Copyright Explained… Now you know
2007-07-10 15:52:55
Copyright is often misunderstood, but Copyright on the Web is generally considered as a dark hallway. Smashing Magazine has a great article, Copyright Explained: I May Copy It, Right?, that does a thorough job of explaining copyright both online and offline. ...

How To Get Brilliant Keyword Research
2007-06-19 16:18:48
Brendon Sinclair posted a nice little post about how to get brilliant keyword research. He mentions that a very easy way to get effective keyword research is to use Google AdWords and do a test run on keywords that you have in mind. A run as short as 24-48 hours will give you a very good idea on the number of searches done on your keywords. Not only that, but AdWords stats will show you how often your ad was shown and also how many people clicked on it. Although the AdWords test run idea is not entirely new to the world of SEO, it’s a good nugget of info for those that are just learning or didn’t know. ...

Do you do .biz?
2007-06-12 02:46:35
Aaron Wall made a post today stating that he doesn’t like .biz domain names. I can’t say that I’m a fan of them either, but I’m not sure about his reasoning. The question posed was along the lines of switching from a .biz to a .com for better ranking. Aaron believes that a .biz [...] ...
Do you do .biz?

Aaron Wall made a post today stating that he doesn’t like .biz domain names. I can’t say that I’m a fan of them either, but I’m not sure about his reasoning. The question posed was along the lines of switching from a .biz to a .com for better ranking. Aaron believes that a .biz extension could hurt your exposure because the .biz is geared toward business in general and therefore could cost you some links. Now I’m in the same boat as Scott who points out the fact that .com is commercial. That was the whole basis for .org domains. So the “commercial = spam” can be applied in theory but not logic. In all honesty though, who’s going to register a .biz domain if the .com is available? Not sure you’d have many takers there. I think the question is more, “Should I try for a variation of a .com domain instead of choosing my desired domain in a .biz format?” In that case the answer is a big YES! I think a .biz vs. .com domai ...

Top Ten Signs You May Be Charging Too MUCH

Earlier in the week, I posted about a funny list from Freelance Switch on the top ten signs you may be charging too little. Well, Jack from the Lighter Side section is back at it again with another funny list of the Top Ten Signs You May Be Charging Too MUCH. Again, there’s always some truth in comedy. Here are a couple of my favorites… Number 10: To justify the price on your quotes, you’ve started writing extra words that usually mean the same thing… (eg. Creation of Concept, Concept Development, Concept Refinement, Tweaking to Concept, Amendments to Concept ….) Number 2: When you hear how much your lawyer charges per hour you think ‘peh, small fry!’. …. And the number one sign you may be charging too much You have reportedly charged *cough* $700,000 for this logo… I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the logo thing before. Organizations spend thousands and thousands of dollars for a logo that is just plain bad. Man, if only I could ju ...

Some good things about the Safari for Windows is that Apple has promised a speedy, speedy version. Apple says that Safari performed an iBench HTML performance suite test twice as fast as IE 7, and also pretty comparable results from the Javascript test. Visit Apple and download Safari for Windows. ...

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS3 Exploit Warning
2007-04-27 18:07:56
Thanks to ZDNet for this post on exploit code that’s been made publically available for a serious security flaw in Photoshop. This flaw could allow attackers to take complete control of your Windows machine, according to an advisory from FrSIRT. The flaw, rated critical, is caused by buffer overflow errors when handling a malformed “BMP”, “DIB” or “RLE” file. “This could be exploited by attackers to take complete control of an affected system by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted file using a vulnerable application,” FrSIRT said. … The exploit code, available at Milw0rm.com, has been successfully tested against Windows XP Service Pack 2. As of now, there are no patches available for these vulnerabilities. Of course always apply the common sense approach, “Don’t open files from sources you don’t trust”. ...

Finding the time to write
2007-04-10 05:44:39
As you notice, I haven’t been posting a ton over the past few weeks. It’s not because I don’t have anything to write about, or that I don’t want to. In fact, I’d love to! Of course, we all know that business comes first. I write on here as a way to share things I come across that I think would be helpful to other designers and developer. This blog is an outlet for me and something I do as a hobby. I’ve been working as a full-time designer/developer (yes I do both!) since 2002 and things are going great! That’s the reason for the lack of posting going on lately. (Remember the “business comes first” part earlier?) I’m working on 12 different projects now and it seems like a new one comes in every day or so. Which is great! Unfortunately, it doesn’t leave me with any time to post around here. Hopefully I’ll be able to plan my schedule out a little better so I can get back to posting at least a few times a we ...
