PS3 sales drastically improve in November NPD data - SendMeRSS
2007-12-14 17:27:39
PS3 sales drastically improve in November NPD dataFiled under: BusinessSony fared relatively well in this month's NPD figures. It may still have been beaten by other platforms, but it's finally generating respectable sales numbers. 466,000 PS3 systems were sold in November, a 285% increase over the previous month's sales. According to Sony, the "PS3 had the biggest October to November sales increase of any hardware platform."Surprisingly, PS2 sales are still going strong. In fact, the incredible strength of the PS2 may still be getting in the way of PS3 performance. Hardware sales reached 496,000, a 170% increase over last month's sales. The press release also reiterates that "Since its release in North America on Oct. 26, 2000, more than 120 million hardware units and more than a billion units of PlayStation 2 software have sold worldwide, making it the best-selling gaming platform ever released."Software sales were also strong in November, with retail dollars from PS3 sales tota ...

Stringer says PS3 games "infinitely more fun" than Wii - SendMeRSS

Stringer says PS3 games "infinitely more fun" than WiiFiled under: NewsWe love Sony - you know we do - but sometimes the company's figureheads will come out with the most ridiculous things when a microphone is pressed against their faces. We're not going to reel off a list of previous atrocities, in order to prevent some peoples' blushes (Phil Harrison and Ken Kutaragi, we're looking at you). Instead, we'll look at the latest batch of hilarious sound-bytes-in-text-form, this time from Sony CEO Howard Stringer. He suggests that PS3 games are infinitely more fun than than the Wii's. We're perfectly happy to believe Stringer when he says this, but without clear proof (preferably on lined paper, worked out with a 2B pencil with the answer underlined) we're not going to be satisfied. PS3 and Wii games are very different, yes - but is one system more fun than the other? That's down to personal taste, surely. It's a shame, really, because everything else Stringer said in the article we'v ...

Around Azeroth: Kirin'var VillageFiled under: Screenshots, Around Azeroth Jason sends us this shot of the haunted city of Kirin'var in Netherstorm. Inside this the Violet Tower at the heart of this ghostly town is one of the more amusing quests chains in Outland, given by Archmage Vargoth. And perhaps it's not the quest line itself that's amusing as the quest item that you can keep long after the quest is completed: Archmage Vargoth's Staff, which allows you to summon an image of the Archmage wherever you might be. Do you have your own gallery of Archmage Vargoth -- or any other entertaining quest chain? We want to see them on Around Azeroth! WoW, Casually: December 14 to 20 and Feast of Winter VeilFiled under: Events, PvP, WoW, Casually, Battlegrounds Each week, Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player who has 2 hours or less to play at a time. The weather outside may be frightful, but the Feast of Winter Veil begins Saturday which is always delightful. Well, the weather isn't frightful where I live, but I used to live where there are those season-things, so I feel for you in my high 60s and sunny. Really, I do.Of course, the seasons don't change in Azeroth either, but the weekly Call to Arms bonus weekends do. This week it's Eye of the Storm. My EotS tip for this week is: let the Wookiee win. Er, let the Droods run with the flag. Otherwise, they're going to spend all their time whining in BG chat about how slow Ghostwolf form is, etc. Seriously, life's too short to listen to all that bellyaching -- though I suppose there's not much else to whine about in EotS. I mean, this is a Battleground where standing arou ...

Child's Play raffle donations soar to over $12,600Filed under: Fan stuff, Odds and ends, News items, Contests, Fan artIf you haven't heard of the fabulous raffle being hosted by the folks at the Bronze Kettle, then you must have been living in a box. A box where you hadn't heard that the donations count has reached $12,654.00! That is definitely cause for celebration; and celebrate we shall! To be fair, one person donated $10,000, but as Shelbi points out, even if this hurts your chances to win one of their many prizes, the tickets are still for charity. In fact, 100% of the money raised will be heading straight to Child's Play.If you haven't purchased your tickets yet, or you have a few extra bucks lying around, head over before it's too late! Currently, the raffle is scheduled to take place at 11:00pm CST today, Friday the 14th of December, at Booty Bay on the US server Dark Iron. Not only will you get the chance to participate in the server event, possibly hosted on vent, but th ...

Breakfast Topic: Your favorite places in Azeroth... and beyond! - SendMeRSS

Breakfast Topic: Your favorite places in Azeroth... and beyond!Filed under: Breakfast topics, Leveling When leveling my latest alt (a Druid, thank you for asking!), it's become very apparent that there are certain zones in the game that I simply fly through -- and other zones in the game where I can't seem to make any progress. Every character I get into the 40s, for example, hits Stranglethorn Vale and comes to a screeching halt. It's not because it's not well-designed or because it's a poor place to quest and level, but because I just don't like the place. (Sure, it was fun to spend ten or more levels there the first time and perhaps even the second time -- but by now it's too long in one place for my short attention span.) However, I burn through quests in Felwood and Winterspring, the two zones comprising some of my favorite places in Azeroth. So today I wonder what some of your favorite places in the World of Warcraft are -- and why?Permalink | Email this |&nbs ...

Insider Trader: Hawking wares via the webFiled under: Fishing, Making money, Insider TraderInsider Trader is your inside line on making, selling and using player-made products. It was an idea hiding in plain sight, so obvious that nobody thought of it: set up a web site to take orders for an in-game product. No, not a gold-selling site, not designed to generate real-world currency - instead, a site for collecting orders from players on a particular server for in-game service in exchange for in-game gold. That's exactly what Dethecus' first and biggest fishing entrepreneur, Koobluh (aka Chris Reinking), has done with Elite Fish Vendor. Unanimously applauded by other players, Elite Fish Vendor is not only an online ordering depot for fishing and cooking products, but also a growing reference for fishers and cooks of all levels. Koobluh generously shares his knowledge and experience with a free, open-to-all raw fish data list, fishing and cooking leveling guides and a brand new appl ...

Gran Turismo 5 speeds into Japanese storefrontsFiled under: New Releases, NewsIt would seem Gran Turismo 5 Prologue has made its launch in Japan and to the lauding of many a critic as an excellent game. Er, partial game. Well, we aren't entirely sure how to classify it, but it's launched in Japan. If you're really good at reading Japanese (or lines of question marks as this Firefox browser insists on showing), you can probably glean some more information from the listing, but as far as we can tell, it's totally a different language and we, like, can't read it.There seem to be planned updates through the new year already. It is great to see such continued support for the game. Hopefully we'll get our hands on it soon enough and see how poorly we actually drive. NPD: Nintendo Tops Charts Before Christmas - SendMeRSS
2007-12-14 08:04:36
NPD: Nintendo Tops Charts Before Christmas After a Thanksgiving and Black Friday filled month, sales in the US surely would climb, and climb they have. We are all fairly used to the order of things, but Nintendo’s two consoles hovered at the 1 million and 1.5 million marks respectively. We like to call that a respectable effort and can only wonder what the Wii would be capable if it wasn’t still supply constrained. Meanwhile the 360 takes a very close third, benefitting from having stock, it’s been keeping close to the Wii since Halo’s release. Meanwhile the Playstation family may have been all in the bottom rungs, but all sold very well, unfortunately though combined still doesn’t take down the DS. Playstation 3’s sales nearly tripled this month, which may very well be a start of a great new trend into 2008. It’s still anyone’s game… unless you include the Nintendo DS, then it’s just no contest. If only to be a Nintendo emplo ...

NPD: Four Titles At Million Mark In November - SendMeRSS
2007-12-14 08:04:36
NPD: Four Titles At Million Mark In November What a great month it was for hardware this month, and what an even better month for software. In total four titles on a single system were around or above on million sold, and that’s only accounting for single platforms, as three of those four are found on multiple platforms. Super Mario Galaxy sold very well, but top honors went to Call of Duty 4. We all know Nintendo is rolling in the money in hardware, but software goes to Activision, who is laughing their way to the bank. It’s interesting to note that formerly top selling Guitar Hero 3 on the 360 did not breach the list, instead PS2 cleaned up, with Wii still cracking number 8. It’s a little weird to see a third party title not represented by 360. Could supply constraints be the issue on that one? Meanwhile, Rockband also failed to make the list, while an amazing title, surely the high price tag is holding back the masses. Finally note: Even with 1.5 million in hardwar ...

Microsoft Takes NPD For A Spin - SendMeRSS
2007-12-14 08:04:34
Microsoft Takes NPD For A Spin Microsoft had a good month in November. They sold well with software, and even though Nintendo stole the show with hardware, over 700K was nothing to shake a stick at. Already Microsoft was prepped, focusing on their better highlights for the month of November, and instead glossing over their Bronze placing finish. “Fueled by the greatest holiday lineup in video game history, consumers spent more holiday dollars on Xbox 360 consoles, games and accessories than any other platform in the month of November according to NPD. #1 in Game Sales: Four of the Top Ten Titles are on Xbox 360, compared to three on the Wii and two on the PS3. Super Stardust HD overhaul coming soonFiled under: Rumors, Game Patches Some European PSN users have stumbled across an item on the store which, it seems, ought not to be there. The Super Stardust HD update doesn't appear for everyone, but those who do see it noticed there's a large "Coming Soon" slapped across the image. But what could an update to SSHD contain? Isn't it already amazing enough as it is? The item's description is a fantasy wishlist of desirable features, including improved graphics and sound, new game modes, split screen multiplayer, a ship editor and clan support. Clan support? How exactly that will work we have no idea, but it does give us the impression that our favourite dual analogue shooter will be heading online when the update hits. Sounds good to us - a little too good. Make of the above image what you will, we're going to remain cautiously optimistic for now, even if it is just wishful thinking. 10 Disappointments of 2007 - SendMeRSS
2007-12-14 04:52:10
10 Disappointments of 2007As 2007 winds down, it’s time to take a look at some of the missteps made this year. Of course we’ll follow it up with some of the biggest surprises, but it’s always best to get the negatives out of the way first. 2007 is undeniably one of the strong years for videogame growth that we have seen, very likely in this decade. The rapid expansion of the videogame market can easily be placed on the wings of Nintendo’s two huge products. 360 finally hit it stride with a wealth of games, and Sony’s platforms are still kicking, and for the PS3 starting to gain momentum. So with all the good news, what exactly was disappointing this year? 10. Assassin’s Creed Here’s a debatable one and hence why it has been relegated to the tenth spot. Despite stellar sales, there was something about Assassin’s Creed that was disappointing for Ubisoft, and that’s the way it was critically received. Despite some strongly trusted indi ...

No patch 2.5 planned - SendMeRSS
2007-12-14 04:27:34
No patch 2.5 plannedFiled under: Patches Patch 2.3 launched relatively recently, 2.3.2 is on the PTR, and 2.4 is presumably pretty far from PTR still. As it turns out, that is expected to be about it in the way of pre-Wrath patches, according to Eyonix. 2.4 will introduce the Sunwell Plateau, an outdoor zone, including a 5-man dungeon and a 25-man raid at a harder-than-T6 difficulty level. There will probably be the now-usual assortment of class balance changes, new crafted items, and new daily quests as well, and being an outdoor zone, Sunwell Plateau will probably have some regular quests and a faction of its own as well.Does the fact that there's no patch 2.5 planned mean anything about how close Wrath is? I'd say there's probably not much connection. If Blizzard knew that it was going to be, say, a year before the expansion, then yeah, they'd probably plan for another content patch. But seeing as how Eyonix saw fit to add "Time will tell, however" on to his post, I'd say we ca ...

Assassin's Creed sells 2.5 million copies - SendMeRSS

Assassin's Creed sells 2.5 million copiesFiled under: NewsUbisoft has announced that Assassin's Creed has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide on Xbox 360 and PS3. The game vastly outperformed the company's expectations, and Ubisoft further announced that the game is "the fastest-selling new video game intellectual property ever in the U.S." Not too shabby. On the heels of the good news, Ubisoft has raised its sales outlook to €840 million ($1.2 billion). Furthermore, the company expects to sell at least 5 million more units in 2007-08 (up 2 million from earlier estimates). It was also revealed that three Ubisoft titles, Tom Clancy's EndWar, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, and Far Cry 2 have been delayed until Ubisoft's fiscal year 2008, which begins in April (the games were previously scheduled to release in early 2008). Finally, the Ubisoft will unveil more details on its incoming lineup of games and will disclose sales figures for the third quarter 2007-08 on January 2 ...

Are you a recipe completist? - SendMeRSS

Are you a recipe completist?Filed under: Cooking, Analysis / OpinionEarlier today I was perusing the official WoW forums, looking for any new info about our favorite game, when I noticed a particular post. Warla, the player in question, was announcing that they had collected all of the cooking recipes in the game. At first glance, this might not seem like much of an accomplishment, but there are a lot of recipes that are more readily available to one faction or the other, such as Dig Rat Stew. Taking into consideration that Warla is on a PvP server and can't easily do a trade through the neutral auction house, this is actually quite a feat.I'm not really a perfectionist when it comes to my professions (and I'm definitely not the type who would announce such accomplishments in a public forum), but I have known other people that were. One guy I know is a blacksmith and spent hours researching and tracking down every last pattern that was available to him. The same guy was making a p ...

Research On American Gamers - SendMeRSS
2007-12-07 09:54:51
Research On American GamersSome research results have been released today about the attitudes of Americans in regards to video games. The poll was conducted by Hill & Knowlton and sadly the only results they published on their website are the ones that go along with the opinion that games are generally negative. The results they mention are that 60% of adults believe that the government should regulate the sales of violent or mature content video games, while 51% believe that the government should regulate the content itself. According to the ESA there’s a lot more pertinent information that they’re not bothering to mention, as the group approached the ESA with the results of this study the previous summer. The study found that more than two thirds of Americans aged 18-34 currently play video games, less than 20% of Americans believe that playing video games is a negative way to spend time with friends and family and more than half of families think video games are a po ...

Nintendo’s recent European release list for 1st half of 2008 doesn’t mention Brawl at all, which means it’s either a mistake — which rarely happens on Nintendo release lists — or the game is simply set for a second half-2008 release.
