Next Week: Rock Band Gets 'Dead' - SendMeRSS
2008-03-03 14:24:27
Next Week: Rock Band Gets 'Dead'Rock Band is about to get a lot more freeform. Next week, Harmonix will slap six master recordings from the Grateful Dead onto their already-ample list of downloadable tracks. Prior to the game's release, Harmonix promised that eighteen Dead songs would eventually land on the marketplace. Next week's update, on March 4, will bring six of them: "China Cat Sunflower" (1969, Aoxomoxoa) "Casey Jones" (1970, Workingman's Dead) "Sugar Magnolia" (1970, American Beauty) "Truckin'" (1970, American Beauty) "Franklin's Tower" (1975, Blues For Allah) "I Need A Miracle" (1978, Shakedown Street) Twelve more Dead tracks will become available "over the next several months," says Harmonix. Here's the best part: They're $2 each, but only $10 for the whole package. That's a savings of something like two dollars! Japan Virtual Console: Joy Mecha Fight, Fantasy Zone - SendMeRSS
2008-03-03 14:24:23
Japan Virtual Console: Joy Mecha Fight, Fantasy ZoneJapan, much like America, will just have to deal with another scaled-back month of Virtual Console releases in March. At least they know what they're in for, already. Next month's lineup will consist of mostly 8-bit classics, notably the latter-day Famicom fighting game Joy Mecha Fight (pictured right) and the shooter Fantasy Zone for Master System. Speaking of which, I actually went and downloaded the first Master System title, Fist of the North Star. It's terrible, of course; it's an awful beat-em-up where you just kick the same enemy over and over. It makes Kung Fu look like Final Fight. But at least the emulation is great. There's flicker! It's not blurry! Looks fine to me.More notable news from this month's list of Japan VC titles: The perpetually-delayed MSX games have been confirmed for a May release date. Hopefully they're not just kidding this time, too. Also, this month will not only feature no Nintendo ...

Retronauts: Smash Bros. MarathonIt's been a while, but another episode of 1up's podcast Retronauts that features Wired's me is flowing through the tubes as we speak. This week, me, Jeremy Parish, Jenn Frank, Ray Barnholt, and Andrew Fitch discuss the most important topic ever: Super Smash Bros. Brawl. No, I don't know what that has to do with retro gaming. Deal with it. Also spliced slap into the middle of the episode is an interview with the guy who ported Marathon: Durandal to Xbox Live Arcade. Now that he has the ability to transform himself into energy he can do just that. Forum Post of the Day: PUG Player ArchetypesFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, Instances, HumorOnce Patch 2.4 goes live, we will most likely be able to queue up for all of the major battlegrounds as premades. There will always be PUGs, since even the three battlegrounds that allow premade groups to play have them. Sideways of Korgath posted a thread on the official forums on the most annoying PUG player archetypes. The original list included: The Aloof - This guy appears to be guarding a flag or, but the chickens at the farm in AB are actually doing a better job. It's hard to say whether he's AFK, chatting in vent, or just didn't get enough sleep last night, but a guy caps the flag behind him and he doesn't even notice. If he's in gulch and the enemy flag carrier runs by, he just keeps on doing whatever it is he's doing as if nothing happened. Arena tournament items revealedFiled under: Items, Events, PvP, Contests, ArenaYou remember that 3v3 Arena tournament we told you about? The one with $200,000 worth of prize money, that's going to be played on private servers full of premade characters and paved with free epics? Well, today Blizzard announced which items you're going to be able to choose from, should you decide to cough up the $20 entrance fee. Let's take a look.First off, there's high-quality ammo, reagents, bandages, poisons, food, and water. Boring enough. In case you feel the need to look really bad-ass, or to get from place to place faster, you can grab Reins of the Black War Tiger/Horn of the Black War Wolf. All that is fine, but what about actual gear? All the Season 2 Merciless Gladiator gear is available, and all the Tier 5 class sets. There are also selected other items from the tier 5 raids (SSC and TK), as well as some badge loot to fill in the gaps. I'm even seeing the odd T4 raid item, like the Eye o ...

Around Azeroth: The (re)birth of a Phoenix mountFiled under: Screenshots, Around Azeroth, Galleries, Mounts Exodeus of Celestial Blade on Icecrown was there when his guild downed Kael'thas for the second time. And what should drop, but the Ashes of Al'ar which summons the coveted Phoenix mount, a server first for Icecrown. Appropriately, (at least in RP terms) a Holy Pally won the roll. Exodeus considered the arrival of the fiery creature to be a good omen of things to come as his guild said goodbye to T5 content. Later that night, they not only walked into Hyjal for the first time and downed the first boss, but they also got attuned for the Black Temple. WoW Insider Show live on the virtual air tomorrow afternoonFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, Podcasts, Podcasting, Odds and ends, Quests, WoW Insider Show A brand new episode of our podcast, the WoW Insider Show, will be recorded live tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm on WoW Radio, and I can tell you right now that we'll be talking about Warlocks. The news about Lifetap changes topped the charts on WoW Insider this week, so myself, Duncor (Turpster is away this week, so the D is kindly stepping in), and John "BigBearButt" Petricelli (along with probably one more person from WoW Insider) will definitely be chatting about the most demonic class in the game. But that's not all -- other topics of discussion will include what classes the CMs play, the worst quests in the game, and we'll also be asking the same question Nihilum did: are raiders becoming obsolete? Plus, we'll have reader mail (you can send it in right now at theshow@wowinsider.com), and we'll welcome anyone and everyone on th ...

Hacked and robbed blind, one guild's cautionary taleFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, Guilds, Blizzard Our Guild had been going downhill for a while now. At the beginning of the year, key officers and members, cornerstones of our raiding team, quit the game for one reason or another. Some of our members got hacked, just like WoW Insider's Amanda Dean. This took the wind out from under our sails, despite great success in Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep. As 2007 closed, I envisioned us taking down Vashj and Kael within the first quarter of 2008. I was stoked. There were good times when we'd take down two new bosses a week. Of course, Murphy's Law happens. While key team members quit the game, others took extended (sometimes unannounced) leaves of absence, and with diminishing raid attendance and obviously performance, other members looked elsewhere for better raiding opportunities. And when it rains, it pours.A little over a week ago our Guild bank was robbed. It was cleaned ou ...

Ask WoW Insider: What does a naked level 60 mage do?Filed under: Ask WoW Insider, Making moneyWelcome to today's edition of Ask WoW Insider, in which we publish your questions for dissection by the peanut gallery -- now with extra snark and commentary by one of our writers. This week, reader Meliv writes:Hi WoW Insider! I need some good advice. About August I leveled a mage to 60 but due to my very crappy computer at the time I could barely play in Outland so I decided to quit. However, to stop the addiction pulling me back I sold all my gear to repay some old debts and deleted my characters. Now it's December and my situation has changed, I (kindly) asked a GM to restore my Mage and now I'm back in the game. Only problem is that I'm completely naked with no money and no gear. What should I do?There's a joke about what naked mages, sheep, and money we'll leave on the table. As an aside, never delete your character. As WoW addicts we tend to treat quitting WoW with the same seriousn ...

WoW Moviewatch: The Blood KnightFiled under: Machinima, WoW MoviewatchOskar Renlund is taking an interesting approach to machinima. The Blood Knight is his first movie, and he's leaving it up to his audience as to whether he should make any more. Like Macheath, he created the film in order to learn the editing programs, but for a first effort, it's not bad at all!Oskar managed to pack the video with all sorts of exciting elements, like an overbearing father, a lost love, and an epic battle. Resident Evil Zero for the Wii - SendMeRSS
2008-02-29 21:48:10
Resident Evil Zero for the WiiCapcom is going to tinker with Gamecube title Resident Evil Zero and release it on Wii.The first snaps were found in Japanese magazine Famitsu (and spotted by Resident Evil Horror).Zero, just like Resident Evil 4, will be given Wii remote controls and probably some extra story fluff. However, it was a weaker instalment in the series than RE4 and, if given the same ham-fisted Wii controls, could be a less appealing package. Plus you can already play it on Wii using backwards compatibility. If and when the new version does come out in Europe it will probably carry a cut-down price-tag like RE4, which was GBP 25. But if you hunt around you can find the original for much less.Capcom Europe was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.Head over to our Resident Evil Zero review from a whole five years ago for more information. Mario: the Jaffe editionFiled under: Video Get this: David Jaffe, misunderstood genius/opinionated loudmouth (delete as you see fit) and creator of God of War would love to oversee a Mario project. Of course, because this is David Jaffe we're talking about here, Mario had better prepare for a makeover, should the call ever come in from Nintendo. After exchanging a few stilted jokes with Geoff Keighley about equipping Mario with a machete and making Peach a hooker (at which point we were getting hideous visions of a Shadow the Hedgehog-style reinvention), Jaffe became a little more serious about how he'd tweak Mario, arguing that the Mushroom Kingdom is "sort of a drug-induced, altered state of consciousness," and adding that "There's clearly a kind of drug culture reference thing that I pick up on. I'd explore that. I'd make it more violent."An early front runner for worst gaming idea of 2008? It might have some serious competition, but it gets our vote. Bless him for trying ...

Defend Your Castle: new awesome date, new awesome lookFiled under: Screens, Wii Ware XGen Studios has revamped the look of Defend Your Castle significantly for its May 12th Wii Ware release, swapping out the, well, "Flash game" look of the original for a lovely "made of junk" theme. The castle has become a set of construction-paper rectangles decorated with paper flags on toothpick poles, and the enemy invaders have become doodles with button heads. Our absolute favorite detail is the user interface: the health bar is now made of fabric scraps. We hate to make the comparison to a not-particularly-awesome game, but this style was used to excellent effect in the Napoleon Dynamite DS game. The art was by far the best thing about that game, whereas this has already been proven to be a pretty good game.Gallery: Defend Your CastlePermalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - JC Fletcher - Fri, 29 Feb 2008 20:00:0 ...

Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 2/18-2/24Filed under: NewsSuper Smash Bros. Brawl hung onto the top spot last week, but not by much. For the first time, the king of Nintendo fighters was actually close to the game behind it, with a lead of less than 10,000 units. Considering that Brawl has dominated for a month and is already over the million mark, though, we're not surprised to see a little less dominance from the title.A lot of new software was released last week, which finally caused Super Mario Galaxy to fall out of the top thirty. Winning Eleven: Play Maker 2008 was the Wii's new game, debuting at the number six spot. Family Ski also managed to jump up five spots, despite the plethora of new titles. On the hardware side, the Wii continues to reign in first place. The PSP and DS aren't too far behind, but the Wii is outselling the PS3 4:1 with the help of Brawl. You can check out the listings and sales numbers -- they're posted after the break.Hardware: ...

Capcom blog says RE Zero port still has hope for North American releaseFiled under: News Imagine our surprise when Capcom's blog updated to our RSS about the Wii port of Resident Evil Zero. We thought yesterday would be the end of talk pertaining to the game releasing here in the west. But, for you European readers, know this doesn't apply to you. Capcom Europe passed on the project, so apparently there's no hope there. But, back to us in North America. The latest entry in the Capcom blog says they "are watching the progress on the game, and if it ends up blowing up huge like RE4 Wii did, we'll evaluate the possibility of bringing it over here and flipping the lingo sos that y'all can read it." For those of you that don't speak hip blog, that last bit at the end means that they'll localize the game over here with English text and speech. You all pretty much know how we feel (Resident Evil = we buy) about the whole thing, but what do you think? Gamers on the Street: WoW as child's playFiled under: WoW Social Conventions, Features, Interviews, Gamers on the Street Gamers on the Street logs onto U.S. servers to get the word from the front on what's going on in and around the World of Warcraft. How young is too young to play WoW? We've discussed the ups and downs of grouping with kids quite a few times over the years, but the topic - like the kids themselves - just won't go away. Earlier this week, we interviewed an 11-year-old SSC raider and his mother. While most reader comments applauded the family for a disciplined, sensible approach to online gaming, a few readers seemed confused or even aghast that someone so young would be allowed to play World of Warcraft.Gamers on the Street decided to pop in on Bloodscalp, a high-population PvP realm with what one supposes would be a correspondingly tough outlook on kiddie action. We surveyed several level 70 players at random, asking them about their own experiences with childre ...

Breakfast Topic: Instance for saleFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, Breakfast topics, InstancesIxus sent us a question about hiring mercenaries in World of Warcraft: he's a level 20 Warlock who paid a level 57 a whopping 1g to run him through Deadmines since he couldn't find a group for it. We have mentioned this topic before, but it's usually in posts about beggars, and I don't know if we've actually considered what could be a cottage industry: actually setting rates and hiring out higher levels to complete various tasks for lowbies. Is this an OK thing to do. I'll admit that I've run lowbies through instances before, but never for gold -- usually it's a friend of mine who just wants some extra gear from a certain instance. And I've been offered gold for an instance run, but I've never accepted it, and I'm not even sure what I would charge to actually run someone through an instance (I'd probably have pretty high terms: 5-10g and a portion of the drops, depending on what class w ...

Is Mortal Strike the new black?Filed under: Hunter, Shaman, Warrior, Patches, Analysis / Opinion, Blizzard, Arena What's up with Mortal Strike? And why is it, when Blizzard feels that a class or spec needs to be made viable in Arenas -- and let's face it, the game is all about Arenas now, isn't it? -- they give them a Mortal Strike-style debuff? When the developers were figuring out how to raise Hunters' representation in Arenas, they changed Aimed Shot in Patch 2.3 to give a heal-gimping debuff similar the the Arms Warrior's bread and butter ability. Enter Patch 2.4 in the PTRs. When Kalgan finally descended upon the Shaman forums, he said that Shamans were definitely getting buffed just in time to quell the wake of an uproar to the nerfs made to the Elemental spec. Along with the reversal of the Nature's Swiftness and Elemental Mastery shared cooldown, the current iteration of the progressive patch is seeing a change to the Shaman's Flametongue Weapon and Totem, which happens to ...

More pretty details about Eternity's ChildFiled under: News, Wii Ware Luc Bernard, creator of Eternity's Child, recently revealed another character for his upcoming Wii Ware game. The character (pictured above on the right), who we know almost nothing about except for the fact that she's a girl, will help Angel (the protagonist) along his quest.Bernard also explained how the controls will work. It seems that Angel is controlled by the Nunchuck's analog stick, while the red flying heart is controlled by the Wiimote. With the push of a button, you summon Angel's female friend, who will start throwing things (we're not sure what) where the heart shaped cursor is pointing. It sounds simple enough, but also fun, especially considering that the game only costs $5. Still, above all. it's the art that has us enamored with this title, and we'll admit that we're looking forward to this game's release.Gallery: Eternity's ChildPermalink | Email this | Linking Blogs&nbs ...

The game will aim to impress by allowing gamers to play it using only the Wiimote and the DS stylus. No bands or songs have been announced yet, but Disney promises that “some of the biggest names in rock, alternative, popular, emo, and indie rock music” from the 60s to present day will be available.   The two versions of Ultimate Band are completely different, in the Wii version, players will play throughout the career of a rock-star, starting from singing in a garage to International stadiums.
