NMDC to look overseas for iron ore

By Biman Mukherji NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's leading state-run miner, National Mineral Development Corp, is to scout for iron ore resources overseas to meet a likely surge in demand from steel firms, its chairman said on Wednesday. The government expects annual steel production to top 124 million tonnes by 2012, with several major foreign players and local firms looking to expand or begin operations in Asia's third-largest economy. "We are planning to step outside of India, particularly for iron ore," Rana Som, NMDC's chairman and managing director, told Reuters in a telephone interview. He said the company's iron ore production in the financial year ending March 2008 was estimated at 30 million tonnes, and was expected to rise to 32 million tonnes by 2008/09.
