The 25 most popular gamertags of 2007 - SendMeRSS
2008-01-07 21:30:31
The 25 most popular gamertags of 2007Filed under: News, Xbox LiveXbox.com's lovable french fry connoisseur TriXie recently got around to tallying up the numbers and publishing the Top 25 Gamertags of 2007 which is viewable after the jump. And it should be no surprise to see names like Major Nelson, e and trixie360 leading the list. But if you go a little further down you'll notice that, sandwiched between casinoguy and DeaconBlade360, is our once very own Knuckles Dawson at the 19th spot. Congrats to David for making the list as we continue to wonder how a gamertag by the name of CerealKiller5 beat us out. Oh well, our super popular day will come eventually when our gamertag will be plastered on billboards, print and the internets the world over! One day, oh yes ... one day. Rock Band Tue: Iron Maiden, STP and Hives DLCFiled under: News, Xbox Live MarketplaceMr. Rock Band DLC himself, hmxsean announced this week's Rock Band content and we're loving it. We're loving it not only because we're getting a cover of Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" and master tracks of The Hives' "Die, All Right!" and Stone Temple Pilots' "Interstate Love Song" all priced at 160 points each. But we're also loving it because Harmonix is actually following through with their weekly content promise. Every week we've been getting new Rock Band downloadable content (which usually gets announced on Monday) and every week we have something to look forward to. Even if one week's DLC offerings are dull, we know there's always next Tuesday. Omega Five and Tron launch to the XBLA this weekFiled under: News, Xbox Live ArcadeWe just received a heads up from the folks over at the Gamerscore Blog telling us that this week we'll be treated to an XBLA twofer. One that we fully expected and one that sort of snuck up on us.Both Hudson's Omega Five and some very, very old-school Tron will make their way to the XBLA this Wednesday, January 9th with a reception the scale of a presidential inauguration. Omega Five will release for 800 Microsoft points and feature pretty 3D graphics, local co-op and crazy amounts of "boom!", "kablam!" and "splat!". Tron on the other hand will release for 400 Microsoft points and feature multiplayer co-op local or over Live (double the grid bug killing fun!) as well as a versus mode too. Not to mention it'll also sport some sexy CD quality audio. Again, both games will release to the XBLA this Wednesday, so give 'em a try and be smiley. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Commen ...

Stranglehold Map Pack: 1200 MS points too many - SendMeRSS
2008-01-06 02:13:50
Stranglehold Map Pack: 1200 MS points too manyFiled under: News, Xbox Live MarketplaceWe just came across new Strangehold DLC on the Marketplace today (it was announced last month) and ouch does it cost a lot. The Stranglehold Map Pack adds ten new multiplayer maps, twenty-one new characters, ten new achievements and 250 Gamerscore for ... 1200 Microsoft points. Run that through your MS points conversion calculator and that equals $15 US. An extra $15 DLC pack for a game that about two dozen people play online at any given moment. Yes, we're sympathetic to the fact that making ten new multiplayer maps, new achievements and a boatload of new characters was development intensive, but really. It's a bit late and a bit too expensive for a game nobody really plays anyway. An extra 250 Gamerscore would be a perfect draw to get people back into the Stranglehold swing of things and maybe, just maybe people would have been willing to pay 400 points for all the additional content. But 1200 ...

Microsoft denies HD DVD equipped 360 ... for nowFiled under: NewsWith all the pre-CES speculation running rampant and the hot, hot, hot rumor of an HD DVD equipped Xbox 360 being announced, everyone in Xbox 360 fandom is on high anticipation alert. And we were on the HD DVD 360 anticipation bandwagon until a few moments ago when Microsoft spoiled our speculation fun. Uncharacteristically wavering away from their traditional "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation" response, they took the HD DVD Xbox 360 rumor head on telling Gamespot that "we have reiterated multiple times since launching the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player that we have no plans to integrate an HD-DVD player in to the Xbox 360". Bummer. A Microsoft rep further went on to explain that "we feel that offering the drive externally is the best way to give consumers the ultimate choice to create their own high-definition experiences." Warner drops HD DVD, goes Blu-Ray only - SendMeRSS
2008-01-05 03:46:25
Warner drops HD DVD, goes Blu-Ray onlyFiled under: NewsThe question we find ourselves asking is "what does Michael Bay think?" Warner Bros. Entertainment today announced that the company will discontinue releasing its movies on HD DVD beginning in May of this year in favor of Blu-Ray exclusivity. The decision comes as Warner Bros. CEO Bary Meyer airs concerns that "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger." In other words, if one format doesn't win out soon, a newer format could dominate them both. Digital downloads, perhaps? Maybe Michael Bay was right after all. Whatever your position in the format war (we're happy with our DVDs, thanks), this represents a big blow to HD DVD, and rumor has it that Warner Bros. received a hefty chunk of change in exchange for Blu-Ray exclusivity. So, starting this summer, your 360 HD DVD player might be feeling a bit lonely (except for the fine films from Paramount and Dreamworks, of ...

Give Metal Slug 3 the blood it deservesFiled under: News, Xbox Live ArcadeFans of the Metal Slug series may have been disappointed to learn that Metal Slug 3 was stripped of its lifeblood for the Xbox Live Arcade release. The be more precise, the game was stripped of the fountains of blood created when characters get shot, stabbed, eviscerated, or otherwise dispatched. The blood was sneakily replaced with sweat for the North American release, as if the crafty people at SNK Playmore thought we wouldn't notice. Thankfully, there is a fix, and it's not even difficult to do. So, how does one turn on the red stuff? Is it ABACABB? No, much simpler actually. All you have to do is switch your console's language settings to Japanese. See, easy, right? The only hard part now is making sure you can find your way back to the language settings again. Good luck with that.[Via Joystiq] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Richard Mitchell - Fri, 04 Jan 2008 23:00: ...

How To Ruin Christmas - SendMeRSS

How To Ruin ChristmasFor many children Christmas is a joyous toy bonanza. Sometimes though our hopes and dreams fall prey to cruel fate as our newly unpackaged happiness-devices break down tragically quick. Whether it’s due to faulty manufacturing or clumsiness, nothing can be so disheartening to a child as having a much anticipated toy broken so soon after Christmas day. Imagine the sorrow of six year old Danny Emsley of England when his younger brother destroyed the brand new Wii his parents had gotten him. Four year old Ellis was reportedly upset that his brother was ignoring him in favor of playing the Wii and took matters into his own hands so to speak. In a display of sadly hilarious indignation he destroyed the console in a most poetically appropriate manner: by urinating on it. The boys’ father, Darren, contemplated whether the console would be covered under their home contents insurance, musing that it must qualify as ‘a leak’. Related PostsAngels Onlin ...

Omega Five Hits Xbox Live Next Week It's not often we see original Japanese games hitting Xbox Live Arcade, but Hudson has announced that next week will see Omega Five take its bow on the download service. The crazy side-scrolling shooter, developed by Natsume, will be available for $10 on Wednesday, January 9. We played an early version of the game at Hudson's office last year. Naughty Dog President Confirms Uncharted Sequel In an interview with French news site TF1, Naughty Dog president Christophe Balestra mentions that his team will soon be working on sequel to  PS3 title Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Sony has so far remained mum on the subject of a follow up. Good, if not terribly surprising, news. Uncharted has been very well received and as such is a valuable exclusive for the PS3, making the sequel all but inevitable.  I played through Uncharted over the holiday break and personally found it to be wildly entertaining. Besides being decidedly easy on the eyes, its blend of extremely well-done storytelling and fast paced action makes you feel like you're inside an Indiana Jones movie. There are definitely some flaws--the camera is problematic at times and I found the jetski levels to be a serious drag--but I was happy to forgive them in exchange for the chance to search for El Dorado with Nathan Drake. Journey Escape Demo Cart: An Update - SendMeRSS

Journey Escape Demo Cart: An UpdateSo after some begging and reaching out to the classic gaming community, we finally have some good intel on that Journey Escape Atari 2600 demonstration cartridge that I picked up in my thrift store travels last month. I did take it by Jenn's place to try it out, and as it turns out, the contents of the cartridge are identical to the retail Journey Escape game. Supercollector Ian Baronofsky (check out his credentials) lets us know:The Journey cart is probably a sales sample demo cart. Nowadays we just call that a 'prototype' despite the fact that most of these samples contain completed released ROMs. Journey is among the most commonly found or owned prototypes in collectors hands. Having one is practically a right of passage for hardcore collectors, and traditionally has not been an extremely expensive purchase. In today's market environment for video game rarities, the value is probably somewhere between $50 and $150. I would guess that on ...

Earthworm Jim Designer: Media Ownership Is A Dying Concept - SendMeRSS
2008-01-03 22:04:18
Earthworm Jim Designer: Media Ownership Is A Dying Concept Earthworm Jim designer Dave Perry believes the "concept of [media] ownership is going to go away" thanks to the proliferation of online distribution. In an interview with Gamasutra, Perry said that online distribution's ability to give people games, film and music on demand would crush the traditional distribution methods in much the same way that Netflix's DVD-by-mail business model has trounced video mega-chain Blockbuster. According to Perry, Netflix's ability to give him whatever film he wants, whenever he wants is a precursor to online distribution removing the need for people to own anything. When people are able to acquire any media instantly, there will simply be no need to keep a collection of DVDs, CDs or games.I agree fully with Mr. Perry with one caveat: digital distribution's proliferation serves as an introduction to the ease of piracy for the average person. If online downloads become the norm fo ...
