Grand Theft Auto IV Limited Edition Xbox 360 to be out soon
2008-03-24 21:00:47
The Grand Theft Auto IV release next month is just about the most anticipated gaming event of the year and Microsoft is all set to add to the joy by launching a special limited edition Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox 360. The celebratory do features an Xbox 360 Elites system on the inside with custom GTA box art on the sides as well as an awesomely faceplate. Cool accessories include a wireless controller with keyboard, headset and a remote apart from other goodies which are neatly housed in a separate briefcase. And since there are only going to be 500 of these out in the market, we suggest you bribe the neighborhood store’s clerk to secure you a copy! Source: Slashgear

WoW Interface's Patch 2.4 Survival Guide
2008-03-24 17:01:30
I've talked about the anticipation of 2.4 going live and the pending consequences to your addons package before. Now the folks over at WoWInterface.com have developed an addon survival guide that may help ease the transition to Patch 2.4. With their migration to a more powerful server system and the option to go into ultra-low bandwidth mode, WoW Interface is looking to face the 2.4 addon battle head-on.Their new Patch 2.4 Survival Guide is a concept that many of you many find useful on patch day, in fact you may find that it changes the way you find and update addons. Although many players (including myself) have made the transition to auto-updaters, this page serves some very unique needs.First of all, this page currently shows the top 70 mods, across the listed sites, and puts them all on one page. Each addon has a short description of its function, something that would be very useful for new players looking to get some tried-and-true addons. You may be wondering what the big d ...

Japanese Mario Kart Wii video smorgasbord
2008-03-24 17:00:58
If you weren't turned off from Mario Kart Wii after the announcement that it would be sans-serpentile-steering, the gaggle of (somewhat poor quality) gameplay videos recently posted by GameTrailers might just tickle your fancy. Featuring the above intro for the Japanese version of the game as well as a number of features on some of the series' returning maps, it certainly fired a nostalgic red shell into our heart of hearts. We'll be bringing those blue sparks when the game hits U.S. store shelves on April 27 -- who wants to be first for a five-course meal consisting solely of banana peels and our dust?

Rock Band Store launches, is awesome
2008-03-24 16:56:01
The much-improved Rock Band store announced to the world yesterday is now available on Xbox Live and PSN. A 30-second download and installation gives players access to the streamlined song-buying interface, which features audio previews and individual instrument difficulties for each song, as well as a much simpler way to sort and browse through the growing selection of music.Besides the cool new store, we're also extremely gratified by the much-needed faster loading of DLC provided by the patch. After a one-time file creation upon the first post-patch load, the annoying little "loading additional content" animation was reduced from roughly ten seconds to about one second in our tests on Xbox Live. The physical "download data file" that actually speeds up the process takes up a paltry 112KB on our system, meaning there's no reason not to rock out faster!Gallery: Rock Band Music Store

PS3 Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 plagued with online snafus
2008-03-24 05:59:29
According to their website, much of Ubisoft's technical support staff has taken this weekend off in observation of Good Friday and Easter. That's all well and good -- but perhaps, when they aren't draining Cadbury eggs or enjoying fine roasted hams, just one of them could take the time to Google their latest release, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, and discover that a good portion of the console gaming world is ready to swear off all things Clancy. Our tip box has exploded with complaints from owners of the PS3 version of the game -- apparently, a majority of those who try to play online either can't connect or have to suffer staggering amounts of lag. We'd expect a bandwidth epidemic such as this to be patched post-haste -- we guess Ubisoft didn't anticipate we'd actually want to play their game on the first weekend of Eastertide. What, did they think those terrorists would hunt themselves?

Sonic Unleashed confirmed, mostly
2008-03-24 05:26:21
Some video and screens came out of what looked like a new Sonic the Hedgehog game, identified as Sonic Unleashed. After this leak, Sega issued a press release to a German magazine called Sega On confirming the existence of the game -- and then Sega On removed it. Which means that we don't know what's real, if anything. We also don't know which platform or platforms the game will come out on -- the information out there says 360 and Wii, at least.Sega On now says that Unleashed is an unprecedented collaboration between Sega teams in Japan, Europe, and the U.S., designed to "rebuild the Sonic brand and prove that it could work in 3D environments." It involves a werewolf-style Sonic, either as a player transformation or as an enemy. It's all very confusing, but we can at least say with some certainty that some Sonic game is coming to some system. Check Gamersyde for a bunch of (likely) screenshots, and hit the post break for a video! It looks ... really cool, and mostly 2D -- which t ...

Defense cap defined
2008-03-24 05:18:37
Many WoW players (and several of our readers) often comment that there is no such thing as a defense cap. This is true in the strict sense that there is no upper limit on how much defense you can have, nor any statistical diminishing returns. However, that's not to say that there's not a point where the utility provided by more defense starts to fall off - so there is a point where the utility given by more defense actually provides a practical diminishing return, and that point is referred to as the defense cap. What is the magic number? 490 defense for Warriors and Paladins, and 415 defense for Feral Druids. To come about this number, you need to do a little math. First, it's important to note that a raid "boss" mob is considered three levels above the player. This means that the math is based off the boss mob being a level 73 mob, and the player being level 70. A player's base defense is defined by the formula Base Defense = level * 5. A player that is level 70 would thus have a ...

All the World's a Stage: Finding the right realm
2008-03-24 05:16:58
One of the most common difficulties many roleplayers face is that of finding other people to roleplay with. To help overcome this challenge, All the World's a Stage presents a guide to finding roleplayers in three parts: "finding the right realm" for roleplaying, "joining the right circle" of roleplaying friends, and "wearing the right mask" to attract other roleplayers to you.Due to reasons we have discussed earlier, RP servers can vary widely from a very few who maintain their immersive roleplaying atmosphere, to the majority which often seem little different from a normal PvE or PvP server. Although Blizzard takes their RP server guidelines "seriously," they cannot enforce these rules wholesale, and rely on the players themselves to do much of their own policing and reporting where necessary. RP servers thus vary a great deal in terms of how many people there actually make roleplaying a priority, how many will report someone breaking the RP rules, and how many will strive to ma ...

Master Chief comes to PS3, courtesy of Unreal Tournament
2008-03-24 05:03:48
It was only a matter of time until the Unreal Tournament III community started building some truly spectacular mods for use on PS3. This Master Chief suit, for example, looks just as good (if not better) than his model in Halo 3. Check out (and download) Master Chief, and other characters from Gears of War and Final Fantasy here.[Via Digg]

PS3 Poll Police: Which game has the best downloadable content?
2008-03-24 05:01:35
The Poll Police have noticed a trend on the streets of video gaming lately -- certain titles seem to make their living off of downloadable content. They pass off their retail disc to their customers and inundate them every week with more and more content to keep them coming back for their next fix. It's a problem that doesn't really bother the Poll Police, but it raises an interesting question. We've found three major offenders and want to know which of these culprits you find to have the best and most content available. Since this is a very time-sensitive poll, it'll be interesting to see if the results are different in a few months. Of these, which has the best downloadable content? Guitar Hero III. SingStar. Rock Band. ...

Japanese hardware sales, March 10 - March 16: The Great Egg Hunt edition
2008-03-24 05:00:44
We're sure that many of you currently lay in a Whopper-fueled stupor, unable to will your appendages to lift themselves off of the ground -- but perhaps we could entice you to jump into action for a worthy reward. You see, hidden inside of three posts over the past two months are tiny Easter eggs, just aching to be found by an avid Joystiq reader. The first person to find all three and leave a comment containing the headlines of the stories where the eggs were located wins a prize more valuable than gold -- a B-B-B-Brush with Fame on the next Joystiq Podcast. We've got hints after the jump -- Let the hunt begin! Those who haven't set off in a headstrong search for fame and glory know that true happiness comes from knowing what consoles sold the most in Japan last week. No real shockers from this edition -- the handheld market is continuing to boom, with the PSP dominating overall (though the DS is beginning to nip at its heels), and the 360 is selling at N-Gage-esque speeds.- PSP: ...

In Russia, World of Warcraft page visits you!
2008-03-24 05:00:07
Blizzard has released the Russian World of Warcraft webpage over at their European site. I can't read a darn thing on it, so I'm forced to rely on other's translations of it, and some good old Google Translator action on the press release.A couple interesting things. First, they'll be releasing the fully localized version of Russian WoW in a few months. The second interesting thing is that they're actually looking for some people fluent in Russian to work for them, and this is a good thing since the Russian version of the site isn't nearly as complete as other language's versions of the site. Finally, ignore the translator error given by Google: "Our list of frequently asked questions concerning the withdrawal of Russian version of World of Warcraft." There is no withdrawal, there will be a Russian WoW.The Russian version of WoW was announced back on December 10th, 2007. It's good to see that Blizzard is continuing the localization of the game. Many international users are forced ...

The game is fully 3D and has an original storyline takes place reportedly between MGS1 and 2.MGS Mobile also includes online ranking system and VR missions, according to 1UP. 2008-03-24 04:49:49
This week's ensemble of Blu-ray releases is a bit of a mixed bag. We've got a classic gangster flick, Shakespearean-inspired ballet, an extreme skiing documentary, and lastly a horror film. Can you guess which one is which without looking at the links? If you can, bravo. Bonnie and Clyde Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream Naked Beneath the Water Steep So with a mixed-interest list like this, it seems there would be a movie for everyone in the house this week. Bonnie and Clyde for mom and dad, A Midsummer Night's Dream for the little ones, Steep for your Norwegian house guest, and Naked Beneath the Water for grandma. Oh wait, maybe you might want to reconsider that last one ...

Ubisoft announces unimaginative 'Imagine Rock Star'
2008-03-24 04:44:25
Say what you will about Ubisoft's Imagine line of games (targeted at girls aged 6 to 14), they're generally pretty original. There are precious few game makers trying to tap into the figure skating, fashion designing, and animal healing segments of the burgeoning DS game market. Unfortunately, the same can't really be said for Ubisoft's latest Imagine game announcement, Imagine Rock Star. Not to focus on the negative, but when Imagine Rock Star comes out in June, it will bump up against a veritable cornucopia of competing DS rhythm games, including a couple that have a very similar premise of multiplayer, "join a band" action. We don't want to sell it short before we see it, but we find it hard to "imagine" (ha!) that this game will bring something new to a genre that's already getting a bit overcrowded. Especially when the "ability to customize the look of each band mate in order to become the most stylish rockers" is a major selling point. Then again, we aren't girls aged 6 to 1 ...

EA charging for weapons in Bad Company Beta
2008-03-24 04:43:53
Well with the rise of the microtransaction age we were bound to see some exploitation, and it seems that the horse armor syndrome is rising again, this time over at EA. We've heard about it via several sources already, including a reader, and it appears that the Battlefield: Bad Company Beta lists individual weapons for sale via the XBLM. A total of ten weapons are locked that have text reading "Available for purchase on Xbox Live Marketplace" next to them. The details of this are a bit shaky as of now however, as of those ten weapons, five weapons are listed as simply available for purchase, and five are listed as available in gold edition or for purchase. The gold edition likely refers to the game's collector's edition which sports a faux gold finish and which will apparently have extra content. Now, whether or not collector's editions having in-game items is a good idea isn't the issue, the issue is the microtransactions in regard to in game items. It isn't really an issue wit ...

Halo 3 Heroic DLC pack free Tues the 25th
2008-03-24 04:36:04
So Bungie dropped their latest Weekly Whats Update and it contains some great news. First and foremost there is the news that the first of Halo 3's DLC packs will be free for all to download as of this Tuesday, 2am. So that would be the Heroic Map Pack, which contains the maps, Foundry, Rat's Nest and Standoff. The update also notes that now that the maps are free, they will be required for certain playlists in matchmaking (Ranked Big Team, Social Big Team, Team Slayer and Rocket Race playlists) and will appear in them rather often. To tease those of us who did not buy the download, there is a video of the Heroic maps included in the update as well.As for the portion of the update that does not involve the Heroic Map Pack, there was the news that there would be a new map reveal coming this Tuesday, so hopefully that puts some rumors to rest. Additionally, there was mention of the new Double EXP Team SWAT playlist, the MLG/ESPN Top 10 Halo 3 plays, and a new episode of their podcast ...

EA, Starz Media partner for Dead Space animated prequel
2008-03-24 04:33:09
First comics and now cartoons, Electronic Arts isn't taking any chances that its upcoming space-meets-survival horror title Dead Space will go unnoticed when it drops this Halloween. The latest effort comes by way of a partnership with film company Starz Media for an animated prequel, which according to EA will pick up the story from the last page of the comic book and cover the events up the beginning of the game itself.Starz Media is apparently in talks with unspecified networks to air the animated feature this Halloween, while a DVD release is also planned as well. Showing considerable hope for the project, or perhaps just being blinded by dollar signs, the pair have also cemented plans for further animation projects centered on two other EA franchises, but which ones? Inquiring minds want to know.

Departing Midway CEO bullish on company outlook
2008-03-24 04:32:09
Having to fire a CEO is never a good sign for a company, especially when that company has recently seen massive losses and a board restructuring. But there's still one person willing to defend Midway's business strategy, and that person is, surprisingly enough, departing CEO David Zucker. To be fair, Zucker was interviewed before his replacement by an interim CEO yesterday, but if he saw the writing on the wall he didn't let it show. "We expect to significantly grow our revenues in 2008," Zucker told GamesIndustry.biz last week, adding that naysayers have been predicting the company's demise for "for five years or so." Zucker emphasized that a combination of investment in new technology and established franchises like Mortal Kombat and NFL Blitz will provide the company's saving grace. That might well be true, but any turnaround will unfortunately come too late to be the saving grace for Mr. Zucker.

Classic SFII combos work the same in SFIV
2008-03-24 04:31:37
If you read our hands-on impressions of Street Fighter IV from GDC, you know the game bears more than a passing resemblance to Capcom's classic Street Fighter II (with admittedly updated graphics). Well, the folks at GamesRadar wanted to see just how far that similarity went, and found that many classic combos from the original game work exactly the same way in the new one.The video evidence (also available below the jump) highlights the cosmetic differences in the two games while at the same time showing how seemingly identical the basic gameplay is. We can't say this is necessarily a bad thing -- Street Fighter II is a classic for a reason -- but that classic is already available as a Virtual Console download, an upcoming HD remix, and even a PS2 Anniversary collection. Why are we supposed to trudge out to the arcade for a dressed up version of a 15-year-old experience that we can get at home?Continue reading Classic SFII combos work the same in SFIV

Microsoft apologizes for 360 'cleaning' with Bill Gates-signed replacement
2008-03-24 04:30:44
Most companies in the gaming industry never really atone for their egregious errors -- if so, Nintendo would have sent us a check for the $180 in hard-earned allowance money that we blew on the retina-singing Virtual Boy by now. However, our poor investment in Nintendo's unwieldy system can't compare to the tragedy endured by Nathaniel, whose personalized 360 was wiped clean during a RROD repair. Luckily, Bungie jumped to the rescue with an equally collectible Halo care package -- and a recent delivery from Microsoft served as the caboose to Nate's apologetic gravy train.
Included in said delivery was a handful of games and, most notably, a new 360 signed by the Xbox team, Bungie (including replacement artwork by Rooster Teeth Comics' Luke McKay) and, with the flourish of a solid gold pen, Bill Gates. Whether you call it an act of kindness or a lesson in public relations, we think it's a neat gesture from the folks at Microsoft -- a gesture young Nathaniel will only enjoy for th ...

Halo 3 Legendary DLC details incoming and some snowy pics tooFiled under: NewsSound the alarm and wake up your neighbors, because this week's Bungie Weekly Update confirms that next Tuesday, March 18th Bungie will reveal almost all there is all to know about the Legendary Map Pack. Details including the unveiling a new mystery map that'll join the already announced Ghost Town, other random informative bits as well as a specific release date for the new DLC. And to get us pumped for Tuesday's big reveal, Bungie posted four new images (all viewable in the gallery below) of a few vehicles we'll be seeing in the soon to be announced map and, wouldn't you know, they all have a wintry white paint job. Winterized vehicles including traditional rides like the Warthog and Mongoose as well as a snowy Scorpion and a re-balanced Hornet minus those damn, overpowered tracking missiles. So, using this knowledge and our expert analytical skills, we can pretty much confirm that one of the two yet ...
