Clean your PS3 fan with quick and easy test
2008-04-13 00:58:58
Dusty fans can greatly affect a console's performance. They also generate a vexatiously louder than usual noise emanating from your powerful machine. If you want to keep things nice and tidy and/or want your fans running smoother, you'll want to have a quick look at this clip. It's basically a video instruction about running a fan test on your PS3 which also blows out the dust and essentially cleaning it up. What's nice is there's very little effort involved, so you can actually do this every day. Just a warning though, it's only for 40GB models -- doing this on other models will cause the unit to explode nothing to happen.

Super Swing Golf teeing off in Europe this June
2008-04-13 00:57:23
Manga-fied golf title Super Swing Golf (or, as U.S. readers may know it, Super Swing Golf: Season 2) will be appearing in terminally neglected Europe this June 27th, courtesy of Rising Star Games. As most Americans may well have already played/completed/traded in/completely forgotten about Tecmo's criminally under-rated golf game (it launched stateside back in December), it probably won't hurt to remind you that there's plenty of mascot cameo goodness, and quite a lot of a very serious sport not being taken seriously in the slightest. Which is for the best, really.[Via press release]

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue PS3 review
2008-04-13 00:56:37
The PlayStation 3-exclusive Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is available at either retail stores or available for purchase and a 1.87GB download at the PlayStation Store for a price of $39.99 / £24.99 / €39.99. The download is so much smaller than the retail version, because you won't be loading any cinematics until you choose to play them in-game via the GT TV, once you do they'll be downloaded from the server. The Blue Ray disc version however will give gamers some extra incentives including a behind-the-scenes High Definition video feature called "Beyond the Apex".

Sony: 80GB PS3 Demand Exceeded Expectations
2008-04-11 02:01:53
In a surprising twist of events, Sony America VP of marketing Scott Steiberg revealed in an interview that the company underestimated the demand for the 80GB PS3 model, saying that $499 didn't seem "that big of a deal" to consumers. He cites the additional hard disk space and backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games being the driving factor behind the 80GB model, which has since been phased out and replaced with the cheaper 40GB model. The company hopes on generating "mass market appeal" by marketing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle and the DualShock 3 which are coming out soon.

Rumor: Nintendo Wii Wheel MSRP may be $10
2008-04-11 01:59:59
GoNintendo reports that the latest issue of Nintendo Power states the manufacturer's suggested retail price for the Nintendo Wii Wheel is $10. It appears that some retailers aren't taking the suggestion to heart, as Gamestop, Amazon and some other stores are selling the glorified plastic shell for $15 separetly from the game.Best Buy seems to currently be one of the only retailers we could find that had the product listed and selling for $10 (but we're sure that the Joystiq army of internet detectives can find more). We've contacted Nintendo for confirmation on what the actual MSRP of the Nintendo Wii Wheel is and will update as soon as we receive an answer.

Ensemble talks Halo Wars multiplayer
2008-04-11 01:59:16
Halo.fr recently sat down with Graeme Devine of Ensemble Studios regarding Halo Wars. Of particular interest in the (interestingly translated) interview is further talk about how long multiplayer games should last. While it was reported earlier this year that Ensemble expects a typical match to last from 15-30 minutes -- RTS fanatics know that this is pretty short for the genre -- Devine notes that games can feasibly range from 10 to 45 minutes with the average landing at around 20 minutes. Probably the other most noticeable tidbit was Devine's response regarding local multiplayer. When asked about whether or not local mutliplayer was an option, Devine responded, "You can play against the AI in skirmish mode. That's a large component of the game." Reading between the lines, it sounds like competitive local multiplayer is out, but cooperative multiplayer is in. There are a few other interesting subjects covered in the interview like the fact that Ensemble will be including Easter e ...

Space Invaders Get Even on Wii! A fantastic twist on old gameplay
2008-04-11 01:58:16
Taito Japan unveiled Space Invaders Get Even for the Nintendo Wii. In a twist on the classic arcade gameplay, this time around the Space Invaders are planning a counterattack and it’s up to you to make sure they “Get Even” with the humans that have been shooting them down for the past 30 years! The player controls a UFO with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, which guides 300 “Space Invaders” to execute its every command. The analogue stick on the Nunchuk attachment is used to direct the UFO, while the Wii Remote will be used to move around a total of 300 “8-BIT” Invaders. It’s unclear what abilities each set of “Space Invader” aliens will have, but the first set of screenshots at Gamewatch show different sets dispersing to swarm targets, as well as forming a large, vertical wall as you’re used to seeing them attack in. Each stage consists out of three areas like an armored city, seaside city and jungle zone. The game is set for release in Japan sometime in 2008. — Ti ...

Xbox 360 chopper + leather pants = gaming biker
2008-04-11 01:57:38
Australian GAME stores are running a scratch-off promotion (just like lottery tickets, but better!) where with every Xbox 360 that's purchased, customers get a chance to scratch and win all kinds of gaming prizes. Prizes including a custom crafted and super manly Xbox 360 chopper that's still being produced. You can hop on over to their "See the Bike!" page to watch the eventual evolution of the bike, because right now, it's looking kind of naked and non-360 themed. But we're sure it'll be 360'ized soon enough if the chopper's guages are any indication of things to come. Buy a 360 from GAME and (possibly) go vroom, vroom!

New Blu-ray tech supports enhanced iPhone integration, PS3 compatibility possible
2008-04-11 01:56:19
A company called Netblender is working on new technology that will allow enhanced communication between Blu-ray players and Apple handheld devices such as the iPhone. Dubbed BD Touch, this new tech will turn an iPhone into a remote control for Blu-ray players. More interestingly, it will allow the device to interact directly with BD movies by: displaying extra movie info on the iPhone, maintain a database of your movie collection, and obtain digital copies of movies on a Blu-ray disc. This last feature sounds quite similar to Sony's very own portable copy. This makes us wonder if the new tech will be integrated into the PS3 or if it will only hit other Blu-ray players. A formal announcement regarding the new tech will be made tomorrow. We'll know soon enough then.[Via Gizmodo]

2008-04-11 01:55:28
It's already Thursday in Japan, which is a particularly mundane trivia fact until you realize that Mario Kart Wii is also scheduled to hit Japan on Thursday. Ergo, logic dictates that the game is out now. For the rest of the world who has to wait until Friday (Europe) or until April 27 (North America), Wii Nintendo has compiled a video (embedded above) of all 32 tracks in the game.Clocking in at almost two hours, you might want to go make popcorn before sitting down to view. Full course listing after the break; although it should go without saying, we're going to throw a spoiler alert here for emphasis.Continue reading Video footage of all 32 Mario Kart Wii tracks

Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack also adds new Forge filters
2008-04-10 03:33:28
Bungie reports in their weekly update that the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack (due April 15th) comes with more than just three new maps priced at 800 Microsoft Points (that's US$10 / €9.60 / £6.80 / CAN$12.40 / AU$13.20). To quote: “While the Legendary Map Pack doesn't feature a map that you can build from scratch a la Foundry it does have a pretty unique series of Forge objects and some new knicks and knacks for Legendary purchasers to tool around with. The biggest new things are the Forge filters, these are forge objects that change the camera settings to create a variety of effects.” Outside of the default Basic setting, you’ll get these six filters: Gloomy, Juicy, Old Timey, Pen & Ink, Nova, and the Colorblind effect shown in the screenshot above. “I had a dream. It was not all a dream.” Watch the Halo 3 Darkness Map Pack trailer.

LittleBigPlanet On PSP Rumored
2008-04-10 03:32:10
This would certainly explain some of the delays we’ve been seeing with the game. An inside source has informed CVG that LittleBigPlanet is also PSP bound, likely to also line up with the PS3 release in September. Link up options also would seem to be a very likely candidate, although nothing was given in great detail by the source, so the information is mildly lacking. The game is apparently being developed by the Sony Liverpool office, although they were obviously not forthcoming and have yet to comment on the story. I’ll bet it’ll be something along the lines of them not commenting on rumor and speculation. If indeed true, its certainly been held quiet for a while already, with September rapidly on the horizon. We’ll keep you up to date if we hear anything more about this rumor.

CSI Creator: Gaming Can Save Television
2008-04-10 03:28:25
SAN FRANCISCO -- Television can be saved... by videogames. That's what Anthony Zuiker, creator of the TV phenomenon CSI, told an audience of gaming execs today. Delivering the keynote address at MI6, an annual conference on game marketing, Zuiker said that creating content that extends from broadcast TV to mobile phones to games and back keeps audiences involved no matter what entertainment device they prefer. "The future of all broadcast," Zuiker said, is developing deeper connections with other types of media, and said that television "will suffer" if it doesn't attempt to hook viewers currently more enamored with web clips and videogames. As a concrete example of what CSI has done, Zuiker pointed to one recent episode's use of erotic web models the Suicide Girls in an episode, bringing in fans of that website as well as driving traffic back to Suicide Girls' page even while the episode was still being broadcast.Zuiker also pointed to CSI's virtual world in Second Life ...

First Gears of War 2 Details
2008-04-10 03:25:51
The first bits of details from Gears of War 2 has leaked onto the Internet, courtesy of the latest issue of the Game Informer magazine and an enterprising NeoGAF user. According to his post, the game will pick up six months after the original and will feature several new characters, including the wife of co-op partner Dom. The game will feature drop-in and drop-out co-op play, and will supposedly scale difficulties for each of the player. A new difficulty setting has been added, with Epic Games noting that it wants the game to be accessible to everyone. As expected, the game will feature new weapons, new enemies and a new vehicle. Other inclusions and enhancements include a refined cover system and the removal of the forced walking sections from the original. It will also feature a "SHUT UP" button, letting impatient gamers get straight to the action. "There’s a certain percentage of the audience that wants to skip all that, and they just want to shoot some s—, and we’re more th ...

Interplay reaffirms Fallout MMO; Earthworm Jim, MDK sequels
2008-04-10 03:24:06
It's been awhile since we've had an update on Interplay's long-promised Fallout MMO.To get some of you up to speed: plans for a Fallout MMO that could revive the ailing company were teased out of a November 2006 SEC filing. In April of the following year, Bethesda - already hard at work on Fallout 3 - bought the rights to the series from Interplay for $5.75 million. The deal allowed Interplay to be a licensee, paying Bethesda a 12% royalty on net sales of the still-vaporous Fallout MMO. In August, Interplay's CEO stated in an earning statement that "Fallout Online will play a key role in the future of Interplay" and in November the company revealed ambitions to rekindle franchises like Earthworm Jim, MDK, Descent, and Dark Alliance. Now, in yet another earnings report wrapping up their 2007 fiscal year, Interplay reaffirms its ambition to secure funding for the Fallout MMO as well as "creating sequels to some of its most successful games," notably the four listed above. To that en ...

2008-04-09 05:07:38
So you thought they were done getting in new characters in Warriors Orochi 2: Rebirth of the Demon Lord? Well, you thought wrong.Apparently the clever little designers over at Koei and Omega Force could not get enough of the terrible demon Orochi and they thought it might be worth their while to get him back in a more evolved form. The unlockable, playable character plays a lot like the original, with just a few attack updates here and there making the most recent entry in the Warriors franchise a definite must-try. Incredible Hulk movie game screens
2008-04-09 00:17:08
You might be asking yourself, "what's with the headline?" Well, what more is there to say about these screens of the upcoming Incredible Hulk movie-game other than The Hulk is in them. They don't look especially good and considering the team that brought us Ultimate Destruction is busy doing their own thing and back catalog of developer Edge of Reality consists of the Over the Hedge and Shark Tale game adaptations, we're definitely sticking with the comment that these screens have The Hulk in them. 'Nuff said. Gallery: The Incredible Hulk ("Next-gen" version)

Quake 3 up for motion-sensing, wireless network play on iPod touch
2008-04-07 20:47:26
This has got to be the biggest gaming event of the year, so far atleast. Finally we have video proof along to support the latest Apple claims that it has figured out a way to bring Quake 3 to the iPod touch making it compatible with portable LAN party play. The first-person shooter lets you move characters around using the device´s built-in accelerometer and you shoot by tapping the screen, which looks like it could really suck all the spontaneity out of the entire game. Might be worth a try for the iPod Touch/iPhone next-gen-ness if not for the love of the game! Watch some dude enjoy the cool new app on his touch while you wait to get yours. New PS3 ads are scary but gorgeous at the same time
2008-04-07 20:40:04
It's a shame that these Dali-inspired adverts, made by the Chilean advertising agency BBDO Chile, probably won't be put into circulation outside of South America. But that's also a good thing. We can't help but feel that while these images (second one after the break) look absolutely stunning, there's also something innately unsettling about them. Regardless, they certainly portray the feel of the PS3 and if you saw them on a billboard, it would be hard not to stop and take notice.[Via onAXIS]

Metal Gear Solid 5 will not be made by Hideo Kojima
2008-04-06 23:59:13
Konami’s upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PlayStation 3 (due June 12) is the latest stealth game in a series that has been going strong for the last 20 years. In an interview with Hideo Kojima, creator of the series, he was asked if this was the last game in the series and even if he may not be making another one himself, he said he’d produce more spin-off PSP handheld games and hinted that a Metal Gear Solid 5 sequel might be a possibility without him. Question: Obviously, the first question that’s on everyone’s mind is: Why exactly did you feel this was the right time to end the Metal Gear Solid series? Hideo Kojima answers: I was supposed to end this in MGS2, you know, originally (laughs). And then I created MGS3, and I said, ‘Okay, this is the final one. It’s over.’ But people said, ‘No… there’s still not enough answers (in that game)!’ As a game design, the story was almost complete in MGS1, 2 and 3, or so I initially thought. But of ...
