Epic: Consoles Are 'Stealing' Hardcore Gamers From PC - SendMeRSS
2008-02-01 21:16:00
Epic: Consoles Are 'Stealing' Hardcore Gamers From PC The hardcore PC gaming audience is dwindling, says Epic's Mark Rein, because consoles are slowly but surely stealing players away. "Consoles are definitely stealing a lot of hardcore gamers from the PC," Rein told The Guardian, adding, "[T]he sales of the console versions are something like ten times the sales of the PC versions." Which makes us wonder why we're still waiting for a 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3. "The game is up and running on Xbox 360 - it has been for a long time, and its running wonderfully - it just doesn't have any Xbox Live written into it yet so that's the work that remains," explained Rein.Microsoft also is apparently still resistant to the idea of user-created content, but Rein doesn't blame them. As it stands right now, Live is a closed system whose content is checked and re-checked for quality, something that wouldn't be possible with something like UT3's mods, he said. "User gener ...

Wii Fit has serious money-printing potential - SendMeRSS

Wii Fit has serious money-printing potentialFiled under: News Over the last four weeks, Wii Fit has enjoyed a top spot on the Japanese sales charts. Actually, it's enjoyed the top spot, as the bundle has been selling like crazy in the Land of the Rising Fun. If you're one who likes to keep track of the sales numbers for the region, then this is old hat to you. We know you're impressed though, because you can bet we definitely are. And, as you are undoubtedly already pondering, this could be the very same scenario when Wii Fit releases to North America and Europe later this year.Gallery: Wii Fit[Via Joystiq]Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - David Hinkle - Fri, 01 Feb 2008 17:45:00 GMT - Feed (10 subs) japan sales salesfigures wiifit Sent using SendMeRss.com. Gran Turismo 5 screenshots: yes, it looks goodFiled under: Videos and ScreenshotsClick for high-resolution image. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue looks good. We've known this all along. As its March release date inches ever closer, SCEA has released a small batch of new screenshots that cement its beauty even further. Take a look at this screenshot, for example. Look at the incredible lighting on the signs in the background. The way it reflects so realistically is truly brilliant. We'd love to just stop the car, and walk out to appreciate the scenery. Maybe this engine will be used in another game in the future? Sega Superstars Tennis: controls, minigames, and awesomeness - SendMeRSS

Sega Superstars Tennis: controls, minigames, and awesomenessFiled under: Interviews We know that Sega Superstars Tennis is a tennis game with a bunch of Sega folks in it, but until now we haven't known much else. How would the Wii controls work? What kind of special powers can each character use? CVG sat down with Sumo Digital to discuss the Wii version and get some specifics.First, and most important for distinguishing between the Wii and other versions, the controls. SST will in fact use a motion-based control setup. As Sumo describes it: "We take the Wii remote's speed and direction and use this to determine the shot you get. But of course, as with real tennis, the better your timing, the better the shot you'll do." With somewhat direct translation between movement and in-game response, this sounds much more Wii Sports and less Rockstar Table Tennis. The developers also revealed some of the minigame options, which are unsurprisingly based on Sega classics, and can be played sing ...

Rumor: Brawl sells 500k on day oneFiled under: Rumors, Sales Just as we suspected, those giant queues spotted in downtown Shinjuku weren't just there for Devil May Cry 4, Disgaea 3, or spare batteries. They were there for Brawl, which, according to Japanese blogger and sales hound Sinobi, sold half a million units on its first day of release. If Sinobi is correct, that's double what Super Mario Galaxy managed in its opening week, and a figure that could yet see Brawl beat the 900,000 sales racked up by New Super Mario Bros. in its first week of sales. On a less exultant note, Sinobi also reports that Namco Bandai's Family Ski could only muster 10,000 sales. EA getting used to PS3 development - but 'not quite' there - SendMeRSS
2008-02-01 20:54:41
EA getting used to PS3 development - but 'not quite' thereFiled under: NewsEA got a lot of flak from PS3 gamers for the sub-par performance of Madden on Sony's machine. Their delayed, and sluggish, port of The Orange Box also earned a lot of negative attention for the publisher (although it's Valve's refusal to make a PS3 version of the game that deserves the real scorn). Things are looking up for one of gaming's largest publishers -- but it's not quite there."Games where we led development on the PS3 platform, like Burnout, which is doing very well on the market today, we had no issue at all," said EA CEO John Riccitiello in a conference call. By starting with PS3, not only did Sony's version run well -- but the Xbox 360 port also ran quite smoothly. Unfortunately, not all games have started their development on PS3."But in circumstances where we either led with the Xbox 360 or ran parallel production, for the most part, we're still experiencing some delay on the PS3. It's a litt ...

EA, Marvel Cancel Fighting Game - SendMeRSS
2008-01-29 03:43:20
EA, Marvel Cancel Fighting GameElectronic Arts and Marvel Comics have dissolved their partnership to produce games based on the comic characters, GameTap reports. The two companies forged a deal in 2004 that saw the release of one game, the critically trashed Marvel Nemesis: Rise Of The Imperfects1. Another fighting game was under development at EA's Chicago studio, but that studio was shut down last year. The game's producer Kudo Tsunoda has since left the company. With Microsoft's Marvel Universe Online also reportedly in serious trouble, it's been quite the rocky road for the comic superpower's videogame aspirations of late. Maybe it's time for them to call up Capcom. Update: Justin Lambros, vice president of Marvel's Interactive division, has this to say on the matter, pointing out that future fighting games set in the Marvel universe are in the works: Electronic Arts and Marvel have jointly agreed to discontinue development of Marvel fighting games under ...

Check Out The Prince Of Persia Graphic Novel Here's a page out of the upcoming graphic novel based on Prince of Persia, due out this fall from First Second Books. Written by A.B. Sina and illustrated by Alex Puvilland and LeUyen Pham, the graphic novel was described thusly by game creator Jordan Mechner: "It's a totally different story and characters from the games or the movie, and I mean different." Mechner was so impressed with the result, he said, that he's working with the artists on an original graphic novel, "a swashbuckling action-adventure based on historical events." First Look: EA's Tiberium Blends Shooting And Strategy - SendMeRSS
2008-01-29 03:41:47
First Look: EA's Tiberium Blends Shooting And Strategy You probably already know, thanks to a blowout cover story in this month's Game Informer magazine, that Electronic Arts plans to spin a first-person shooter off of its Command & Conquer real-time strategy game series. I checked out a presentation on the game, called Tiberium, the other night. The hook of the game is that it's going to blend first-person shooting with squad-based tactical maneuvers. As you progress through the game's levels, you'll come across deposits of Tiberium -- the alien mineral deposits central to the fiction of C&C's world -- and you can take control of those points. Every time you do, you get the ability to call in another squad of grunts that you can order around the battlefield.EA isn't quite ready for us to get hands-on with the game, but they did show us a demonstration of how all these things might fit together. There are many places in the game where you, as the unit commander, ca ...

PS3 to beat Xbox 360 in Battle for Europe - SendMeRSS

PS3 to beat Xbox 360 in Battle for EuropePS3 officials have announced that the number of PAL PlayStation 3s will exceed that of Xbox 360s by the end of this summer. David Reeves, the man in charge with Sony's affairs in Europe said: " In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany, Italy, plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland, our current cumulative installed base is now higher than that of the Xbox 360." Reeves also added that Sony's wonder console has outsold Microsoft's machine by 3:1 last week in PAL territories, and he expects the PS3 to outnumber the 360 in Europe, by the end of this summer. All this talk of Europe, Germany and France made me think about WW2. Maybe Microsoft represents Germany and Sony, the Allied Forces. If history repeats itself, will Sony come up on top in the end?!? Call of Duty 4 sells 2 million copies on PS3 - SendMeRSS

Call of Duty 4 sells 2 million copies on PS3According to VG Chartz, Activision's popular FPS reached the 2 million sold PS3 copies milestone last week. Thus, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare joins Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Men as the Trio, the only 3 games on the PS3 to sell 2 million copies. This golden trio, so to speak, will soon turn into a quartet, as Assassin's Creed reached the 1.99 million sold copies mark and will surely reach 2 million very shortly. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was in many people's opinion the best video game to come out in 2007 and it has been doing pretty well in the sales department on every platform. Interview: Answering Demands for Playable Aliens in Tabula Rasa - SendMeRSS
2008-01-29 00:03:38
Interview: Answering Demands for Playable Aliens in Tabula Rasa When Tabula Rasa was released, the gaming community was swift to express its dismay that the only playable race in the game was human. The design team, smart folks that they are, paid attention. "We took some of that feedback and we ran with it," says Paul Sage, the game's lead designer. The result is that as of version 1.4, which should be available some time this week, you can finally play as a Brann, Forean, or Thrax. Sort of. The characters are actually human/alien hybrids. "You use the DNA from the aliens to augment yourself," explains Sage. Adding aliens to the playable roster was always part of the plan for Tabula Rasa, but the community feedback inspired the team to include it "a little earlier than we thought we would." The decision to launch the game with only one playable race struck some as odd,but emphasizing the humanity of your character was one of executive produ ...

World Of Goo Coming To Wii, PC, Mac, Linux - SendMeRSS
2008-01-28 23:53:45
World Of Goo Coming To Wii, PC, Mac, Linux 2008 IGF finalist World of Goo is now slated to be released on the Nintendo Wii, PC, Mac and Linux platforms. According to a blurb on developer 2D Boy's website, the title will hit PC and Wii in 2008, and will be coming to Mac and Linux at a later, unannounced date. Normally this is the kind of information that would fly under the radar, but as you can see from the above video, World of Goo is a seemingly inventive, adorable amalgam of Lemmings and Worms wrapped in a strikingly well implemented physics system. Plus, to use a technical term, it's wicked cute. World of Goo [2D Boy, via WiiNintendo] Link - Mon, 28 Jan 2008 13:11:50 GMT - Feed (1 subs) Sent using SendMeRss.com. Wrath Of The Lich King Bestiary Now Live - SendMeRSS
2008-01-28 23:53:40
Wrath Of The Lich King Bestiary Now Live Blizzard has just posted a bestiary for their upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. Currently, the page is sparsely populated (only details for the Plague Eruptor and Nerubian Vizier currently exist), but presumably we'll be seeing updates roll in as we get closer to the eventual WotLK release. Those of you who recall the similar bestiary created for the previous WoW expansion (The Burning Crusade) will also remember that it was far from a comprehensive list of beasties found in Outland. In truth, these bestiaries are mostly just an excuse for Blizzard to push their concept art out to the slavering fanbase. Then again, the concept art is really good, so the fans will probably lap it up as eagerly as they do any other snippet of info from the company. First, you'll have to pre-order Patapon at your local Gamestop to get your hands on the demo. Play through the demo and save your progress. When the game comes out on February 26th, pop it in and load your save file. Not only will you be able to pick up where you left off, but you'll also have the Spear of Protection, which is apparently a demo-only exclusive. Wrestler Christian Cage, Part-Time Games JournalistProfessional wrestler Christian Cage has turned game journalist, starting up a column called "Peep This" over at GameTap. Sadly, the TNA wrestler falls into the classic rookie trap of making your first column about how awesome your column is going to be. But there's still some interesting stuff in there: Did you know he was one of the world's top-ranked Top Spin 2 players, back in the day?I was ranked 52 and playing some guy from England; we were in a tie break in the final set, and for some reason this dude just starts hitting lob shots on every return. It threw me off, and I lost my concentration and the game. So afterwards, I'm asking the guy why he did that. We get into an argument (I'm really cool, right?), and next thing I know the door to my game room swings open and my wife is standing there glaring at me like a mother scolding a child, with her hands on her hips. 'Hot Coffee' Class Action Settled, $35 Rewarded For Outrage The class action suit against Rockstar Games for the part they played in the infamous "Hot Coffee" scandal has finally been resolved, granting all US citizens who were offended by the event up to $35. In case you forgot, the entire "Hot Coffee" scandal was the result of some code left in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that allowed players (through the use of a simple, widely available hack) to "have sex" with other characters in the game (see right). Rockstar denied culpability, but were still taken to court over the issue. To be eligible for monetary compensation for any outrage they may have felt over the incident, claimants must be able to verify their purchase of the game and submit their notice by May 16. In addition to the monetary rewards, the court has also made available updated copies of San Andreas which do not contain the offending code. As per usual with these type of settlements, th ...

Next Kingdom Under Fire Slated To Be An MMO - SendMeRSS
2008-01-28 23:53:25
Next Kingdom Under Fire Slated To Be An MMO Initial details on the next Kingdom Under Fire sequel have just surfaced, revealing that the title will be released on both consoles and PC in 2009 and will be a massively multiplayer online game. Kingdom Under Fire II (oddly, the fifth game in the series) will eschew the recent action stylings of Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom and will instead resurrect the series' original strategic slant. To describe the new game, developer Blueside has coined the abbreviation "MMOARTS" (Massively Multiplayer Online Action Real-Time Strategy), but the only thing you need to know is that it will reportedly allow thousands of players to participate in large-scale strategic conflicts in a persistent world. If you're curious as to how the title will look, Eurogamer has created a gallery filled with shiny, new screen captures from the game . Kingdom Under Fire gets MMO sequel [Eurogamer] Link - M ...

Virtual Consolation Prize: Hope You Like Snowboarding [Note: In solidarity with Nintendo's newfound who-gives-a-shit attitude towards Virtual Console, I am assembling this post from bits and pieces of old ones. Let's all go back to bed!] With the wealth of content that they could be mining, there's no way that we should ever have a Virtual Console release week with only one game. Microsoft Claims 360 Has 'Record' Attach Rate According to Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell, the 360 has a phenomenal attach rate, one "that's a record certainly for any console and relative to history." In an interview with CNBC, Liddell described the console's success by saying, "We're now at a stage where we sell about 7 games per console...So people are now actually spending more on the games and accessories than they are on the underlying console." Which, says, Liddell, was the plan all along: "[T]hat business model that we put in place the last couple of years is certainly starting to fire." General boards poll reveals the obviousFiled under: Paladin, Warlock, Analysis / Opinion, Blizzard, News items, Instances, Burning Crusade, Lore, Wrath of the Lich King, Forums Friday afternoon, Blizzard employee Bornakk posted a poll on the General boards to find our favorite 5-man dungeon of the Burning Crusade. As you can see in the above image, the Caverns of Time is rocking the charts. I can't say I disagree with the numbers there, they're pretty close to my opinions as well. Old Hillsbrad and the Black Morass offer something that most of the other instances don't: Fast pacing, minimal trash pulls, and a story element. The instances aren't very long, either. Black Morass is what, thirty minutes? These dungeons on Heroic remain difficult and dangerous, adding some new elements to the instance, such as a necessity for speed and stealth when it comes to the patrols in Old Hillsbrad. Some of the other Heroics do this as well, but most of them coast along on 'ow this mob hurts a l ...
