Lodi Wine and Visitor Center
2008-05-10 18:08:00
Located halfway between Sacramento and Stockton on the way to the Bay Area, Lodi is California’s other wine destination. Lodi has long been California’s number one source of varietal grapes, and its old-vine Zinfandel has even achieved cult status among connoisseurs, yet few wine labels mention the area. That’s changing as an aggressive local growers’ group promotes the area’s grapes and wineries increasingly recognize their quality. As a result, Lodi is starting to gain credit on wine bottles. Your first stop on your Lodi wine county trip should be the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center. Learn about the local history, taste some local wine and pick up a wine trial map. Located only 35 minutes south of Sacramento and 90 minutes east of San Francisco - the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center is a must stop sight in the Northern California wine country. Lodi Wine & Visitor Center, 2545 W. Turner Rd. Lodi, CA 95242 Open Daily: 10:00am - 5:00 pm ...

Sutter Buttes - Yuba City California
2008-05-09 06:21:00
Yuba City's western horizon is dominated by the Sutter Buttes, renowned for being the "Smallest Mountain Range in the World." The range is actually circular with a diameter of 10 miles and covers an area of about 75 square miles. The mountains are the remnants of a volcano that has been dormant for over a million years. South Butte, the highest peak is 2,117 feet above sea level. North Butte is 1,863 feet and West Butte is 1,685 feet above sea level. Before modern levees and dams were built to contain the rivers, winter storms and spring run-off frequently turned the Sacramento Valley into an inland sea making the Sutter Buttes an island refuge for Indians, settlers and wildlife. The Buttes have had many names over the years. The Maidu Indians called them "Histum Yani" which translates as, "Middle Mountains of the Valley" or "Spirit Mountain" ...

St. George Reef Lighthouse
2008-04-29 05:35:00
About about eight miles northwest of Crescent City lies another lighthouse, St. George Reef. This one is a littler harder to get to since it is on a rocky Island out in the Pacific Ocean. The light was lit for the first time on October 20, 1892 and continued to shine until 1975 when it was abandoned. To view the St. George Reef Lighthouse from land, go north on the road that hugs the coast in Crescent City. When you arrive at the airport, turn left on Radio Road and follow it to the beach at its end. This is Point St. George, and the housing used for the keepers when they were ashore is adjacent to the parking area. The St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society offers helicopter tours out to the lighthouse weather permitting. ...
