WWE Raw Review - 5th May 2008
2008-05-07 23:41:00
After last week’s shocking episode of Raw I was hoping to see some clearer direction in tonight’s show and two hours of understandable entertainment.Good PointsMaking the best of the bad situationAfter Regal’s crazy moment last week of cutting the Raw feed the WWE have decided to run with the ball on this one. The show turned in to the Regal show as at numerous occasions he would interfere in matches by switching off the lights or changing commentators. From an entertainment point of view it works but from a visual point of view if I was to be channel surfing and I came across raw when it was in darkness I would probably keep on switching. Only problem was that too much time was given to Regal on the show.Recent returns of legendsLast week Rowdy Roddy Piper made an appearance on Raw backstage which he followed up with another appearance this week which was added to by Trish Stratus featuring in a backstage segment with Trevor Murdoch. It’s great to see legends used in small rol ...
TNA iMPACT Review - Thursday 2nd May 2008
2008-05-04 17:06:00
After WWE’s disastrous week I was hoping TNA provide me with some entertainment and light at the end of the tunnel.Good PointsFinally a big push for LAXAfter months and months of sitting round and not doing that much without being involved in any decent storylines since they last lost the tag titles LAX have finally got a new push. With a big win over Kaz and Eric in the Deuces Wild qualifier they got good mic time to call out none other than Hector Guerrero. The crowd were popping as LAX asked Hector to corner them for the tournament at Sacrifice. This is great to see them being built and having a new direction.New TalentIn WWE normally if you are an up and coming talent you will have to wrestle for months on Heat or in Dark Matches before you are given a chance on a main show and then it would only be sparingly and as a jobber for a so called big star. However in TNA this isn’t the case as we were treated to a match featuring two brand new knockouts Cheerleader Melissa and Daisy ...
WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 2nd May 2008
2008-05-03 20:24:00
After the worst Raw in living history I was hoping Smackdown could provide me with some thought out entertainment as well as their usual quality wrestling bouts.Good PointsStrong StartThe show opened solidly with a Theodore Long announcing that all the Smackdown belts were going to be on the line tonight. Although the intelligent fans know that titles rarely change hands on TV it gets the casual fans and the live audience hyped up.Start of a new feudAfter his feud with Khali, The Big Show has now started a feud with the only remaining monster for him on Smackdown mark Henry. Although I’m not a fan of big man matches it’s nice to see Big Show enforcing his dominance by beating on the other big guys which will then put him in a strong place for main event feuds with smaller guys.Bad PointsNot enough talkingAfter recent improvements with Smackdown and them having more non wrestling segments it was back to the old formula of just having match after match. Viewers start changing channel ...
WWE Raw Review - 28th April 2008
2008-04-30 23:59:00
After a very entertaining and interesting Backlash I was looking forward to see what the fall out would be on Raw. However little did I know that a disaster in booking and a terrible show awaited me.Good PointsKennedy is back and already lined up in a feudAfter pushing Regal at the KOTR and then not having him on Backlash, Regal was finally put in to a feud with none other than the returning Mr. Kennedy. I am interested to see where this feud goes as although it is a bit down the card for Kennedy after being pushed in to main event status over the last few months.New feud for JerichoWas great to see a new feud started between HBK and Jericho after what happened at Backlash. Jericho claimed that HBK feigned his injury in his match against Batista during his Highlight Reel section. The only problem is where does this leave Batista? Unless we have Batista vs. Undertaker for the fiftieth time there is not much out there for him. Although I’m looking forward to the prospect of another HBK ...
WWE Backlash Review
2008-04-29 22:13:00
It’s always a hard job to follow Wrestlemania as the next PPV which normally shows with Backlash. Normally Backlash is an event with a couple of decent matches but not much storyline movement as most of this would have happened at Mania and the WWE wouldn’t want to change direction that quickly. So Backlash is always an event I go in to with low expectations but hope to be surprised by.Good PointsMatt Hardy wins the US titleGreat to see Matt Hardy and MVP kicking off the show and Matt Hardy building on his comeback push with a title victory. It was an obvious result to guess but needed to happen as the US title had been on MVP for far too long. I hope this now frees up MVP for new feuds as he is my talent to watch for this year.Nice ending to Edge vs. Undertaker matchAgain it was obvious that Undertaker was going to hold on to his title but it was nice how they ended the match. The match ended with Undertaker failing to let go of his submission move for long after the bell forcing ...
TNA iMPACT Review - Thursday 24th April 2008
2008-04-27 21:19:00
After a hectic week last week on iMPACT I was looking forward to see what was going to happen this week and if it could be just as crazy.Good PointsImprovements to SacrificeThankfully TNA have seen sense and done what we expected them to and made the title match at Sacrifice a triple threat adding Kurt Angle to the Steiner, Samoa Joe match. They spent a good amount of time on iMPACT building all three guys and having Steiner interfere in the Angle vs. Samoa Joe match was the right move.Knockouts are interesting againAfter some dull weeks before Lockdown TNA are back on a roll with this division with good matches and adding an interesting stipulation to the Knockouts match at Sacrifice which is going to see on Knockout getting their head shaved. This is the first I have heard of something like this happening in a women’s match and after the Britney Spears head shaving incident I think this will get some media attention.Karen AngleGood to see her storyline continuing. They need to devo ...
WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 25th April 2008
2008-04-26 17:04:00
After a Raw that will be remembered more for the presidential candidates than for the quality of show I was hoping Smackdown could provide my entertainment this week.Good PointsMore non wrestling segmentsI was glad to see lots more talking with segments involving Edge and CMP Punk as well as MVP and Matt Hardy being given time. I thought over all there was a better balance between wrestling and non wrestling segments. The only things thy need to do is break these segments up by not having too much talking in the first hour in the first hour and having more in the last hour.Push for CM PunkWas great to see CM Punk after Monday’s incidents where they dropped the ball with him to be put in the match of the night against Edge. Those two were given mic time and time for a decent match. Hope the consistency improves for CM Punk’s push.Good Recap VideoWas great to se again at the start of the show a video recap of what has been happening over the last few weeks. This should be made mandat ...
WWE Raw Review - 21st April 2008
2008-04-23 15:00:00
This week it was time for the much hyped three hour Raw special which was going to feature the return of the King of the Ring tournament but after all it’s hype it wasn’t the King of the Ring we went home talking about.Good PointsThe Presidential Candidates invade RawThis is one of the classic examples of how far ahead WWE are of TNA. For the last week the wrestling world has been raving about the Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe match from Lockdown but this week the whole world including international press and media are talking about what happened on Raw. After Mayweather at Mania WWE are getting just about as many column inches for having the three major presidential candidates appear on video to address the WWE fans. Yes their speeches may have been terrible and corny at best but they’ve got people talking. I think McCain beat everyone hands down with his video message but I still like the line “can you smell what Barack is cooking.”Solid cardYou won’t get a more stacked raw ca ...
TNA iMPACT Review - Thursday 17th April 2008
2008-04-20 13:20:00
After such a history making PPV that changed the direction of TNA I was excited to see what they were going to do on this week’s iMPACT, how were they going to bring in the new era?Good PointsSamoa JoeAlthough he didn’t wrestle this week on iMPACT he had some great promo time and talked like a champion. Would have liked to see him in the ring but a good start to his title reign none the less.UnpredictabilityThis week’s iMPACT saw more title changes than Lockdown. Petey Williams was handed a shot at the X-Division title by Scott Steiner and cashed it in after Lethal’s match with Devine to win the belt. Then the tag titles were made vacant in a crazy chain of events which saw Kaz and Eric Young win the belts only to be stripped of them because Eric Young and Super Eric are two different people well according to Eric Young they are. This was the funniest and most interesting storyline of the night as Jim Cornette tried to get to the bottom of the situation.Push for Matt MorganAfte ...
WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 18th April 2008
2008-04-19 12:20:00
It was time for the second TV show in a week from the UK as Smackdown like raw came to us from the O2 Arena in London. After a terrible show last week I wasn’t expecting much from this one.Good PointsUse of Chris JerichoOk he may have been mishandled since his return and he may have been bumped in to a non wrestling role as special guest referee for the HBK / Batista match but he is running with it. He is getting good TV time with his Highlight Reel becoming a semi regular segment of Raw and Smackdown. Twice in the space of one week Jericho was left laying as he has now been on the receiving end of both HBK and Batista’s finishers.Big win for HornswoggleHornswoggle has to go down as the most successful midget in WWE history. After being pushed in to major storylines the fans have really taken to him and this week he registered a big win against Matt Striker.Using all the big guys in one match. As you know I’m not a fan of Khali or Mark Henry but the way in which WWE are using thos ...
TNA Lockdown Review
2008-04-19 11:58:00
Sunday night was a night for TNA to make history after one of the biggest builds to a match in TNA history it was time for Samoa Joe to put his career on the line against Kurt Angle for the chance to become TNA Heavyweight champion. The card also featured a stack Lethal Lockdown match and an array of other matches in the only PPV of the year promoted by any wrestling company where all matches take place inside the six sides of steel.Good PointsPush for Johnny DevineAfter months of being Team 3D’s sidekick finally Johnny Devine was given a push on his own after a strong showing in the Xscape match. Although Lethal won I thought they built Johnny well as a new opponent for him and Consequences Creed didn’t have a bad outing either so wll done to TNA for freshening up the X-Division.Knockouts back on trackAfter being bored in recent months by the Knockouts division they did good at Lockdown. First we had a big win for Roxxi Laveaux in the Queen of the Cage match which establishes her ...

WWE Raw Review - 14th April 2008
2008-04-17 11:18:00
Raw came to my home country of jolly old England this week. I always enjoy the Raw shows the WWE produce from countries outside the USA as for me it always seems to add to the excitement of the show. I was hoping that the creative team could use this platform to bounce back from last week’s disappointment.Good PointsUnpredictability is backIn one of the most unpredictable moments in Raw for some weeks Mickie James won the Women’s championship beating Beth Phoenix in the centre of the ring. Now most people probably used this match as a time for a beer run or to go to the toilet so will be kicking themselves that they missed it. Not sure where this leaves the Glamazon now after being built as a monster just to lose clean to a simple pinning combination and not even on PPV but it did make for great entertainment. The rise of Carlito and SantinoIn only the second week of their build they beat Kendrik and London to win the number one contenders spot for the tag team championship. The WWE ...

WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 11th April 2008
2008-04-12 12:33:00
After delivering in spades last week with a great show I was wondering if Smackdown could keep that momentum going until Backlash. I knew Smackdown had to an off day soon as shows on the whole have been a lot better lately but was hoping this wouldn’t be the one.Good PointsBatista / HBK feudFinally the writing team are moving the feud away from them arguing over Ric Flair and no we are moving on to their own reasons to dislike each other. We also finally almost got to a physical confrontation between after Batista ducked out of Sweet Chin Music and HBK slipped out of the Batista Bomb.Natalya NeidhartNatalya got her first formal introduction on Smackdown after last week appearing as a mystery Diva. Yes all you long time wrestling fans will know her as daughter of Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart a star of the 80s and 90s in the then WWF. Natalya or Nattie as some may know her as gave a great promo and teaming with Victoria has a great feud going with Michelle McCool.Big ShowBig Show is do ...
WWE Raw Review - 7th April 2008
2008-04-09 21:41:00
After an exciting episode of Raw last week and with only three episodes to go before Backlash I was hoping for more of the same this week but as I was to find out later that consistency continues to not be the creative teams strong point.Good PointsHighlight ReelIt was a bit different this week with the section being dominated by Jericho’s two guests HBK and Batista with Jericho taking a backseat. The verbal battles back and forward are great we just need to see both of them in some in-ring action to keep the feud bubbling until Backlash.Push for Carlito and MorellaFinally they have found something to do with two of my favourite wrestlers on Raw. They are now the comedy heel tag team of raw and the creative team booked them well in a non-title win against the two dullest guys on Raw Rhodes and holly. If Carlito and Morella are given some mic time they could get over very quickly.Focus on the main eventIt was good to see the WWE really pushing the main event giving it a high proportio ...
WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 4th April 2008
2008-04-06 23:44:00
Tonight was Smackdown’s chance to hit the ground running after Wrestlemania as they started their run to Backlash. After a very strong Raw I was looking forward to see wht Smackdown had to offer.Good PointsStrong OpeningEdge’s crew started off the show in the ring with Edge and Chavo bemoaning the fact that they are no longer champions. Vickie Guerrero though helped the heel faction in to an upbeat mood as rematches for both titles were announced for Backlash but this wasn’t all as they announced a brother vs. brother / champion vs. champion match for the main event with Kane taking on the Undertaker. It was a great way to kick off a show.Batista / HBK feudIt was predicted that these two were going to feud but how they built it on Smackdown was great. Shawn still trying to come to terms with retiring Ric Flair and making sense of the situation during an in ring promo was interrupted by Batista who went on to question Shawn’s motives. Batista got in to his head and got him doubt ...
TNA iMPACT Review - Thursday 3rd April 2008
2008-04-06 23:06:00
After WWE’s recent Wrestlemania extravaganza TNA needed to start pushing this week to get hold of those viewers who are excited for wrestling again and get some attention to their upcoming PPV Lockdown. So as always here are my good and bad points of this week’s show.Good PointsFormulaEvery week the formula of TNA shows gets better and better. This week the show started with a video recap of all the recent incidents in TNA. I believe that every weekly show should start with a video recap as weekly shows are about getting new viewers to your show so that they will buy the PPV so they need to know what is going on and your existing fan base needs to be reminded of recent events just in case they have forgotten something that happened or missed a recent episode.Good booking of Lethal Lockdown feudAfter my plea last week TNA have improved their booking of Lethal Lockdown and as per my suggestion they broke the feuds down in to singles and tag matches with AJ Styles & Tomko going up aga ...
WWE Raw Review - 31st March 2008
2008-04-03 00:39:00
The episode of Raw after Wrestlemania is a very important show. This show sets the scene for what we can expect in the upcoming year until next Wrestlemania. It is also a very hard show to book coming off the biggest show of the year as nothing can compare to it and many of the fans will ether be suffering from burn out or have unrealistic expectations on what is going to happen next.Good PointsFreshnessThe writers did a great job of using tonight’s show to change the direction of Raw. JBL has emerged as the new challenger for Randy Orton’s title, Matt Hardy came through the crowd to beat on Randy Orton, Batista was seen backstage and Cryme Time returned. Now you may think that JBL and Matt Hardy don’t deserve main event pushes but when you are trying to freshen the product up you need to slingshot people in to the main event scene that haven’t been there or at least haven’t been in the picture for some time. The return of Tag Team wrestlingThis week on Raw we were treated to ...
Wrestlemania 24 Review
2008-03-31 14:08:00
As the show kicked off the arena was a sight to behold with hundreds of thousands worth of dollars going in to set up one of the most impressive Wrestlemania sets of all time and I was starting to look forward to a Wrestlemania which had potential to be a highly memorable evening. Here is my match by match run down from last night’s show.Belfast Brawl: JBL (RAW) Vs. Finlay (SmackDown)This match as expected was just a glorified hardcore match. They knew they couldn’t do many big spots and bumps because of the Money in the Bank match happening later but both competitors provided us with a solid start. It was good to see Hornswoggle back at Finlay’s side but no Vince McMahon which showed you how much he thought of his own storyline. Highlight of the match was Finlay’s suicide dive in to a trash can lid.Winner: JBLMoney-in-the-Bank Ladder Match: Mr. Kennedy (RAW) Vs. Shelton Benjamin (ECW) Vs. Chris Jericho (RAW) Vs. Carlito (RAW) Vs. MVP (SmackDown) Vs. Vs. CM Punk (ECW) Vs. John M ...
TNA iMPACT Review - Thursday 27th March 2008
2008-03-30 22:08:00
In all the hullabuloo of Wrestlemania week TNA were this week trying to make an impact of their own with a live show instead of a pre-record and the much hyped return of Sting.Good PointsGo live every weekA live iMPACT had a much better feel to it than their pre-record broadcasts they usually put out every week. I know it’s more risky and more costly to go live but for the viewer it adds an edge to a show. There were a few mistakes with bad camera shots and so forth but the positives far outweighed the negatives.UnpredictabilityThe show kicked off with a shot of Booker T and Robert Roode fighting through the crowd. Its an unusual move to a start show mid action but I thought it was different and added an edge to the show. The viewers who were tuning in to the show for the first time may not have been able to follow what was happening to begin with but as it was exciting it will have encouraged them to get in to the show and as it happens the situation was explained straight after thr ...
WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 28th March 2008
2008-03-29 14:20:00
Smackdown was the WWE’s last chance to push Wrestlemania to try and get a few more buys for the PPV this Sunday. So I went in expecting the best Smackdown we had seen in some time. I knew that all the major develops would have happened on Raw this week if they were going to happen but I still thought they would pull out all the stops to continue the Wrestlemania buzz.Good PointsWrestlemania themeTo get people excited for Wrestlemania a lot of the matches tonight had a Wrestlemania theme with an over the top rope elimination match between some of the competitors who are taking part in the Battle Royal this weekend, an inter-promotional match for Batista and having the Money in the Bank briefcase above the ring for matches featuring wrestlers who were going to star in that match. Some solid matchesIt was up to the stars of ‘Money in the Bank’ to provide the wrestling quality this week for Smackdown as the matches which featured CM Punk vs. John Morrison and Chris Jericho vs. MVP bei ...
Wrestlemania 24 - My Predictions
2008-03-27 19:05:00
The WWE are branding Wrestlemania 24 as “The Biggest Wrestlemania Under The Sun” making it’s reference to the fact that for the first time it is taking place in Florida and from the open air arena known as The Citrus Bowl. The tagline can’t be making reference to the biggest card or the biggest venue for a Wrestlemania and I highly doubt it will do the biggest amount of Pay Per Views buys so it’s only in Florida they can get away with a tagline like this.I know we are yet to see what happens on Smackdown this Friday night but as we stand these are my match-by-match predictions for this years’ Wrestlemania starting from the bottom of the card.ECW Championship MatchWhat a mess this has been. For many years the WWE have put on an inter-promotional Battle Royal as a dark match before Wrestlemania and chucked in on the DVD extras but this year we were lead to believe that for the first time we would be seeing this on the main show. For once the WWE had come up with an interestin ...
WWE Raw Review - 24th March 2008
2008-03-26 23:54:00
The Raw before Wrestlemania is always the most important Raw of the year. This is when the wrestlers and the creative team should have created a huge buzz by and the show should do the best ratings of the year. The viewing rating for the Raw before Mania is very important at it affects the number of buys the PPV does. All the feuds should be laid out by now and this episode of Raw should just be a preview of what to expect this weekend. So with this in mind I was really looking forward to see if the WWE delivered.Good PointsGreat StartThe first five minutes of Raw were great as John Cena delivered one of his strongest in ring promos for some time. Whatever you think about Cena he knows how to work the mic and get a crowd going. However after this it became a mess which I will talk about in my bad points section later.Good time given to Flair and MichaelsAfter weeks and weeks of little bits Flair and Michaels got a fair chunk of time on Raw for their in ring segment. I think Flair deser ...
WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 21st March 2008
2008-03-23 19:38:00
So Friday brought the 2nd to last Smackdown before Mania and a much needed time for them to impress the audience at home as we get closer to Wrestlemania. Here are my thoughts on the good and bad points of this weeks show.Good PointsThe VIP LoungeHands down the best part of this weeks show. MVP really raised his game on the mic as he and Jericho took it in turn to poke fun at each other. This is great solid common sense booking by the creative team to build a feud within the ‘Money in the Bank’ match and having the host of ‘The Highlight Reel’ feud with the host of the ‘The VIP Lounge.’ WWE just need to be careful not to forget about the other guys in MITB because if they aren’t spotlighted then the fans are going to think they are just to make up the numbers which may be true but for an entertaining match the fans need to believe that they all have a chance of winning.Creative direction with EdgeAfter week upon week of running from the Undertaker and throwing obstacles i ...
TNA Impact Review - Thursday 20th March 2008
2008-03-23 19:35:00
Here is my rundown of the good and bad points of this weeks TNA iMPACT.Good PointsGreat out of ring segmentsTNA are really doing well with these parts of the show. I like the segments with Mike Tenay when he brings together two feuding wrestlers together to air there grievances. It’s different to what the WWE do and brings in a chat show type element to the show. I’m also loving the rough cuts series they are doing with Kip James and BG James. It’s like having a programme within a programme and bring a reality TV style element to the show.Building Kurt Angle for LockdownTNA are showing how the WWE should be handling the Floyd Mayweather / Big Show build up. Kurt Angle got to showcase his phenomenal amateur wrestling skills with a public workout against some supposed mixed martial artists. They are doing well at trying to create a MMA / Wrestling cross over. Finally a well worked endingAfter weeks of complaining finally TNA booked a proper finish to a show. The show ended with Stin ...
WWE Raw Review - 17th March 2008
2008-03-20 00:16:00
Two weeks away from Wrestlemania and the last week of Triple Threat Takeover, I was really looking forward to this week’s Raw and it delivered in spades with their best offering for some time. The show with a few minor exceptions was well paced and very entertaining and developed a lot of feuds nicely for Mania.Good PointsA push for JerichoWith only two episodes of Raw to go before Mania it was great to see him opening the show with his Highlight Reel section. His guest this week was the Big Show and after a good war of words between the two a match was made between them for later on in the show for the Intercontinental title. After being poorly handled since his return I hope they continue his push and that he wins ‘Money in the Bank’ at Mania.Good storyline developmentWith a few exceptions all the matches served well to develop storylines for Wrestlemania. Umaga was dominant again beating Kendrik and London, Jericho got himself disqualified to keep the belt but ended up being k ...
TNA Impact Review - Thursday 13th March 2008
2008-03-16 22:17:00
After a disappointing Destination X TNA had their first iMPACT since the PPV and the first on the road to Lockdown on April 13th. I was interested to see if TNA would get my enthusiasm back for the product and get me excited about Lockdown.Good PointsSolid OpeningNow as most you know only a fraction of the viewers who watch a weekly wrestling TV show will stump up the money to buy a PPV. Now because of this a lot of fans who tuned in to your product the week before the PPV may not know what happened so to make sense for your TV viewers you have to use your first show back to really convey to the fans what happened and how these happenings have affected the storylines and feuds. So TNA were sensible to use Jim Cornette in the ring to let the fans know what was happening. This lead to him announcing a Lethal Lockdown match for the next PPV and that Christian Cage and Tomko would be captains. This is one heck of a push for Tomko which I did expect but makes the booking team stupid for hav ...
WWE Smackdown Review - Friday 14th March 2008
2008-03-15 15:48:00
We are starting to get the business end now with two weeks to go until the biggest show of the year. This is the time for tight well planned out TV shows and shows which entertain the casual fans in order to get as many people talking about it and buying the PPV a possible. So did Smackdown do its job this week in getting us ready for Mania.Poor StartMany people will say that the main events and the endings of weekly wrestling shows that are the most important thing but I disagree to me the opening segment of a show is the most important. Unless you are channel surfing the only way you are going to watch the main event is if the opening of the show hooks you. It may be very formulaic but I enjoy seeing a non wrestling segment opening a show to set the scene for the rest of the show. If a show starts with a match which has nothing to do with the rest of the card and if that match is not interesting you are going to be watching with nothing to look forward to and not enjoying what you ar ...
