CNN is reporting that it's happened again in China- a man has died after a three-day gaming binge in a cyber cafe.So many things wrong with this story. First of all, how does someone sit in an internet cafe for three days without anyone else noticing? I'm sure that it must have been a huge, 24 hour, windowless warehouse type of place, with people coming and going all the time, but still, what business would allow people to basically live in their building?And then, of course, there's the gaming angle. Videogames and the Internet didn't kill this man, people, despite what CNN says:The paper said that he may have died from exhaustion brought on by too many hours on the Internet.Actually, I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure he died from exhaustion brought on by staying awake for too long. A seek-and-find puzzle game based on Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile has been downloaded ten million times since its debut in April.The game was designed by Jane Jensen, author of the Gabriel Knight series and the as-yet-to-be-released Gray Matter. Someone has done for poor Linnet Doyle during her vacation on a cruise down the Nile. It's up to you, as legendary Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, to use your little gray cells to figure out who is innocent and who is a murderer. As with most seek-and-find games, most of your time will be spent hunting for random items in cluttered rooms around the ship. Death on the Nile does it a bit better than most, though, by making some of the items relevant to your investigation, such as the scattered pictures of a torn-up letter, or an initial apparently drawn on the wall in blood. Even if you’re not familiar with the name of Havok, you’d have to be living under that proverbial rock in order to not have seen some of their works. The list of games that have used their products is a lengthy and heady group: Bioshock, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Halo 2, LOTR Online: The Shadows of Angmar and Heavenly Sword just to name a few.Intel has just bought them, likely in pursuit of a double-pronged strategy. Hudson announced officially its worldwide plans for TurboGrafx-CD games on the Wii's Virtual Console.In a press release today, Hudson announced the games will be available starting in October in Japan and "soon thereafter" in Europe, North America and Australia for 800 Wii Shop points.The release promises over five TG-CD games in 2007 and over ten in 2008, but doesn't go into any details on which specific games will be available. Even so, we're relatively sure that Japanese shooter Cho Aniki won't be among those classics coming across the pond. Silicon Knights Scoffs at Epic's Legal Motion

In the legal game of ping pong that is the suit between Silicon Knights and Epic Games, the last volley was a counterclaim and a motion to dismiss from Epic. Epic's paperwork alleged that Silicon Knights'accusations were "lacking in factual or legal merit." SK's original claim against Epic basically said that Epic willfully "sabotaged" games using Unreal Engine 3, using money it got from selling the license to fund development of Gears of War. Epic argued that sabotaging its own licensees would end up costing the company money in the long run, and therefore made no sense. Silicon Knights scoffed at that argument, saying: Epic's assertion that it has 'a vested interest' in Silicon Knights' success and continued use of the Engine is far-fetched, at best. Wondering if your PlayStation 2 games will work on the new model of the PlayStation 3, which switches to software-based backward compatibility?Sony has (albeit quite belatedly) updated its compatibility database to include the 80 GB version. Unfortunately, you can't just scroll through a list of games like the European version -- you have to input a game name manually to see the issues. The upside is that it gives you more detailed error reports. Here's some of the issues I discovered by checking random PS2 games from my shelf: Dawn of Mana: "Throughout gameplay, various characters move erratically and/or do not perform as intended." Metal Gear Solid 3: "Throughout gameplay, the title performs at a significantly slower than normal performance speed." Earlier this week, Eurogamer reported that the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark would be coming out after the 360 and PC versions, but Atari has stepped in to say that it was all just a misunderstanding. The conjecture started when Eurogamer noticed that the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark had been left off Atari's most recent release list. A quick follow up got them the response that "[the 360 and PC versions] are the first to be released," with the PS3 version trailing along sometime afterwards. But apparently the PS3 version was supposed to be on the list all along, and the whole thing is just one big oops. All three versions--PC, 360, and PS3--will launch simultaneously some time "soon."
