Solving the Mystery of PS3's Mandatory Installs
2008-04-02 18:11:31
Lately, some PlayStation 3 games have been following a disturbing trend: Mandatory hard-drive install procedures that can take nearly half an hour and suck up around 5 GB of your precious disk space. Recent games like Devil May Cry 4, Lost: Via Domus, and even Sony's own Hot Shots Golf require installation before the game can be played. To get to the bottom of this mystery, MTV reporter Patrick Klepek called the publishers in question... and was stonewalled at every attempt. But he did get an answer on background: It has to do with differences in the ways Blu-Ray and DVD read data. Blu-Ray discs might store much more data than a DVD, but while a DVD laser can read data at different speeds, Blu-Ray can only do it at one speed. Thus, if data optimized for DVD is put onto a Blu-Ray, monstrous loading times can result. To avoid this, developers must come up with ways of getting around this, one of them being installing a few gigs of data to the hard drive for superfast a ...
More Blu-ray 360 Rumors
2008-04-02 18:06:45
It’s hard to do internet news today. Everyone’s pulling pranks all over the internet. Whether it’s the Postal cat silencer, the Diablo Loot Pinata or this wonderful product which begs someone to really create it for Wiiware, there’s a whole lot of jokes out there ready to trip up the writer who takes things a little too seriously. One rumor has surfaced that begs consumption with that perennial grain of salt, not because it’s humorous, but because we’ve heard it denied rather strongly thus far. After the death of HD-DVD many assumed that Microsoft would be doing everything they could to get Blu-ray addons for the Xbox 360. Following some reports that talks had begun, MS representatives came out and put a kaibosh on those rumors, stating that the company was going to be focusing in on downloadable media through the Xbox Live Marketplace. It seems that according to industry sources Lite-On is developing Blu-ray drives for the Xbox 360. The report on the website is slightly co ...
Comic Con '08 brings first glimpse of Gears of War 2
2008-04-02 18:04:56
Thanks to a nifty and well versed press release, today we learn that this year's Comic Con (which will go down April 18th through the 20th) will get an additional injection of video game content with Gears of War 2 taking center stage.Scheduled to take the floor at this month's New York Comic Con, Epic's Michael Capps and GoW2 script writer Joshua Ortega will talk about Gears' origin, its success and give attendees a "glimpse into this year's upcoming Gears of War 2". Whether or not that means actual in-game GoW2 footage or just talking bits, we aren't sure. But our fingers are crossed in hopes that we get a GoW2 video tease come April 18th. We're sure Capps won't let us down. ...
Me and Wii Fit: One Month Later
2008-04-02 18:03:58
I've been using Wii Fit for a little over a month now, and thought you'd want to hear about my progress. All in all, I'm quite impressed with Nintendo's exercise software, especially the Balance Board. Wii Fit is certainly not the first example, even in recent times, of a product that attempts to turn exercise into a videogame. But it's probably the most successful one, and a lot of that is thanks to the controller. Since the Board can determine quite accurately how well you are performing a set of standard exercises, the feedback that you get from the game is meaningful. By turning exercise into a game, Wii Fit plays on the same sort of impulses and positive feedback loops that make videogames compelling.Although I haven't been playing Wii Fit every day, it's successfully gotten me into the frame of mind where I try to exercise every day. For example, I did half an hour of Wii Fit yesterday morning, but the day before, with less time on my hands, I went out and ran ...
MTV 'dates' upcoming PSN games
2008-04-02 18:02:28
MTV's Stephen Totilo has recently had his hands on with all the big first-party PSN games that will be hitting within the next few months. His thoughts on each title are generally very positive, which is great now that we know that they're all coming out between now and June. Totilo lists each of the games (Echochome, Elefunk, PixelJunk Monsters: Encore and WipEout HD) along with a vague release date. While May will be the busiest month of the quarter, April will kick things off with (as well as a Store redesign) PixelJunk Monsters: Encore, an expansion pack for the well received tower defense game, which is pegged for the latter part of the month. Echochrome and Elefunk will keep May interesting until WipEout HD finally gets a release in "late May, or early June".Interestingly, it seems that Echochrome will receive two releases - one for PS3 and one for PSP. Each will be entirely different to the other in terms of level layout, but both will be available for download from the PSN ...
Gears of War Movie Set for 2010
2008-04-02 17:57:18
Nothing gets gamers crossing their thumbs more than the announcement of another video game movie. Mostly there’s collective mutterings of “please don’t let Uwe Boll touch this” along with fervent hopes for success or adequacy depending on people’s level of optimism. Get your digits ready because there’s a date set for the Gears of War movie in the works. So far the only names attached to the project are Stuart Beattie who was a writer for the first “Pirates of the Carribean” film and of course Cliff Bleszinski, the game’s creator. The project is currently sans developer after reports that Len Wiseman (director of the newest Die Hard film) won’t be working on the project. ...
Sony Dismisses Appeal of Extra GTA IV Content
2008-04-01 20:49:09
Though Microsoft would have you believe that its exclusive downloadable content for GTA IV makes the Xbox 360 version more appealing, Sony's Scott Steinberg says it's just not that big a deal. The way Steinberg sees it, GTA IV is so enormous that most players will never feel the need for any additional content. "I personally don't think there's going to be a huge percentage of folks who jump into downloadable content for another price when they're still playing through the core product," he told GameDaily. So, despite the fact that Microsoft "spent the GNP of several small Latin American countries" for the exclusive content, "I think most people will have that Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS3, day and date, same core game shipping on the 360," said Steinberg. Steinberg is spot on when he says that the core version of GTA IV will have more than enough content to keep players happily busy for a long time, but I think he's kidding himself if he believes that th ...

Halo 4: The Secret Files. Everything Bungie talked about
2008-04-01 06:33:41
The following Bungie developer interview notes are a summary of everything Halo 4 the company talked about or what was hinted at. We dubbed it “The Secret Files” that puts one and one together. Every Halo fan obviously knows the (original) Halo trilogy is over (and left with an open ending). But with Ensemble Studios working on the Halo Wars RTS prequel and an episodic Halo: Chronicles cinematic-game trilogy series still in the works by Peter Jackson, would a Halo 4 FPS really be that far fetched? Time to line up the facts… July 14th 2006: Bungie audio director, Marty O’Donnell, said at the UK Game Developers Conference that “We all want Halo to be the great ending to an epic trilogy. We look at what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings films - which each film bettering the previous one and that is what we are aiming for.” September 25th 2007: At the launch of Halo 3 the cinematic designer, Lee Wilson, said “There’s a lot of people who have been working on Halo ...
Wii releases for the week of March 31st
2008-03-31 19:40:52
The final day of March brings word that not much is releasing for the Wii this week. Frankly, we'll take the respite, because our wallet needs a break from having to buy so many Wii and DS games lately. Of course, that isn't to say this week's pair of releases aren't without their merit. Just, as far as we go, we're not interested. This week's releases are: The Monkey King: The Legend Begins WWII Aces What about you all? Picking either of these up? ...
New Guitar Hero: Aerosmith video
2008-03-31 19:23:28
Okay, so that title is (possibly) the last time we're going to be snide about Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. The band might not be our cup of tea, but heck, Guitar Hero is fun, and the not-Aerosmith tracks are actually showing real promise for non-Aerosmith fans. However, just in case you forgot who the real headline act is, Activision cooked up a video of the title in action, and it oozes Aerosmith. There's plenty of bragging about the band's (admittedly very impressive) achievements, before we cut to 3D models of Stephen Tyler and his fellow grandfathers bouncing about the stage to "Sweet Emotion." Actually, the rubber-lipped, leathery-skinned Tyler proves to be perfect fodder for a caricature -- visually at least, he and Joe Perry seem to be a good fit for a Guitar Hero game.Gameplay-wise -- and we barely need to mention this, but we shall -- it looks identical. And why not? It's a winning formula.Gallery: Guitar Hero: Aerosmith ...
No Rock Band DLC announcement today
2008-03-31 19:19:37
What we've all come to know as Rock Band DLC announcement Friday is sorta taking a vacation today with the announcement of no DLC announcement being announced. Hmxsean had to post the sad, sad details over on the official Rock Band forums telling everyone that "due circumstances beyond my control", next Tuesday's DLC will not be announced until the afternoon of Monday, March 31st. The good news to come out of this delay is the fact that we can all dream, pray and hope that our own personal music favorites will make this week's cut. Until Monday ... keep rocking folks.[Thanks, LeightyRx] ...
WoW Bot Author Earned $2.8M Claims Blizzard
2008-03-31 02:11:56
GamePolitics reports that Blizzard is claiming that World of Warcraft bot author Michael Donnelly has made a cool $2.8 million by selling his Glider software. This comes from recent motions filed in court. Glider is a downloadable software that automatically plays the game for the user, letting players go up to level 70 without much personal effort. Donnelly, its author, was sued by Blizzard in February 2007 and both sides have been locked in a legal battle since then. “Blizzard’s designs expectations are frustrated, and resources are allocated unevenly, when bots are introduced into the WoW universe, because bots spend far more time in-game than an ordinary player would and consume resources the entire time,” said the company in a legal statement. Interestingly, Donnelly claims that his program does not violate Blizzard’s copyright because it never makes a true copy of the game client. The software currently sells for $25, with an optional $5 subscription offering additional ...
Star Wars video game announcement next weekend
2008-03-31 02:09:35
GameTrailers.com recently posted a tease about the next installment of their formerly weekly show, GameTrailersTV. The tease hints at an exclusive look at The Force Unleashed as well as excursive announcements set to be revealed on (what else?) SpikeTV a week from tomorrow (April 6). With so many different sub-IP's of Star Wars (see right) the supposed announcement could be all sorts of things. If it's as big as hinted it could be a whole new game, though with so many to choose from getting our hopes up for anything specific is just jumping the gun. Still, the Star Wars video games definitely need a fresh jolt of fun, and if this is a new game from one of the existing properties it would certainly fit with what Lucasarts has said in the past about continuing franchises. ...
Blu-ray movie releases for the week of Mar. 30
2008-03-31 02:08:04
Quite possibly the best musical collaboration ever? Could be, if only 50 Cent would join the mix. But we forgot he's too busy hunting down a diamond encrusted skull in the Middle East. Anyway, so why are the chipmunks and JT featured today? That's because both recording artists are getting Blu-ray releases this week. 10.5: Apocalypse Alvin and the Chipmunks Artie Lange's Beer League Blackbeard Category 7: The End of the World Coyote Ugly: The Double-Shot Edition Hidalgo Justin Timberlake: FutureSex/LoveShow Live from Madison Square Garden The Curse of King Tut's Tomb Unbreakable What's the best Blu-ray release this week? Probably, in this blogger's opinion, Hidalgo. But that's just because he's a huge Omar Sharif fan. Unbreakable comes in second. ...
Final Grand Theft Auto IV Trailer Revealed
2008-03-31 02:06:05
Rockstar Games has just dropped the final trailer for its latest title in the controversy-magnet Grand Theft Auto series and it's not exactly what I would have expected from the company in terms of bombast and spectacle. Don't get me wrong: It looks great and I will definitely be playing this thing the day it comes out, but knowing the boys at Rockstar I had almost expected the game's final trailer would just be a 20 minute long video of bears exploding interspliced with amateur footage of the L.A. riots. ...

GH: Aerosmith to feature Kinks, Cheap Trick, Jett and more
2008-03-29 03:25:52
Guitar Hero fans who are no fans of the Aerosmith will be happy to know that this Summer's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will not be limited to music from the mouth of Steven Tyler. Praise the music gods!Gameinformer received the scoop straight from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry's mouth, when he mentioned that bands like The Kinks, Cheap Trick, Mott the Hoople and Joan Jett will also be featured in GH:Aero. These new band announcements, on top of Lenny Kravitz, The White Stripes and Deep Purple all of which Perry confirmed previously, make GH:Aero a more rounded and acceptable purchase. That said, we wonder how gamers' negative sentiment surrounding Activision and how they're handling the GH franchise will play out and how well GH:Aero will sell. Thumbs up to the new band announcements though. ...
Blizzard's WWI 2008 tickets are all gone
2008-03-29 03:25:17
Were you planning on promising a loved one a "second honeymoon in France" only to abandon her at the airport and beat cheeks to Blizzard's 2008 Worldwide Invitational? Unless you've already reserved your spot you can expect to spend a lot of time sightseeing with your lady: Tickets are all gone, selling out in less than a week.Even if you can get a refund on your plane fare, we'd suggest you still go ahead and take your significant other to the City of Lights. After all those nights coming home from work and finding you asleep in front of the computer, lit only by the dull tan of the Barrens, encased, mummy-like, in a sarcophagus of sweat and Dorito crumbs ... hasn't she earned it? ...
Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack expects release on April 15
2008-03-29 03:24:24
I can bet over anything, you wouldn't have forgotten Avalanche and Halo 2's "Lockout". In compliance with the commendable work done, Microsoft and Bungie expect the release of “Halo 3″ downloadable content on April 15. The game freaks will receive three multi-player maps to add to their delight. Accordingly, they have a lot to offer. So, we are here with the new maps named Ghost Town, Avalanche2, and Blackout. The titles are, in themselves, so very self conveying. Aren't they? The first one i.e. Ghost Town is a battle scratched muddle of slender passageways, while Avalanche2 is a rave review to Sidewinder featuring heaps of vehicles. The final map depicts a moonlit weather station in “the middle of frozen nowhere". Xbox Live gamers can buy the Legendary Map Pack for $10 or £7.50 only with 800 Microsoft Points. Whereas the Halo 3 fans, that can't wait till April 15, may download the game’s earlier Heroic Map Pack free of charge. Image: BuzzfocusSource: Pocket-lint ...

Gran Turismo 5: still a year away
2008-03-29 03:22:25
If you think you can get away with not purchasing Gran Turismo 5: Prologue because you're so sure that as soon as it's released, the whole game will get a release date a couple of months later, you're wrong. On a recent PlayStation Blog post, associate producer at SCEA Chris Hinojosa-Miranda responded to comments about the game, saying that "GT5 is still about a year away. You should just decide now to buy [Prologue], enjoy it, go online and race against anyone and everyone, rank number one worldwide, get the girl (or guy) and become the most popular kid in town." But what if we already are the most popular kid in town? What then, Mr. Hinojosa-Miranda? ...
Nvidia Responsible for 29 Percent of Vista Crashes
2008-03-28 23:24:48
A group of emails made public due to court order during the ongoing "Vista Capable" lawsuit indicate that during 2007 drivers from leading graphics card manufacturer Nvidia were responsible for almost one third of all reported Vista crashes, reports Ars Technica. The newly revealed emails show that during 2007 (Vista's first year of wide release) drivers from Nvidia were responsible for 28.8 percent of all crashes under the operating system, a staggering number considering the crashes attributed to Vista creator Microsoft only account for 17.9 percent of all such incidents. As Nvidia is the most prominent graphics card firm in the world, these crashes predominantly affected gamers who use their hardware to power PC games. PC gamers are generally technically competent enough to avoid most system issues, so the blame for this shoddy driver support must rest squarely on the manufacturer. The lawsuit claims Microsoft artificially inflated the price of PCs during 2006 ...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl downloadable content not coming to Wii
2008-03-28 23:22:37
Gametrailers TV asked the Super Smash Bros. series creator and Super Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai if the Wii fighter would ever see downloadable content, and if yes, what to expect? Masahiro Sakurai answered: “I'm sorry to say that there isn't going to be any downloadable content available for the game. However, we do have user generated content that will be passed around. For example, you'll see custom built stages coming through the internet to you.” Watch the video interview about Brawl here: ...
Wii getting cell phone shovelware
2008-03-28 23:21:47
In companies' rush to capitalize on the industry's fascination with waggle, the Wii has become no stranger to games we'd sooner use to prop up the short leg of our coffee table than play. Much as it seems counterintuitive, novelty has not been par the course for the console so much as it has been quick cash-ins, though we continue to look to the Wii's digital download service WiiWare as the platform's saving grace. It seems, however, that even WiiWare will not be immune to its share of shovelware, with mobile game developer-publisher Gameloft planning to use the service as a receptacle for cell phone games. We wouldn't mind so much if the company had originality on the brain, but its first effort, a Breakout clone going by the name of Block Breaker Deluxe, doesn't give us much hope. The download will be released in Japan in April before launching in other regions at a later date, giving us one to watch out for, if only to know what to avoid once WiiWare launches in North America on ...
Turok Multiplayer Map Pack now on Marketplace
2008-03-28 23:20:58
Announced yesterday, the new Turok Multiplayer Map Pack is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace at the nice price of 400 Microsoft points. This 307.7MB download features five multiplayer maps including Break Out, Desolation, Sentinel, Inconclusive Tests and A Rivalry Continues each breaking down to around $1 per map. The pricing isn't too shabby, but we have a feeling that if it were priced any higher this DLC would only be downloaded by a few dozen fanboys. We're just being honest ... sorry. ...
