Rumor: Obsidian unveils 'Alpha Protocol,' a spy-focused action RPG - SendMeRSS

Rumor: Obsidian unveils 'Alpha Protocol,' a spy-focused action RPGFiled under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, RPGs The latest issue of Game Informer reportedly has details on Obsidian Entertainment's next title: an action RPG called Alpha Protocol (via Obsidian forums and NeoGAF). The game will feature third person gameplay described as being similar to Mass Effect, and a storyline that comprises Bond-like romances and Bauer-like espionage. We haven't managed to snag a copy yet of the latest Game Informer to confirm it.Players take on the role of Michael Thorton, an inexperienced secret agent who has to deal with the ramifications of a mission gone haywire. An open-ended approach to objective-based gameplay seems to be at the core, with skill trees allowing players to build up particular play-styles. It all sounds nice on paper, but we'll have to see if Obsidian is up to the task of melding Mass Effect with 24.Read | Permalink | Email this ...

Pachter: GTA IV could sell 9 million units by HalloweenFiled under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Business Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes Grand Theft Auto IV could become the best-selling game of 2008, with $450 million in revenue and over 9 million units sold by the end of Take-Two's fiscal year (Oct. 31). He believes that GTA IV will ship 6 million units in its first week and sell 75% of that in a brief amount of time -- that means the game should not be difficult to find at any big box retailer. GTA IV is expected to mask the "underperformance" of other Take-Two games and make up "100% of Take-Two's earnings for the year."It's not all sunshine and lollipops, though, as Pachter questions the profitability of GTA IV's Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable content. The conclusion of some fancy math is that 50% of Xbox 360 GTA IV owners will have to purchase the DLC for Take-Two to generate cash from the deal, which Pachter believes is "not highly likely." Analyst: Iron Man film could suffer from GTA IV releaseFiled under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Business Jon Favreau's Iron Man adaptation is looking really good, but its ticket sales may suffer from a proverbial digital drive-by. That's according to Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey (via Next-Gen), who warns that the April 29 release of Grand Theft Auto IV could adversely affect the superhero film's May 2 opening the same week. Said Hickey, ""We anticipate the video game release of GTA IV on April 29 could dampen the potential from Iron Man's theatrical release on May 2."While you might scoff at the notion, remember that Halo 3 was cited as a primary reason for poor box office sales the week after its release last year.Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Ross Miller - Wed, 12 Mar 2008 08:00:00 GMT - Feed (12 subs) film grand-theft-auto-iv gta4 gtaiv iron-man movie Sent using ...
Motorstorm sequel gears up for Fall release - SendMeRSS

Motorstorm sequel gears up for Fall releaseFiled under: Sony PlayStation 3, Driving Those eager to strap themselves into inelegant hunks of metal and hurtle across slippery jungle tracks take note: You are insane. Also, you might be interested in the upcoming Motorstorm 2 (working title, apparently), which takes the best-selling PS3 launch game's off-road racing into the "unpredictability of a remote Pacific Island." There you'll encounter 16 new multi-route tracks and impossibly huge monster trucks. Thankfully, you won't be experiencing the "thick swamps, dense jungle, towering peaks and steaming volcanoes" on your own, as the online racing mode will cater for up to 16 players. Motorstorm 2 also promises a revolutionary new feature: "Split-screen Multiplayer" for up to four players! We hope that means the sequel will actually feel complete, as opposed to feeling dependent on patches and DLC over the course of several months.Motorstorm is expected to return on PlayStation 3 this F ...
EA explains Army of Two's regional lockout - SendMeRSS

EA explains Army of Two's regional lockoutFiled under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Interviews Though reviews haven't been consistently kind, most critics seem to label Army of Two's cooperative, fist-pounding gameplay as the best reason to start shooting. The promise of leaving a bloody terrorist trail with a buddy-in-arms does come with one caveat though: The members of your army can't have an ocean between them. Army of Two's online modes are restricted according to region, with the US, European and Asian versions unable to exchange so much as a salutation, let alone a barrage of bullets.Consequently, we spoke to EA Montreal's Reid Schneider, senior producer on Army of Two, in the hopes of learning more about the decision to introduce a territorial lockout across Xbox Live and PSN. While the explanation is unlikely to dissolve your disappointment (not to mention that of Claus, your Swedish best friend), it does spring from EA's belief to do what was best for ...

Game Republic developing a game based on a 'popular Hollywood film'Filed under: NewsGame Republic, best known for Folklore and their PSN outings Toy Home and Dark Mist, have been signed on to produce a title for Brash Entertainment. The game, based on a "popular Hollywood film," will be released in 2010 for unspecified platforms. Looking at Brash's history, this doesn't really bode well - their software library consists of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Jumper: Griffin's Story. Both of which bombed. Hard. We're in two minds, then, about what we can expect to see coming in 2010. Game Republic is a great developer who, ignoring Genji II, has a great PS3 legacy. On the other hand, what was the last good movie-based game you played? We cautiously look forward to hearing more. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Link - Comments - Jem Alexander - Wed, 12 Mar 2008 20:30:00 GMT - Feed (1 subs) 2010 b ...
PS3 Fanboy review: Rocketmen: Axis of Evil - SendMeRSS

PS3 Fanboy review: Rocketmen: Axis of EvilFiled under: Reviews, e-Distribution Games At one point in Rocketmen: Axis of Evil, the main character sighs, shaking his head, wondering "why do I have to do this?" At that one moment, I drop my controller -- it was then that I felt like the game had starting talking to me. Yes, you're right, game! Why do I have to play you? Why must I struggle through level after level of insipid, uninspired game design? How long will it take for me to finish you, so I can write a review and inform our PS3 Fanboy readers to avoid this at all costs?Paying $10 for a game like Rocketmen is an insult. You're essentially paying for a student project -- however, college professors get paid thousands of dollars to play and critique such amateur work. This is no joke: but at one point, I actually fell asleep while playing the game. There are a number of things Rocketmen does wrong -- impressive, considering how simple the genre of the dual-analog shooter is.Galle ...

Wii Warm Up: 'You missed me, pig!'Filed under: Wii Warm Up With Target: Terror announced for the Wii, we realize now there's really no limit to what terrible shooting games publishers are willing to port, no matter how dated its visuals. As much as we miss the Friday nights from our high school years spent hanging out at bowling alleys and movie theaters ogling girls who had no interest in us whatsoever, we don't miss the crappy games that usually populated those nostalgic spots. Still, we suspect that we'll see a lot more of these late 90s light gun games on our fair console. What shooter are you dreading hoping to play with your Zapper? Area 51? Virtua Cop? China Warrior is a bad game - SendMeRSS

China Warrior is a bad gameFiled under: Virtual ConsoleIt's hard to make any mention of the Turbografx-16 side-scrolling brawler China Warrior without its generally-accepted terribleness coming up. Yes, it's not a very good game. It's Kung Fu with big sprites and flying branches. We're sure nobody has downloaded it who wasn't reviewing it. But we forget in our laughter over its current availability that it used to be a retail game. People paid a lot of money for this game. People writing things on Wii Fanboy paid a lot of money for this game.Vintage Computing's Benj Edwards didn't pay a lot of money for China Warrior, but his price was even higher: hype for the game drove him to trade in his beloved copy of Super Mario Bros. 3. The horror! Edwards' story paints China Warrior as a destructive influence on a happy childhood, one that he is incapable of divesting himself of. If you've bought China Warrior, you'll probably be familiar with his pain.I still like China Warrior.[Via Game ...
Droolworthy Spore iPhone Demo Footage - SendMeRSS

Droolworthy Spore iPhone Demo Footage Handheld gaming has never really worked on non-gaming portables, but this footage showcasing Spore running on an iPhone is enough to give even the most staunch pessimist a bit of faith in the project. While EA has yet to finalize a release date for the game, they claim to still be committed to a release that would coincide with Spore's launch on the PC. A number of people are very impressed by how well this port uses the iPhone's exclusive features (accelerometer, touch screen, ability to heal the blind and lame, etc.) but most impressive to me is how amazing this thing looks during gameplay. Being tilt-sensitive is cool, but creating games that look as good as console titles is what will really sell this whole games-on-iPhone experiment to the average person. PS2 Too Weak to Handle Disgaea 3 - SendMeRSS
2008-03-12 15:08:13
PS2 Too Weak to Handle Disgaea 3 Disgaea 3 for the PS3 might not look much different from its PS2 predecessors, but NIS America's Jack Niida swears it's a next-gen game, just the same. The PS2 simply isn't powerful enough to run Disgaea 3, Niida told Joystiq, as it lacks the  requisite processing power and memory capacity. "S2 could not load the same amount of data on to memory and process it like the PS3; therefore, we decided to develop it for the next-gen platform," said Niida. You may be wondering why NIS didn't upgrade the game's look while we were at it, but as it turns out, they did. "The character sprites for Disgaea 3 take 3 to 4 times the amount of labor to create compared to Disgaea 2," said Niida. I, for one, am glad the game is visually in keeping with its previous installments in the series. Disgaea just wouldn't be the same without its charming spritely retro look. Mature Titles Dwindle As Revenue Grows - SendMeRSS
2008-03-12 15:08:12
Mature Titles Dwindle As Revenue Grows Despite a 14 percent drop in the number of Mature-rated titles released during 2007 as compared to the prior year, these games saw a 64 percent jump in revenue, according to some number crunching by Next Gen's Matt Matthews. As an explanation for these surprising figures, Matthews reasons that publishers focused on more family-friendly titles, as on average they generate more profit than Mature titles (in much the same way that R-rated films don't do as well as PG-13 films). The jump in revenue however, seems to be an anomaly caused by the nearly simultaneous release of three of the biggest Mature games of all time: Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed and Halo 3. Combined, these three games moved 11.7 million units, and easily generated more cash than 2006's Gears of War, that year's only ultra-successful Mature title. According to Matthews' numbers the decline of Mature-rated games should continue in the near future, but 2008 will p ...

Texas DA On Trial For 'Gimmicky' Computer Purchase Rockwall County, Texas District Attorney Ray Sumrow is being tried on charges of "forgery, theft and records tampering" after he used state funds to buy a high-end gaming computer, reports the Dallas Morning News. The computer, Sumrow claimed, was used as a backup server, but the presence of large amounts of personal data as well as gamer specific customizations including "two hard drives, seven fans, high-end video and audio cards, a wireless Internet connection and cables that glow under ultraviolet light" disagree with his claims.Testimony in the case is expected to continue for a few more days, but it's interesting to note how much of this case hinges on whether or not the computer is actually a gaming platform. Obviously it would physically appear to be a gamer's rig, but -- and I'm playing devil's advocate here -- maybe Mr. Sumrow just has the aesthetic tastes of a color-blind 14-year-old. It could happen! Review: Army Of Two No Good For Just One - SendMeRSS
2008-03-12 15:08:04
Review: Army Of Two No Good For Just One It's no accident that the font on the cover of Army of Two explicitly capitalizes and emboldens the title's final word: This game is simply not meant to be played by one person. The game does include a single-player mode, but it's evident from the beginning that the developers only included it so they could cross it off their mandated checklist of requirements. That's great news for all those gamers out there who get lonely while murdering virtual combatants, but it's also terrible news for those of us trying to critique it. How can you accurately judge a game that basically demands the most expensive peripheral of all: Another person?Army of Two tells the story of two former Army Rangers who, disillusioned with the U.S. military, sign up for some freelance combat with a private military contractor named SSC. The heroes are noble (if sarcastic), likable (if homicidal) and they share the sort of male camaraderie I haven't see ...

Trojan Attack Targets WoW's Info Sites Reports are filtering in of a mysterious ad banner appearing on World of Warcraft info sites Wowhead, Thottbot and Allakhazam that has been sneaking viruses onto the machines of unwitting users. Particularly vicious is the virus' method of delivery: instead of waiting for users to click on the infected banner ad, this particular attack mechanism only needs users to mouse over the banner to install the malicious code. Thankfully, users running Firefox with the No Script extension are immune to the attack, lending further credence to the idea that surfing the 'net with Internet Explorer is like driving without a seat belt on ... through a hurricane.Of special note is the fact that all of the infected sites are owned by Affinity Media, a group who has long had known ties to shady gold-selling entity IGE. Fake Dreamcast Site Scams Users - SendMeRSS

Fake Dreamcast Site Scams Users What was thought to be a Sega-managed Dreamcast site has turned out to be a fraud designed to trick visitors out of personal information. Visitors to Dreamcast.com were prompted to answer the question "Do you still own a Dreamcast?" by entering personal information such as their console's serial number. Their reward, after accepting a user end agreement, was supposed to be their very own dreamcast.com email address. The whole thing was a scam. Sega no longer owns the Dreamcast.com, and whoever does is trading off gamers' good will and affection for the console to steal visitors' personal information. It's still unclear what the nefarious no-gooder is doing with the information obtained by the trickery, but they're probably not sending out free copies of Chu Chu Rocket.Oops, Sega didn't really request your Dreamcast information [Talking About Games!] Link - Tue, 11 Mar 2008 12:01:18 GMT - Feed (1 subs) Sent using ...

Square Enix Shoots For More Global Launches In the future, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest fans might not have to wait so long to play their favorite RPGs. Acknowledging that the company's current strategy of waiting several months to a year before releasing games outside of Japan is inefficient in terms of marketing and promotion, president Yoichi Wada told the Nikkei Shimbun: "We want simultaneous global launches to be the standard." This is encouraging news, although in typical Square Enix fashion, it took every one of their competitors adopting this strategy before they thought that maybe they'd get around to it, too. I've been saying this for a long time: Square Enix's stubborn refusal to go global with its product development process was only hurting them. For example, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker came out at the end of 2006 in Japan, and it's releasing in Europe later this week. Meanwhile, while a major market gets a year-and-a-half old game, other parts of the wo ...

One and One: 2K Boston's Ken Levine In One and One, Game|Life asks a member of the gaming industry two questions: one about gaming, and one about something completely random. Although he has worked on games as diverse as Wall Street Tycoon and SWAT 4, Ken Levine is perhaps best known for his efforts as the lead designer of  the classic PC game System Shock 2. His most recent project was as project director for the award-winning BioShock. Deadlines are a necessary evil of all game development, but there have been many instances where a designer has chalked under-par gameplay elements up to "not having time." Do you think that deadlines can inhibit the creative process? When are deadlines a good thing? Is there another solution? Levine: As long as games cost money to make, deadlines will always be with us. On average, game developers are insanely hard-working. There are too many hard working folks in this industry. Infogrames to buy Atari publicly held stock? The already parent company of Atari made an offer to buy all publicly held stock for the price of $1.68 per stock.   This move would ensure that financial-troubled Atari wouldn't get delisted from NASDAQ, as it has been threatened on many occasions and, it would allow Infogrames to make decisions and implement them in the company much more easily.   Although this seems as a break for the Alone in the Dark publisher, it's not yet a done deal, “The offer is non-binding and there is no assurance that any transaction will occur,” Atari said.   It would be nice to know Atari wouldn't have to accept being acquired or declare bankruptcy, they've been in the industry for far too long. The stages are broken into three areas each, and there are forest, city, military, and other types of stages. We still don't know how the three types of Invader differ, but we can at least see that they can be directed at separate targets, even outside of their traditional formation.
