FIGHT 2 da DEATH in Sukhumvit~!!
2008-07-04 15:16:31
Looks like the hunter has bitten more than he can chew~!!Too bad I was in a hurry, thus I didn't know how this battle ended. There are two possible scenarios:1. The moth gets tired, stops struggling and gets swallowed by the lizard.2. The lizard's jaw gets tired, he relaxes his grip and the moth escapes.... 3.. 2.. 1.. Sukhumvit 6 plot fetches record 1mil baht a square wah
2008-07-03 13:48:00
A land sale on Sukhumvit soi 6 has set a record at one million baht per square wah, according to the property agency CB Richard Ellis Thailand (CBRE). The price of the three-rai site in front of Jaisamarn Full Gospel Church beat the earlier record of 950,000 baht per square wah (1 wah = 4 square meters) offered by Central Retail Corp for a nine-rai (1 rai = 1,600 square meters) plot on Phloenchit Road owned by the British Embassy in mid-2006. ''It's a new era of land price adjustment. The market price in the past few years jumped from 650,000 baht per square wah due to very limited land plots in the area,'' said CBRE managing director Aliwassa Pathnadabutr. But she warned that high prices were likely to ease except for the best locations near mass transit. An industry source said the soi 6 plot was owned by an Indian-Thai textile businessman based in the Phahurat area. He bought the plot after the 1997 financial crisis and sold it to another Indian-Thai businessman for 1.2 billion ba.. ...
Temporary Sukhumvit Lake (*glub glub*)
2008-06-30 15:57:28
One particular GHASTLY thunderstorm turned Sukhumvit 39 and 49 into one friggin' LAKE.I was lucky I was inside a van, so I managed to keep my feet (and everything else~!!) dry. Others who weren't so fortunate had to wade in water that reached up to the calf. Eeeeeeeuuuuw~~~ Who knows WHAT was in the murky liquid~?!This restaurant deeper in Sukhumvit 39 was prepared... It actually had SAND BAGS~!! Wahahahaaaaa~~~!!!!The thing is... considering that both Sukhumvit 39 and 49 are where a whole bunch of moneyed Japanese expats stay, I think it's just SCANDALOUS that the sois are left to gurgle and rot in so much H2O, when other parts of Sukhumvit drain better~!!Look at this: This was Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55) a few hours after the thunderstorm stopped. The road was DRY~~!!!OK, so the traffic was hellish, but hey, this is SUKHUMVIT~~!!!Compare THAT with this VDO clip of Sukhumvit 39 which I recorded from the van... You'll see that the water actually reached until the pavement~!! There were actu ...
Ten-Sui
2008-06-28 16:05:38
This is a review that was almost never written. We arrived at Ten-Sui in Sukhumvit 29 at 2:15 pm and was promptly told that lunch time was over. We were VERRRRY annoyed as the restaurant claimed on its advertisement that last order for lunch was 2:30 pm. (and don't nobody make any smartass comments about me sleeping 'til afternoon and having such a "late" lunch~!!). Swearing under my breath and getting ready to leave (my brain was already racing 1,000 km/sec about WHAT to say about this restaurant if anyone asks my opinion about it), we were suddenly told that YES, the restaurant WAS still open, and YES, we still could have the lunch set that was advertised to be 380 baht. Thankful to not having to go out into the scorching sun in search of an alternative lunch place, we quickly made our orders (identical 'tensui hanaka gozen' lunch sets) and were served salad and chawanmushi (traditional Japanese egg custard) - which we inhaled and finished in a few seconds (HEY, it was over ...

Bangkok Police Laugh Training
2008-06-24 23:26:01
The Thai police have consistently scored high on the "Most Hated" list - out of all the branches of the Thai government, people see them as the dirtiest and most corrupt (the Customs Department has the dubious honors of usually being second place). It brings to mind a group of traffic police officers stopping motorists (READ: suckaz) on Sukhumvit Road and extorting an x amount of baht to supplement their pocket money. With this kind of not-so-glowing reputation, what can one do about it, except maybe LAUGH~?? laughter is da best medicinestreetsmartsukhumvit@gmail.com sukhumvit bangkok thailand ...
Sukhumvit POP Quiz: Name That Dara~!!
2008-06-24 02:00:00
Anyone knows the name of this dara (star)~?? I met him in Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55) and even asked for his autograph and pic, but I "conveniently forgot" to ask for his name~~!!! KYAAAAAA~~!! All I remember was I saw his film before on TV (I forgot whether it was HBO or Cinemax or whatever)... I was flipping channels and came across some Thai movie about giant killer crocodiles terrorizing the population on some Thai beach paradise... The weird thing was... Everybody in the film spoke English~!! Even the locals... and the police officers~!!This dara played the bad guy... some greedy real estate guy who also got torn apart by one of the vicious crocs...********************SSS to dara: You played in some crocodile movie, right~??Dara: Oh, that movie was HORRIBLE~~!!!!Dara's friend: Which movie was this~??SSS: A Thai movie about giant killer crocodiles... They escaped from some zoo and ate a lot of humans...Dara (quickly changing the subject): So, which school did you go to here in Bangkok~? ...
Go to BED with me~??
2008-06-19 15:43:08
Fluffy pillows... Crisp white sheets... Low seductive pink llights... Champagne on mattress... YOW-ZA~~!!!!Not to mention the endless possibilites of suggestive innuendos:- I went to BED with _____ last night- Why don't we go to BED together tonight~??- OMG, I saw _____ and _____ in BED~~!!!! KYAAA~~!!!!I'm of coz, talking about the BED Supperclub, the chi-chi night hang-out place of the very socially aware, fashion conscious and moneyed denizens of Sukhumvit (and their hangers-on).I have't been back to BED (located in Sukhumvit 11) for quite some time, but a friend from Shanghai visited Sukhumvit and before I knew it, I was plopped up on an immaculately-white lounge bed, being served by waitresses in air hostess uniform (the BED changes its theme regularly) on the second floor of what some people claim to be Thailand's hottest club.Unfortunately, the purply pink lights made it hard for me to see what I was eating.... Vicious Katoey Attack on Sukhumvit~!!
2008-06-18 03:28:00
There are SO many non-fiction books about Bangkok, and about Sukhumvit. But I swear the story I'm about to tell you is 100% TRUE.********************My Korean friend (let's call her M) who also lives in Sukhumvit got a very late night call (around 1 am actually). On the other line was her male friend, visiting from Korea."Please come get me~!!" her friend (let's call him V) shouted breathlessly on the phone. "I just caught a THIEF~!!!"********************Imagine how confused and weirded out M must had felt... Not to mention sleepy~!! (She's an early sleeper, unlike me~!!). ********************"V~?! Is that you~??" M asked. "What happened~?? Where are you~??""I'm in front of a small park between Sukhumvit 8 and 10", V gasped.. Please hurry up~!!" "OK, OK. I'm coming. Just hold on~!!" M hung up and scampered to the Chuwit Garden (click HERE to see the park in daylight). She was so shocked when she found there was a POLICE truck parked in front of Chuwit Garden. And she almost had a h... ...
HOBS (House of Beers)
2008-06-15 15:31:49
I have seen the light and been converted. It is now official: SSS drinks beer~~!!!!!From now on, that is. And only the expensive kind. As in imported European (Belgian) kind.Don't get me wrong. I enjoy a glass of wine now and then, a cocktail here and there, Japanese sake to go with my sushi or Korean soju with BBQ, and so on and so forth...But I just never liked beer. I can stomach Asahi or Heineken or Budweiser (Kloster was actually my so-called "favorite"), but I truly abhor the rest. I swear, Singha beer tastes like PEE (not as if I actually TASTED pee before, but... y'know what I mean). And don't even get me started with Leo or Chang or whatever animal the beer people come up with next. That is... until I found HOBS (House of Beers).Situated right across J-Avenue (Thonglo 15) on the ground floor of Penny's Balcony, HOBS is actually slated to officially open next month, but a friend knows the manager/partner and paved the way for my enlightenment a bit earlier. ALLELUIAAAA~~!!!!!HOBS ...
That Indescribable Sukhumvit Feeling...
2008-06-13 15:14:34
This is authentic Sukhumvit mood~!! Imagine yourself inside a TAXI cruising along the road, with the radio on full blast... You get the idea. In case you're wondering where on earth the background music comes from, it's from the "highly atmospheric" double CD, Radio Thailand: Transmissions From the Tropical Kingdom (you can buy it on Amazon HERE). It is a collection of Thai radio transmissions from 1989 to 2004 and chock-full of luuk thung, mor lam, commercials, pop, you name it... Check out the monks chanting at the end of the video~!!Perfect for those of you suffering from an incurable case of Sukhumvit nostalgia~!! khid theung, khid theung~!!streetsmartsukhumvit@gmail.com sukhumvit bangkok thailand ...
Mr. Grumpy in Sukhumvit~!!
2008-06-12 14:24:00
WANTED: a morning person energetic, dedicated and FEARLESS enough to teach the grumpiest expat in Sukhumvit a LESSON he shall never forget~!!This is Carl Harrison, the first victim (as far as everyone knows) of Mr. Grumpy in the Oriental Coffee Shop (located on the 5th floor Emporium). And this what happened to him:May 24, 2008 Emporium, Friday morning 10am, food floor, Oriental coffee/cake shop. I went in there for breakfast, all seating is on stools in the window and there were only 2 other customers in there and plenty of seating. Ordered my food, sat at the stool and read the paper. 10 mins later I head some raised voice behind me in a "complaining" sort of way, then this guy in shorts/shirt, 50ish, blonde/grey hair, glasses grabs another paper and slams it down next to me. He slams his phones down and mumbles. I was staring him by this point wondering why someone can be so damn unpleasant to staff and in front of people at that time in the morning, and if he looked at me ... ...

Virtual Sukhumvit
2008-06-06 14:41:17
Weirder than weird~!! Sukhumvit actually exists in the virtual world of "Second Life"~!! I kid you not~!!Admittedly, it looks remarkably different from the real-life Sukhumvit... In "Second Life", Sukhumvit is right next to the "ocean", made up of pixels and creepily "clean" and "organized" (coordinates are 220 220 21). From the deepest part of my heart (NOT~!!)
2008-06-05 01:30:00
1). If your lover betrayed you, what will your reaction be? * Wait 'til the bastard's fast asleep (*sleeping pills cough cough*), then proceed to cut off his willy, chop it into teeny tiny lil' pieces, then spread 'em out for the soi dogs to feast on - waste not, want not~!! 2). What will you do if you do not share the same feelings as the person who likes you? * Like ripping off a Band-Aid from skin - the more speed, the less pain~!! 3). Do you find yourself cheating on your loved one? * I'm a Virgo. Virgos are very loyal (or at least they're supposed to be. HAH~!!). Besides, Virgos are also paranoid about germs. I can't have multiple partners coz cooties are, like, so NOT hot. 4). Would you rather have your ex replace you with someone more beautiful or uglier than you? * There's NO ONE more beautiful than me. The whole question's moot. 5). What's your ideal partner like? * Good looking, of coz. This comes first - and I don't give a rat's ass about those bleedin' ... ...

2008-06-03 02:57:00
My baby doesn't bawl in the middle of the night and ruin my beauty sleep...My baby doesn't stink of pee/poo/sweat and it poses no danger to my expensive interior decor and blingin' rocks. My baby doesn't need food, clothes, diapers, vaccines, milk, toys, etc., etc...Nevertheless, my baby has given me a new kind of love that is so deep, so lasting and so thrilling that I am a hardcore addict now.My baby keeps me calm and helps me sleep peacefully. In fact, I can't imagine enduring just ONE day without my baby~!!Enough hints for y'all~??Yeap, my beloved baby is none other than THIS website of mine: Street Smart Sukhumvit (Quite obvious, isn't it~??)Exactly one year from today, in the quiet hours before dawn in June 3, 2007 somewhere in Sukhumvit Road... Isaan in Sukhumvit
2008-05-30 06:43:04
I found this Isaan restaurant by accident~!!I was starvin' like hell one rainy night in Sukhumvit 22... It was late, so restaurants were closed already, and I was craving REAL food, not just crappy pub grub~!!!I was more than delighted to find "Hi - Isaan", a homey-looking restaurant near the pak soi, complete with waitresses dressed in traditional Isaan garb and khaen ambience music~!!At first I was doubtful whether the food was gonna be authentic Isaan (coz I spied a farang table nearby), but I wasn't disappointed~!! The somtam was tangy and spicy and they even had khao niew (sticky rice)~!!This is going to my list of where I should take (picky) foreign friends (who are toooo wimpy to eat on the street) to eat Isaan food~!!Portions were a bit small, though... and of coz, the price was higher than if you eat on the street (somtam was 80 baht here) ... but hey, I wasn't in the mood to eat in the rain~!! Brush With Fame on Sukhumvit - PART 2
2008-05-27 23:30:00
I accidentally met Thai superstar Tata Young today~~~!!!!!!!!!! *fansqueeeeaaaaal~!!!!!!!!!!!!*So there I was, in Samitivej Hospital in Sukhumvit 49, waiting for my turn at the E.N.T (Ears, Nose and Throat) Center (and suffering from a verrrrry itchy throat and non-existent voice)... when suddenly someone came and browsed through the newspapers in front of me. She looked verrrry familiar, I thought..."OMIGOD, it's TATA YOUNG~~!!!!" I squealed to myself and quickly followed her to her seat. She was wearing ballet flats, leggings, a baggy shirt and scarf around her neck, her tea-colored hair tied up in a loose bun.I mustered enough courage and sat next to her."Excuse me," I said in English (I know she speaks English very well, her being a "luuk khreung") and in my best "normal" voice (which still sounded like a frog stuck in my throat UGH~!!)."Kha~??" she inquired in her high-spirited, peppy voice."You're Tata Young, right~?? Could I please get your signature?""Oh sure, sure~!!" she said ...
Jan Dara
2008-05-26 13:58:54
The next time you grumble that your family sucks like hell, be very grateful that you're not a member of Jan Dara's family~!! The tragic character Jan Dara was born into a wealthy family in turbulent 1930s Siam. His mother died giving birth to him, thus earning him the poisonous scorn of his father, Khun Luang. Khun Luang made sure that Jan had a miserable time growing up and never failed to remind the boy that he was responsible for his mother’s demise. Later on, one of Jan’s aunts, Waad came into the household and formed a close relationship with him (SO close that it was uncomfortable to watch). Khun Luang, who was a womanizer, unfortunately raped her and she gave birth to a daughter (Jan’s half-sister) named Kaew. Kaew was terribly spoiled by Khun Luang and she was taught to hate Jan from a very early age. Unsurprisingly, Kaew grew up to be a very spiteful girl. In the meantime, the licentious Khun Luang was bedding every female he could get his hands on (not exactly a hard t ...

Dear My Dearest Contacts
2008-05-24 03:22:00
This is SO HARD to do. And it's all becoz of Noel's fault~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!For the FIRST time in the history of SSS, I am feeling stuck... This is the reason:I got tagged... AGAIN. This time the rules are:Open a window and view your Multiply contacts. Answer the following categories by leaving descriptions of the HEADSHOT of the person to whom your answer refers to. You can either be precise or indistinct, leave as short or as much a description as you wish. The person you are pertaining to could be in YOUR OWN contacts list or in somebody else's contacts list as long as you view his/her posts. This is a way of letting that person (whether straight-forwardly or not) how you regard him/her. Lastly, you have to tag at least two people whom you've described in one of the 10 categories. So here we go... I'm gonna be as cryptic as possible~!! Can you recognize yourselves~?!1). Dear mysterious Audi Angel...
2008-05-23 01:48:00
I don’t know why I suddenly remembered this… considering that it happened a few years ago… Must be because of all this damn rain makin’ me feel sentimental~!! BAH~!! So there we were, my mom and I, in a TAXI going to the dressmaker’s in Sukhumvit 53. When the TAXI stopped across the dressmaker’s shop, my mom came out first because she was sitting on the left side (Bangkok motorists drive on the left side of the road). Imagine my surprise when I came out of the TAXI and didn’t find her on the spot where she was supposed to be~!! Then I suddenly realized that she was actually ROLLING on the ground a few steps away from me~!! (She must had fallen down when she was coming out of the TAXI~!!). I ran to her just as she stopped rolling. That was when I saw IT. Her left ring finger was bent in a VERY UNNATURAL angle. It was SO freaky~!! "Clean" Chuwit Garden in Sukhumvit~!!
2008-05-19 22:30:46
Considering what a notorious BAD BOY Chuwit Kamolvisit is, his park is such a goody-two-shoes~!!For those of you who aren't familiar with dear Chuwit, here's a crash course on Thailand's favorite mustached, straight-talkin', (naughty) massage tycoon-turned-politician media darling:- Chuwit Kamolvisit was originally known as Thailand's "sex king" - owner of numerous hi-so massage parlors offering scantily-clad ladies who would bathe and (AHEM) "massage" customers in private rooms (yeap, that's him topless on the right, surrounded by his lovely devoted "employees").- In 2003, he was allegedly the mastermind behind the razing of Sukhumvit Square, a commercial building situated between Sukhumvit 8 and 10 (supposedly, he "borrowed" a few military tanks to flatten the whole place around 4 am, when Sukhumvit Road was free of traffic). Here's a pic of what was left of Sukhumvit Square, which I got from the website bangkokeyes.com:And a few choice words for Chuwit himself:Fast-forward to the pr ...

The baami dude in front of the 7-11 shop around the pak soi of Thonglo
2008-05-16 23:15:37
So, I've been accused of pandering too much to the hi-so people of Sukhumvit. The proof? Recently I've been blabbing about aaaaaaaaall the things that cost too much (as well as toooo "academic"), such as:1). Big 'waste-of-time-and-money' Echo Karaoke (read it HERE and HERE)2). Restaurants like MK 'burn-your-dough-into-steam' Gold (read it HERE) 3). Capitalist art exhibitions on (European) cows (read it HERE), which will encourage people to eat costly beef instead of khao niew (sticky rice, a staple of Isaan food). And with all the rising prices (example: some motorcycle taxis now ask for 15 baht instead of 10 baht), my less-moneyed readers have been feeling a bit left out. Therefore, to turn this elitist tide around, may I present to you the glowing food review of:The baami (egg noodles) dude in front of the 7-11 shop around the pak soi (mouth of the soi) of Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55)~!! (sorry for the too-long title; didn't know what else to call it).Come rain or shine, this devoted baami d ...
Milly is (FINALLY) Home~!!
2008-05-13 07:30:00
I was ecstatic when I received a happy email from Laura, whose beloved dog Milly went missing in early March (read it HERE):On Saturday evening I was watching my two older sons playing football at Bangkok Patana School and I had a call from a lady saying she was sure that her neighbour was feeding Milly outside of his gate.  This lady had seen Milly's poster at the vet's in Thonglor 10 (where Milly disappeared).  Needless to say,  I've had many calls before so I wasn't putting my hopes up too much......... I was at soi 14 Pridi,  off 71 Sukhumvit in 15 minutes and meandered my way to some smaller sois............and there was Milly playing in the soi with another dog.  I got out of the car and called her name once.......she turned and crawled to me crying......and I did the same, silly me.....and got on all four and cuddled her.  The good Samaritan who had been feeding her is Khun Poom who wouldn't accept any money for having fed her for a month.
