaching search. Awful's been campaigning for Lloyd Carr's BFF, Russell Crowe, to become the Woverines' head coach. But there's a diversity bump in the road...Russell Crowe is a white Australian. Hello!?!? What's up with that? You call that diversity? I'll bet his criminal ancestors were forced to move to Australia because they went around being intolerant towards people of other ethnicities. After playing all of 2 games at offensive tackle, the speculation over what's next for Damion Woody has already begun. The Killer speculates that the Lions may be changing their tune as to Woody's future with the team. Once thought to be a sure bet to be moving on, he may be back in the Lions' plans. One comment to Killer's article stood out as wise, a refreshing breath of fresh air from the normally loopy, Lions loving, Mlive posters. leyland4ever is too on the ball to be hanging out at Mlive...Every year, players leave and we say good riddance. Every year, we get new players through the draft and free agency and think they're going to be great, until we actually see them play. Notice a pattern here?If Woody stays, he likely won't live up to his new contract. If he's replaced, we'll declare the new guy a bum and wish we'd kept Woody. Why do the Tigers hate me so?
2007-12-11 20:59:00
I was in a good mood, till I read this...Outfielder Timo Perez has elected to remain with the Tigers, by signing a one-year major-league contract worth a maximum of $525,000.The deal is similar in structure to those signed by Detroit infielder Ramon Santiago and relief pitcher Francisco Cruceta earlier this off-season. It includes a partial guarantee – $150,000, in Perez’s case – and a spot on the 40-man roster.I thought that was it for Timo Perez in Detroit when the Tigers DFA'ed him a few weeks ago. Well...Shit.I think Dave Dombrowski signed Timo just to piss me off!Come on Tigers, you know that Timo's hot bat in September was nothing more than a mirage. He's never hit that well in his entire life, and I think I'm safe in saying he'll never hit that well again. It's bad enough they signed the man Rod Allen calls "TEE-MO!," but to give him a big league deal? That means he's in the mix to make the opening day roster! Could this also mean that Marcus Thames may not be offered arbi ...

The Michigan coaching search seems to have reached...Well, it's somewhere, I have no God damn idea where though. One thing is clear. The Wolverines are no closer today to hiring a head football coach than they were the day Lloyd Carr retired.Any names we hear associated with the job are just rumor and innuendo, with the only things we know for sure is...Greg Schiano turned them down.Ron English had a //gulp// second interview.Les Miles has signed his contract extension, and the LSU athletic director had been talking smack ever since.Captain Billy has been dry docked, and was in contact with Les Miles last Friday. The fan and alumni base are embarrassed, pissed off, and are hoping against hope that Michigan hires a qualified coach...Soon.Everything else is just conjecture. That's not stopping anyone in the MSM or blogosphere from adding to the conjecture, rumors, and innuendo. Above the Fold - The Lions continue to crush souls and hope
2007-12-10 17:43:00
Kurt, the esteemed blogger behind Mack Avenue Tigers, asked why I let myself get so emotionally involved with such a clueless organization as the Detroit Lions. I didn't really have an answer, as the Lions break my heart in one way, or another, EVERY season. I've been a fan since the days of Greg Landry and Bill Munson. That's a long time to keep coming back, season after season, to have my hopes crushed. I shouldn't be a fan at this point, but I keep coming back.As a youngster, I sat in front of the TV, crying my eyes out, after the Lions, who may have been the best team in the NFL that season, lost 5-0 to Dallas in the 1970 wild card game. All these years later, though nothing has changed, I no longer cry. Instead, my normal mild mannered self transforms, and I rage away, swearing like a sailor, as the Lions break my heart once again, as the playoffs move farther and farther out of reach. Why are the Lions, "The Lions?" Is it karma? Did they do something in the past, like trading Bob ...

Here's the links to today's live blogging, and my descent from happiness, into a deep, dark insane rage...Like lambs to a slaughter: 1st quarter Lions - Cowboys thoughtsIt's not a slaughter. Who knew? 2nd quarter Lions - Cowboys thoughtsIt's a ballgame! Really! 3rd quarter Lions - Cowboys thoughtsThat was painful: 4th quarter Lions - Cowboys thoughts1. Nice, but if the Lions had someone, anyone, with speed returning kicks...No sense in dreaming about what you don't have...Kitna starts out throwing...finds McDonald at the sideline for 13, and a 1st down at the 48!It's a stretch play for Jones...He turns the corner! Jones is all the way to the Dallas 33, an 18 yard gain! Lions are responding well after the Dallas score!Kitna's back to throw again...It's McHugh in the flat! 1st down at the Dallas 12! YESYESYES!On 1st down, Kitna throw ...
