Did Pirates Really Say "Arrrr"?
2007-06-06 20:43:41
Apparently not; Both that phrase and the accent that goes with it are strictly Hollywood. They originated with Robert Newton, the actor who played Long John Silver in the movies and on TV through much of the 1950s. Newton was from Dorset, in the Cotswolds district of southwest England, and the regional accent he brought to the movies included a rolled "r." - SlateDid Pirates Really Say "Arrrr"? - Slate ...

The True Historic Origins Of The Laugh-Out-Loud Cats?
2007-06-06 00:11:58
We all love LOLcats (and if you don't know what the hell I'm talking about then where have you been?) but do any of us actually know the origin? Not many people know this, but my great grandfather Aloysius "Gorilla" Koford, was also a cartoonist. From 1912-1913 he produced a comic strip which was featured in 17 newspapers, including the Philadephia Star-Democrat, the Tampa Telegraph, and the Santa Fe Good-Newser. The strip was entitled "the Laugh-Out-Loud Cats" and featured the exploits of one Meowlin Q. Kitteh (a sort of cat hobo-raconteur) and his young hapless kitten friend, Pip. The strip did not last long due to a run-in my great-grandfather had with none other than William Randolph Hearst.See, the Laugh-Out-Loud Cats was run by a one of Heart's competitors, so “Big Willy” (as Hearst was known in his day) used the bully pulpit of his media empire to hound and mock the efforts of my great-grandfather. Hearst scribes insinuated Aloysius was an actual trained gorilla and purpor ...

It's MOSTLY working.
2007-05-24 14:45:48
Right, so DNS settings are set and this blog now shows up as www.nosignalinput.co.uk as .blogspot.com now re-directs to this address. This means any incoming links to the blog will still show up as blogspot.com (if you hover over the link) but will re-direct to the new address, meaning you don't have to change anything on your side. There's one big problem though. If you type in www.nosignalinput.co.uk my website will load fine, but if you type in nosignalinput.co.uk the website won't load - at all. This is apparently a known problem by blogger (although they've still not given us a way to fix it) and is causing much frustration amongst people with custom domains and many posts on the Blogger Help Group.Apparently there's a fix here but I'm not too confident about trying it and I don't want to screw up the DNS settings now I've got them sorted.Everything is re-directing so I'm fine with that. I just have to hope that no-one types the URL in their address bar (like I'm that pop ...
Nosignalinput.co.uk Has Arrived!
2007-05-24 14:09:17
It's a momentous occasion here at No Signal Input as I've finally done the inevitable and registered my own domain name. The domain in question, nosignalinput.co.uk (.com was taken), currently forwards itself to nosignalinput.blogspot.com. So, if you hit nosignalinput.co.uk or www.nosignalinput.co.uk into your browser then you'll end up at this blog. Instead of getting your URL address bar showing nosignalinput.blogspot.com it'll show nosignalinput.co.uk.For the moment I'm having a bit of trouble re-directing my blogspot address to the .co.uk one because of DNS settings (which are a tad bit confusing to say the least) so if you go straight to the blogspot.com address (as all the incoming links here will) it'll still show up as blogspot.com. The reason for this is that it takes up to 48 hours for any DNS settings to take effect and changing the address in the blogger settings right now just re-directs my blog to a blank page (although the page source on the blank page does show the ...
'No More Fantasy MMO's! - Says EVE Online Boss.
2007-05-24 00:05:26
In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson questioned why MMO developers seem to be stuck in a rut. For once, a company CEO is making sense."I just don't understand why people do yet another fantasy game. Why make a clone of World of Warcraft?" said Petursson, in an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz."World of Warcraft is the perfect implementation of this [genre]. It's been done. Do something else. - gamesindustry.bizIt's obvious why developers continue to concentrate on dwarfs and elves - they want to echo World of Warcraft's immense success. Of course, whenever a highly successful product hits the market there are always people who want to cash in on their rival's success by emulating the product but, as Petursson pointed out, plenty have already done that and largely failed. What's needed now is the next big thing, the thing that can have a chance of knocking World of Warcraft off its high pedestal (although it's sure to be a though challe ...

About Me And This Blog
2007-05-23 20:08:50
About MeI'm Tom, a 19 year old student currently studying English & History at Leeds Metropolitan University.I began blogging, or something resembling that, around five years ago when I first got online. At this time I kept a poorly written diary of my daily life, thoughts, and feelings, on a website known as Opendiary. I made a number of good friends and realised that writing my feelings down helped a lot, especially when I recieved advice from fellow OD'ers.I eventually moved on from there as I struggled to persue my creativity through a layout I had begun to dislike. I arrived at Livejournal, a medium I'm sure you've all heard of. I was instantly captivated by the wonderous community over at LJ and still am today. I eventually became a paid member and started to fiddle around with the layout of my LJ, to get it looking exactly how I wanted, but still found it had it's limitations. It was then I discovered blogger where I am able to express my creativity to it's full potent ...

First Build in Second Life.
2007-05-17 22:09:50
I've been in Second Life since 2005 (give or take a few long breaks) but I've never actually had a shot at building anything. So, yesterday, I headed over to the ABC Island Sandbox (when I talk about SL I'll link locations with their SL url so you can go straight there!) and started creating. Here's what I came up with (as always, click the image to view them at their full size):It's not the best build in the world but I think it's a pretty good effort for my first time, even if the checkered design is horrible! It even has an opening and closing door (the darker area) although I can't take the credit for that because it was just ripped off a house I had bought earlier. I'm looking forward to playing around with building more since I find it highly enjoyable.I've also undergone a bit of a makeover, which was probably needed. Here's what I used to look like:That scooter was a nifty little thing! Here's what I look like now:I thought I'd see how she handled the pole! As you c ...

What I'm Playing: July 17th - 24th.
2007-05-16 00:12:49
I've had my DS Lite for a week now and already I've put in far more play time than I ever did with my neglected PSP (I haven't given up on it entirely - I just prefer my DS Lite at the moment). I only own two games as of now, Animal Crossing: Wild World and Mario Kart DS, but I just can't stop playing. The thing about the DS is that it's actually fun to use (unlike the PSP which can be extremely frustrating at times) - especially the touch screen aspect. Strangely I've been largely neglecting Mario Kart DS in favour of AC:Wild World, which I'm finding extremely addictive.AC:WW perfects a formula whereby it encourages the gamer to play the game in short bursts of time, as to avoid the gamer seeing too much in a short amount of time and, thus, becoming bored with the game rather quickly. Since the game is played in real time certain events occur on different days (having some real life events) and certain items/people appear on different days (Tom Nook's shop stocks different ite ...
Scoble Banned From Second Life
2007-05-16 00:12:26
Ex-Microsoft blogger Robert Scoble has been banned from Second Life for allowing his 12 year old son to use his Second Life account;I let my son use my Second Life account. I’m not allowed to do that. Only 18-year-olds are allowed to play in Second Life. Yesterday I publicly broke that rule by having Patrick build me a new part of my office while I was on stage running a panel discussion titled “a higher resolution.” The panel discussion wasn’t all that good cause I was incompetently running it, but Patrick was having fun building stuff and showing off how Second Life worked. At the end of the session Beth Goza, a Linden Labs employee, caught up to Patrick on screen and said “you’re toast.” (We had both been warned about the rules before, so we both knew what that meant — we were about to be kicked and banned). - ScobleThe irony is that Linden Labs is in no position to ban someone for letting an underage child to use Second Life when they recently removed the credit card ...

Second Life - Breaking The Strict Boundaries Of Reality.
2007-05-16 00:11:12
A few months back I wrote about how I played a woman in Second Life. Since then I've lost my active status of a resident and pretty much ceased covering this wonderful metaverse (Wagner James Au, of New World Notes, removed me from his second life bloggers list and rightly so, I wasn't posting about it anymore. I'm not going to ask him to put me back on just yet because I don't know how long I can keep up blogging about it). Today I decided to head back into it and, after a lengthy update, was greeted by my scantly dressed avatar. What was I thinking? She looked like a whore. Clad in purple underwear, stockings, and a black leather bikers outfit I rotated around the body I paid L$1500 for and considered my options. When I originally posted about it I was accused by an anonymous commenter of 'wanting something to look at';I think you sound like a politically correct loser. I think you're full of shit. And I think you just like looking at your avatar's ridiculous body. If you want ...

Second Life Escort Ratings
2007-05-16 00:10:46
With the vast amount of sex available in Second Life, and the Escort services that go with them , sometimes you want to know whether or not the girl your splashing the cash on is worth her price tag. This is where Second Life Escort Ratings steps in.S.L.E.R provides the intrepid virtual sex explorer with the information they need to have a fulfilling sexual experience through SL. Through snippets of the sexual chat and ratings on avatar performance, Tommy Thompson guides you through the darker underbelly of SL.Yet, as The Second Life Herald points out:The ratings only address avatar performance (with snipets of chat) but give no indication as to whether your avi might not be... oh, I dunno... a 340 pound trucker taking advantage of the cheap wifi access at the Flying J Truckstops. ...

Exploring Second Life: Wind, Part Two
2007-05-16 00:10:02
Continued from part one.To Visit Wind click this link.I was first struck by the entire Gothic feel of the castle as I entered. Everything in my vicinity was black and wouldn't look out of place in Dracula's castle. Those things hanging off the roof that look like dark curtains are actually stone, more about how they link to the castle later. To the right of the entrance hall was a black stone fountain pouring out water I wouldn't advise to drink anytime soon. The trickle of the fountain was errie in the gigantic halls of this castle that defied the laws of gravity. Notice the dragon/snake style heads that was a common feature of this monstorous castle, and will link to what I saw on the ceiling earlier.~> Continue Reading...If we take a closer look at the ceiling we can see these root type things I mentioned earlier. Taking into account the snake theme around the castle it led me to consider whether or not they were supposed to resemble snakes. To me it says petrified snakes and if y ...

Second Life Blogosphere Round-Up
2007-05-16 00:09:41
Kicking off the round-up is Cheri Horton, who's quest for sex finally ends in her losing her virtual virginity.Torley Linden (I'm still getting used to that) briefly reflects on the past visual updates to Second Life and how the sun sucks compared to the rippled water effect (I whole heartedly agree, the water puts the sun to shame). The Second Life Herald has an interview up with Second Life renegade TrannyPet Barmy, who plans on releasing his own version of Second Life for free download soon, challenging the very ideals of Linden Labs.Hamlet Linden, of New World Notes, reports what Lawerence Lessig did after his lecture, attending a merry jig in the trees of ElvenGlen. While Pham Neutra, of SLOG, notes how Second Life is not only growing in size, but also in depth. So, a nice little bit to be reading there, although I've noticed lately that the Second Life blogosphere isn't as active as it could be. Sure, there are sites out there but it's finding them that's the problem, and whe ...

Exploring Second Life: Wind, Part One
2007-05-16 00:08:35
I started up Second Life today and surprisingly realised it was working fine for me again. I put it down to my housemates PC being off, maybe he'd done something that had crippled the network for a while? Anyway, it gave me a chance to put my Second Life exploring ideas into practice and I painstakingly began to compile a list of Second Life locations I wished to visit and record in my blog. This list is by no means complete, and due to the nature of SL it never will be, but my main aim is to provide my thoughts and a few screenshots of locations I hope people will follow up on and explore themselvesPart of my research into new locations began at the SL forums in this note worthy thread (a free SL membership is required to gain access to the forums). Through this I discovered a place called wind, which the poster described as a 'fantasy location'.To visit wind for yourself follow this link.My journey through Wind began at this small arched platform, at the beginning of a well trodde ...

Second Life Update Causes Major Problems
2007-05-16 00:07:38
Second Life upgraded to 1.8.2 today and already I'm wishing it would have stayed how it was. Sure, I've always had lag problems here and there (as have most residents) but it's never been completely unplayable to me. So imagine my frustration when I upgrade earlier today and log on to find my client plagued with so many problems that it's not even worth trying to run sl.My framerate barely rises above 3fps, textures take up to 10 minutes to load (or don't even load at all), moving my avatar or camera results in a incredibly slow response time, and bringing up the main map tends to crash the client all-together. It's amazing how it can work fine in the morning but become awfully ruined through an update. All my drivers are updated, and my network circumstances haven't changed since I logged off Second Life this morning, so I really have no idea what it can be. All other online games I possess are working fine so I can't see it being a network problem. I just want to enjoy my tim ...
