Crazy golf story
2008-03-05 01:30:36
Most parents will admit that when they are late for a child's appointment they will "fly" to get there. A Lake Villa man actually took that sentiment literally when he flew his plane from Wisconsin to the golf course of Lincolnshire Marriott Resort because his 14-year-old was late for his tennis lesson at the Lincolnshire Club. The pilot, Robert Kadera of Lake Villa, was at Ernie's Towing Service in Vernon Hills on Monday afternoon, replacing the plane's skis with tires. He was planning to move the plane off the towing lot.He said he did not want to make a comment until he found out what police were going to do about the incident.Lincolnshire police and the Lake County state's attorney's office are reviewing the incident, according to Lincolnshire police Detective John-Erik Anderson."(Kadera) wanted to get back into his plane and take off again," Anderson said. ...
Insurance - Piece of mind
2008-03-05 01:17:57
To protect what you own Insurance really is one of life's necessities. Whether you are protecting a car, house, personal items (including those golf clubs of course) or anything else insurance can bring you piece of mind if something were to go wrong. Recently I increased my contents insurance after going through the house and realizing I had much more stuff than I had accounted for. By doing this I found that I had quite seriously undervalued my contents insurance estimate. As I was doing this I also took photos of everything of value to make sure I can get everything replaced if something goes wrong. You could even go one step further and write down all the serial numbers for the expensive electronics that you own. This makes replacing the exact model much easier. The next step is to visit or call you insurance agent and increase your estimates. This is a great time for getting a few quotes and haggling a little bit with your current insurance company.Autonet Insurance is a great pl ...

Ochoa wins HSBC Champions Tournament
2008-03-03 02:23:50
World No.1 Lorena Ochoa cruised to an 11-stroke win at the $US2 million ($A2.11 million) Women's Champions tournament on Sunday on her season debut. Sweden's Annika Sorenstam finished second on nine under with American Paula Creamer in third place two shots further back. Australia's Karrie Webb finished in a tie for fifth with American Stacy Prammanasudh on five under, 15 shots off the pace. On a day when monsoon-like storms sent spectators sprinting for cover and left others cowering under umbrellas, Mexican Ochoa produced a solid 68 for a combined 20-under par at the Tanah Merah Country Club. Play was suspended several times due to the torrential downpours that submerged greens, left puddles on the fairways and had players kicking their heels in the clubhouse. The final group took eight hours to complete their round. The 26-year-old Ochoa, the only player to shoot four rounds under 70, takes home a cheque for $US300,000 ($A316,400) for the win. ...

Ernie Els wins Honda Classic
2008-03-03 00:21:58
This time, Ernie Els could enjoy someone else's final-round misfortune. Ending nearly a four-year drought between PGA Tour victories, Els shot a 3-under 67 Sunday to win The Honda Classic. He finished at 6 under, one shot better than Luke Donald (71) and two ahead of Nathan Green (67). "It's been a long time coming," Els said. Els and Mark Calcavecchia were tied for the lead as the sun began setting on PGA National. But Calcavecchia hit into a greenside bunker at the par-3 15th, and his shot from the sand looked fine when it hit the green. Somehow, it never stopped rolling. The ball came to rest on a rock ledge across the green. Calcavecchia walked over, tossed the ball into the water and made a double bogey to give Els the outright lead. Els made a cool par on the par-5 finishing hole, then waited to see if anyone would match his score. No one did, although Donald had a chance on the last. His birdie chip from just off the green stopped a coup ...
Mark Brown wins Johnnie Walker Classic
2008-03-03 00:20:17
Unheralded New Zealander Mark Brown surged up the leaderboard with a stunning back nine to capture the Johnnie Walker Classic title on Sunday.Brown, who was four shots behind at the turn, fired four consecutive birdies and another at the last to reel in Taichiro Kiyata as the overnight leader faltered, winning by three shots with five-under 67 for 18-under-par 270.The 33-year-old, who only recently returned to golf after a brief stint in the mid-1990s, landed the biggest payday of his career -- 420,000 dollars -- for his second straight victory after last week's Sail Open.Japan's Kiyota carded 71 for 15-under-par 273, tied for second with Australian Greg Chalmers and Englishman Graeme Storm at the par-72 DLF Golf and Country Club.Triple major winner Vijay Singh closed with 69 for nine-under-par 279 as his late charge ran out of steam.World number five Adam Scott, the pre-tournament favourite, finished well down the leaderboard with seven-under-par 281 despite finishing with a flourish ...

Unheralded Japanese golfer Taichiro Kiyota shot a 5-under-par 67 to take the lead Saturday in the third round of the Johnnie Walker Classic.Kiyota, who eagled the par-5 sixth, had a 14-under-par, 202 total heading into the final round. He's one stroke ahead of New Zealand's Mark Brown (64) and India's Jyoti Randhawa (68), playing on his home course."This is unbelievable. I'm obviously very excited to be on top of the leaderboard. It's the first time for me to be in such a position," said the 27-year-old Kiyota, who hasn't won in five years as a pro. "I may not be able to sleep well tonight."Vijay Singh shot a 69 and is tied for 10th overall in the tournament jointly sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.Brown, who at one point in his career gave up golf and took up an office job for three years, won on the Asian Tour last week."I had the ability, but I just didn't show it the first time round. I gave it up for three years and worked," Brown said. "Then I began getting an itch to s ...
Golf pro, computers and plumbing
2008-03-02 09:20:29
When my friend was training to be a golf pro he often talked about his experiences with me. He knew he was never going to make it on the professional tour, but he still wanted to pursue his dream on earning a living through his favorite pastime - golf. I would also talk about my training experiences with him and we found that even though our industries seemed completely separate (I am in the computer industry) there were many similarities in our training. It seems as long as you are doing something that interests you, even Plumbing Courses then you are most likely to succeed in your profession. If you are interested my friend makes an excellent club pro and has taught many people to love the game as much as he does! ...
Accenture Match Play - Els heads home
2008-02-21 06:34:08
Ernie Els became the first big name to fall by the wayside when he was crushed 6&5 by American Jonathan Byrd in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Wednesday. The South African world number four bogeyed four of the first nine holes before losing the match on the 13th green, the fifth time he has lost in the tournament's opening round in eight appearances. Byrd, world-ranked 63rd, reeled off six birdies in a flawless display at Dove Mountain's Gallery Golf Club for a winning start on his debut in the first World Golf Championships (WGC) event of the year. "I feel good about where my game is and in a week like this you've got all to gain, nothing to lose," a beaming Byrd told reporters. "I went out there and played some really good golf. I barely got in the field so I was excited about being here, and excited about having a good match with Ernie. It was fun."Read the complete golf news story ...
More sales for your business - golf or anything else
2008-02-21 06:32:00
I was talking earlier today about how good training can really set you up for a great career in your chosen industry. The training you receive can be the difference between landing your dream job or missing out on the opportunity all together. In the modern world training really is necessary no matter what job you plan on doing.Training can also have other benefits. During my training I quickly learned that the job I was planning on doing wasn't for me and I was able to switch to a more appropriate training course before I had completely gone down the wrong path. Once I found an area I enjoyed it seemed like the training wasn't really work at all and I enjoy the job I have now (almost) every day!AS-SA is a sales training, course and consultancy company in the UK. The are a 26 year old company that offers Sales Training UK, which is designed to help organisations improve sales performance. Accenture Match Play - Montgomerie beat Furyk
2008-02-21 02:37:37
Colin Montgomerie gained a major confidence boost by beating American Jim Furyk 3&2 in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship first round on Wednesday. The eight-times European number one came from one down after two holes, a run of three birdies in four holes from the 12th helping him seal victory on the 16th green. "I'm very, very happy," a smiling Montgomerie told reporters after advancing into the second round of the elite World Golf Championships (WGC) event for the fifth time in eight appearances. "I believe Jim Furyk, after Tiger (Woods) really, is one of the U.S.'s strongest match players and the toughest guys to beat. His Ryder Cup record suggests that. "I've learned that I can still compete and I can still play this game. I've just beaten one of the U.S.'s top, top match players and toughest opponents. It's done wonders for me and done wonders for my confidence." Montgomerie, whose world ranking has slipped to 62nd, was delighted to record ...
When it isn't golf it's finance
2008-02-21 02:34:12
I said yesterday that reading blogs is one of my favorite things to do, well I also like reading finance news too - even though I don't know a whole lot about it I still like to keep up with the latest in this area. Recently I was interested to hear that many homeowners are confused about which if the many Mortgages to choose from. I can certainly understand how this is the case, but it doesn't sound like it makes for a very good situation to be in. Buying a house is already stressful enough without adding to the pressure of having to choose from the many mortgages avalaible. I personally think that people should choose a good mortgage broker who will go through all the deals with you and also inform you of any hidden fees or charges that you should take into account. They really can help alleviate the confusion because they have access to all the major lenders and can quickly compare the differences between them and help you choose a mortgage. I guess the main problem at the moment is ...

Accenture Match Play - Tiger advances after a scare
2008-02-21 01:54:59
Tiger Woods pulled off a spectacular Houdini-like escape to beat fellow American J.B. Holmes one up in Wednesday's opening round at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. The world number one came from three down with five holes to play at Dove Mountain's Gallery Golf Club to maintain his bid for a sixth successive title worldwide. Tournament champion at La Costa in 2003 and 2004, Woods reeled off three birdies in a row from the 14th to level the match before rolling in a 36-foot eagle putt on the 17th green to go ahead for the first time. Holmes, who had never previously played in competition with Woods, narrowly missed an eight-footer to birdie the last and take the match into extra holes...Read the complete golf news story ...

Strange golf news - Elaine Joyce sues public club for men's only event
2008-02-20 06:56:57
Elaine Joyce, a champion amateur golfer, and her father were looking forward to a weekend tournament last May at the respected public course on Cape Cod where they hold full memberships. But their names were not listed when officials posted the tee times for the event at the Dennis Pines course. Joyce’s father, Pat, received a call from the club’s head pro, Russell Champoux, who said the tournament was not open to women. It did not matter that Joyce would play from the men’s tees. Or that she had won more than 20 club championships over the years. Or that she had captured the title in 2001 at an event for the state’s top female club champions. Joyce complained to the town, but over the next several months, Robert Canevazzi, the Dennis town administrator, did not budge. When Joyce filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination in July, the club said its actions were not discriminatory. In a letter, Canevazzi told Joyce that the club would begin ...

Chipping Tips
2008-02-19 03:25:12
Chipping is an area of the game that can save you many shots a round. A player with a good short game will generally practice this part of the game for many hours. Time should be spent honing the correct technique and stroking the ball over an over until it feels as natural as possible. This sounds all well and good, but many golfers need some help finding the correct technique for them and I have found some of the better golf chipping videos out there to help you in this area. Try all of the techniques and find the advice that suits your game the best and then hone these skills until chipping becomes a natural part of your game. The added benefit to this is that you will feel more relaxed next time you have to make a difficult chip or find yourself in a tense club tournament situation.I hope these golf chipping tips shave a few strokes off your game ...

Golf News: Northern Trust Open Day 3 Wrap
2008-02-17 05:40:31
Phil Mickelson held off a strong challenge from fellow American Jeff Quinney to grab a one-shot lead after Saturday's third round at the Northern Trust Open. Four strokes ahead of the field overnight, Mickelson fired a one-under-par 70 in firm, fast conditions at Riviera Country Club to post an 11-under total of 202. Former U.S. amateur champion Quinney joined Mickelson at the top of the leaderboard with an ace at the par-three sixth before slipping back into second place with a 67. American John Rollins was a further four shots back at six under after shooting a six-birdie 69 on a breezy, sun-drenched day. World number two Mickelson, in pursuit of his 33rd PGA Tour title but his first at Riviera, made a faltering start when he three-putted for bogey at the par-three fourth. His playing partner Quinney had birdied the first and fifth, where he rolled in a 21-footer, and briefly snatched the outright lead with his spectacular ace at the sixth. His tee ...

Golf News: Northern Trust Open Day 2 Wrap
2008-02-16 14:04:15
Phil Mickelson seems determined to add Los Angeles to his collection of West Coast trophies.A year after losing at Riviera in a playoff, Mickelson played golf as spectacular as the weather Friday in the Northern Trust Open, finishing with a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 7-under 64 and a four-shot lead.Even after starting with a 68, Mickelson felt he was close to putting his game together. It started with a 3-iron to 12 feet on the par-5 first for a simple birdie, and built momentum with a 60-foot birdie on the fifth and never slowed. When he finished his best score ever at Riviera, he was at 10-under 132 and in firm command going into the weekend."This is a tournament that has eluded me," Mickelson said of the only city in the West Coast Swing where he hasn't won. "The West Coast means a lot to me."Robert Allenby, who won at Riviera in 2001 in the cold and rain, did OK in warm sunshine with a 66 that put him at 136 with Jeff Quinney, who made bogey on the final hole for a ...

Romantic Vacations (without golf)
2008-02-16 14:00:16
As you all know Valentines day has come and gone again and while the day doesn't last very long the memories can last a lifetime. This Valentines day I spent some of the time reminiscing with my wife about the romantic New York city tours we took one Valentines day a few years ago. I don't get to the US very often, but I have just loved every visit I have ever made. Wandering through central park on Valentines day was a great, but very cold (I am a tropical boy after all), experience. My wife just loved the city (even though she is a bit of a country girl) and we spent days just exploring the city. We went on a great harbor cruise where we saw the Statue of Liberty in all her glory and took an informative double decker bus trip around the city.If you are looking for tours in the most popular US cities then Trusted Tours & Attractions are a top notch company. Their website has heaps of available tours and vacation ideas that will have you planning your next holiday in no time. If yo ...

Golf Balls
2008-02-15 06:05:50
I am always searching for good suppliers of new and used golf balls. The fact that I spend a bit of time in the trees probably accounts for my need to find a quality supplier. Golf Balls and Accessories is one site that I have used before and they certainly have the range I am looking for at the right price. I often buy a bulk pack of A and B grade balls for my practice rounds and it just doesn't hurt as much to lose one to a wayward shot or to one of the many lakes around my local course.I have also used their mixed bags of nike golf balls, which I found to be of superb quality even for playing in my local club tournaments. However, they have all the major brands including Titleist, Nike, Callaway, Noodle, Dunlop, Lady, Precep and many more all in mint condition. You will even find brand new golf balls and equipment. They also stock all the usual golf related accessories and their bulk packs of golf tees are a great choice for anyone that wants to save a few dollars. All their prices ...

Golf News: Northern Trust Open Day 1 Wrap
2008-02-15 01:50:01
South Korea's K.J. Choi shrugged off increasingly blustery conditions to go into an early one-shot lead in the Northern Trust Open first round on Thursday. The 37-year-old, who won his seventh PGA Tour title at last month's Sony Open in Hawaii, fired a flawless six-under-par 65 at Riviera Country Club. South Korea-born Kevin Na, who is now a U.S. citizen, was alone in second place after carding a five-birdie 65. Americans Chad Campbell and Vaughn Taylor opened with 67s while world number two Phil Mickelson, the highest-ranked player in a strong field at Riviera, returned a 68. Choi, who spent last week relaxing at his Texas home, made a fast start in calm early conditions with birdies on the first two holes. With his approach play in sparkling order, he then picked up further shots at the fifth and seventh to reach the turn in four-under 31. As the wind strengthened on the tree-lined layout, he struck a sand wedge approach to three feet to set ...

Northern Trust Open: The Tiger Controversy
2008-02-14 04:35:32
I found this interesting little article this morning - I recommend you read the whole thing vis the link.Eight of the top 10 players in the World Ranking will play in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club this week, the only exceptions being No. 4 Ernie Els and No. 1 Tiger Woods. Despite winning here in 1999, Els has no particular connection to Southern California. But Woods is a SoCal native, and he made his first start on the PGA Tour here, missing the cut (72-75) as a 16-year-old in 1992. "He couldn't afford the plane ticket," Charles Howell III joked. "He's only about the majors," Stuart Appleby said. "He uses regular tournaments to prepare for majors, whereas most of us use everything to prepare for everything. Augusta's a long way away."Do regular tournaments not count in Tiger's world? It sure seems like they do. Woods gets sufficiently revved up to throw upper-cuts in places like Akron, Boston, Chicago, Dublin (Ohio) — you could go right down the alphabet. So his av ...

Is Scott the only challenge to Tiger?
2008-02-13 01:56:35
Now I love Adam Scott - he is an Aussie and when on song he is a very good golfer, but Tiger Woods' former coach Butch Harmon has come out today with a very surprising prediction:Tiger Woods's former coach Butch Harmon believes Australian Adam Scott is the only young player capable of giving the American a run for his money at the top of the world rankings."Adam Scott is the best player under 30 in the world by far," Harmon said of his protege."You may get an argument for Luke Donald or Sergio Garcia but I just think Adam Scott is above them. He's a truly great talent."He is the only one who can challenge Tiger Woods in the next four or five years."He's the only one I see of the young players with all the things it takes to get close to Tiger Woods," Harmon told Sky Television's Golf Night program.World number five Scott showed his class last month when he fired a record final round of 11-under-par 61 to romp to a three-shot victory in the European ...

Lowery wins Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
2008-02-11 01:42:28
Steve Lowery had gone more than seven years and 199 tournaments without winning, a drought that would have continued Sunday at Pebble Beach if not for a stunning collapse by Vijay Singh.Three shots behind when he stood on the 15th tee, Lowery made up quick ground when Singh made three straight bogeys, then won on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with a 7-foot birdie. At 47, he became the oldest winner in the 71-year history of the AT ational Pro-Am.Lowery closed with a 4-under 68 and won for the third time in his career, all of them in playoffs.Singh recovered from his three bogeys with a wedge that stopped 2 feet away for birdie on the final hole for a 71 to force the playoff. Both players finished at 10-under 278.But the Fijian's troubles only got worse playing the famous 18th hole at Pebble Beach a second time. His drive found a bunker to the right, and his second shot clipped the top of the bunker, leaving him 192 yards short of the green. A 4-iron for his third shot plugge ...
