Will Not Go Quietly Into The Night
2007-11-17 08:24:01
This blog doesn't get that many hits, but I guess word is spreading. I've had three front offices contact me, asking me to take down the blog. They thought I was one of their former employees. I wasn't, but even if one had been my old FO, I wouldn't cave to pressure. Guess more front offices were like mine than I thought. Maybe they all are. ...

The Lost Art Of Knocking
2007-11-13 22:06:28
The men's and women's bathroom on my floor of the stadium were side by side. These bathrooms were small single bathrooms, like you would find in a home. One afternoon, right before a scheduled interview with a potential new intern, the assistant GM used the men's restroom. To his dismay, the men's was out of towels. He then proceeded next door to the women's room to retrieve paper towels. He didn't knock. The door was unlocked.Unfortunately, the poor girl waiting to be interviewed by him, was using it. Sitting there in all her glory, the assistant GM walked in on her.Needless to say it was a highly awkward (and entertaining for some) interview. She was offered the internship. But she didn't take it. ...

Chasing Amy
2007-11-11 21:43:44
There is nothing funnier than a guy falling for a lesbian. At least if your Ben Affleck. One poor guy in our office was head over heels for a lovely woman (non-employee). Lets just say she had at one point been a celebrity of one kind. Like so many other actors, musicians and internet sensations, her 15 minutes of fame were over. While she was never public with her sexual orientation, most people knew. And when I say most, I mean everyone.Except my co-worker.They had met through friends and eventually became more than acquaintances. He was used a lot as an escort to public functions and she would make appearances at the ballpark every once in a while. He was totally in love with her, but never pursued it more than she would let him. He said they were "taking it slow".Well fast or slow, she still is gonna play for the other team. ...

Players Aren't The Only Sluts At A Baseball Stadium
2007-11-11 20:09:32
Baseball players aren't the only ones who sleep around. Our GM was notorious for finding a one night stand on the nights he actually was in town. Married and a father, it wasn't going to stop him. And he never slept with the same woman twice. Most times the females were half his age. He never hid the fact either. He would then regale the office with a story or the men at lunch. If the story was told at lunch I was always filled in later, women were not invited to lunch with the GM. I was accidentally invited to one said lunch by a co-worker who was going. I wasn't spoken to by any of the men (except the one who invited me) and neither he nor I were ever invited to a GM lunch again. He seemed to think women were only good for one thing. Which might explain why the two female office sluts (see previous post) were kept on payroll. ...

Why Else Would You Sell A Team?
2007-11-11 06:10:26
So, what are some reasons to sell a baseball team? Money? That's usually the biggest one, but how about a player knocking up your daughter?Yup, the previous owner sold the team because a player, in both senses, got the owners daughter pregnant. The owner was so embarrassed and angry, he sold the team. First he shipped off his daughter to give birth (what is this the 50s?), then he unloaded the team. The papers all read the same old same old - he was getting too old, it was a good offer, it was best for the team, he wanted to spend more time with his family. You know, take a vacation. Some vacation, having your daughter give birth to a kid who was fathered out of wedlock (the previous owner was incredibly conservative) by a player he hated in the first place. So kids, if your dad owns a baseball team, don't get pregnant (or get someone pregnant). You might lose the best part of your inheritance. ...

The Best Little Whorehouse In.........
2007-11-09 03:11:44
There used to be a house of ill repute located in very close proximity to the stadium. Many of the players would frequent it after games. For years players and a few clubhouse employees would pay for numerous services to rewind and relax. Until the raid. One night the local police stormed the complex, taking all the um, ladies, into custody, arrested all the Johns and shut the place down. Luckily it was during an away week, so none of the players were arrested. And even luckier, the madam didn't keep records or a little black book. None of the players or stadium employees were implicated, even though they were supposedly some of the best customers.Too bad, I would have loved to have seen some of those mug shots. ...

No Women Allowed
2007-11-06 23:11:20
I never quite understood why it was OK at my front office to keep women on staff that were solely there to sleep with the players (see my last blog) but not hire females for certain "real" professional positions or internships. My front office did not allow women to work in public relations or media. No women were allowed in the locker room, for any reason. Over lunch one day with a a sales intern, I asked her what her career goals were. She said she wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps, a very successful PR firm founder, and had worked and interned with some very well known PR firms. I inquired why she was interning in sales and not in PR, and she told me she wasn't allowed. She was told point blank at her interview that the team does not believe in hiring women to work in the media and public relations department. No woman, under any circumstances, would ever be hired. But the poor girl wanted into sports so bad she was willing to intern in a position she had no interest ...

Only Good For One Thing
2007-11-04 20:50:06
There were very few women in my front office. Not counting three interns (which is another story for later) there were five of us. Two of these were there for one thing, and working it wasn't (well my definition of working). I wondered what they did, how they contributed to the office. All they did all day was message each other on MySpace and talk on AIM. They never answered their phone, never returned calls and the one task assigned to them was fully carried out by their one intern. Me an another employee wondered what purpose they served and why they still had a job with the team. Then the season started and the players came to town. They were a nice welcoming committee for the boys. The first day at the stadium one of them accidentally pressed their game walkie during some physical shenanigans and broadcast some lovely audio for all of us to hear. The first day! Everyone just looked at each other, a few rolled their eyes, but this was apparently their purpose. Every night t ...

The GM Who Wasn't There
2007-11-03 04:05:52
The team's GM at the time did not reside in the city. Or in the surrounding area. Or even the state. The general public had no idea the GM lived a few hundred miles away. He was an absent GM, coming in to the stadium maybe once a month, usually for only a day. Sometimes he would fly in and out the same day. The front office was on autopilot. In fact, we ran a fairly well-oiled machine (to the general public's eye). His presence there actually would put a kink in things. He had poor suggestions, poor business negotiating skills and even poorer media skills. He always looked like a jackass and an idiot in the papers. Ok, so he really was a jackass and idiot in real life, but there was no painting him otherwise no matter how hard we tried. Other staff memebers would interact with the press in hopes of keeping the GM out, but he was a limelight seeking man who would call the press himself. Anything to get his name in the media. Shit hit the fan if another employee was quoted ...

Play Ball
2007-11-02 03:26:50
I am a former front office employee of a professional baseball team. A female I might add, and one of a handful (literally) who didn't sleep with the players. I worked long hours, covered the asses of a few of the men in my office and was sexually harassed on a more than one occassion.I no longer work in baseball, or even reside in the same city. All of these events happened the last two years. Why I am starting this blog? After you read some of my stories, you'll see why I need "vent therapy". I also want the truth to be known on the inner workings of a front office, especially what women are put though on a regular basis. Its also my own way of saying "Fuck You" to my former organization, some of the senior management and some of my former fellow employees.Play ball. ...
