Raiding without addons - SendMeRSS
2008-01-27 22:44:40
Raiding without addonsFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, AddOns, Raiding, Bosses Raiding is notorious for the number of addons necessary. Just off the top of my head there's ora2, Omen, Deadly Boss Mobs, Recount, and WoW Web Stats logging. If you're like me you're an addon addict to boot and probably have dozens, if not nearly a hundred, other addons to make life easy. But in all honesty, are these addons really necessary for raiding? There's some interesting arguments both ways. One of the most convincing that I've heard is that if Blizzard really wanted you to use things like Omen, they would have built a threat meter into the game itself. That does make sense in a lot of ways. The rebuttal to this argument is that Blizzard provided a huge Addon API for programmers to make things like Omen.Continue reading Raiding without addons Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Adam Holisky - Sun, 27 Jan 2008 19:00:00 GMT - Feed (4 subs) addon bosses db ...
Will Brawl fall to the Wii's casual focus? - SendMeRSS
2008-01-27 20:15:01
Will Brawl fall to the Wii's casual focus?Filed under: News An interesting opinion piece by JC Barnett popped up on GameSetWatch yesterday, which covered the familiar area of the general lack of success of "hardcore" games on the Wii, specifically in Japan. Barnett's prime example is No More Heroes, which, despite being hyped like crazy (and also despite being really awesome) totally bombed. A "punk rock game" from Suda 51 isn't really prime hit material, being somewhat niche by design, but Barnett uses this as an example of a game that doesn't fit with the Wii audience. He then wonders out loud if Super Smash Bros. Brawl will actually sell as well as we all think it will. "It is hardcore, but it is popular hardcore. But is it a fit for the Wii audience? My guess is: not so much." He expects a fairly strong first month with a large drop-off, much like Super Mario Galaxy. In other words, it'll sell well, but not as well as a DS game about petting a dog. We've heard a lot of talk abou ...

Around Azeroth: Everyone has to sleepFiled under: Raiding, Around Azeroth, Bosses Silverbolt of Malygos was preparing to take down Leotheras the Blind in Serpentshrine Cavern when he noticed these bunk beds, nestled in a cobweb-filled corner. Says Silver, "The Broken in the room holding Leo captive apparently sleep in bunk beds during their downtime!" But, really, here at WoW Insider, despite the fact that we run on a 24-hour schedule of playing, researching, and writing fueled entirely by Red Bull, we recognize the fact that everyone has to sleep sometime!Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? Wii serves over 5 million in Japan - SendMeRSS
2008-01-23 21:07:44
Wii serves over 5 million in JapanFiled under: News In little over 60 weeks, the Wii console has managed to sell over 5 million units in its home territory of Japan. As impressive as this is, it falls short of the DS, which achieved sales figures of this nature in 56 weeks. But, the Wii did manage to beat the PS2, which cracked the 5 million mark after 66 weeks on the market.A system is only so good as its games though, right? Well, in Japan the games pushing the Wii are Wii Sports (2.6 million copies sold as of now), Wii Play (2.1 million copies sold as of now), Mario Party 8 ( 1.1 million copies sold as of now) and Wii Fit (1.1 million copies sold as of now). Super Mario Galaxy comes in fifth place in the country, only selling a total of 843,961 copies.Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - David Hinkle - Wed, 23 Jan 2008 17:00:00 GMT - Feed (10 subs) japan marioparty8 mp8 ...

High School Musical: Save Twenty Bucks On It! - SendMeRSS
2008-01-23 21:07:42
High School Musical: Save Twenty Bucks On It!Filed under: News, SalesNot being familiar with the High School Musical movies, characters, or songs, we aren't sure if High School Musical: Sing It! has the wide appeal required to be a good party karaoke title. However, if you're a fan and have yet to pick up the Wii game (for some reason), then today's Amazon Deal of the Day is for you. That is, if you love karaoke and don't care what you're singing. The online retailer has dropped the game's price to $29.99 for today only. If you've got a Boogie microphone or other Wii-compatible USB mic, you're good to go. If you don't, you may be stuck paying the same price for the separate components that you would for the bundle. So, really, this Deal of the Day is big news for a very specific audience: super karaoke fans (who either have Boogie or are planning to buy American Idol or another mic game) who also love High School Musical. Or people who can find a cheap used Wii mic.Permalink  ...

Iwata Asks Sakurai: Volume 2 - SendMeRSS

Iwata Asks Sakurai: Volume 2Filed under: NewsFollowing yesterday's dojo update, we were excited to see another Iwata Asks piece hit the net. For the president of an incredibly successful company, Iwata's interviewing skills are amazing. And, of course, we'll take any and all things about Super Smash Bros. Brawl we can get our grubby little mitts on.In the second installment of Iwata and Sakurai's discussion, Sakurai discusses his feelings on working with the Wii and what he thinks of the console, as well as the design philosophy behind Brawl (they developed it thinking it would be the last game in the series, allowing them to put in as much as they could). Not only that, but Sakurai also goes on about how Super Smash Bros. Brawl could have easily been a more casual title (thankfully, it didn't turn out that way).Overall, it's a very fascinating read.Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - David Hinkl ...
No More Heroes soundtrack composer leads GDC panel - SendMeRSS
2008-01-23 16:47:01
No More Heroes soundtrack composer leads GDC panelFiled under: NewsFor anyone going to the Game Developers' Conference, this session in the Game Design track seems like a must-see. "The Music of Killer 7, God Hand, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, and No More Heroes" is a one-hour discussion led by Grasshopper Manufacture's Masafumi Takada, the composer behind all those games' soundtracks. According to the session's official description, "This session delves into how Masafumi Takada went about creating the spectacular musical soundtracks for (the above games)."Each of the extant games has a strong enough soundtrack for this panel to be worth your time. Takada's music has significantly more personality than most game music. Judging from a few samples, we're taking a leap of faith and assuming that No More Heroes will be the same way. And speaking of No More Heroes' soundtrack, the disc releases in Japan today.[Via Gamasutra]Permalink | Email this | Linkin ...

Wii Warm Up: Wii menu music - SendMeRSS

Wii Warm Up: Wii menu musicFiled under: Wii Warm UpWe were tooling around on the Virtual Console this evening while not really paying attention, and in the midst of the multitasking, the realization hit that everyone in the room was really into the Wii Shop channel music. We're talking bobbing heads, humming softly, the works. It's really catchy for something so unendingly cheerful, but maybe we just hear it a lot around here. It's grown on us. But it inspired us to ask how you felt about the various random tunes that pour out of your Wii. Breakfast Topic: The bandages - SendMeRSS

Breakfast Topic: The bandagesFiled under: First Aid, Breakfast topics, BuffsThis morning, while catching up on my weblog reading, I came across a post written by Kestrel pointing out that many players still have not trained first aid, and are not carrying, or using, bandages. Although this shouldn't have struck me as surprising, it did make me pause. Didn't everyone get the memo that post-expansion, bandages are integral? Hasn't everyone been bullied into training it? Are there really still players running around wiping more often simply because they won't carry a stack of bandages?Evidently. If you need convincing information as to why you should be carrying this item, posts like Kestrel's will walk you through some of the situations in which not doing so can be disastrous. As a last note on behalf of all hunters; please heal your pet in groups. Better yet, get a macro. View Poll Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Amanda Miller - Wed, 23 Jan 2008 13:05 ...

Naughty Dog interview about Uncharted's and the PS3's futureIn a recent interview with Sony developer Naughty Dog (of Jak and Daxter fame), their co-president Evan Wells talks about Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and what PlayStation 3 owners can expect from them in the future. Keep in the back of your mind that Uncharted 2 has already been hinted at by the studio. What follows are some choice quotes. Question: Presumably the engine for Uncharted will evolve over time and be used in future projects… perhaps the next Jak and Daxter? Are there areas of the engine that you know need improving? Answer: Absolutely. We will continue to refine the Uncharted engine for years to come. With Uncharted we’ve only just started to tap into the potential of the PS3. Particularly with the Cell processor, we should be able to do a lot more. We’re already busy porting more of our systems from the PPU over to the SPUs and seeing huge benefits. There are also a lot of cool rendering ef ...

Toy chainsaw + Nerf gun + time = DIY Gears of War gunFiled under: Culture We're not sure if it came to him in a vision or if he was visited by an angel, but when forum-goer Forsaken_angel24 played Gears of War, he paused the game and told the Dom to his Marcus that he was going to build a Lancer, the game's memorable assault rifle slash chainsaw. That's right about where we imagine his friend politely excused himself and phoned the local police, but even that couldn't stop Forsaken_angel24 from following through with his dream: he combined a Nerf gun with a toy chainsaw and copious amounts of free time to create a believable enough copy of the Lancer. How believable? The chain on the chainsaw actually moves, the lights actually light up, and it shoots totally realistic Nerf bullets. Still curious, peep the video after the break. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata interviewed about 2007 and 2008 Japanese website Yukan Fuji has posted a recent interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. In the interview, Iwata shares some thoughts on 2007 and discusses overall strategy for 2008. To quote Mr. Iwata: “Thanks to everyone, last year was a good year. The Nintendo DS crossed the 20 million mark [that’s in Japan only, worldwide the number is over 54 million], which has been called the limit for game hardware sales. We put in a lot of effort, but we also had a stronger than expected tail wind. To say ‘we expected it to sell’ would be vain. If we had known the Wii and DS would expand so dramatically in such a short time, we wouldn’t have had shortages, nor would we have had to raise our financial forecasts.” President Iwata showed a soft side when Fuji made note of press coverage suggesting that product shortages were a part of Nintendo’s strategy. Mr. Iwata replied to this with ...
